Wolves ace Mir scores Olympics hat-trick

Many Wolves fans have been left lauding the performance of Rafa Mir as Spain beat Ivory Coast 5-2 at the Olympic games in Tokyo.

As per Sky Sports, the striker was substituted on and scored a late equaliser to force extra-time against the Ivorians, and then went on to score two more to complete a very impressive hat-trick.

Mir has reportedly rejected a new deal at the Midlands club, and as such a number of teams around Europe are interested in his signature before the summer transfer window shuts.

However, his recent display has shown what he is capable of, and as such several members of the Molineux faithful applauded the 24-year-old and have called for him to stay.

Tri-series plans still in the air

Negotiations are still underway for a tri-series tournament in South Africa, involving Pakistan and potentially Sri Lanka, as Pakistan continues to find ways to fill a depleted international calendar

Negotiations are still underway for a tri-series tournament in South Africa, involving Pakistan and potentially Sri Lanka, as Pakistan continues to find ways to fill a depleted international calendar.Though talk of the series has been rife since the Champions Trophy – originally scheduled to be held in Pakistan from September 12 – was finally postponed at the end of last month, progress in bringing it about has been slow. The PCB’s international cricket committee met today to review the situation arising from the postponement and discussed several options for Pakistan. Time, though, is against Pakistan as realistically, most teams have international commitments from October 1 and any commitment has to be arranged before then. The committee discussed the South Africa tri-series proposal as well as alternatives within and outside Pakistan.”They [Cricket South Africa] are still looking at various commercial options and opportunities for the series,” Shafqat Naghmi, chief operating officer, told Cricinfo. “The situation will be clearer once the commercial viability of the proposal is assessed.”It is believed that the PCB, eager for the series to go ahead, has offered to help CSA in trying to attract a broadcaster as well as sponsors. As of now, however, no dates are confirmed and neither is the availability of Sri Lanka just yet.The Champions Trophy postponement left Pakistan with their second big gap in the year, after Australia refused to tour in March-April, also due to security concerns. Board officials are privately concerned at the lack of matches in Pakistan, not just because of the effect it has on the development of the side, but also the financial pressures.Though neither the Australia tour nor the Champions Trophy have been written off as losses, some estimates suggest the PCB was looking to earn US$7 million from each series. “It isn’t just that this team needs to play to learn more and develop. Financially it is very important that we just play,” one official present at the meeting today told Cricinfo.Pakistan will not play a single Test this year and have played most of their ODIs against weaker teams such as Bangladesh and Zimbabwe. Members of the current administration have long been unhappy with their predecessors, who, under Shaharyar Khan’s tenure, negotiated such a lopsided Future Tours Programme (FTP) last time round. “We were left with very few commitments for this year and that is something we must address when the next FTP cycle is finalised,” the official said.Naghmi will now meet the governing board during the second week of September for approval of any potential assignments.

Wainwright century leaves Sussex in the mire

Andrew Miller reports on the second day of the Championship relegation clash between Sussex and Yorkshire at Hove

Andrew Miller at Hove25-Sep-2008Sussex 25 for 3 (Nash 15*, Goodwin 1*) trail Yorkshire 400 for 9 dec (Rashid 111, Wainwright 104*) by 375 runs
ScorecardYorkshire’s bowlers hauled their side back from the brink in spectacular style on the second day at Hove, first with the bat, and then – more conventionally – with the ball, as Adil Rashid made his second first-class century and David Wainwright, batting at No. 10 and playing in only his fourth match of the season, cruised to a chanceless and brilliant unbeaten 104. Their efforts, together with an invaluable 39 from Tim Bresnan and a typically obdurate 28 not out from 67 balls from Matthew Hoggard, allowed Yorkshire to convert a first-day scoreline of 80 for 6 into a full hand of batting points and a formidable 400 for 9 declared. By the close it was Sussex, 25 for 3 after Hoggard (twice) and Rashid had picked up a trio of lbws in nine overs, who feared the trapdoor opening beneath their feet. The net result was a dramatic transformation of the permutations in a thrilling climax to the county season. With Kent floundering against Durham at Canterbury, and Lancashire locked in a mighty tussle down at Taunton, the identity of the second team to be relegated from the top flight is unlikely to be decided until the very last ball has been bowled. For the moment, however, Yorkshire have their destiny in their own hands, thanks to a furiously wagging tail that racked up 320 runs for the loss of three wickets.Such a turnaround didn’t look remotely likely when play resumed on the second morning with Rashid and Bresnan the not-out batsmen. But, after the debilitating loss of three wickets in the closing overs of the first day’s play, the pair found the going far easier with the sun on their backs, and though Sussex’s two main bowlers, Mohammad Sami and Jason Lewry, opened up with a pair of seven-over spells, they were unable to force the breakthrough. The tone had been set for the day.Yorkshire’s immediate aim when play began was to post a total, any total, and it was Bresnan to whom they initially turned for salvation. He offered a chance on 26 when he edged low to Chris Adams at slip, but batted with such solidity that it was a surprise when the spinner Ollie Rayner nailed him with his fourth ball of the match. Bresnan sized up a slog-sweep but found a thin inside-edge onto the pad, and Adams made amends with a low diving catch. Bresnan was not best pleased with the decision – perhaps he thought he’d been given out lbw – but his 67-ball effort had helped to double Yorkshire’s total from their nadir of 80 for 6.That minor recovery alone wasn’t going to be enough to save their season, but Rashid pushed on nervelessly, bringing up his half-century from 89 balls with a dab down to third man. He lost another partner when Rich Pyrah drove loosely outside off at Robin Martin-Jenkins for Carl Hopkinson to gather a squirted edge at gully, and by lunch Yorkshire were 184 for 8, 16 runs adrift of their first bonus point. In placid conditions, however, with Wainwright looking comfortable and the dogged Hoggard to follow, Rashid had partners in whom he could trust, and in the afternoon session, Yorkshire’s fightback really began.Between lunch and tea, Yorkshire added 115 runs with scarcely a chance being offered to a wilting attack. Wainwright has some pedigree as a batsman, with a solitary first-class half-century against Bangladesh A to show for his efforts, but he matched Rashid’s diligence and had reached 54 not out by the break, with four calmly selected fours in 113 balls. Rashid, however, was the main man, and he brought up his hundred from 174 balls when he uppercut Martin-Jenkins through backward point for his seventh four.Rashid’s coolly understated celebrations demonstrated his focus. By then Yorkshire had moved past 300 for their third batting point, but were determined to keep up the accumulation. Sami, however, eventually ended the pair’s 140-run stand when umpire Richard Illingworth adjudged Rashid lbw for a career-best 111. If Sussex believed that would be the end of their woes, however, they were sorely mistaken, as Hoggard and Wainwright embarked on a 82-run unbeaten stand that wrung the last ounce of resolve out of their opponents. Towards the end of the innings, they had to make do without Matt Prior behind the stumps, who left the field as a precaution after bruising his right hand. He is expected to bat without any concerns on Friday.Wainwright’s approach was clinical. He offered a broad and straight bat to anything in line with the stumps, and cultured aggression to all other deliveries. With Hoggard hustling between the wickets and providing the wisdom of an old pro, he marched into uncharted territory before bringing his milestone up with an impressive double-whammy – a swing for six over fine leg off Martin-Jenkins, and then a wallop for four through the covers from his very next delivery, a juicy full-toss outside off from Michael Yardy that prompted a yell of triumph and a delighted punch of the air.Soon afterwards, with the fifth batting point in the bag, McGrath put an end to Sussex’s toil and sent them out to face nine taxing overs before the close. The sun was still shining and the pitch was still flat, but not as flat as Sussex’s morale. Hoggard, whose international reputation was fostered on pitches such as these, was too good for Yardy, whom he beat at will outside off before his late swing beat an attempted flick to leg. Two balls later, Rashid capped his day by sending Ollie Rayner on his way for a golden duck, and then it was back to Hoggard to provide the coup de grace, as Hopkinson also swished across the line.Three prime wickets in the bag in the closing moments of the day… it had a familiar ring about it. It remains to be seen, however, whether Sussex can respond to the indignity with the same resolve that Yorkshire produced. It could make or break their season.

Fulham closing in on Rodrigo Muniz deal

Fulham are closing in on a deal which would bring Rodrigo Muniz to Craven Cottage this summer.

What’s the talk?

That’s according to a report by Brazilian media outlet O Dia, who claimed that Cottagers CEO Alistair Mackintosh contacted Flamengo executive director Bruno Spindel on Thursday to confirm the proposal of an €8m (£6.8m) offer for the centre-forward, a deal which is split into two €4m (£3.4m) instalments.

The report added that Middlesbrough also made an offer for the 20-year-old, believed to be a €5m (£4.3m) bid for 50% of his rights, although Muniz prefers the idea of a move to Fulham.

Following the report, Vene Casagrande provided a further update on the situation of the striker, with the journalist revealing on Twitter that the Flamengo forward is set to travel to London in the coming days in order to link up with Fulham.

Silva will be buzzing

With it being reported that Marco Silva personally informed Muniz that he wanted to complete his signing to replicate the acquisition of Richarlison while at Everton, reports that a deal for the centre-forward seems to be all but done is sure to have left the 44-year-old buzzing.

Indeed, the youngster would appear to be a player with a significant amount of potential, and one who could well light up the Championship next season.

Over his nine Serie A appearances for Flamengo so far this term, the £2.7m-rated man has bagged three goals, provided one assist and created two big chances for his teammates, averaging 0.6 key passes and 2.4 shots per match.

These metrics have seen the man who Rene Simoes dubbed a “very good” player earn an average SofaScore match rating of 7.16, ranking him as the club’s joint eighth-best player in the Brazilian top flight.

As such, following on from the already impressive signings of Harry Wilson and Paulo Gazzaniga this summer, the possible addition of Muniz is clear evidence of the direction in which Silva wishes to take Fulham, with the club’s transfer dealings so far under the Portuguese boss very much sending a message to the rest of the Championship that the Cottagers mean business this season.

Bowlers hand advantage to India A

India A seized the advantage in the first Test against New Zealand A after some splendid work by the Indian bowlers

Cricinfo staff29-Sep-2008
ScorecardIndia A seized the advantage in the first Test against New Zealand A after some splendid work by the Indian bowlers. Having bowled out New Zealand for 230, ensuring an 18-run lead, India were 27 for 1 at stumps, having lost the wicket of Shikhar Dhawan.Earlier in the day, the New Zealand openers added hust 29 runs to the overnight score of 36. BJ Watling was the first to go, and Aaron Redmond followed after scoring 51, which consisted of eight fours and a six.A solid 90-run partnership between Peter Fulton and James Marshall for the third wicket looked like putting New Zealand back on track at 179 for 3 before the trio of Ashok Dinda, Mohnish Parmar and Amit Mishra triggered a collapse. And after Sudeep Tyagi removed Brent Arnel and Reece Young in two overs, it was upto Parmar to wrap up the innings by removing last man Trent Boult. Parmar, the offspinner, was the pick of the bowlers with 3 for 57 as Dinda, Mishra and Tyagi bagged two wickets apiece.India’s openers began cautiously but Boult struck in the sixth over, removing Dhawan who was caught by Redmond.

Gerrard must unleash Kamara v Dundee Utd

Rangers made a solid start to their Scottish Premiership title defence last weekend, seeing off Livingston 3-0 at Ibrox, but they could be in for a tough test on Saturday afternoon.

On the chalkboard

The Gers stormed to their first top-flight title in 10 years last season, finishing a whopping 25 points ahead of the pack.

Although Glasgow arch-rivals Celtic lost their opening league fixture, the additions of Joe Hart, Kyogo Furuhashi and James McCarthy have significantly strengthened their ranks.

Therefore, Rangers boss Gerrard must field his strongest XI over the weekend, reinstating key midfielder Glen Kamara into the Glasgow giants’ engine room.

The Finland international missed their midweek trip to Malmo in the third round of Champions League qualification through suspension, and the consequences of his absence were clear for all to see as the Gers fell to a 2-1 defeat which would’ve been worse only for Steven Davis’ last-gasp goal.

What Glen Kamara adds

Kamara was one of Gerrard’s standout performers as Rangers blew their domestic opposition away in 2020/21, recording an average passing accuracy of 90.7%, outperforming all of his current teammates in that metric.

In addition to that, he averaged 1.1 tackles, 0.9 interceptions and 0.8 key passes per league outing; whilst at Euro 2020, this increased to 1.3 tackles and 3.3 interceptions even though he faced semi-finalists Denmark and one of the favourites in Belgium in the group stage, as per WhoScored.

Neil McCann, his former manager at Dundee, lauded the 25-year-old after setting in well to life at Ibrox, complimenting his ability to take on instructions from his coaches.

“He isn’t a big, physical lad, but he’s made of iron and really strong. I knew immediately that he could handle the ball under pressure and not give it away, so he was perfect,” said the 46-year-old.

McCann added: “He’s a special talent… He’s lightning-quick, but he doesn’t show it. He’s a player who takes instruction well.”

The added security and drive which Kamara brings to Rangers’ midfield, alongside his careful use of the ball, could be decisive in cutting off the supply lines to the potent Lawrence Shankland if Gerrard’s charges are to pick up another three points at Tannadice. The Finn’s name should be one of the first on the team sheet over the weekend.

Spurs set sights on Palhinha

According to a report by O Jogo, via Sport Witness, Tottenham Hotspur and Fabio Paratici have made ‘exploratory contacts’ to sign Portugal international Joao Palhinha following manager Nuno Espirito Santo’s personal approval.

The Lowdown: Spurs in centre-midfield hunt?

As per Paul Brown of The Daily Star, Tottenham’s club record signing Tanguy Ndombele is now somewhat unsettled again in north London with his future ‘back in doubt’.

Indeed, as a result, Spurs are apparently on the lookout for new central midfield additions and Palhinha is said to be one of the targets.

The likes of Denis Zakaria and Corentin Tolisso have also been mentioned but O Jogo have an update on the Sporting CP star in particular.

The Latest: Nuno green lights Palhinha move…

As per a report in the paper edition of O Jogo, via Sport Witness, Tottenham head coach Nuno has approved of a swoop for the 26-year-old.

[web_stories_embed url=”https://www.footballtransfertavern.com/web-stories/tottenham-latest-gossip/” title=”Tottenham latest gossip!” poster=”” width=”360″ height=”600″ align=”none”]

They also say that Spurs and Paratici have made ‘exploratory contacts’ to sign Palhinha as a result and there is even a belief that Sporting could accept nearly half of their original €60 million (£50.8m) asking price.

The Primeira Liga giants have apparently been negotiating at around €30m (£25.4m) given their need to offload this summer, coming as a possible boost for Spurs.

However, they are definitely not alone in the race for Palhinha, with Manchester City, Manchester United, Barcelona and Atletico Madrid also on the prowl.

The Verdict: Get it done…

The 6 foot 3 powerhouse, lauded as a ‘special player’ by Sporting boss Ruben Amorim (via Record), would be quite a coup for Spurs given his exploits in the Portuguese top flight last term.

According to WhoScored, the midfield gem averaged a sensational 3.3 tackles per 90 in the centre of the park over 28 starts – eclipsing the numbers of every Tottenham player in the Premier League.

He would undoubtedly be a colossal partner for either Pierre-Emile Hojbjerg or Oliver Skipp in front of the back four and a more than ideal replacement for Moussa Sissoko.

Scorecard
Himachal Pradesh continued to roll, winning their third straight to stay at the top of Group A. Simply put, Himachal overwhelmed Jammu & Kashmir in Dharamsala. Hundreds from their top three formed a second-innings total of 449 for 1, following which the bowlers dismissed J&K for just 144, giving the home side a whopping 480-run win on day three. From an overnight 191 for 0, openers Sangram Singh and Bhavin Thakkar extended their stand to 254. Thakkkar, who made 122 in the first innings, was first out for 104 but there was no respite for J&K. Sangram batted on to an unbeaten 215 from 277 balls, hitting 28 fours and five sixes, and added 195 with Vinit Indulkar. Indulkar helped himself to an unbeaten 109, his third first-class century, off 88 balls.Set 625 to win, Services were never even in the game. Having made 120 in their first innings, they again faltered from the start. By the time the score was 80, six batsmen were back inside. Sarandeep Singh, the former India offspinner, made it eight for the match with a second-innings haul of 4 for 49. Himachal have won three straight and, with 16 points, stand ten ahead of Goa.
Scorecard
Bengal beat Services by an innings and 226 runs inside three days at Eden Gardens, thereby netting six vital points, including a bonus. Having declared at 442 for 6, Bengal’s win came swiftly as Ashok Dinda (4 for 28) and Ranadeb Bose (3 for 34) skittled Services for 109. Bose removed Sumit Tomar, Services’ captain, for 1 in the first over of the day, Jasvir Singh in the third, and Yashpal Singh in the fifth, both for ducks.Dinda was soon into his stride, removing Tahir Khan (15) and Soomik Chatarjee (6) to leave Services 31 for 5. There was little resistance and Services folded in the 53rd over. Bengal, who will face Tripura from November 29, now have seven points from two games.
Scorecard
Rahul Dewan rallied Haryana’s march towards victory over Kerala, hitting an unbeaten 254 in just his third first-class match. Haryana racked up a massive 581 for 4, with centuries from Dewan, Sunny Singh and Sumeet Sharma, and Kerala were up against it going into the final day in Palakkad. Dewan and Sunny continued their run of form in this match, adding 256 for the second wicket. Sunny made 124, his sixth century, and Sumeet Sharma weighed in with a breezy 114 from 132 balls, putting on 234. Dewan batted 557 minutes and 416 balls for his effort, which included 28 fours and a pair of sixes. Ten bowlers were used by Kerala, but only two – Tinu Yohannan and Preambhastn Prem – managed wickets. In reply, Kerala’s openers batted ten overs to reach 36 for no loss at stumps.
Scorecard
Goa moved in position to notch their second win of the season, reducing Jharkand to 53 for 4 in Margao by stumps on day three. Goa had extended their lead to 299 by making 256 in their second innings – Advait Katkar made a career-best 76 and Shadab Jakati an unbeaten 49 from 61 balls – before Saurabh Bandekar nipped out three Jharkhand wickets. For the visitors, right-arm medium-pacer Sujit Roy (4 for 75) returned the best figures in a disciplined bowling effort. However, Jharkhand will rue a poor first-innings 147 and a bad start to a 300-run chase. Plenty rests on the shoulders of 18-year-old Saurabh Tiwary, batting on 11 from 55 balls.
Scorecard
Tripura came back well on the third day in Agartala, keeping Vidarbha to 203 and knocking off 46 of the 278 needed to win. Vidharbha had taken a 101-run lead by stumps on day two, but Jayanta Debnath and Tushar Saha bowled well to limit the damage. Saha, a slow left-arm spinner, got stuck in early and finished with 4 for 65, taking his match tally to 10 for 116. Medium-pacer Debnath took 4 for 54 and ran through the lower order. There was only one half-century in the innings, a round 50 from Ranjit Paradkar – his second in the game – and Shalabh Shrivastava scored 49. Tripura’s openers, Sourav Dubey and Biswajit Dey, overcame first-innings ducks to provide their side a steady start.

Spurs preparing Damsgaard offer

According to a report by Italian newspaper La Republicca (via Sport Witness), Tottenham Hotspur are ‘preparing an offer’ to sign Sampdoria sensation Mikkel Damsgaard – with managing director Fabio Paratici firmly on his case.

The Lowdown: Spurs in Damsgaard chase?

Numerous reports have backed Tottenham’s interest in the Denmark international over this last month.

La Repubblica (via TUTTOmercatoWEB) claimed last month that Spurs were in pole position to sign Damsgaard ahead of all other competitors and were ready to lodge a €25 million (£21.2m) offer.

Since then, claims in the English media have backed Tottenham’s interest as The Evening Standard report they have him on their radar.

The Latest: Spurs ‘preparing’ Damsgaard offer…

Bringing another update similar to last month’s, La Repubblica (via Sport Witness) believe Tottenham are now ‘preparing an offer’ to sign Damsgaard.

[web_stories_embed url=”https://www.footballtransfertavern.com/web-stories/tottenham-latest-gossip/” title=”Tottenham latest gossip!” poster=”” width=”360″ height=”600″ align=”none”]

It is also believed that Paratici is personally on his case and orchestrating a move for Denmark’s rising star.

While Tottenham face competition from Premier League rivals Leeds United, this report states that Nuno Espirito Santo and the Lilywhites are ‘out in front’.

The Verdict: Get it done…

If ever Spurs wanted a perfect replacement for ex-star Christian Eriksen, they should look no further than Damsgaard.

The attacking midfield player summed up his talent with a stunning Euro 2020 semi-final free kick against England at Wembley and has attracted huge praise from pundits.

His former youth coach, Kasper Kurland, has detailed the ‘gigantic buzz’ around Damsgaard back in Denmark (inews), while Serie A expert Conor Clancy likened the 21-year-old to Eriksen – calling him a ‘very exciting’ player (This is Futbol).

If Tottenham can get him over the line, we believe he would be a very shrewd purchase.
