Leeds fans hail Eddie Nketiah as striker scores debut goal

[ad_pod ]

Eddie Nketiah scored on his Leeds United debut as Marcelo Bielsa’s side recorded a 3-0 win over Salford City in the EFL Cup on Tuesday night.

Much of the pre-match talk had been about Salford but Leeds proved far too strong on the evening – scoring three unanswered goals to book their spot in the next round.

Nketiah completed a loan move to the Whites last Thursday and is due to spend the 2019-20 campaign at Elland Road.

The 20-year-old was not involved in the team’s Championship clash against Nottingham Forest on Saturday, which finished 1-1.

However, the Arsenal attacker was thrown into the fold against Salford.

He scored in the latter stages of the first half against the League Two club, before Gaetano Berardi and Mateusz Klich struck to make it 3-0.

As expected, the Leeds fans were delighted with Nketiah’s contribution and many took to social media to lavish praise on the new arrival, as seen below:

Newcastle fans react as Gary Neville criticises their style under Rafael Benitez

[ad_pod ]Loads of Newcastle fans are reacting to some comments from Gary Neville, as the Sky Sports pundit slammed the style of football the Magpies played under Rafael Benitez.Benitez to Steve Bruce, a Champions League winner to an FA Cup runner-up, a former Liverpool and Real Madrid boss to a former Hull City and Sunderland boss, a world-renowned tactician to the man with the second-lowest win percentage of any Premier League manager to take charge of over 200 games. To Neville though, Magpies fans won’t miss the Benitez era, as the pundit has claimed he was “bored†whenever he went to St. James’ Park over the last few years.”To me, I’m not knocking Rafa Benitez – I think he is a brilliant manager – but I think Newcastle, when I go up there, it should just be mad,” he told Sky Sports, via The Chronicle.”It should be really loud, the games should be mad. There should be incident and excitement. To be fair, some games are always 0-0. Every time I went up there over two years, I was bored. I was bored.””Unsurprisingly, fans have taken issue with the comment from Neville, mainly due to his own managerial failings. The Manchester United legend joined Valencia as head coach back in 2015, but managed just 28 league games, only ten of which he won.Check out some of the Toon Army’s reactions to his comments down below…

Scout report: Takefusa Kubo

[ad_pod ]

Just recently, Real Madrid sent shockwaves through Spain when they officially confirmed the signing of young Japanese starlet Takefusa Kubo.

Sure, signing young stars is nothing out of the ordinary but this particular gem was a player who was previously at Barcelona. Needless to say, that made the deal all the sweeter.

After all, we are talking about the kid dubbed the “Japanese Messi”, and while there’s been no shortage of “future Messis” in the past, Kubo is one many are putting their faith in to become the next big thing.

But what exactly makes the 18-year-old starlet such a big prize for Real Madrid and do his skills warrant all those big claims?

Kubo is a prolific attacking midfielder who’s famous for his extraordinary technical ability, close control of the ball, passing prowess, versatility and dribbling. At just 18, the Japanese gem is already showing signs of traits that many associate with Messi, while he is fairly similar to the Argentine in both his stature and style.

Being just 5ft 8, Kubo is rather short but extremely agile and blessed with pace. When he plays he oozes flair and has a strong left foot, just like Messi. But his technical side is best seen when passing and moving. According to Wyscout’s database – that goes back three years for the youngster – on average he averages a pass completion rate of 77.8% and he also plays 1.57 long passes per game.

But that doesn’t particularly do him justice. Upon further inspection of those passing stats, we see 1.88 through balls. Let’s take a quick look how that usually transpires on the pitch.

Since Kubo is blessed with both pace and technical ability, he can receive the ball under pressure, shake off his markers and make progressive runs into the final third. Once he is in position, he is capable of playing pinpoint through balls.

But none of that would be possible without his dribbling abilities. As we can read out from Wyscout’s stats above, Kubo averaged a massive 8.02 dribbles per game across all competitions while successfully completing 50.2% of all of them. That’s four completed dribbles per game for the young 18-year-old midfielder.

We also have to note that he doesn’t just beat his markers one on one but he won’t shy away from taking on multiple defenders at the same time. Notice in the example below how he blazes through three defenders in a zig-zag move and gets into the box with seamless ease. This puts him just in front of the goalkeeper but unfortunately he misses his target in the end.

And finally, we have to mention Kubo’s versatility. He is an attacking midfielder first and foremost but that doesn’t mean he cannot be deployed elsewhere as well. Since he’s got pace and technical prowess on the ball, he can operate all over midfield as well as in the more advanced areas of the pitch.

Wyscout’s database has him in at least three major positions on the pitch but, judging by his heatmap, he likes to have the licence to roam the pitch and wreak havoc wherever he can. We can also see that there’s a slight tendency to drop deeper when needed, meaning he provides backup for his teammates when fuelling the build-up and assisting the progression of the ball.

Real Madrid themselves have described their new gem as a player who is “technical ability personified” and “a highly talented player boasting immense quality” and also one that “displays great intelligence when it comes to decision-making, gets away from his marker with ease and links up well with teammates.”

That statement, as we’ve hopefully been able to demonstrate in this scout report, might just hold true.

Kubo’s future certainly looks very bright if the early signs are anything to go by.

The talent is certainly there but it remains to be seen whether he fulfils it and truly becomes the “Japanese Messi”.

Arsenal legend Ian Wright posts throwback to ridiculous goal against Everton

Crikey – the sheer disrespect he showed those defenders. They had families to go home to you know, Ian. Their children likely never enjoyed school again, their wives probably left them, their dogs almost certainly ran away, and their sons and daughters probably wanted to swap football for ‘ultimate frisbee’ to avoid ever experiencing similar humiliation.

Choo, choo hype train rolling in (A.K.A Eddie Nketiah, Wiley, and Rio Ferdinand) …

Complete and utter carnage.

Goals from Corey Whitely and a brace from Lewis Collins then put Newport firmly in control before half-time.

Coming out for the second half trailing 4-1, the young Irons needed some inspiration and Joe Powell netted from the penalty spot two minutes after the restart.

Veron Parkes then reduced the arrears to one in the 53rd minute and Kai Corbett levelled proceedings in the final 10 minutes.

Having netted the opener, Scully scored an 88th-minute winner to give West Ham all three points in their first game of Group M, which also features Exeter City and Cheltenham.

Leeds turned down opportunity to sign Marcus Edwards from Spurs

[ad_pod ]

This article is part of Football FanCast’s Transfer Focus series, which provides opinion and analysis on recent transfer news…

Leeds United rejected the chance to sign Marcus Edwards from Tottenham Hotspur in the summer, per Football Insider.

What’s the word?

The attacking midfielder left Spurs in the transfer window, joining Portuguese club Vitoria on deadline day.

However, the report states that he was offered to the Championship club as a possible part-exchange option within the deal taking Jack Clarke to north London.

Leeds ultimately opted against taking Edwards, with the club keen to do a straight-cash deal.

The report states that Spurs paid an initial £9.5m for Clarke, who has been loaned back to the Championship club for the 2019/20 campaign.

The right call

Edwards has never really showed any indication that he can make any impact for an English club at a respectable level.

He made just one appearance during his time at Spurs and a loan spell at Norwich City was cut short due to concerns over his attitude.

A spell with Excelsior last season was more productive but the club were still relegated from the Dutch top-flight.

He needs to get his career back on track before he can think about playing for a club with such a pedigree as Leeds.

His time with Vitoria is the perfect opportunity to do that.

Manchester United fans react to James Maddison reports

[ad_pod ]

Having enjoyed a fine debut campaign in the top-flight with Leicester last year, James Maddison’s stock has understandably gone through the roof in the last 12 months.

The 22-year-old has taken to the Premier League like a duck to water, registering seven goals and seven assists in the top-flight last season.

Now, The Manchester Evening News claim Manchester United are continuing to monitor the midfielder over a potential move. The report mentions the Red Devils’ original interest had emerged in June, but that a move this summer was not deemed “foreseeable”.

It further claims Maddison fits the “ideal profile of target” Ole Gunnar Solskjaer is looking for, and that he is preferred over Tottenham playmaker Christian Eriksen.

After hearing the latest update on their possible swoop for the 22-year-old, United fans took to Twitter to share their thoughts on the matter.

Many supporters of the Manchester side revealed they are simply being set up for “disappointment”, and couldn’t envisage him actually joining the club.

Some Red Devils fans questioned why they hadn’t pursued a move for Maddison in the summer transfer window, and mocked the idea they are “monitoring” yet another player.

Ex-Liverpool star Daniel Sturridge posts image from Trabzonspor debut

After spending six years at Liverpool it must be quite strange for Reds supporters to see Sturridge in another kit.

For some fans it could be quite emotional seeing the attacker playing for another club as it serves as a reminder of the potential he once showed but never fulfilled.

This is a man who netted 21 Premier League goals in a single season five years ago, but despite only just turning 30, his career seems to be fizzling out.

He played only 20 minutes for his new side on his debut, as he still needs to get fully match fit after joining the club towards the end of August.

Tottenham fans react to supporter’s talkSPORT rant about club’s owners

[ad_pod ]

Loads of Tottenham Hotspur fans on Twitter have reacted after talkSPORT posted a clip of a Spurs supporter going on an epic rant about the club’s owners during a phone-in.

The call came on the back of the north London outfit throwing away a two-goal lead in the Champions League during the week to draw 2-2, which has seemingly left some of the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium faithful more than frustrated.

The fan, Matt, spoke about a number of subjects including how Daniel Levy and ENIC aren’t backing manager Mauricio Pochettino enough – especially in the transfer market – and how they are essentially holding the club back because they don’t care about winning trophies.

Many supporters were quick to have their say on their fellow fan’s arguments, and it’s fair to say that plenty agreed with what he was saying, with one individual claiming he was “100% right”.

However, not everyone is on the same page and some suggested he should take a look at Mauricio Pochettino’s failings too, with one simply saying “stop blaming Levy for highly-paid employees not doing their job”.

Man Utd target James Maddison can take them to the next level, says Gary Pallister

[ad_pod ]

This article is part of Football FanCast’s Pundit View series, which provides opinion and analysis on recent quotes from journalists, pundits, players and managers…

As quoted by The Manchester Evening News, Gary Pallister has revealed James Maddison would be able to take Manchester United to the “next level”.

What did he say?

The England U21 international enjoyed a fine debut campaign in the Premier League last season after joining Leicester from Norwich last summer. The 22-year-old scored seven goals and seven assists in 36 games in the top-flight, and his displays have reportedly attracted the interest of United.

Reports in recent weeks have suggested the Red Devils are considering making a swoop for the attacking midfielder next summer as they look to reshape their squad. Now, Pallister has thrown his backing behind a potential move, and revealed he was particularly impressed with his performance against Tottenham last weekend.

Watch Manchester United Live Streams With StreamFootball.tv Below

He said: “There was a lot of talk about him in the press. He stood out in the game against Tottenham, he’s got a lot of quality and energy – and he obviously scored the winner. He’s the type of player who can take Man United to the next level. However, Ole needs to try his best for now to squeeze the best out of the squad he has for the next few months.”

Goals

Amidst all the talk of United’s questionable decision to let both Romelu Lukaku and Alexis Sanchez leave this summer, the Red Devils have an equally pressing problem when it comes to goals from the midfield areas. Jesse Lingard, Juan Mata and Angel Gomes – all of whom have played in the number ten role for United this season – have yet to score. A swoop for Maddison would go a long way to solving that.

The Foxes man has been used in a variety of roles this season, but the one time he was deployed in the attacking midfield position, he scored – adding to his seven strikes in the Premier League last season. Having players from deep who can find the back of the net can dramatically ease the burden and pressure on those at the top of the attack. United desperately need someone like that right now.
