Pointless move: Liverpool prepare Alex McCarthy swoop as Mignolet exit is expected

[ad_pod ]

According to The Mirror, Liverpool are ready to raid Southampton yet again – this time for their goalkeeper Alex McCarthy as they attempt to prepare for life without Simon Mignolet.

What’s the word, then?

Well, the Reds are expecting Belgian international Mignolet to leave this summer after he dropped down in the pecking order behind Alisson Becker – he can’t really argue, however, as the Brazilian kept 21 clean sheets in his debut Premier League campaign.

Jurgen Klopp considered a move for McCarthy when it seemed as if Roma were going to make life difficult for Liverpool in their pursuit of Alisson last summer, and he may revisit the Saints stopper as a target if Mignolet does depart.

You can relive Liverpool’s Champions League celebrations in glorious 2D thanks to the guys at 442oons in the video below…

The 29-year-old began last season as Southampton’s No.1 under Mark Hughes, but lost his place to former Manchester City glovesman Angus Gunn and was unable to retain the shirt.

Seems rather pointless

Alisson is amongst one of the best keepers in the world and has an almost spotless injury record throughout his career.

The Brazilian international has only ever missed 19 days of his career through injury, resulting in a combined five-game absence; he missed four games for Internacional and one for Roma.

These two instances are the only evidence of an injury occurring throughout the 26-year-old’s career, and combined with the fact that he is near faultless, there seems little chance of him ever losing the No.1 shirt at Anfield.

In that respect, it seems rather pointless of the Reds to spend money on a No.2 when they will likely only ever feature rarely for the Champions League winners.

In the cup competitions, Liverpool can call on young Caoimhin Kelleher who was an unused substitute in the Champions League final – the 20-year-old Irishman is an impressive talent and can easily replace Alisson for the games in the FA Cup and the League Cup.

A move for McCarthy would seem rather pointless, in all honesty.

Tottenham Transfer Roundup: Ceballos price set, Jack Clarke latest, Janssen attracting interest

[ad_pod ]

July edges ever nearer, and soon the Premier League’s 20 clubs will start pre-season training as they prepare for the new campaign. Mauricio Pochettino, like his counterparts in England’s top tier, will be hoping to have his squad ready as soon as possible. Today’s Spurs transfer roundup includes an update in the pursuit of a Spanish international, a deal struck for an 18-year-old winger and the potential end of a nightmare for one of the club’s strikers.

Ceballos price set

According to AS, Real Madrid have set the price for their 22-year-old midfielder Dani Ceballos. Los Merengues are reportedly willing to listen to offers of €50m (£44.7m) for the Spurs target who is currently at the U21 European Championships.

Clarke deal close to complete

The Sun is reporting that Jack Clarke will soon complete his transfer to Tottenham from Leeds. Spurs will apparently pay £8.5m for the player, plus add-ons. Clarke played 25 games for the Whites last season, scoring two goals.

Anderlecht have eyes on Janssen

Vincent Janssen is attracting interest from Anderlecht according to Het Laatste Nieuws. The 25-year-old Dutch striker has not had the best of time of in North London – managing just six goals in 42 appearances – but a move to the Belgian League to play under Vincent Kompany could revive his career.

Southampton: Jordy Clasie Dutch demand no surprise

What do Southampton do with Jordy Clasie?

The 27-year-old has been a flop at St. Mary’s and they now seem to be having quite the dilemma with trying to offload him permanently.

De Telegraaf (via Sport Witness) reports that AZ, who are keen on signing Clasie this summer, want Southampton to pay part of his salary.

Having had him on their books since 2015, though, you would think that the south coast club would not want to pay any more money given his failure.

Bearing that in mind, a sell to another club may be the best option here. That, however, could prove problematic, with the same report stating Clasie is determined to continue in Dutch football and will not consider anything else.

Frustrating from Southampton’s point of view? Probably. It has severely limited the amount of potential suitors. The Premier League outfit, however, should not be surprised.

As well as the Netherlands being his native country, of course, the Eredivisie is where he has played his best football. You only have to look at his time in England to know that.

Last season, the defensive midfielder averaged 2.6 tackles per game for Feyenoord, which is vastly more than the 1.1 he was making at Southampton back in the 2016/17 campaign.

In Dutch football’s top flight, Clasie has also proven to be way more of a creative force. He made 0.9 key passes per game and averaged 67.6 passes overall. In contrast, at Southampton, his numbers for both those passing areas were 0.3 and 38.9 (as per WhoScored).

Quite clearly, the Eredivisie is where the Netherlands international has been able to express himself best; it is his comfort zone.

Based on that, Southampton should not be surprised that they have been left in a position where they can only send him to one place this summer.

Southampton fans, what are your thoughts on the latest Clasie development? Let us know in the comment section below!

West Ham fans react as Maxi Gomez’s Uruguay are knocked out of the Copa America

[ad_pod ]

A number of West Ham United fans have been discussing the future of Celta Vigo forward Maxi Gomez after the striker saw his Uruguay team crash out of the Copa America in the quarter-finals of the competition.

Gomez did not actually play a single minute for Uruguay at the Copa America.

Indeed, he did not feature in any of their three group games against Ecuador, Japan and Chile, and he was also not included in the quarter-final clash with Peru.

Uruguay’s exit means that things could well start moving forward in regards to Gomez’s future, though, with the 22-year-old a summer transfer target for West Ham.

Jamie Carragher and Gary Neville joke around in Instagram video

[ad_pod ]

Ex-footballers turned pundits, Gary Neville and Jamie Carragher, have been tasked with announcing England’s 2019 Netball World Cup campaign and, of course, it naturally escalated into a bit of friendly banter.

England will be one of the favourites to clinch the trophy this summer and will be aiming to replicate their past success after the incredible gold medal-winning run at the Commonwealth Games in 2018.

Neville’s sister, Tracey Neville, is their coach and, since the competition is being held in Liverpool, Neville was quick to joke about his family’s reputation in the area, but expressed his hope that his sister will get a good reception.

This, of course, was a dig based at his Manchester United past, something which is almost impossible to detach from Neville’s media presence.

He posted a video on

/Bzqy744Fm9G/?utm_source=ig_web_copy_link” data-lasso->Instagram alongside Carragher as the duo announced the tournament with some banter on the side.

Quirky as they usually are in their performances, it was not surprising that they would joke around while also taking the World Cup seriously.

Carragher replied with a single word for Neville, labelling him an “icon” in a tongue-in-cheek reference towards his attire.

Spurs fans excited over shock Dani Alves links

[ad_pod ]

Tottenham Hotspur fans are excited over the prospect of signing Dani Alves on a free transfer this summer.

Duncan Castles, the Daily Record journalist, claimed on the Transfer Window Podcast that Spurs had entered into talks over the possible acquisition of the Brazil international.

Alves left PSG at the end of the season and is available to sign without a transfer fee this summer.

Castles claims that Spurs could sell both Kieran Trippier and Serge Aurier in this transfer window and Alves could become the club’s third signing of the summer, after Tanguy Ndombele and Jack Clarke arrived from Lyon and Leeds United respectively.

Alves, of course, is 36 and is approaching the twilight of his career but supporters are excited at the prospect of bringing in a serial winner who has played for the likes of PSG, Barcelona and Juventus.

Tottenham fans thrilled at prospect of keeping Eriksen and signing Lo Celso

[ad_pod ]

Tottenham Hotspur fans are thrilled with the prospect of signing Giovani Lo Celso from Real Betis and keeping Christian Eriksen at the club.

Sky Sports News journalist Michael Bridge reported on Tuesday that the club’s pursuit of Lo Celso was not linked to the Denmark international’s future.

Bridge said: “Here’s the key for Spurs – it won’t be him or Eriksen, it could be him and Eriksen.”

Indeed, Eriksen outlined his intention to take on a new challenge in the aftermath of the Champions League final but has thus far attracted no bids from the likes of Real Madrid and Juventus.

It means that he could remain at the club for the 2019/20 season, with Lo Celso another target.

The Betis star, per the Daily Mirror, is wanted for a fee that could reach £60m.

That deal would be in addition to the acquisition of Lyon midfielder Tanguy Ndombele, for a club-record fee.

And Spurs fans are drooling over the prospect of having two gifted playmakers in their squad for next season.

Rangers fans react to Jak Alnwick’s temporary departure

[ad_pod ]

Jak Alnwick has joined Blackpool on loan, Rangers have confirmed, and lots of fans have been reacting to the announcement.

Alnwick joins the League One side for a season with his Ibrox future uncertain – he is behind the likes of Allan McGregor and Wes Foderingham in the pecking order, though their superior age may mean Alnwick has more chances in the future.

The 26-year-old’s contract at the Gers expires next summer and it’s unknown if he’ll be offered a new deal; a strong showing out on loan will surely do his chances no harm.

The keeper spent last season on loan in League One, playing 43 games for Scunthorpe United. The former Newcastle stopper will be hoping for a better time in England’s third tier this time around though, as the Iron were relegated on the final day of the season.

Alnwick was brought to the Gers in January in 2017 by Mark Warburton but has only made 11 appearances for the club in total.

Here’s what the Rangers fans had to say after his future was confirmed on Twitter, with some hoping for a successful loan spell and others questioning the move…

Arsenal are becoming their worst fear: Tottenham Hotspur

[ad_pod ]

There has long been talk of a supposed power shift in north London.

Back when Arsenal were the dominant force, it was Tottenham Hotspur who were always being tipped to finally claw their way back in front of the Gunners and become the foremost team in the area.

That has, quite clearly, already happened, but now there is another transformation underway.

Indeed, Spurs have enjoyed quite the couple of seasons. They have routinely challenged for the Premier League title, have recently moved into a sparkling new stadium, the biggest in the capital, and reached the Champions League final in 2018/19. They have also just spent over £50m on Tanguy Ndombele, the revered Lyon midfielder who was linked with the likes of Barcelona and Juventus.

Their season is defined by optimism and the hope of bigger and better things to come. A trophy does not feel too far away.

And then there’s Arsenal.

One only needs to look at their squad list to see they aren’t quite the force they were under Arsene Wenger as the Invincibles swept their way to the Premier League title.

They have a fine goalkeeper in Bernd Leno, but their defence is, by and large, an absolute mess. Hector Bellerin is their best defender and he’s known more for his attacking runs than his actual defending. Shkodran Mustafi is somehow still at the club, while Laurent Koscielny recently refused to travel on their pre-season tour, reportedly because he wants a move.

That’s Laurent Koscielny, Arsenal’s captain. Their midfield could use some trimming too, with the likes of Mohamed Elneny and Matteo Guendouzi both patently average. Granit Xhaka is fine and would probably look quite good in a better team.

As for the attacking ranks, both Alexandre Lacazette and Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang can score goals but Mesut Ozil – despite his mini pre-season revival – is anonymous all too regularly and Henrikh Mkhitaryan has flopped to the point where Alex Iwobi gets in the team regularly.

Now take a look at those names and compare with the Spurs starting XI. Only Bellerin has a chance of making it into Pochettino’s best team and, even then, Serge Aurier might edge him out.

And then there are the transfers.

Arsenal, it has been claimed, don’t really have any money. A transfer budget of £45m would have been brilliant a decade ago but now? It buys you Lewis Dunk – if reports are to believed – and leaves you absolutely no change.

Spurs have spent more than the Gunners’ entire budget on Ndombele.

The only glimmer of a silver lining manifested on Thursday as Arsenal sealed a season-long loan deal for Dani Ceballos, a player who had consistently been linked with their north London rivals in recent weeks.

And then further good news poured in as William Saliba’s transfer was also confirmed, though he will return to Saint Etienne on loan for the 2019/20 season.

Another attacking-minded player and a teenager plying his trade in a different country won’t resolve Arsenal’s multitude of pressing defensive problems and, if they enter the season with largely what they have, what is the realistic aim?

Watch Arsenal Live Streams With StreamFootball.tv Below

They aren’t anywhere near the stratosphere of Manchester City and Liverpool when it comes to the talent of their squad and, as discussed, they’re worse than Spurs – and probably Chelsea.

It’s top-four or bust and then hope for some luck in the cups. But even in the latter, they’ll have to hope they don’t play City or Liverpool. When they faced Spurs in the Carabao Cup last season, they lost 2-0 at the Emirates. Manchester United beat them in the FA Cup fourth round.

They could do well in the Europa League – Arsenal reached the final in 18/19, only to be absolutely battered by Chelsea – but, even then, it’s almost a consolation prize when Spurs will be playing on Tuesday and Wednesday nights.

What has been written here will be remarkably familiar for a generation of Spurs fans who grew up watching Arsenal win things, compete for things and spend big money on truly exceptional players. They had a progressive manager who was always striving to improve and always looking for an edge. Even when they didn’t win, they competed in the way they knew how, sticking to a tried and tested gameplan that won fans the world over.

Spurs, meanwhile, were hoping to finish fourth, desperately clawing to some form of relevance. Any player who came in and succeeded was lured away by a bigger, hungrier club with deeper pockets. Derby days meant everything because it was all they had.

The times have changed, the tables turned.

Arsenal now embody what Spurs used to be. They have become everything they used to mock when they were at the top of the tree.

It will take a truly gargantuan effort to ensure there’s another power shift in north London.

Everton star Lucas Digne welcomes Moise Kean and Jean-Phillipe Gbamin to the ranks

[ad_pod ]

When new players join their new teams, it’s essential they’re integrated properly to ensure they enjoy a prosperous working relationship with their teammates.

Everton have been busy under Marco Siva, who’s introduced a total of ten new players to the Toffees’ ranks in the past couple of years, including Moise Kean, Andre Gomes, Jean-Phillipe Gbamin, Fabian Delph, Jonas Lossl, Richarlison, Bernard, and more.

For such an extensive integration project to run smoothly, it requires a particular kind of character to oversee proceedings, and someone should be both experienced and empathetic.

Step forward, Lucas Digne. The little Frenchman only joined the Toffees last season himself and has been the newbie at four different clubs in his career so he’ll know the intricacies of squad initiation like the back of his hand.

Pictured alongside Gbamin and Kean, Digne posted a simple but warm message to his Instagram story:

As trivial as it may seem, it really is the little things that go a long, long way during such a vital period of social bonding.

Everton fans may well be looking forward to seeing some of their new signings in action in their opening game of the season away at Crystal Palace.
