Rooney ready for Champions League

Manchester United’s in-form striker Wayne Rooney has spoken of his ambitions to win the Champions League this season, and has praised the English side’s conquerers from last year’s final, Barcelona.

The England international forward has started the 2011-12 in blistering form, and scored his second hat-trick of the season against Bolton on Saturday.

Ahead of the Premier League champions’ first European fixture of 2011-12 in midweek, Rooney has looked back at the Champions League final last season, a 3-1 defeat at the hands of the Catalan giants.

“It was nice to score but it means nothing. It is not a goal I will always look back on and remember. We lost the game, so I don’t want to think about it too much. It just goes to the back of my mind. I want to help us win games,” he told MUTV.

Barcelona will again be the team to beat his season, and Rooney agrees that United were not good enough to beat the Spanish side last term.

“It’s a fair thing to say. They are so difficult to play against. They have their midfield, then the forwards tuck in, so they outnumber you.

“It is hard to get the ball off them and when you do, you are tired from chasing around. We have to try and learn from the experience and believe, if we get there again, we will be better off for it.

“You have to applaud them for the way they played. They are a great team to watch. The aim for us is to reach that level over the next few years,” he concluded.

United have a tricky away fixture in Portugal on Wednesday in their first group stage match, as they travel to the Estadio da Luz to take on Benfica.

Top TEN horror tackles in the history of the Premier League

Goaldash is the NEW gaming phenomenon and gives you the chance to use your football knowledge, foresight and knowhow to win a jackpot of a million pounds every given week. Football and gambling has never been so much fun and at £1 a pop it is surely worth a punt.

To celebrate the launch of the game, our next article looks at ten of the most reckless tackles in recent memory

We all enjoy watching a clean committed challenge in the Premier League but we don’t want to see are the all too common rush of blood to the head type challenges, with little or no attempt to win the ball, which very often cause serious injury to the opponent involved.

When leg breaks and horrifying injuries occur it brings the issue of bad tackling in the game back on the agenda for football fans and in the last couple of years we have had a number of these incidents. These rash and dangerous tackles happen far too often in the top tier of English football. Kevin Davies recieved a lot of stick for his tackles at the weekend but in comparison to some of the worst they were minimal.

In the light of this we look back at some of the worst tackles ever seen in the history of the Premier League. If you have just eaten your lunch it will probably be best to just look at the text.

10.Chelsea v Liverpool – Peter Crouch on John Obi Mikel

More of a reckless tackle than an intentional one but this clumsy two footed challenge from Crouch ranks as one the worst ever since and I cannot bring myself to imagine the damage Crouch would have caused had he caught the Chelsea midfielder.

9.Middlesbrough v Manchester United – James Morrison on Ronaldo

Morrison may have done what all non-supporting Manchester United fans would have of liked to do to Ronaldo at this time but this deliberate x-rated tackle by the young ‘Boro player was appalling and he fully deserved his red card.

8.Arsenal v Everton – Thierry Henry on David Weir

With the game reaching its close, Henry dives in with both feet in the air at David Weir in an attempt to get the ball, he misses the man and only receives a yellow card for his horondous late challenge from the referee Jeff Winter.

7.Newcastle v Everton – Kevin Nolan on Victor Anichebe

Nolan was shown a straight red for this inexcusable two-footed tackle as he caught the young Everton striker on his lower leg. The tackle kept Anichebe out for nearly a year and it could have been so much worst.

6. Chelsea v Manchester United – Jonny Evans on Dider Drogba

Yound United defender, Jonny Evans does his best Jackie Chan impression on Didier Drogba, who proceeds to go down like he has been shot and as a result it is Drogba who receives a yellow card not Evans. An incredible decision.

5.Manchester United v Fulham – Michael Brown on Ryan Giggs

This disguising two-footed lunge by Brown on Giggs somehow only got the former Fulham man a yellow card. A shocking tackle that was followed by some equally shocking refereeing.

4.Stoke v Arsenal – Ryan Shawcross on Aaron Ramsey

Aaron Ramsey’s leg was broken following a horridly mistimed tackle from Stoke City’s Ryan Shawcross as his right tibia and fibula buckled under the challenge of Shawcross after the defender lunged in following a bad touch. Shawcross tried to console the Welshman but was told to walk away; as he headed to the dressing room he was wiping away the tears. Ramsey has since made a successful comeback into the Arsenal first team.

3.Manchester v Portsmouth 2006 – Ben Thatcher on Pedro Mendes

Thatcher practically committed GBH on Portsmouth’s Pedro Mendes with this vicious leading elbow which left the midfielder unconscious, requiring oxygen and he suffered a seizure on the way to hospital. For his dreadful challenge, Thatcher received a 6 week fine and 6 game ban from Manchester City as well as a separate 8 game ban from the FA.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=F_8b1pd3Mas&feature=player_embedded

2.Manchester United vs Manchester City – Roy Keane on Haaland

This horrendous knee high challenge in last five minutes of the game ranks among the worst ever seen in the Premier League. Keane later suggested it was a pre-meditated attack in his autobiography and was charged by the FA for bringing the game into disrepute and was banned for a further 5 games while also handing him a £150,000 fine.

1.Birmingham City v Arsenal – Martin Taylor on Eduardo

There are tackles that make you cringe and then there are tackles which make your stomach turn inside out. Martin Taylor’s tackle on Arsenal’s Eduardo was severely x-rated and the Croatian’s leg was so badly broken that bone was left protruding through both his skin and sock. The former Arsenal striker was out for a year but despite a comeback was never the same player and soon departed the Emirates.

So what is Goaldash all about then?

‘Goaldash’ is a fabulous concept which fuses the Lottery format with pre-chosen football fixtures. Whereas you may use birthdays or your own favourite numbers to pick your six numbers, with ‘Goaldash’ you need to use your foresight of the Beautiful Game to select the six teams that are likely to score the quickest in the pre-selected 24 fixtures.

It only costs £1 a pop to enter and you have the chance to win a million pounds, every given week.

All you have to do is scour the 48 teams and pick out the 6 teams that are likely to score the quickest on the Saturday afternoon. The matches are chosen from the Premier League, the Football League, as well as the Scottish divisions therefore you will have plenty to work out and strategise before you make your selections.

Playing the Lottery has just got fun, especially as your odds are a damn sight greater.

Fancy your chances? Fancy winning £1million pounds? Why not give it a go!

Ferguson: It was my worst ever day

Manchester United manager Sir Alex Ferguson has stated that the 6-1 defeat against Manchester City on Sunday was his worst ever day in football.

Roberto Mancini’s side ran riot at Old Trafford, dominating the game and punishing poor defending from the home team.

When asked to reflect on the nature of the defeat and the scoreline, the Scottish coach admitted that it was a disastrous result.

“It was our worst ever day,” Ferguson told Sky Sports.

“It’s the worst result in my history, ever. Even as a player I don’t think I ever lost 6-1. That’s a challenge for me too.”

The Premier League champions continued to attack in the second half after Jonny Evans had been sent off, and Ferguson feels his side relinquished their defensive responsibilities.

“I can’t believe the scoreline. The first goal was a blow for sure but it was retrievable at 1-0.

“The sending off was a killer for us. We kept attacking when we went 4-1 down and we should have just said: ‘We’ve had our day.’

“I thought with the experience we had with Rio Ferdinand and Patrice Evra we would have realised that. But we just kept attacking. We were so open. Sometimes there has to be common sense about it,” he stated.

The Premier League can expect a reaction from the Old Trafford outfit, and Ferguson finished by stating that his players will be motivated to forget the heavy defeat.

“That’s a perfect result for us to react to.

“There’s a lot of embarrassment in the dressing room today. They’re all disappointed in there, that will make a difference,” he concluded.

United now find themselves five points behind their cross-town rivals in the Premier League standings, and will look to move on and get three points against Everton at Goodison Park next weekend.

Three youngsters causing a stir at Old Trafford

In an age where footballers can be accused of having too much too soon and being thrust into the spotlight before they are ready, only for their form and ability to then suffer, let’s take a look at three players who have been protected and nurtured by the youth academy at United. As they begin the transition from youth team to reserves and eventually the United first team – or so they hope – let’s see what we can expect from them and what they have achieved so far in their young careers.

Ezekiel Fryers – Only born in 1992, this youngster is making waves at Old Trafford, and for all the right reasons. The versatile left-back is everything you could want in a defender – strong and athletic, not to mention able to get up and down the wing with ease.

After a stop start season last term with injuries, the youngster, who is also able to play at centre back, has made such an impression that in the Carling Cup he was selected to play alongside Carrick at centre half, and performed well, keeping a clean sheet to boot. He then appeared in his favoured position of left –back in the following round against Aldershot, and has even clocked up a champion’s league appearance to his name, replacing Evans late into the game against Galati.

The future looks bright for this young star, and with a ringing endorsement from Rio Ferdinand , who tips him to play for England in 2018, expect to see much more of the youngster.

[ad_pod id=’unruly-2′ align=’left’]

Paul Pogba – Perhaps the best known of the 3 players here, Pogba has been on the radar for a while now, and is making the transition slowly from the FA youth cup winning team of last season to featuring in both the reserves and the first team. Impressive performances in the Carling Cup meant it was not just the United faithful who became aware of the midfielder.

Described as a cross between Diaby and Viera, the 17 year old is more than capable of scoring the odd wonder goal too, and possesses a range of passing and vision that is beyond a player of such tender years.

The boy is highly regarded by manger Alex Ferguson, who believes there is much to come from an already impressive midfielder and the Frenchman can have real hope over breaking into the first team this season.

Larnell Cole – A player who has caught the eye in a major way this season through Carling Cup action was added – along with Fryers – to the list of squad players for the midweek Champions League game and trained with the first team. Cole is an attacking midfielder by trade,  and will occasionally feature on the wing, with the Manchester born player already causing a stir at the young age of 18.

Hailed as a brilliant professional already by Warren Joyce, who commended the player for being willing to spend time at full back to iron out any defensive issues, he looks like really being able to make the difference in tight games.

With 3 caps already for the Under 19s at international level, it is not only United who have taken note of Cole’s potential. Having scored a hat-trick in a 6-1 victory over City’s youth team, oozing class during the game, he has the potential to be not only a fan favourite, but someone who bangs in the goals from midfield.

Roman to give AVB £40 million striker?

When things look bleak at Chelsea, owner Abramovich has one default setting – buy a big money striker. First Shevchenko and now Torres. With both epic failures, you could be forgiven for thinking that the one the billionaire Russian has his heart set on this January is Berbatov, yet according to Barcelona based publication Sport, Chelsea have strong interest in Gonzalo Higuain, the Real Madrid striker who has scored 12 goals in 13 La Liga games and the man who AVB feels can revive his strike force.

Despite Higuain’s importance to the Real Madrid team, president Perez is prepared to listen to any offers that meet his valuation according to Sport, and with Anelka wanted by Spurs and clearly unfancied by AVB, and Drogba turning down a contract extension for one final pay day, Chelsea need forwards who can score desperately, and with their season falling apart at the seams, the Argentine Higuain is seen as the man to do this.

How much of this actually will come to pass in January remains to be seen, and whilst it is more than credible to believe Chelsea are after Higuain, it remains dubious if Real will actually sell such a prolific forward, and may just be a low attempt to unsettle the side from a pro Barcelona paper before the Classico.

The most impressive thing about Manchester City

Last Monday, in the fixture soon to be known as the Oil Rag derby – at least by my regular readers, Chelsea hosted Manchester City at Stamford Bridge, with the Premier League leaders 10 points clear of their hosts. A week and two fixtures later, including Manchester City ’s first loss all season to a media-persecuted Chelsea side, and the gap between the two sides has only shrunk by one to nine points.

Before the game, Roberto Mancini was quick to display his awareness of his fellow title contenders, in a season where pundits and press continue to link City and the title synonymously, “I think [Chelsea] can win it,” said Mancini , of the side that won the title in 2010, “Last year Chelsea had a big lead [over Manchester United ] but in the end United won the title by seven or eight points plus,” stated the Italian, showing an appreciation of Ferguson’s bounce-back-ability. It is a threat that Manchester City are fully aware of, “In my opinion, United are still favourites.

They’ve been there and done it,” said Manchester City right back Micah Richards , “United were favourites at the start of the season and regardless of how we’ve played, they are still firm favourites,” continued the defender, downplaying a derby demolition of United, that saw 6-1 illuminate the Old Trafford scoreboard.

The words may have seemed unambitious to title-aspiring Citizens, especially considering they went on to lose to to Andre Villas-Boas ’ men, but in hindsight the consciousness displayed was wise.

Despite losing, ultimately to a Frank Lampard penalty fired home straight down the middle, Manchester City revived their run of form instantaneously, winning a less than straightforward tie against Arsenal at Etihad on Sunday. A David Silva goal was enough to secure all three points in a game which ensured Manchester City would have the status as top for Christmas in their own hands, something they’ve achieved three times previously, but never going on to win the league. Silva ’s goal was Man City’s 50th Premier League goal this season, 16 games in, making them the fastest team to reach this tally since Spurs in 1962/63. Their 1-0 victory against the Gunners was their last fixture against teams in the top 7.

In their fixtures against Manchester United, Tottenham, Chelsea, Arsenal, Liverpool and Newcastle, City have acquired 13 points from an available 18, losing only once – their only loss all season. This is where Manchester City are proving their mettle, with Mancini, against the best. Last season, Manchester City gained just 9 points against the 2009/10 Top Four. This season, Manchester City have already levelled that points tally against the Top Four of 2010/11, excluding themselves.

This potential, and most-importantly on-target, improvement in form against the top teams in the Premier League, is where Manchester City can make up the points that will keep their heads above, who they consider, the favourites still, Manchester United. Last season City proved that they could start rolling out default victories against the lesser teams of the division, picking up 18 points from 18 against the three teams promoted to the Premier League.

[ad_pod id=’unruly-2′ align=’left’]

They’ve done it again so far this season too, picking up victories against Q.P.R, Norwich and Swansea, but last year’s campaign questioned City’s credentials as title contenders as they came unstuck against the bigger teams. Convincing and at times comprehensive, defeats to Manchester United , Chelsea , Arsenal and Liverpool ensured that Manchester City finished 3rd, 9 points off of their rivals, Manchester United, who won the top-flight for the 19th time.

This season it is Manchester City that can go into Christmas as the league leaders, but it isn’t just their improved form against the top teams that are keeping Manchester City as the pace setters. In a modern game, increasingly lacking in demure, it is Mancini ’s modest approach, becoming more and more transpired through his players too with every interview, that could act as a strong foundation for the richly-assembled squad to go on and win City’s first top-flight title in over 40 years.

“We can’t think that we can win the title without a fight from United,” said Mancini, appreciating that experience can often stand strong against talent, “It’s impossible.” Mancini’s demeanour, the coiffed hair, brazen scarf and affable suits make his appeal all the more thorough and the attitude he display, is setting his players in the right mindset for a title challenge in which, despite the evident quality and unparalleled form so far this season, they don’t seem to be the favourites to everyone.

If there’s one man you want on board to disseminate a message from the manager to the fans, the players, the world, it is the only player playing every week that has been there since his youth career: Micah Richards .

“Just because we were clear for so long does not mean we’re going to walk the title,” said the England international, “In my mind there is no pressure on us because teams like United, Arsenal, Chelsea and Liverpool have been doing it for so long.” He continued to emphasize the Mancini-imposed philosophy of continuity, which is becoming ever more present at the Etihad – they’re unbeaten there in 2011 at home winning 26 from 28 and drawing two, “‘It’s about carrying on doing what we’ve been doing.

We’ve done well because we feel there’s no pressure on us.

We just go out and play our football.” If City continues to impress against the best, there is no stopping them in their quest for the Premier League, ‘We came into the season just trying to build on last time and fighting United, who are current champions. To win the league would be a massive achievement.”

United set for disappointment as Lerby confirms Sneijder stay

It appears Manchester United’s hopes of signing midfielder Wesley Sneijder have taken another hit as the Dutchman looks to be staying at Inter Milan, reports the Mirror.

Wesley Sneijder has long been on the radar of Alex Ferguson, who is looking to add quality of the Dutchman’s ilk into an often toothless Man United midfield.

However, much like the outcome of the protracted transfer saga of this past summer, Sneijder looks to be staying put.

Sneijder’s representative Soren Lerby told La Gazzetta dello Sport: “I really think Wesley will stay at Inter. A few weeks ago he said he was 90 per cent sure he would stay.”

Lerby also brought up the fact that there are problems between Sneijder and Inter officials, something United will surely continue to monitor.

The Dutch international has been troubled by injury this season, resulting in only eight league appearances and the single goal.

United’s great rivals Manchester City also appear keen on landing the creative midfielder, with a swap deal involving Carlos Tevez suggested.

Saha reflects on dream debut

Louis Saha has reflected on a dream home debut for Tottenham against Newcastle, and praised coach Harry Redknapp and strike partner Emmanuel Adebayor.

The French attacker scored twice in Spurs’ 5-0 victory over Alan Pardew’s men at White Hart Lane on Saturday, and was delighted with how things went.

“It was a great, great feeling,” Saha told Mirror Football.

“I am not that young, but it’s just like I was living the dream of a young boy – to make your debut and score on your home ground, it’s just amazing.”

Saha has thanked boss Redknapp for his faith in him, and was impressed by fellow forward Adebayor.

“He is right up there with the best managers because he has so much quality around the team and he gets more than 100% from every player.

“It’s immense. That shows he has great quality.

“It’s great to work for him. He gives you so much confidence. He has a desire to win things. You can see it in his eyes.

“The last two weeks have been really difficult for him and it was nice to end it with a great win and a great performance.

“Adebayor was immense. Physically, his work-rate and desire to get involved in everything was great.

“He was involved in everything. It’s dead easy to play with him and he is a great character to be around,” Saha concluded.

Why I beg to differ Mr Samuel

One of the columns I most look forward to reading in any publication, apart from Mourinho’s match day notes of course, is that of the ‘Sports Journalist of the year’ Daily Mail writer Martin Samuel. Never short of an opinion and quite witty with that, he always manages to bring a smile to my face and generally I do find myself agreeing with what he has to say. On this occasion however, I feel so compelled to disagree that I am spending my Saturday evening writing this article – living the high life I know- but otherwise I would just end up ranting to my kitten about why I disagree, and I think I may just get a better response from you reading this – then again…

Martin Samuels disagrees with the decision to remove John Terry as England captain, and is basically making the point that we no longer adhere to the innocent until guilty mantra, and at that have basically convicted Terry already.

I do agree with Martin – the decision to remove Terry as skipper should never have had to be made by the FA – but whereas Samuel feels that Terry should remain leader I feel that he should never have regained the armband after being stripped of it in the first place. To lose the armband once in your career is unlucky – more so for Wayne Bridge – but to do it twice is downright careless, and if Terry is not careful he will give Sergio Ramos a run for his money in terms of destroying precious accolades.

Whilst Terry did not drop the armband under a bus, he metaphorically may as well have, with his off the field conduct throughout his career being hardly befitting of a national team leader – then again this is England, so quite a lot goes. Even so, Terry has pushed the FA one step too far (again) and this time they have decided to go above Capello’s head and remove JT.

Whilst I fully appreciate the point Samuels makes about a lynch mob, especially on social networking site Twitter, the fact of the matter is, innocent or guilty, Terry is a divisive presence in the dressing room and has been for some time now.

How many other Captains can you recall having as many handshake debacles as Giggs has extra marital activity? No one. The major mistake Capello made was in giving the central defender the armband back in the first place – not to mention the way he did it. No one in their right mind could blame Rio for declining to enter the farcical running for the position again – in fact most people will have respected him for it.

Terry has the ability to be a leader – no one would deny this, and at times the player has a heart of a lion – yet you cannot lead if players will not follow, and more and more are speaking out against Terry in the wake of the court case adjournment until after the Euros in the summer. Would it be right for him to lead the team – no it would not, and thankfully the FA have recognised this.

Cue the endless coverage and debate over who should be the next skipper – something that will have the media and public talking until one is appointed, and even then it probably will not be the right decision – oh how Capello must be regretting taking on our national side now.

Like it or not, Terry is innocent until guilty – I totally agree with Samuels here, who could not have made the point that Terry was an ‘alledged’ racist any clearer if he had highlighted and used font 500 for the multiple times he uses the word in a short piece, but whatever the verdict in the trial, Terry simply cannot lead the national team now, and should not have ever been given the opportunity to do so again long before this latest scandal.

The player himself is ‘taking time’ to consider his future after such a hurtful decision by the FA, and one can only hope this time leads him to feel that retirement is the way forward – and not just because of his issues off the field – has anyone seen Chelsea defend this season? Terry claims to be a rock at the back – allegedly.
