"Like Lionel Messi" – Smith stunned by Nottingham Forest’s Elliot Anderson

Sky Sports pundit Alan Smith heaped high praise on a Nottingham Forest player during their 1-0 win over Crystal Palace on Monday night, even comparing him to the great Lionel Messi. The Reds had to wait all weekend to get back underway after the international break, but it was worth the wait as they claimed all three points at home to Palace.

Nottingham Forest back to winning ways

Forest have made an excellent start to the Premier League season, and that continued as Chris Wood’s goal was enough to see the Reds climb to eighth place and just two points adrift of fifth-place Brighton. Wood has been Forest’s standout performer so far this season, and manager Nuno Espirito Santo was full of praise for his striker, not for his goals but for his all-round play: “Amazing, we are delighted with not only his goals.

“All his actions in the game, how he leads the team, his set pieces, and more than all that is the impact he has in the dressing room. His leadership, he is a very experienced player for the young lads. We cannot thank him enough.”

On the result, Nuno was “delighted” that his side secured the win in front of their home supporters: “I saw it was difficult, but so I’m happy we can finally give this moment to our fans, who are always helping and supporting us, so I’m especially delighted for them.”

Wood will obviously take a lot of the plaudits, as he scored the only goal of the game, but there was another Forest player that came in for high praise as well.

Alan Smith compares Elliot Anderson to Lionel Messi

Sky Sports pundit Alan Smith was left impressed by the dribbling of Nottingham Forest’s Elliot Anderson and compared him to the great Lionel Messi. The midfielder went past three or four players in the first 20 minutes of the match, and it left Smith impressed by what he had just seen.

Anderson, who was labelled “excellent” by Eddie Howe last season, joined the Reds during the summer transfer window and has already become a key player, starting seven of their eight Premier League games and recording one assist, which came against Wolves back in August.

The 21-year-old, who is on a weekly wage of £40,000 at the City Ground, received high praise from Smith during Monday’s commentary: “It was like Lionel Messi there in the box. Not once but twice, happy feet. Wonderful play from Elliot Anderson.”

Anderson is obviously a long way from being a player like Messi, but the midfielder will be pleased with his performance on Monday night, as he arguably put in one of his most impressive displays since joining the club.

Vincent Kompany kept star striker Harry Kane on the bench after he complained of a calf problem during the club's Champions League clash with Celtic in midweek. In the Englishman's absence, veteran forward Thomas Muller was deployed as the team's No.9.

The Bundesliga leaders got off to a scrappy start as they were unable to produce any major goalscoring opportunities, with Eintracht Frankfurt being the more dominant side initially. Bayern, however, broke the deadlock on the stroke of half-time as Michael Olise handed his team the lead. Leroy Sane received a through ball and made a run inside the penalty box before squaring the ball towards Olise, who comfortably slotted home.

The Bavarian side then doubled their lead just past the hour mark as Hiroki Ito scored his first-ever goal for the club. Kevin Trapp completely misjudged Olise's curling corner as the ball came off Rasmus Kristensen's chest before falling into Ito's foot who found the back of the net. Soon after Iro's strike, Kane was finally introduced into the game in the 64th minute as he replaced Muller up front.

Bayern added a third goal in the 83rd minute as Jamal Musiala scored with a brilliant solo move. Alphonso Davies won the ball in their half before finding Musiala with a through pass. The German star twisted and turned as he galloped forward. He even lost balance momentarily inside the box but was quick to recover before scoring past Trapp.

Just seconds before the full-time whistle, second-half substitutes Kingsley Coman and Serge Gnabry combined before the latter scored a fourth goal for his side to seal a comprehensive win.

In Kane's absence, Olise turned hero for Kompany's team as he broke the deadlock right before half-time and then delivered an inch-perfect corner from which Ito scored his maiden goal and sealed three points for his side.

    THE BIG LOSER

Trapp's horrible mistake in the second half led to Bayern doubling their lead, which virtually took the game away from Eintracht Frankfurt. The goalkeeper completely misjudged Olise's corner as he failed to fist the ball away.

The soccer community quickly rallied around the American soccer legend, with tributes and well-wishes pouring in from former teammates, fans, and soccer organizations.

Meola underwent an unspecified procedure after the heart attack. He told Front Row Soccer that he ran four miles last Saturday and had the heart attack five days later.

The former goalkeeper used this experience to advocate for regular health check-ups.

“If I get one of you to go to the doctor and get a checkup, this was all worth it for me,” Meola said, according to Front Row Soccer. “I’m going to be fine in a week, but I should have been smarter.”

Brighton in race to sign £5m "Barella regen" in January to partner Baleba

Brighton are now racing to sign a young star who has been dubbed Nicolo Barella 2.0 as they look to get a deal done before January, according to a fresh report.

Brighton keeping pace at the top

Fabian Hurzeler’s arrival at the AMEX Stadium in the wake of Roberto De Zerbi’s departure last season raised more than a few eyebrows, but the 31-year-old has made a strong start to his career in the Premier League.

Backed by heavy investment bettered only by Chelsea across the top flight over the summer, the Seagulls have lost just once so far this season and currently sit sixth in the Premier League, just two points behind fourth placed Aston Villa.

They could have been higher if it hadn’t been for a late collapse against Wolves, which saw them throw away a 2-0 lead to draw 2-2 in stoppage time courtesy of a goal from Matheus Cunha to rescue a point for Gary O’Neil’s side.

And Hurzeler didn’t hold back after the game, accusing his side of a lack of maturity and professionalism.

“We lost two points and we failed today in our development. We were not mature enough, not professional enough to win this game. We have to learn quick from this”, he told reporters after the game.

“We were not ruthless enough in defending set pieces, we had a big chance to go for the third goal, we missed this and then get punished. We were not acting professionally and we have to learn from this. That is very important.”

However, Brighton’s recent model has always been to buy younger players and develop them into such top professionals before selling for a profit, and it is one that they are not planning to change any time soon.

Brighton in urgent race to sign Italian midfielder

Now, it has emerged that the Seagulls are in a race with several other clubs from Europe to sign Empoli’s Jacopo Fazzini this January.

The midfielder, who doesn’t turn 22 until March, has impressed in his short career to date and has drawn glowing praise. Football Analyst Ben Mattinson dubbed him a [Nico] “Barella Regen” on X, adding that “he’s a really exciting prospect who will surely develop into a top midfielder for Italy and whichever team he ends up at”.

And Brighton are trying to ensure that team is them, with reports in France [via Sport Witness] claiming that both OGC Nice and the Seagulls are hot on the tail of the midfielder, whose future, they claim, could be “decided in the coming weeks” ahead of a potential move in January.

European club may make new dream move for £12,000-p/w Celtic player in 2025

Whilst Celtic are once again on course to win the Scottish Premiership, one European side have now reportedly identified one of their defenders as their dream signing.

Celtic transfer news

Going head-to-head with Aberdeen rather than Rangers in the Scottish Premiership title race so far this season, Celtic haven’t skipped a beat and sit above their new rivals on goal difference having both avoided defeat in the opening nine games of the campaign. The Bhoys most recently enjoyed a comfortable afternoon against Motherwell, easing to a 3-0 victory to maintain their place at the top.

As success continues to arrive, meanwhile, those away from the action have reportedly turned their attention towards further reinforcements when 2025 arrives with Dario Osario recently linked to Celtic Park.

Rodgers must drop Forrest to unleash Celtic's "breathtaking" magician

The Chile star is a man in-demand following his recent rise at Midtjylland and could yet complete a move to the Scottish champions to hand Brendan Rodgers an attacking boost. It’s not just incomings that could steal the headlines, however, with one of Rodgers’ defenders potentially heading for the exit door.

According to Sportbladet via Sport Witness, Malmo are now dreaming of signing Gustaf Lagerbielke, who is currently on loan away from Celtic at FC Twente. The defender has reportedly rejected the Swedish club in the past but could now get a second opportunity to change his mind in 2025.

Celtic defender Carl Starfelt.

Whether or not Lagerbielke has a future at Celtic remains to be seen after he struggled for game time last season and was allowed to leave on loan. Earning a reported £12,000-a-week, the Bhoys could decide to cash in on the 24-year-old and help Malmo to realise a dream move in the process when the 2025 summer window arrives.

"Impressive" Lagerbielke is at a crossroads

Having made just three appearances whilst on loan at FC Twente so far this season, Lagerbielke’s struggles have only worsened since leaving Celtic for the season, giving him plenty to think about. At somewhat of a crossroads, a move back to Sweden and Malmo wouldn’t exactly be a bad route to take back to the top, with game time the most important factor in his next switch.

It certainly seems a long way back from here to break into Rodgers’ Celtic side in what has been an unexpected fall. It was, of course, only last year that the defender’s passing range was dubbed “impressive” by Celtic writer Ryan McGinlay as he began to find his feet in Scotland. Now, however, an exit seems the best solution for all parties.

As Celtic march towards yet another title in Scotland, on loan Lagerbielke must come to a decision on his future. After rejecting Malmo once, he may well decide to realise their dream should they come calling a second time in next summer’s transfer window.

Nike is taking on adidas in the nostalgia wars with its timely Total 90 revival – a football culture phenomenon is back

The American sportswear giant is bringing back the iconic silhouette – but not in the form that many people would expect

A cultural phenomenon has returned with the relaunch of the iconic Total 90 – a silo that became a movement, transcending boots, balls and kits. Nike has thrown it back to a defining period in football culture, rebooting T90 after 12 long years and transporting us straight back to the glory days.

The revival may not take the form many would have expected or hoped for, as Nike re-launch the Total 90 III as a streetwear sneaker rather than the football boot we are all clamouring for – but nevertheless, we can just be glad that T90 is back in our lives.

A timely riposte to the adidas Predator juggernaut that is dominating the football marketing sphere, Total 90 is back and we are here for it.

  • Getty Images Sport

    Noughties football heritage

Total 90 is synonymous with one of football's great eras: the noughties. In the eyes of those who grew up on an appetite of peak Wayne Rooney, Francesco Totti and Fernando Torres, that is when football peaked – iconic names balling out with T90s on foot, wearing the iconic shirt template and weaving their magic with the T90 Aerow ball.

Its influence ran deep; notable GOATs Lionel Messi and Ronaldinho both wore T90s for a time before moving on to the adidas F50s and Nike Tiempo boots to which they are respectively indelibly linked in our minds.

Arguably the most iconic iteration of the boot arrived in 2004 ahead of the European Championship in the form of the tongue-less Total 90 III, instantly recognisable with the circled '90' on the instep and the panelled design that allowed for infinite colour combinations.

Back in the days when kit templates worked wonders, the accompanying shirts featured a framing stitch and pronounced dashes on the sleeves and collar. For the international federations Nike supplied, the designs marked the noughties era as the nonconforming circled front number made them all standouts between 2004-2006. Think Cristiano Ronaldo at Euro 2004.

As for the ball, the simple three-ring design of the T90 Aerow 1 was a huge hit – supplying countless with iconic moments in the Premier League, La Liga and even the Champions League.

    Transcending boots and balls

This wasn't just about boots, balls and shirts – Total 90 became a football culture movement that transcended the pitch having captured the zeitgeist of the early 2000s. It seems that is what Nike are trying to hark back to with their re-release, which comes in the form of a streetwear trainer rather than a football boot.

The tracksuits were everywhere; the advertising campaigns were unbeaten; the ball was everyone's go-to in the park or on the playground. This was perhaps the first sign of football's huge potential influence on wider culture that has been fully realised in recent years.

For football-crazed millennials, alongside Preds and Pro Evolution Soccer, Total 90 became such a recognisable accompaniment to growing up in the noughties. Pure nostalgia.

  • Getty

    What happened to Total 90?

It seems strange that such a strong cultural phenomenon could ever die out, but by the early 2010s, differing tastes, priorities and advancing technology saw Nike discontinue the silo.

We haven't seen a new Total 90 boot since 2013, with the Laser IV Nike's last drop before the sportswear giant shifted its focus to their new Hypervenom – itself since discontinued – and continuing to develop the iconic Mercurial.

On the pitch, the Total 90 had been all about power and precision, but there was a perception that elite players' needs were moving more towards speed, agility and touch, and the decision was made to render the T90 redundant.

    Long tease

Twelve long years later and Nike have seen fit to bring back the noughties icon, and it feels as though it's been a long time coming.

The marketing campaign has been interesting, with no standalone, polished advert packed full of their biggest stars to announce the return of Total 90 after such a long absence. Instead, the comeback has been drip-fed over a number of months.

Nike first teased the drop last summer, although that was hidden away on their SNKRS app. Netherlands legend Edgar Davids was then spotted wearing a pair in a five-a-side tournament hosted by rapper Travis Scott in November, before Nike revealed more incoming colourways a month later.

The American sportswear behemoth has also recently re-released Portugal's 2004 T90 home shirt having handed the duty of being the nation's kit supplier over to PUMA, as well as the iconic Aerow ball to mark the end of their 25-year partnership with the Premier League – all pointing to a wider comeback in the near future.

Sunderland wasted millions on a flop who earned far more than Bellingham

Sunderland fans will be very much aware that the congested winter months will be crucial to how their promotion prospects play out, with so much Championship football taking place across the rest of November and then December to come.

Up to this point, Regis Le Bris’ men have shown they are worthy promotion contenders – hence their current position right at the top of the second tier table – but no wins in their last three in the challenging league will already be making some Black Cats fans worried that they will inevitably slip off the summit.

Regis Le Bris for Lorient.

Still, it’s been a fantastic start for the Wearside outfit, with some smart business in the summer helping them so far in being the early pace-setters.

The best summer business at Sunderland

Transfer activity in and out of the Stadium of Light over the off-season had the potential to derail the Black Cats, with the crushing blow of Jack Clarke leaving for Ipswich Town obviously hitting Sunderland hard.

The Mackems never outright replaced Clarke, but the Frenchman should be given credit for getting more out of Romaine Mundle down the left, who has filled the void of Clarke well with four goals fired home from 16 second-tier appearances.

He does almost feel like a new signing, considering he only joined at the start of 2024, but the likes of Wilson Isidor and Chris Mepham – who were purchases made by the former Lorient boss – have also settled in fantastically well.

Isidor has one more league goal next to his name than Mundle as Sunderland’s main leading man up top, whilst Mepham has been a defensive rock since also joining on loan from AFC Bournemouth, winning 5.4 duels per contest when playing for his new side in league action.

Sunderland haven’t always come away from a busy transfer window feeling pleased with their flurry of incomings, however, with their Premier League days full of notable expensive duds.

One sticks out, in particular…

Sunderland's £10m nightmare

Now very much deep into the twilight years of his playing days at 36 years of age, Jeremain Lens will not recollect his time on Wearside with much fondness.

Costing £8m to get through the door in 2015 to link up with one of his former bosses Dick Advocaat, this would end up being a rather poor-fitting match, rather than a glorious reunion for both the winger and the Dutch manager.

Before making his move to England a reality, Lens was fresh off a fruitful spell playing in Ukraine with Dynamo Kyiv, with 16 goals and 19 assists across 78 contests.

In stark contrast, the right winger only lasted 24 games at the Stadium of Light before exiting for pastures new at Beskitas in 2018, draining Sunderland of a whole lot of money in the process.

Lens only registered a meagre four goals and two assists during his short but cursed stay at the then top-flight outfit, with his overall wage costs coming in at around £2m, when you take into account his only full season at the club.

His £40k-per-week wage also meant he raked in over two times more than what Jobe Bellingham earns right now for Sunderland, with the promising midfielder only on a reasonable £12.5k-per-week salary, despite bettering Lens’ goal output by five.

In total, on top of his now extortionate £8m price tag, the damage done to Sunderland’s back account off the back of the Dutchman underperforming was around the £10m mark.

This isn’t the only case where Sunderland dented their bank account rashly when in the big time, with lessons hopefully learnt now, as Le Bris and Co go about their business more shrewdly in their mission to leap back up to the Premier League.

    THE BIGGER PICTURE

The result, however, came after a tactical reshuffle by Slot at the break. The manager made a bold decision to introduce Harvey Elliott, Alexis Mac Allister and Andy Robertson, replacing Szoboszlai, Curtis Jones and Kostas Tsimikas to freshen things up in the middle. The Dutchman revealed that his team’s lacklustre first-half display prompted the substitutions, and upon reflection, he admitted that it was a mistake to start Szoboszlai in the first place.

  • WHAT SLOT SAID

The Hungarian midfielder, known for his incredible work rate and endurance, was visibly not at his best during the opening 45 minutes. Admitting his selection mistake, Slot told reporters: "Today, if I could do it one more time over, I would have started it differently than I started today – but you don't know this in advance. Every time I am sitting here and talking about Dominik, I'm talking about he is a machine. He can keep on going, running and running and running.

"It was maybe the first time this season I saw a different energy from him. Which is maybe normal. Maybe I made a mistake by playing him because he gives so much every single game. The good news is he only played 45 and is more rested for the upcoming week now than he is if I played him for 90."

    WHAT HAPPENED?

Liverpool are clear favourites to win the Premier League title for a record-equalling 20th time in the 2024/25 campaign as they currently find themselves 15 points above second-placed Arsenal at the top of the table. After finishing behind Manchester City and Arsenal in the last two seasons, Arne Slot – who replaced Jurgen Klopp last summer – was determined to bring back the title at Anfield and accordingly motivated his players during their pre-season in the US, as revealed by star defender Andy Robertson.

  • WHAT ANDY ROBERTON SAID

Speaking to reporters, the Scottish full-back said: "When you’re at a club like Liverpool, you can’t afford a settling-in period. It’s a massive club that expects to win trophies – and the manager was very clear on that from his first day. I remember his first meeting in America, and he basically said, ‘we finished third last season and the season before, but we now want to finish above the other two.’

“So, in his mind, it was clear that he was coming to win trophies. It wasn’t like he’d be happy with the top four. It remains to be seen whether we do win trophies, but he’s put us in a helluva good place to try to achieve that. “When the manager and the coaches took the job, I think their remit was ‘we want to win trophies, we want Liverpool to be successful and not just by finishing in the top four.’ The players could get onboard with that."

He added: "At the same time, the manager came into a changing room and saw players that expect and are hungry to win trophies. We got off to a good start, and that momentum has carried on, but there’s still nine games to go in the league, and we’ve got a lot of work to do. But as we sit here today, we’re in a really good spot."

Liverpool have now contacted £40m+ "box-to-box" star about January move

Liverpool have approached the entourage of a Serie A star about a potential move to Anfield in January, according to reports.

Liverpool transfer news

The Reds and FSG had a quiet first summer under new manager Arne Slot, signing just two new players. The first, goalkeeper Giorgi Mamardashvili, remains with Valencia and won’t move to Anfield until next summer, while the second, Federico Chiesa, has barely featured for the Reds due to fitness and injury problems.

Cody Gakpo and Federico Chiesa for Liverpool

After the New Year, however, Slot may be a bit busier in the transfer market. The Reds have already been linked with a number of big, and small, names, including Fulham’s American full-back Antonee Robinson, Sporting Lisbon starlet Geovany Quenda, and Chelsea’s Mykhailo Mudryk.

Meanwhile, a deal for Sevilla defender Loic Bade, according to a recent report from Spain, already been agreed. The Spanish publication claims that Bade had been a target for Liverpool since last summer and that he will now join them in January, assuming ‘”nothing goes wrong.”

Ederson approached by Liverpool

Another player who could be Merseyside bound next year is Atalanta midfielder Ederson. According to sports journalist Rudy Galetti, Liverpool and FSG have recently approached the Brazilian’s entourage to “explore the negotiation margins for January.”

Galetti claims that Manchester United have also approached Ederson’s team, while Manchester City are in the race for the 25-year-old, too.

Atalanta, however, wouldn’t want to lose the Brazil international, who has been capped twice by his country, in the winter, says Galetti, but could be willing to listen to bids in excess of £42 million next summer.

Ederson began his career in his home country with Desportivo Brasil. Following spells with Cruzeiro, Corinthians, and Fortaleza, he moved to Italian club Salernitana in January 2022. He spent just six months at the Stadio Arechi before being snapped up by Atalanta, where he’s since established himself as one of Serie A’s top holding midfielders.

Last season, he also played a starring role as La Dea won the Europa League for the first-ever time, beating Bayer Leverkusen in the final.

Back in January, South American football expert Tim Vickery described Ederson to Sky Sports as a “strong, well-built central midfielder.”

“Strong on the ball, versatile, box-to-box. Strong personality as well. The first time I remember him was his professional debut really. He was thrown in the deep end in a big team called Cruzeiro, who were really on the slide. They were relegated in dreadful form and even in this bad context, he stood out, so a lot of virtues.”

Ederson’s former Corinthians head coach Tiago Nunes, meanwhile, previously described him as “a player with a lot of strength, a lot of physical ability, a player who was a powerful striker on the ball, with good technique.”
