England international serving suspensionClear to play again from JanuaryBlues in the market for another No.9WHAT HAPPENED?

The Blues remain in the market for a proven No.9 despite splashing out £1 billion ($1.2bn) on new recruits across the last three windows. There have been suggestions that a move for Toney could be made at some stage – once the England international has completed his eight-month ban for breaches of FA betting regulations.

AdvertisementGetty ImagesWHAT THEY SAID

Brentford would be reluctant sellers – with Manchester United and Tottenham also being linked with their talismanic frontman – but Bees boss Thomas Frank accepts that money talks. He has told : “So far we’ve only sold one in the Premier League, that was David Raya [to Arsenal] – or that’s a loan but probably will be a sale in the future, I guess. I think every club in the world are a selling club except five or six clubs. We are a selling club, if the right price is there. I think if it’s the right time for the player to go, from my perspective that’s not my decision that would be Phil [Giles, director of football] or Matthew [Benham, owner] in the end, then I think if they have developed well with us, been on the journey, and now they’re proven good enough to go to the top clubs, then I think it’s the right thing, if it’s the right price.”

THE BIGGER PICTURE

Frank added when asked if Toney – who hit 20 goals last season – would be among those available if a suitable offer was tabled: “Yeah, I think so. I understand why there are a lot of rumours out there about him. For me he’s one of the best strikers, as a striker No.9, I don’t see many out there who is better in the world than him, of course you have [Harry] Kane, [Robert] Lewandowski, [Erling] Haaland and these types, but not many. He scored 20 goals in the Premier League last year, in, of course, a very good Brentford side but of course we are not creating as many chances as the top six or seven teams. So imagine him in a top team, he’d easily score 20, 25 goals, for me. I think he’s composed, he’s a good finisher, top mentality, so I understand why clubs are looking at him.”

'He should've scored six' – Chelsea star Nicolas Jackson criticised by Mauricio Pochettino despite bagging hat trick in eventful Tottenham win as Blues boss provides Christopher Nkunku injury update

Chelsea boss Mauricio Pochettino has criticised Blues striker Nicolas Jackson, despite him scoring a hat trick against Tottenham on Monday.

Jackson bagged hat trick in Spurs winBut Pochettino not happy with strikerNkunku likely to take spot when fitGettyWHAT HAPPENED?

The London derby was the most chaotic Premier League game of the season so far, with Spurs ending the contest with nine men and VAR creating plenty of controversy. Chelsea eventually triumphed 4-1, with Jackson grabbing a second-half hat trick at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium.

AdvertisementWHAT THEY SAID

Despite scoring three times, Jackson was criticised for his poor finishing in the clash, and these sentiments were echoed by his manager on Friday. Pochettino said: "It's easy to say: okay, scored three goals. It's a process. He's still young, needs to improve. Okay scored three goals, but should have scored six. The most important is to keep calm and relaxed and he is going to improve with time. Nights like Monday help him not to be too much nervous and approach a game in a different way."

Getty ImagesTHE BIGGER PICTURE

Due to Christopher Nkunku and Armando Broja being ruled out with injury, Jackson has likely played more minutes than he was expecting during his early Chelsea career. The frontman now boasts five Premier League goals from 10 games, but with Nkunku set to return to full fitness after the international break, he could see his playing time limited.

Pochettino provided an update on the Frenchman's availability ahead of his side's Premier League clash with Man City. "We had some conversation and he said to me I want to be ready for after the international break, Newcastle. I asked him yesterday and he said 'hmmm', and I said you are liar. It is close and he is really well. We are happy with him."

Sarina Wiegman names Nations League squadMead returns after a year outNo place for Man City keeper RoebuckWHAT HAPPENED?

The Euro 2022 Golden Boot winner was forced to miss England's 2023 World Cup campaign due to the issue, but made her first start for Arsenal this season in a 3-0 WSL victory over Brighton at the weekend. Lionesses boss Sarina Wiegman has wasted no time drafting the 28-year-old back into her squad, but there is no place for Manchester City goalkeeper Ellie Roebuck.

Roebuck has paid the price after being displaced as Manchester City's first-choice goalkeeper by Khiara Keating this term. She was one of four goalkeepers called up to Wiegman's last squad in October, but only Mary Earps, Hannah Hampton and Keating have made the cut this time around.

WHAT SARINA WIEGMAN SAID

England must beat the Netherlands in their next Nations League fixture to keep their hopes of finishing top of League A, Group 1 alive. Wiegman's side will then travel to Hampden for a grudge match against Scotland, and the manager has issued a rallying cry ahead of the two fixtures. “We know we’ll need to win our last two games of 2023 and we’ll give everything we have for that outcome," she told a press conference. "This group have shown resilience and strength of character time and time again and I have absolutely no doubts we’ll be ready to go when the whistle blows for both fixtures. We always embrace the opportunity to play at Wembley, it’s been home to some of our biggest and happiest occasions. We’ll need the crowd to play their part and continue the incredible backing they’ve shown for the team. They’ve always been there when we need them and we’ll need them once again. An away fixture against Scotland is also an occasion we’ll all look forward to, but we’ll take it one game at a time.”

Wiegman added on Mead's return: “She’s shown enough to me and for my technical staff to bring her in. She is a character that brings positive energy off the pitch and on the pitch and it’s good to have her back. Her experience, the way she plays, she’s different than other players on the wing, she brings different things so that’s good we have different opportunities again. Off pitch gives us some extra energy.”

Red Dragons enjoyed comprehensive winFrontman netted on three occasionsFirst effort took a wicked deflectionWHAT HAPPENED?

The prolific Red Dragons frontman is back in the groove this season after recovering from the punctured lung that he suffered during a summer tour of the United States. He is up to nine efforts for the campaign, with another match ball claimed last time out in a 6-0 mauling of Morecambe. There were no doubts regarding his second and third of that contest, but his first strike did take a wicked deflection that left his manager mulling over whether Mullin would be awarded the goal.

Parkinson told after seeing Mullin fill his boots against Morecambe: “He was good, very good. I thought his all round play, his link play and his runs, were really good. Really good display getting a hat-trick. It can’t be bad can it! The first one I wasn’t sure if he had been awarded it or not because of the deflection, but goals are so important and key moments in games to take chances – the fourth goal really does kill the game off. I’m just as pleased with his all round performance.”

THE BIGGER PICTURE

Mullin now has 88 goals for Wrexham through 111 appearances, with his contribution helping the club to smash records last season as they returned to the Football League in style. He is showing no sign of slowing down, with Hollywood co-owners Ryan Reynolds and Rob McElhenney being given plenty to shout about.

Sin bin idea proposed for cynical foulsPostecoglou makes feelings clear on ideaDyche agrees with Spurs bossGettyWHAT HAPPENED?

Postecoglou, 58, has claimed the Premier League need to "bin" the idea of introducing a possible sin bin to the game, after claiming there is "not much wrong" with the game currently.

AdvertisementGettyWHAT POSTECOGLOU SAID

Speaking to reporters, the Spurs boss made his feelings clear on the possible rule change. "Bin it, just bin the whole idea mate," he said. "Just forget about it. I don't understand why, and I've already said things on this kind of stuff, I just don't know why they keep interjected themselves into the game. There's not that much wrong with the game. Bin it mate."

THE BIGGER PICTURE

Earlier this week the game's lawmaking body, International Football Association Board (IFAB), revealed they would "identify which levels were best to test" in terms of introducing a possible ten minute sin bin for cynical fouls. However, the idea has been met by strong opposition from Premier League bosses, with Everton's Sean Dyche agreeing with Postecoglou that the idea was not needed.

Regardless of the possible rule change, Postecoglou must now focus on getting his Spurs side back to winning ways, after they suffered their third defeat in a row to Aston Villa last weekend.

Spurs are currently sat in fifth place within the Premier League, after failing to record a win throughout the month of November. They will now face the tough task of an away trip to the Etihad Stadium to face Manchester City this weekend, as they look for a fresh start in December.

Kylian Mbappe, Phil Foden & Andriy Lunin lead UEFA Champions League FedEx Performance Zone

The PSG, Manchester City and Real Madrid stars all played massive roles in their sides picking up vital wins in the first legs of their last-16 ties

The UEFA Champions League knockout stage is underway, with the first four matches of the last-16 having completed their first-leg ties. Manchester City, Real Madrid and Paris Saint-Germain all took important leads from their opening European matches from 2024 and know what they have to do to keep their campaigns alive.

After a strong performance in Denmark, City will host Copenhagen in the second leg confident that they can hold onto the two-goal lead they secured thanks to a 3-1 win. Madrid, on the other hand, secured a narrow victory from their trip to face RB Leipzig but will be determined to make sure they keep that one-goal lead when they meet again in the Santiago Bernabéu.

From Wednesday's matches, Bayern suffered a second consecutive setback when they were beaten 1-0 by Lazio in Rome, while it was business as usual for Kylian Mbappe as he helped fire Paris Saint-Germain to victory against Real Sociedad.

It was an interesting week of matches in Europe's most prestigious competition, but who were the standout performers? With the help of the FedEx Performance Zone, GOAL takes a look at the stars of the UCL this week.

GettyPhil Foden | Manchester City | 75 points

The Manchester City star played a pivotal role in his team's away win against Copenhagen on Tuesday. He helped them off to a fine start with his part in a brilliant team move that ended with him finding Kevin De Bruyne for the Belgian to lash in the opening goal just 10 minutes in.

Then, after Copenhagen drew level and Bernardo Silva restored City's lead, it was the Englishman who ensured his team left Denmark with a two-goal cushion from the first leg right at the end of the match. He once again combined perfectly with De Bruyne, feeding the attacking midfielder deep in the box and got into a great position to receive the return pass and smashed in a stoppage time goal.

AdvertisementGetty Images Andriy Lunin | Real Madrid | 66 points

Real Madrid may have escaped their visit to Leipzig with a 1-0 win, but the Spanish side were far from dominant throughout the match. In fact, the two teams had a right good go at each other for the first 45 minutes, but things took a distinct turn in the second period.

Even though Madrid took an early lead after the restart, it was the German side who seemed much more direct and efficient in the second period. They forced goalkeeper Andriy Lunin into six saves in the second-half, adding to the three he pulled off in the opening 45, making a total of nine saves over the course of the game. If Madrid owed the win to anyone, it was the magnificent Ukraine international more than it was goalscorer Brahim Diaz.

GettyKylian Mbappe | Paris Saint-Germain | 65 points

It can hardly be a surprise to see that Kylian Mbappe was instrumental in Paris Saint-Germain starting their last-16 tie with a victory. The French forward has now scored in four of the Ligue 1 champions' seven Champions League game this season.

His goal had been coming for some time, too. He had a total of seven shots over the course of the match and four were on target. Breaking the deadlock just before the hour mark gave his team a big lift – they really took control of the match afterwards – and gave them the platform to go on and make it 2-0 and take a huge advantage in the tie overall.

GettyBenjamin Sesko | RB Leipzig | 51 points

RB Leipzig drew a blank on home soil against perennial European giants Real Madrid, but the German side put their opponents under immense pressure throughout the 90 minutes.

Benjamin Sesko was at the forefront of their attack against Carlo Ancelotti's team. They amassed a total of 14 efforts overall against their visitors and Sesko had as many as six of those, four of which were on target – more than any of his team-mates. He may have been on the losing side, but the Slovenian put in an amazing performance against the likes of Nacho Fernandez and Aurelien Tchouameni.

Klopp slammed celebration policeWants to make memories before leaving LiverpoolLiverpool face Chelsea in Carabao Cup final on SundayWHAT HAPPENED?

The Liverpool manager slammed the celebration police who criticised Mikel Arteta for his wild reactions after Arsenal's 3-1 win over the Reds earlier this month. He also mentioned that he wants to win multiple trophies this season before leaving the Merseyside club at the end of the current campaign.

AdvertisementWHAT JURGEN KLOPP SAID

Speaking to reporters ahead of the club's Carabao Cup final against Chelsea on Sunday, Klopp said, "I heard the discussions – that Mikel [Arteta] over-celebrated the [Arsenal] win against us. That definitely did not come from me. Everybody can do whatever. I didn’t invent fist-pumps and I don’t have the copyright on it and I don’t want it. You do what you do for yourself and your people. What the outside world thinks about it – I couldn’t give a s—, to be honest. And you can write that exactly like that. This is for us and nobody else. Who likes it, likes it, and who doesn’t like it, doesn’t like it. You can make what you want of my celebrations."

He added, "I want to win on Sunday but not for me or my trophy cabinet. It is for the boys, for the club, for the people. That is much more important and everything will go on. What we are doing at the moment is writing a wonderful book, I would say. We wrote and we are still writing a wonderful book and when I leave we close that book, put it on the shelf and then someone else will write a wonderful book. That is the idea. I will not leave anything inside. I will give absolutely everything until the last second.

"Yes, there is space for some chapters. It is long. I am not there and writing the resume already. Not at all. I am 100 per cent in trying to create a few special memories on top of what we have done. We will see what is possible, but the basis we created so far – come on, 60 points is an extraordinary amount of points with all the things that have gone on. And we all know it should be 61 or 63! We all know that! It is so special and let’s keep going. Whatever happens happens and as long as we can influence games we should give it a proper try. The red part of Wembley should be rocking. That would be really, really nice. This team deserves it. This team deserves each push. These boys will throw their heart and soul on the pitch. I know that."

Last month, the German manager announced that he would end his nine-year-long relationship with the Reds at the end of the ongoing season. Since then he has been linked with a move to Bayern Munich although his agent made it clear that he would take a one-year-long sabbatical from coaching.
