Tim Bresnan produces some Headingley magic – to the detriment of Yorkshire

If Warwickshire win the Championship, a little patch of earth at Headingley could become hallowed ground. It will be found at first slip at the Kirkstall Lane End and it may be marked by a slight indentation. They could even call it “Bresnan’s Dip”. Yorkshire, their own Championship hopes scuppered in that moment, could be tempted to fill it in, although as the player involved spent the best part of two decades at Yorkshire, they could always be tempted to celebrate the moment and offer grudging praise to “one of our own”.When Tim Bresnan plunged mightily to the ground during the last ball of the day, to hold a splendid catch off Liam Norwell, one-handed to his right, Yorkshire lost Dawid Malan in the process. At 50 for 2, with England’s No. 3 still intact, a chase of 224 on a tough pitch felt gettable. Malan, who sweated 66 balls over 12, certainly felt so. At 50 for 3, England’s No. 3 catered for, Yorkshire probably need a seaming pitch to change character markedly to have a realistic chance of getting over the line. With rain forecast, we may have to wait until Wednesday to find out.Craig Miles, who had earlier removed Adam Lyth via another Bresnan catch, said: “To get someone of Dawid Malan’s calibre out with the last ball of the day took something pretty special from Tim. It was a remarkable catch and great to finish the day on that note.”Bresnan’s catch shook Yorkshire to their foundations, metaphorically if not quite literally. Remarkably, it was his third catch at first slip in the final session. George Hill edged an outswinger from Chris Woakes to give him the gentlest of warm-ups. Lyth’s edge of a full, wide ball from Miles was another gimme. Then, an hour or so later, with the floodlights shining ever more brightly, came the tour de force, rescued an inch from the turf. It was probably the first time a Headingley crowd has ever groaned at a Bresnan success story.Bresnan also had a part in Warwickshire’s second-innings 176. It had three pillars: Dom Sibley played with commendable self-discipline, as is his wont; Michael Burgess, as he had in the first innings, flowed so freely that he might have been playing on a different pitch; and Bresnan, Yorkshire to his core, must have wondered as he picked off late runs why his old county’s attack had waned just as the match was on the line.Yorkshire’s one bowler to possess a permanent threat was Jordan Thompson, who was in combative mood, and who drew maximum life and seam movement from the pitch as a result: Bresnan, who left to make way for the likes of Thompson, an allrounder of character, would have been impressed. Steve Patterson was also in typically parsimonious mood. But Matthew Fisher bowled too many four-balls across both innings and Ben Coad, although highly economical, did not quite carry the threat that might have been expected.Few batters minimise risk like Sibley. He probably also knows where the nearest fire extinguisher is in every dressing room, and only breathes in after carrying out a thorough check of pollution levels. It took him 15 balls to get off the mark and it set the tone – outswing from Fisher and the gentlest of deflections, soft hands, angled bat, through backward point. When the bowlers are on top, he hunkers down like an elderly man preparing for a harsh winter. At 27 for 4 in 17 overs, he must have been feeling bereft. Will Rhodes kept him company for 11 overs before he was gated by Patterson. Thompson, the heavy-eyebrowed firebrand, cleaned up Chris Benjamin and Sam Hain in successive balls. Benjamin’s booming off drive was very T20 and Lyth said thank you at second slip. Hain collected a king pair, a huge bonus for Yorkshire, this time totally squared up as Thompson made one rasp away from him from back of a length. Matty Lamb managed to be lbw and bowled by the same ball from Patterson; the umpire’s finger was raised for lbw at the same time that the off bail was flicked aside. Obsessive students of the Laws, and there are many, might like to pontificate whether “bowled” was the right decision.Sibley ground on. Just because he leaves a ball, it does not mean it is done with. He relives it, digs deep into its character, explores it for every character trait should he meet it again. Despite that, he did include a few thick edges to third man as his score mounted. When he fended just short of Hill at first slip, the bowler, Thompson, screamed in exasperation and his eyebrows blackened like a young Fred Trueman. He dismissed Sibley next ball, an excellent delivery and a catch at the wicket. When Thompson took two wickets in an over for the second time, making one bounce to dismiss Woakes for a third-ball duck, Yorkshire were back in the game. Even more so when Burgess, who had again played with a clever attacking intent – walking down the pitch at times, but never wildly – fell for 37 from 58 balls, driving Fisher to point where Harry Brook had moved seconds earlier. At 108 for 7, Warwickshire’s lead was 155. Quick Kill was the requirement. Instead, Bresnan had something of a gentle homecoming, making 36 from 61 balls as if he had spent his life batting on this square and wondered what all the fuss was about. The umpires examined the ball several times, but Yorkshire never really found one that got them out of the mire. By the time Coad had Bresnan leg before and Thompson removed last man Norwell at mid-off for the first five-for of his career, Warwickshire were favourites.”We knew what Brez can do,” Thompson said. “He’s done it year in, year out for us. He hung around and got them to a challenging score and then took those catches late on.”That counted as a gushing accolade down Yorkshire way. Bresnan will reckon he made room for a good pro in the making. But he was not about to give him the Championship.

Sold for £500k: Newcastle must rue losing ace who’s worth more than Tonali

Newcastle United have rapidly transformed into one of the teams to fear in the Premier League, largely down to the investment from the Saudi PIF.

They took over the Magpies from Mike Ashley back in 2021, splashing nearly £500m on new signings to try and push the club back towards the top end of the table.

Eddie Howe has been the man tasked with the challenge, leading the club to a top-four finish in 2022/23, before missing out on European football last season in what was an injury-hit campaign.

Newcastle United manager Eddie Howe.

Signings such as Alexander Isak and Anthony Gordon have been crucial in their recent success, with the duo forming an excellent partnership in attacking areas – registering 32 league goals between them last season alone.

However, one other new addition has found life on Tyneside more of a struggle, unable to make a huge impact after his big-money move to St James’ Park last summer.

Sandro Tonali’s time at Newcastle United

Midfielder Sandro Tonali has endured a difficult start to life as a Newcastle player over the past 12 months, only making 14 appearances for the club in all competitions.

joelinton-sandro-tonali-newcastle-opinion

The 24-year-old moved to England in a £55m deal from Serie A side AC Milan, but after scoring just six minutes into his debut against Aston Villa, he would fail to find the back of the net again after a lengthy spell on the sidelines.

The Italian was hit with a 10-month ban for breaking gambling rules during his time at Milan, with the midfielder only just making his return in the Carabao Cup victory over Nottingham Forest at the end of last month.

He still has a huge part to play under Howe on Tyneside, making his first league appearance since October last year during the 2-1 win over Tottenham Hotspur last weekend.

However, as a result of his absence, he’s seen his market value plummet, with Tonali now valued lower than one player who left Newcastle on the cheap numerous years ago.

Sandro Tonali’s market value in 2024

Striker Ivan Toney has gone on to achieve wonderful things in English football, but he could’ve been having those moments in a Newcastle shirt had the club not parted ways with the now 28-year-old back in 2018.

Brentford striker Ivan Toney

The Magpies sold the striker to League One side Peterborough United in a £500k deal – a price tag that looks to be a bargain given his recent goalscoring exploits.

Toney, who like Tonali, missed a large period of fixtures for breaking betting rules, scored 72 goals in 141 games for Brentford during his four-year stint in London.

His unbelievable record includes a campaign where he scored 31 Championship goals during the 2020/21 campaign, before hitting 20 Premier League goals a couple of years later – leading to boss Thomas Frank dubbing the Englishman as a "monster".

He subsequently left the Bees this summer in a £40m deal to join Saudi Arabian side Al-Ahli – with his transfer fee higher than the market value of current Magpies star Tonali, who’s only valued at £32m as per Transfermarkt.

Given his recent form in front of goal along with his huge transfer fee, there must be some regret at Newcastle that they offloaded the striker too soon – with his talents in attacking areas undoubtedly aiding Howe’s side in 2024.

Whilst they received a sell-on fee after his move to Brentford, it wouldn’t compare to the fee the Bees received this summer, with the club having a howler by allowing a top-quality striker to depart at such a minimal fee.

FURACÃO JOGA NO CONTRA-ATAQUE

O Furacão, por sua vez, deu campo para o Corinthians e buscou jogar no erro do adversário, sendo mais efetivo, no que diz a respeito a finalizações ao gol, quando partia para a área.

JÔ ACERTA A TRAVE

WILLIAN ENTRA NO INTERVALO

  • WHAT HAPPENED?

The oft-criticized Leagues Cup will be played next summer, according to a report from . The tournament, which included every MLS club and all Liga MX sides, was thrown into jeopardy due to the expected clash with the new 2025 Club World Cup and Gold Cup. Last year, the tournament ran from July 26-August 25, with MLS postponing its regular season.

The newly-formed Club World Cup, which announced its draw Thursday afternoon, will run from June 15-July 13. Meanwhile, the Gold Cup, an international competition that typically includes players from MLS, is set for June 14-July 6.

  • THE BIGGER PICTURE

MLS is reportedly considering changes to Leagues Cup next year, though. The 47-team field could be shrunk to just 36, with 18 teams from each league set to feature. Seattle Sounders and Inter Miami will both be in the Club World Cup, although their matchups with top European sides would likely lead to early exits from the competition.

  • DID YOU KNOW?

There also remains concerns that Leagues Cup conflicts with U.S. Open Cup – a tournament that includes the entirety of the United States soccer pyramid. Last year, MLS clubs were given the option to send their MLS Next Pro youth sides to the tournament. As a result, only eight MLS first team sides appeared.

Man City could land dream signing for Savinho in swoop for £60m PL star

Manchester City opened their Premier League season with a comfortable and assured 2-0 victory over Chelsea at Stamford Bridge on Sunday.

Goals from Erling Haaland and Mateo Kovacic either side of half-time were enough to secure all three points for the Cityzens, who are looking to defend their title once again.

Enzo Maresca, one of Pep Guardiola's former coaches at The Etihad, failed to get the better of his former colleague, as the Blues rarely caused too many problems.

Man City's only senior addition to the first-team squad in the summer transfer window so far has been Brazil international Savinho, and he enjoyed a strong debut in London.

Savinho's Premier League debut in numbers

The 20-year-old winger was given the nod to start the game by Guardiola, despite the likes of Jack Grealish and Phil Foden being in the squad, and caught the eye in the opening 45 minutes.

He was withdrawn with a minor knee problem, that should not cause him to miss any matches, but impressed with the minutes he did get, showcasing his direct play and creative threat on the right flank for the Premier League champions.

Wearing 26 on his sky blue jersey, you could be forgiven for thinking that City had brought Riyad Mahrez back to the club with the way he dribbled past players with ease.

As you can see in the image above, the left-footed starlet completed all of his attempted dribbles and created three chances for his teammates in just 45 minutes.

It was an impressive debut from the Brazil international and Guardiola could now land a dream signing for the former Girona star by landing another dynamic attacker before the end of the window.

Why Man City should sign Premier League wizard

TEAMtalk recently reported that the Cityzens are considering a late approach to sign Crystal Palace wizard Eberechi Eze, who is valued at around £60m by the London club.

As a right-footed attacking midfielder, the England international could line up as one of the two eights in Guardiola's side, with Kevin de Bruyne on the left, and use his preferred side to open up and feed the ball to Savio down the flank.

As you can see in the table above, Eze carries his own attacking threat as a scorer and has the quality to consistently create chances for his teammates, with 2.0 key passes per game.

The 26-year-old ace also ranked within the top 13% of attacking midfielders and wingers in the division for shot-creating actions per 90 (4.82), and the top 8% for successful take-ons per 90 (3.02).

This suggests that Eze, who was dubbed an "entertainer" by analyst Ben Mattinson, has the ability to constantly find his teammates in shooting positions whilst also being able to take opposition players out of the game.

Therefore, the English whiz could be a dream for Savinho as he could carry the ball forward and open up on his favoured right foot to consistently feed the ball to the Brazilian winger, giving him plenty of opportunities to drive at his man and make things happen out wide.

INEOS signed him before: Man Utd eye move for "complete" 22 y/o left-back

Amid Luke Shaw's history of injury struggles and Tyrell Malacia's season on the sidelines last time out, Manchester United have reportedly set their sights on a new left-back this summer.

Man Utd left-back problems

Shaw's Premier League campaign came to an end in February last season, before he finally made his return to action at Euro 2024, where his introduction very nearly helped England pick up what would have been a historic piece of silverware, only for Spain to come out on top in the final.

Manchester United defender Luke Shaw.

Meanwhile, Malacia's Premier League season didn't even get started, with last July's knee injury ruling him out of action for the entirety of the campaign. Even now, the Dutchman has not travelled for Manchester United's pre-season tour of the USA, instead continuing his recovery in the hope of finally returning to action next month.

Without the two left-backs, the Red Devils turned to Diogo Dalot. Had the Portugal international also suffered an injury, however, Erik ten Hag would have been left pondering his next move. Highlighting the need for extra cover down the left-hand side, INEOS and Sir Jim Ratcliffe could now turn to a familiar face this summer.

According to Graeme Bailey for HITC, Manchester United are now eyeing a move to sign Archie Brown from KAA Gent in what would see INEOS sign the left-back for a second time, having secured his signature at Swiss side Lausanne-Sport in 2021.

Their own Rodri: Man Utd want one of 'the best CMs in the world'

Manchester United looking for their very own Rodri

ByConnor Holden Jul 25, 2024

The 22-year-old came through Derby County's academy, before completing a free move to Lausanne and eventually discovering his best form in Belgium at Gent. Now, three years after leaving English football, Brown could get the biggest move of his career in the form of Manchester United.

"Complete" Brown can become Shaw heir

It's been quite the journey for Brown so far throughout his career. He started at Derby, before finding his feet in Switzerland and earning the interest of Premier League sides after thriving in Belgium. Now, his next stop could be Old Trafford in what would be a full circle moment back to English football for the first time in three years.

At 22 years of age, there are likely to be more stops along the way towards stardom too, but Manchester United may hope to have found their heir to Shaw's left-back role if they secure Brown's signature this summer.

The Derby academy graduate certainly has his fans in Belgium, with Gent's former head of scouting, Samuel Cardenas, telling the club's official website following Brown's arrival: "Archie is a player we followed last season in the Swiss 2nd division. He first played as a central defender and then quickly switched to the left-back position.

"For us, he is an option in both positions. Archie has all the qualities to succeed here: he is a complete player, fast, athletic, a solid defender and technically very strong with dynamism and attacking impulses."

Gill as opener, Pant as keeper – Gavaskar, Border give their views on India's XI

The former players, after whom the trophy is named, feel Prithvi Shaw is playing ‘too many’ shots at the start

Varun Shetty15-Dec-20203:21

Gavaskar: India could bring in KL Rahul for MCG Test in Kohli, Rohit’s absence

Shubman Gill has got both Sunil Gavaskar and Allan Border’s backing to open alongside Mayank Agarwal during India’s Test series against Australia. Previewing the series named after them, the first men to 10,000 Test runs discussed Gill’s and Prithvi Shaw’s prospects of sealing a place in the Indian line-up, with a consensus that Shaw’s aggressive style was currently going against him.”I think Shubman Gill should open with Mayank for the first Test match because he’s shown good form,” Gavaskar said. “Allan Border was there for the games [practice games], [and] was very impressed with what he saw from Shubman Gill. So I would imagine that he should open with Mayank Agarwal for the first Test.”Should Gill be picked, he would be making a Test debut and displacing Shaw, who was the incumbent opener alongside Mayank Agarwal in India’s last Test series in New Zealand. In the two warm-up games, Gill’s scores – 0, 29, 43, 65 – got progressively better while Shaw had a more patchy run with scores of 0, 19, 40, and 3. Shaw has had a torrid run of form coming into this tour including in IPL 2020, with his duck in the first practice game being his fourth in his last seven innings across formats.”I’ve been in Sydney the last couple of days, watching the Indian team against Australia A. Gee, I was impressed with Gill,” said Border. “I really think he’s got something about him, his technique. I know he’s young so he can play a few rash shots here and there, but he looks a seriously good player, this kid. He would be my pick out of the guys I saw.”I know you guys [rate] Shaw but it seems to me like he plays a shot-a-ball. Against the new ball, it looks good on flat tracks, but in Australia, you’ve got to be a little bit more watchful about your shot selection. He just seems a bit loose outside the off stump for me. If I’m the Indian selector, I’m looking very close at young Gill.”ALSO READ: Pick your India XI for first TestShaw has currently played in four Tests since his debut in October 2018, and averages 55.83. He has, however, appeared low on confidence since cricket resumed this year and Gavaskar suggested he needed to work on his defence.”I do agree with AB [Allan Border] on that,” Gavaskar said. “I think he’s got to spend a little more time assessing his batting. Because as an opening batsman, you’ve got to give yourself time to see what the pitch is doing, see what the bowlers are doing. And trying to bat the way he’s batting at the moment is not going to make him a consistent player. Yes, he’s going to make runs once in a while – [but] he’s got to tighten up his defence. I agree with AB that he plays far too many shots at the start of the innings.”As far as India’s other opener is concerned, Agarwal looks set to hold onto his spot, earned on the back of a strong debut during India’s successful last tour of Australia. Agarwal had a stellar IPL season earlier this year, and after a couple of unconverted starts in the ODI series, made a fifty in the last practice match.”My player to watch from India will be Agarwal, because he came to Australia for the last couple of Test matches two years ago and he actually showed the way,” Gavaskar said. “Because till then India had not got a start. But he batted brilliantly, he actually showed how to tackle Nathan Lyon because he was stepping down the pitch, hitting him straight. The freshness of youth, you could say.”Since then, he’s only become better. He’s gone from strength to strength. Look at the season he had last year, where he scored a double hundred against South Africa. He got back-to-back double hundreds if I’m not mistaken [two double-centuries in three matches]. So he’s the guy I really am looking forward to in this series.”On another much vaunted topic – the Indian wicketkeeper debate – Gavaskar said he expected India to pick Rishabh Pant over Wriddhiman Saha through this series. Pant has been India’s preferred option in overseas Tests, even when Saha has previously been available, and Gavaskar said that and a couple of other factors would work in his favour. Not least his blistering hundred against Australia A in the second practice game.”It’s going to be a tough one for the selection committee because Rishabh played in all the four Test matches during India’s [last] tour and he also got a hundred. And he seemed to have got under the skin of some of the Australian players with his chirping behind the stumps,” Gavaskar said. “So I guess the team would probably look to have him. And of course, when you’ve just come off a hundred, a few days earlier, you would be the choice I think.”The popular opinion on who the better wicketkeeper is has long been skewed in Saha’s direction, and the experienced wicketkeeper was brought straight back into the Indian team during when he returned from a long injury lay-off last year. That was, however, during India’s home season, where his skill against spinners is considered vastly superior. When India went to New Zealand, Pant was back in the team.”When you’re playing on pitches where the wicketkeeper has to stand up to the stumps, where the ball turns around a bit, that’s when you tend to take your best wicketkeeper – in which case, Wriddhiman Saha would be the obvious choice,” Gavaskar said. “But here, because India will be having pacers, you can stand behind. You get that much more time, about 15 yards behind the stumps. My feeling is they’ll go for that.”Also, because at the top of the order the Indians are a little bit shaky, they won’t know who to go with. […] So with the uncertainty, they’d like to strengthen their batting and I think Rishabh Pant will play. But I hope he plays at six because then that will allow you to pick five bowlers to get 20 wickets.”

Everton could sign Calvert-Lewin replacement who’s "ridiculously talented"

Despite excelling defensively under boss Sean Dyche during the 2023/24 Premier League campaign, Everton have struggled within the attacking third to produce quality on a regular basis.

Dominic Calvert-Lewin and Abdoulaye Doucoure both notched up seven goals in the league, but endured droughts throughout the campaign, with the latter failing to score for over four months – a period that saw the club pick up just one win in 15 outings.

The Toffees only managed a tally of 40 goals in their 38 Premier League matches, with only bottom club Sheffield United producing a total fewer than Dyche’s side.

Outgoings will undoubtedly be the focus this summer to boost their PSR standing, but the club should also target a forward, with the Toffees already eyeing up one player to improve the goalscoring situation at Goodison Park.

Everton interested in signing £20m talent this summer

According to reports in France, Everton have entered the race to sign Marseille forward Iliman Ndiaye this summer, in an attempt to improve their lack of goals in recent months.

The 24-year-old only joined the French side for £20m from Sheffield United last summer after their promotion back to the Premier League, but he could be set for a return to England just one year after leaving.

He scored three goals and registered three assists in Ligue 1 last season, a respectable return, but it may not be enough to secure his future at the club.

The journalist claims that Dyche’s side have already tabled an offer for the Senegalese forward, with the club potentially able to land their target who they’ve eyed for many years.

Ndiaye’s potential move could allow the club to move one forward on, following recent interest from fellow Premier League sides for his signature despite his poor recent form.

Why Ndiaye could allow Dyche to forget about Calvert-Lewin

The Englishman has been a great servant for the Toffees after signing for the Blues for £1.5m back in the summer of 2016, scoring 68 times in 247 appearances for the club.

However, given their recent troubles with PSR, they may be forced to offload him, with Newcastle United now looking likely to acquire his services.

Ndiaye would be a completely different option than the 27-year-old, but one that can take the Toffees to the next level, with his excellent ability with the ball at his feet.

Although the Everton man has contributed with more goals and assists in 2023/24, Ndiaye has dominated with his all-round play, adding a new dimension to the Toffees’ attack.

The youngster has performed much better with the ball at his feet, completing two times the amount of progressive passes to his teammates, whilst also achieving a 27% better pass completion rate.

He’s also completed nearly double the amount of successful take-ons than Calvert-Lewin, an example of the quality the “ridiculously talented” forward, as dubbed by the Second Tier Podcast, possesses in the final third.

Whilst Calvert-Lewin has been an excellent servant for the club, should they receive a bid in the region of their asking price, they must allow him to depart with Ndiaye potentially the perfect replacement.

He’s undoubtedly a different style of centre-forward to the Toffees’ number nine, but he would flourish with the current crop of attacking players at Goodison, allowing the club to pull clear of the drop zone next season.
