Glasgow Rangers were dealt a big blow back in April earlier this year when versatile star Dujon Sterling suffered a long-term Achilles injury.
The English star had to be stretchered off during a Europa League clash, and Barry Ferguson confirmed after the game that he would be a long-term absentee for the Gers.
Sterling had to have surgery on the injury and it now remains to be seen when the versatile Rangers man will be available for action again for the Scottish Premiership giants.
He has played 70 times, in a multitude of positions, for the Light Blues since his move from the Premier League side in 2023, and the club could repeat their success with him by signing another player from Chelsea.
Rangers in talks to sign Chelsea defender
The Ibrox giants can find themselves a quality defensive option by raiding Chelsea for another player who is unlikely to break into their first-team squad next season.

Mega money deals, controversial moves and big-name flops. This is the home of transfer news and opinion across Football FanCast.
According to football.london reporter Bobby Vincent, Rangers are one of a number of clubs interested in a deal to sign Ishe Samuels-Smith from the English side this summer to bolster Russell Martin’s options at the back.
The journalist claims that the Gers have held club-to-club talks with Chelsea to sign the full-back on loan, whilst Sunderland, Middlesbrough, and Stoke City are also keen on snapping him up.
Vincent adds that Rangers, and three English teams, are pushing to secure the 19-year-old left-back, who was signed from Everton for £4m in 2023, on loan for the 2025/26 campaign, with his future set to be ‘clearer’ within the next two weeks.
Why Rangers should sign Ishe Samuels-Smith
Whilst it may not be a permanent deal, as it was with Sterling, Rangers should sign Samuels-Smith from Chelsea because he could follow in the footsteps of the last signing from the Blues.
As aforementioned, Sterling has been an incredibly versatile operator for the Gers, playing at right-back, right midfield, defensive midfield, left-back, and centre-back during his time in Glasgow so far.

In Samuels-Smith, Rangers could find another versatile star who can operate in a host of different positions to cover when needed for Martin, as a terrific squad option.
The 19-year-old is yet to make a senior appearance in his career, which makes it difficult to predict what his role in the squad will be, but his positions at youth level for Chelsea and Everton show that he could be called upon in several areas of the pitch.

As you can see in the table above, Samuels-Smith is similar to Sterling in the sense that he has the potential to play as a full-back, a centre-back, or as a defensive midfielder, albeit as a left-sided option primarily, instead of a right-sided one.
In terms of his quality, his former Everton coach David Unsworth claimed that he has an “incredible future” ahead of him, whilst analyst Kai Watson believes that he has “elite” potential.
The post above also shows that he impressed Watson at U21 level in the Premier League 2 last season, which suggests that the teenage sensation would arrive at Ibrox this summer full of confidence to take on his first go at senior football.
Overall, as a low-risk loan move, Samuels-Smith could be a smart signing for the Gers as an extremely versatile young talent with the potential to offer value in multiple positions, possibly making him excellent cover for Sterling until he returns from his injury.

England take series with victory in second Test, after less than 11 overs on final day

Farhan Ahmed claimed four wickets to seal the second Youth Test•Getty Images
England completed a comprehensive win on the final day of the second Youth Men’s Test at Cheltenham, beating Sri Lanka by an innings and 53 runs.Resuming their second innings on 246 for 7 and facing an impossible task in terms of saving the game, the tourists required a further 78 runs just to make their opponents bat again. Needing to take a further three wickets to wrap up victory in the match and the series, the Young Lions needed only 10.5 overs to finish the job at the College Ground.Eschewing the new ball, captain Hamza Shaikh instead trusted in his spinners, Farhan Ahmed and Charlie Barnard finishing the job without recourse to pace. Nottinghamshire off spinner Ahmed proved especially effective, claiming impressive figures of 4 for 59 from 26.5 overs with seven maidens as Sri Lanka were dismissed for 271.Having summoned stiff resistance the previous evening to carry the contest into a fourth day, Vihas Thewmika fell for a 38-ball 18 in the fourth over of the morning, offering a straightforward return catch to Lancashire slow left armer Barnard, who finished with figures of 2 for 55 from 21 overs.Manuja Chanthuka came and went quickly, falling lbw to Ahmed for one as the home side closed in on an inside-the-distance victory. Ahmed then finished things off, pinning last man Sheshan Marasinghe on the front foot in his next over.Determined to prove a point after having been held to a frustrating draw in a rain-affected contest in the first Test at Wormsley, the Young Lions dominated every aspect of this game to stamp their authority and complete a thoroughly-deserved one-nil series win at one of English cricket’s most iconic festivals.
An “incredible” midfielder is now “set to join” Leeds United alongside their move for Newcastle United’s Sean Longstaff, according to Sky Sports reporter Florian Plettenberg on X.
Leeds closing in on two new midfielders
Leeds have been targeting Longstaff for quite some time, and the deal is now finally edging closer to completion, with transfer expert Fabrizio Romano revealing the midfielder is set to undergo a medical ahead of a move.
Daniel Farke will be relieved to finally get a new central midfielder through the door, having missed out on Habib Diarra to Premier League rivals Sunderland, but the manager remains keen on securing the signature of another player.
It was recently revealed the Whites have agreed personal terms with Hoffenheim midfielder Anton Stach, who is valued at £17m by the German club, and there has now been a major new update on their pursuit of the 26-year-old.
In a recent update from Plettenberg on X, it was revealed that “new talks” over a deal for Stach took place on Wednesday, with Leeds stepping up their pursuit of the Hoffenheim star, amid rival interest from Bundesliga side Stuttgart.

Stuttgart have also held talks over a deal for the German, but Hoffenheim are yet to strike an agreement with either club, although the feeling is that he is now “set to join Leeds”, which will come as welcome news for Farke.
However, it remains to be seen whether the Premier League side are willing to match the aforementioned asking price of around £17m plus bonuses.
Stach could be "incredible" addition to Farke's squad
The Hoffenheim maestro has received praise from former teammate Dominik Kohr, who lauded him for his “incredible” shooting ability, while he also excels in a number of other key areas, most often catching the eye from a defensive point of view.
The two-time Germany international is particularly impressive at winning back possession, as showcased by the number of interceptions he has averaged per 90 over the past year, while the defensive midfielder’s 6-foot-4 frame means he is also impressive in the air.

Leeds will need to be defensively solid if they are to stand a chance of avoiding an immediate return to the Championship, and Stach’s displays for Hoffenheim prove he could be a fantastic signing, so it is exciting news that the move has progressed in recent days.

Pakistan are scheduled to play three Tests against England starting October 7•PCB
PCB chairman Mohsin Naqvi has appeared to confirm that the entirety of Pakistan’s three-Test series against England in October will take place in Pakistan. Speaking to reporters after inspecting development work at the Gaddafi Stadium in Lahore, he was reported as saying Multan and Rawalpindi would host all three Tests.Naqvi’s spokesperson Mohammad Rafiullah confirmed to ESPNcricinfo that the ECB has given the go-ahead to hold the series in Multan and Rawalpindi, and that they are satisfied with the venues.Construction work at multiple cricket stadiums in Pakistan has complicated the hosting situation ahead of England’s three-match series. Karachi, which was officially scheduled to host the second Test, will not do so because of renovations the National Stadium is undergoing. A Shanghai Corporation Organisation (SCO) meeting in Islamabad from October 15-16 rules out any chances of the second Test being played in Rawalpindi. The heads of several member nations are scheduled to arrive, and the security and accommodation demands that entail hosting that Test in the capital’s twin city are untenable.Related

PCB considers moving one Test against England offshore due to ongoing stadium work
As a result, the PCB had mooted moving one Test out of Pakistan altogether, with Abu Dhabi being the preferred option in such a scenario. Pakistan last played there in 2018 before moving their home Tests back to Pakistan after a decade of Test cricket in the UAE. The other two UAE venues, Dubai and Sharjah, will not be available owing to the Women’s T20 World Cup in the country. While Naqvi’s comments should, in theory, rule out any notions of a Test in that series taking place outside Pakistan, there has been no official comment from the PCB at this stage. The board is yet to officially finalise venues for each of the three Test matches for this series. The pressure to do so urgently is considerable. A substantial number of England fans are expected to arrive for the series, but any logistical arrangements cannot be made until venues are finalised. England head coach Brendon McCullum also pointed out his side needed to know the venues in advance to be able to pick a squad that suited the conditions.England are scheduled to arrive in Pakistan on October 2, with the first Test starting on October 7.
August is now very much on the horizon for Sunderland as a brand new Premier League campaign grows ever closer.
There will be concerns over the Black Cats’ last friendly contest amid all the excitement, however, as Regis Le Bris’ men were humbled 3-0 by Hearts on their last outing to Tynecastle.
Sunderland are already six signings down across the hectic transfer window.
Still, plenty more new faces will surely arrive through the door soon before West Ham United travel to the Stadium of Light to kick off the hotly anticipated Premier League season.
Sunderland make approach to sign Premier League star
Of course, Sunderland’s main target continues to be ex-Arsenal midfielder Granit Xhaka.
The ongoing saga involving the Switzerland international had taken a new, unexpected turn when Xhaka featured for Bayer Leverkusen during the German side’s last friendly match, despite past talk centring on the fact that the 32-year-old had reached a verbal agreement over a move to Wearside.
However, that now looks likely to be his final ever appearance for Leverkusen, with a breaking development coming to light on Monday that a fee of £15m has been agreed that will see him move back to England.
On top of that news, as per a report by Mackem News, Sunderland have also approached back-up Manchester City goalkeeper Stefan Ortega to try and strike up a deal, with the 32-year-old eager to stay put in England if he walks away from the Etihad shortly.
The £7m-rated City star is likely to depart the Etihad Stadium this summer owing to England goalkeeper James Trafford re-signing for the Citizens.
Ortega can immediately usurp Anthony Patterson on his arrival, with his top-flight know-how making him a standout signing for a Sunderland side attempting to instantly stay afloat in the top division.
Why Ortega could be a better signing than Xhaka
Winning the £90k-per-week stopper’s signature could even be a more important signing than Xhaka finally joining Le Bris’ camp, particularly if the two-time Premier League title winner goes on to play a pivotal role in securing safety for his new side.
Whilst Ortega has often been placed on the periphery at the Etihad next to Ederson stealing the limelight, the ex-Arminia Bielefeld man has shone in spurts for City when chucked into the first-team spotlight by Pep Guardiola, as seen in his vital, season-altering save against Tottenham Hotspur towards the back-end of the 23/24 campaign.
In total, the “exceptional” Ortega – as he’s been labelled previously by the City boss – has kept a promising six clean sheets in Premier League action from just 26 appearances in Manchester, with a high 67 saves also amassed in some clutch moments for the top-flight outfit.

Amazingly, those six clean sheets have also come about despite Ortega only making five Premier League starts in total for City, meaning he should come into his own even more if he suddenly becomes one of Le Bris’ main starters at the Stadium of Light.
Patterson has never experienced a Premier League outing, on the contrary, so it would be a major risk to shove Sunderland’s number one shot-stopper from the EFL straight into a top-flight contest and expect him to immediately perform, which is where Ortega could come to the rescue.
Xhaka does also have lots of Premier League experience under his belt – with a mammoth 225 appearances in the tough division with Arsenal. He’s also now a Bundesliga winner after a remarkable 2023/24 campaign.
However, Sunderland have been very busy in the middle of the park this summer, upgrading their options already, with a club-record £30m already splashed on Habib Diarra, away from Noah Sadiki also joining Le Bris’ growing ranks.
Between the midfield duo, a bumper 162 appearances have been tallied up in both Ligue 1 and the Jupiler Pro League, with the Premier League not the most daunting next step subsequently.
Therefore, it might not actually be the most pressing move to finally sign Xhaka.
Rather, Sunderland will no doubt welcome Ortega even more, with the arrival of a Premier League-proven goalkeeper simply a necessity this year. It could be the difference between relegation and staying up.

Trinbago Knight Riders (TKR) have been bolstered by the return of Chris Jordan, ahead of their CPL 2024 home leg, which kicks off on September 18. The Barbados-born England international had played five matches for TKR in 2019, taking seven wickets at an economy rate of 9.05 in their run to the knockouts, where they had lost to eventual champions Barbados in qualifier 2.Jordan, 35, will replace USA fast bowler Ali Khan, who has been sidelined from the entire CPL 2024 with injury. In June earlier this year in Barbados, Jordan enjoyed a happy homecoming, becoming the first England men’s player to take a T20I hat-trick, in a T20 World Cup game against USA.As for Dwayne Bravo, he will play in front of his home crowd for the last time in the CPL. Bravo, who will turn 41 in October, will retire from the CPL after the ongoing season, but will continue to feature in other franchise T20 leagues.Related

Injured Tahir out for ten days Defending champions Guyana Amazon Warriors have suffered a major blow, with their captain Imran Tahir ruled out for around ten days with injury. Tahir, the oldest player in the CPL at 45, had also missed Amazon Warriors’ last game against Barbados Royals with injury. Shai Hope, who stood in as captain in that game in Bridgetown, will continue to lead the side in Tahir’s absence.Big-hitting allrounder Romario Shepherd is also working his way back from injury, having hurt his toe while training. Shepherd, who had played a key role in Amazon Warriors’ run to their maiden CPL title last season, has featured in just one game so far this season in North Sound, where he slammed 32 off 16 balls.Nathan Sowter has also featured in the ILT20 in the UAE•ILT20
Amazon Warriors have brought in Nathan Sowter, the Australia-born English wristspinner, as a temporary replacement for Tahir. Born in Penrith, Sowter represented New South Wales at Under-23 level before joining Middlesex. Sowter rose to prominence in franchise cricket after winning back-to-back titles under Tom Moody at Oval Invincibles. Sowter also worked with Moody at Desert Vipers at the ILT20 2024, which was his first overseas T20 gig. Moody was so impressed with his agility in the field that he christened him ‘Racing Snake’.After their defeat to Royals, Hope admitted that they were missing Tahir, but backed the others to step up.”We’ve got to find ways to penetrate in the middle,” Hope said after the game. “I think we need to find ways to get wickets. Obviously, Imran Tahir is a big loss for us – he was one of our trump cards in the middle overs – but can’t look at that. We have got to work with what we have and find ways to get wickets. We understand the opposition [TKR] that we’re playing next and it’s important that we finish well in the death overs and take care of the batting after.”
Manchester United are assessing a move for an “outrageous” Benjamin Sesko alternative, with his club now open to a sale this summer, according to a report.
Man Utd's Sesko pursuit takes new twist
Sesko has emerged as one of Man United’s major targets at centre-forward and are in a fierce battle with Premier League rivals Newcastle United for his signature.
The Red Devils have reportedly made an offer of their own for Sesko, but if he decides to move to St. James’ Park, Ruben Amorim and co would be forced to move on to alternative targets, and another centre-forward has now entered the frame as a potential option.
That is according to a report from Caught Offside, which states Man United are now assessing a move for Paris Saint-Germain’s Goncalo Ramos, with the French club open to a sale this summer, but there could be fierce competition for his signature.
Within the Premier League, Newcastle, Aston Villa and Liverpool are named as potential suitors, while Serie A sides Napoli and Juventus have also added Ramos to their shortlist, but a deal may prove to be on the expensive side.

PSG are looking to recoup as much of the €65m (£56m) fee they shelled out as possible, despite the former Benfica man struggling to establish himself as a regular starter since arriving at the Parc des Princes, given the depth Luis Enrique has in attack.
"Outrageous" Ramos could be solid alternative to Sesko
Even though the 24-year-old often found game time hard to come by last season, he remained a regular source of goals and assists for PSG in all competitions, amassing a total of 25 attacking contributions.

Football talent scout Jacek Kulig has also praised the Portugal international for his performances at international level in the past.
There may be some concerns over the fact Ramos is yet to solidify his place as a regular starter for PSG, but at 24-years-old, the centre-forward still has plenty of time to develop his game, and he could be a solid alternative to Sesko.
