Clement must look at selling "great" Rangers talent in January

Glasgow Rangers are in a far better place during the current international break than they were during the previous one.

Philippe Clement has transformed the side from one which was struggling domestically, without a specific play style, into a team bursting with confidence that has won six of the previous seven matches in all competitions.

With the January transfer window fast approaching, the Belgian could see this as a perfect chance to improve his squad, while also moving on a few players in the process.

With several Light Blues players out of contract at the end of the season, the winter window is the final chance for the club to secure a transfer fee for them. Kemar Roofe is one of those players and Clement must ruthlessly ditch him in the coming weeks.

Kemar Roofe’s season in numbers

The 30-year-old has suffered yet more niggling injury issues this term, missing a few matches, and over the course of his Rangers career, he has almost missed more games (82) than he has played for the club (88) since arriving in 2020.

Dubbed a “great talent” by journalist Dean Jones, the 5 foot 10 forward has played ten matches this term, starting just six times and scoring one goal.

Glasgow Rangers striker Kemar Roofe.

While he may be one of the finest forwards at the Gers, his injury record proves his impact is severely limited.

He currently ranks in a lowly 15th position for shots on target per game (0.2) in the squad domestically, while also ranking 14th for big chances created (one) and 19th for successful dribbles per game (0.2), suggesting when he does play, his influence is hardly excellent.

Could this tempt Clement to move him on in January?

The decision Clement must take on Roofe

Despite playing just 88 times for the club, Roofe has still managed to find the back of the net on 37 occasions, and he has scored some big goals during his three-year spell at the Gers.

Who can forget the extra time winner against Braga in the Europa League quarter-final during the run to the final in 2021/22? Or his sublime goal from the halfway line against Standard Liege in monsoon conditions.

Roofe has always stepped up to the plate on big occasions, but it appears as though injury problems have finally caught up with him.

With just a few months left on his current contract, it's highly unlikely that Clement will be offering him an extended deal, and he could even try and secure a fee for him in January.

The striker is currently earning £26k-per-week and that is a lot for someone to not contribute on a regular basis.

When fit and healthy, Roofe is a wonderful addition to the starting XI as his intelligence and vision allow him to cause chaos for opposition defences along with scoring some wonderful goals.

This has been on show less and less, however, over the previous 18 months, and it is time for the Jamaican international to move on. It remains to be seen whether this will be in January or next summer.

Rangers team news: Clement can ease Cifuentes blow by unleashing "serious talent"

Glasgow Rangers return to the domestic scene today following the international break and it represents the first match in charge for new boss Philippe Clement.

Hibernian are the visitors to Ibrox and having secured a win in their last Premiership game before the break, the Gers will be hoping to continue this momentum.

Clement may need to change the side which started against St Mirren, however, especially as there are a few players who could return to action.

What is the Rangers team news vs Hibs?

Speaking to the media ahead of his first match in charge, Clement gave an overview of where the side is currently at in terms of injuries.

He said: “Todd Cantwell will be back. Ryan Jack will be back but not for the full 90.

“Danilo is adapting, it is his first moments training with a mask. We will likely need him for the weekend.

Former Monaco boss Philippe Clement.

“Lawrence and Matondo are injured and will miss out. Cantwell is increasing his workload following the injury so won't play the 90.

“Jose Cifuentes will also miss out at the weekend.”

It will certainly be a boost to see Cantwell and Jack return to action, while Danilo has impressed despite being limited with his game time under Beale – scoring two goals in five league outings – and he could make a big impact should he come on at some stage against the Easter Road side.

With Cifuentes missing however and Jack not able to play the full 90, will Clement place his trust in youth and give youngster Bailey Rice an unlikely spot in the starting XI?

Will Bailey Rice start vs Hibs?

The 17-year-old has already made three appearances in the senior side since joining from Motherwell in 2022 and his future looks exceptionally bright.

The teenage sensation has come off the bench against Aberdeen and St Mirren in recent weeks, and it’s clear he has the required attributes to challenge the established professionals in the first-team squad over the next couple of years.

Indeed, Rangers Review journalist Jonny McFarlane was impressed with the youngster following a youth tie against Celtic in April, describing him as a "serious talent".

These are the sort of traits that Clement will be looking for in his players and despite his tender age, Rice is performing far beyond his years.

Cifuentes hasn’t endured the best of starts at Ibrox, struggling to settle following his move for Los Angeles FC in the summer – making just four league appearances – and this injury could represent a solid chance for Rice to show the Belgian exactly what he is made of.

While scoring or creating chances is not a key strength, the youngster can instead focus on dictating the play with his solid passing ability and protecting the defence from any danger.

McFarlane even claimed he was “physically robust” during the match against Celtic and if he continues his development, he could be key for the Gers sooner rather than later.

Will Clement be brave enough to unleash him from the start? Only time will tell.

Arsenal must ditch Odegaard for "prolific" £40k-p/w gem this afternoon

Arsenal are back in action this afternoon, as the Gunners return to the Emirates to host bottom of the table Sheffield United in match day ten of the 2023/24 Premier League season.

Last time out in the league, Mikel Arteta’s side were far from being at their best, scraping a late draw at Stamford Bridge as the squad showed resilience to claim a point from Chelsea after being 2-0 down.

The Blades arrive without a win this campaign, giving the hosts the opportunity to restore their confidence unless Paul Heckingbottom’s side can produce a stellar performance in north London.

Arsenal team news vs Sheffield United

Arsenal have had their fair share of injury woes so far in the season, with a host of first-team players having to miss out on games over the past few weeks due to niggles.

From Bukayo Saka’s absence against Manchester City to Gabriel Martinelli’s time on the sidelines due to a hamstring issue, the Gunners have had to weather some injury storms, with the rain now returning to fall on two players.

In his pre-match press conference, Arteta confirmed that his squad will be without both Gabriel Jesus and Thomas Partey for the next few weeks, as they have been dealt their latest round of poor injury luck.

gabriel-jesus-arsenal-transfer-arteta-edu-monaco-folarin-balogun

Partey has already missed 30 days of the 2023/24 campaign to injury, while Jesus has been absent for 24 days, with Arsenal left to find solutions for the duo’s further upcoming absences.

Away from a headache over rotation to accommodate the latest wave of injuries, Arteta may opt to rotate due to a lower level of performance from some of his players, as club captain Martin Odegaard struggles to discover the form he showcased last season.

The stats to show that Mikel Arteta should drop Martin Odegaard

During the press conference, Arteta was quizzed about whether Odegaard needs a rest, as his dip in form has become more noticeable in recent weeks.

The manager responded in support of the Norwegian, suggesting that placing him in “better positions” will help him to “explore his qualities” once again, however, his sluggish performances of late could allow for competition to stem to increase form.

Arsenal midfielder Emile Smith-Rowe.

One player who could benefit from being introduced against Sheffield is Emile Smith Rowe, who has collected only three league appearances this season as he continues to battle for game time.

In the midst of Arsenal’s progression, it’s easy to forget just how good the Englishman was back in the 2021/22 campaign, where he netted ten goals in the league and prevailed as one of Arteta’s favoured creators.

By fielding the 23-year-old whiz against the struggling Blades, the Spaniard could not only give Smith-Rowe a chance to flourish once more, but hand himself further room to rotate in his squad, which would ultimately benefit the club.

Odegaard’s drop in performance level is most notable since Arsenal welcomed Spurs to the Emirates in the north London derby, where the skipper received a Sofascore match rating of 6.7.

Prior to the battle of north London, Odegaard hadn’t received a match rating lower than 7.2, and since that fixture in late September, he has only recorded two match ratings exceeding 7.0 in seven games, with the rest falling below par, via Sofascore.

Talk of dropping the 24-year-old skipper stems from his most recent performance, where against Sevilla he was absent, as highlighted by his statistics that night in the table above.

Once hailed as “prolific” by talent scout Jacek Kulig, Arteta could strike gold by unleashing Smith Rowe against Sheffield United, with the Gunners’ £40k-per-week asset capable of fighting for his place back in the squad, which is why Odegaard should be boldly ditched for him.

Zendejas responded to his exclusion from the USMNT's 23-man roster for the CONCACAF Nations League with the strike. It was his second goal of their CCC run in 2024 and marked an impressive fourth-straight game with a goal contribution. Across all competitions for Club America, he has five goals and four assists in 15 matches.

WHAT BERHALTER SAID

When selecting his list for the March camp, Berhalter dubbed it the "most difficult roster" he has ever put together. When speaking on Zendejas, who was one of the final names cut, he added: “He is doing well, he is collaborating offensively and defensively. It was a difficult list to make, it was not easy at all and there is not much difference. In the end, it could well have been. I told him that he has done everything in a good way, to continue and an opportunity would soon come.”

Leeds have a second highly-rated gem alongside Gray; he’s wanted by England

Leeds United have a bright young teen under Daniel Farke who is now wanted by two countries who are keen for him to pledge his international allegiance to them, according to reports.

What's the latest news involving Leeds United?

Last weekend, Leeds United lost their six-match unbeaten streak in the Sky Bet Championship owing to a 3-1 defeat away to Southampton on the South Coast, which has landed the Whites ninth in the league standings with 13 points from their opening nine fixtures.

Speaking on the Square Ball podcast, The Athletic journalist Phil Hay has backed three Leeds United players to find their way back into being selected for the Whites' home clash against Queens Park Rangers on Wednesday.

Hay stated: "You fully expect Ampadu to stay in the team, I suppose there is the question does Archie Gray come back in? Does Farke mix it up a little bit there? That aside, is this possibly a good night for Jaidon Anthony to make his debut? I think that could be justified, but I suspect all eyes will be on Rodon, does he come back into the centre of defence? I think the answer to that is surely yes."

In conversation with MOT Leeds News, former England goalkeeper Paul Robinson has backed German coach Farke to keep striker Joe Gelhardt around at Elland Road despite his lack of first-team minutes at the club, saying: "I don’t know the situation with him (Gelhardt) and the manager, but I suspect that the manager would be reluctant to let him go until he gets Bamford back fully firing and fully fit, but even then you can’t guarantee it."

Leeds United's Jeremiah Mullen has been called up for international duty with Scotland's Under-21 side and will be available for the young Tartan Army side for their upcoming double header against Hungary and Malta at Fir Park.

Who is Charlie Crew?

According to journalist Alan Nixon on Patreon, Leeds United youngster Charlie Crew is at the centre of a tug of war between Wales and England, with both nations said to be keen for the 17-year-old to nail his colours to the mast on the international stage.

Crew has already been involved at underage level for Wales all the way to the Under-21's and a senior call is believed to be in the offing sooner rather than later for the defensive midfielder, who has already trained with Rob Page's first-team squad. Nevertheless, the English Football Association have taken note of the fact that several of his family members are English, which would also qualify him to represent the Three Lions.

ethan-ampadu-injury-leeds-united-championship-preview-glen-kamara-farke

Speaking in an interview with BBC Radio Leeds during the first international break of the campaign, Leeds star Ethan Ampadu, who also plies his trade for Wales, spoke highly of Crew and his ability to fit in seamlessly in senior training, stating: "I have been there and it’s all about the development stage and getting used to playing around within a first team whether that’s here or at Leeds. Obviously I know him and just really excited to see him embrace it."

With Leeds United already offering a platform to youngster Archie Gray over recent months, Crew could be another exciting starlet to be cherry-picked from the conveyor belt of promising talent at Elland Road.

GOLAÇO DO DRAGÃO

SANTOS PERDE CHANCE NO FIM

Environment around Bangladesh team 'dirty' – Khaled Mahmud

Bangladesh technical director Khaled Mahmud has said he is no longer interested in working with the national team

Mohammad Isam12-Feb-2018Khaled Mahmud is no longer interested in the job of Bangladesh team’s technical director, saying the environment around the players has become “dirty”. He made these comments after the Bangladesh Cricket Board (BCB) said it was unlikely to find a head coach before the Nidahas Trophy in March. It is increasingly possible that the current coaching setup will go with the team to the T20 tournament in Sri Lanka considering the board has already rejected Richard Pybus and Phil Simmons’ applications for the head coach’s position.Mahmud said Bangladesh’s loss in the ODI tri-series final and the Test series has put him under pressure. He claimed he was being unfairly targeted, even though several previous Bangladesh coaches had begun their careers with defeats. Dav Whatmore, Jamie Siddons and Chandika Hathurusingha had all started their stints poorly.”Personally I am no longer interested to work with Bangladesh cricket,” Mahmud said. “I honestly feel it is becoming very dirty. I have always worked for the development of Bangladesh cricket. There is no self-interest involved [on my part]. But I am no longer interested.”The board will decide whether I should be going to the Nidahas Trophy. The fact that I am still around after our defeats is the biggest talking point. A lot of big coaches started off with bad results. Bangladesh’s performance may be because of our planning but there are more stories.”The only stories he elaborated upon were his gripe with the media and the talk about the Dhaka pitch. Mahmud questioned the Bangladesh players whom he said were not ready to battle on the spin-friendly track.”I don’t want to give any excuses whether it was a turning wicket or a bouncy track. If I am a player, I should play well in all types of wickets. There’s no point using the wickets as an excuse.”Wasn’t the wicket tough for Roshen Silva who was playing only his second Test match? He struggled, he fought. We didn’t fight. I didn’t see that someone struggled for a long time and then got out to a brilliant delivery. It becomes viral when people start talking about the wicket,” he said.Mahmud said that they had prepared well in advance to play on spin-friendly pitches, and reiterated that Sri Lanka’s lack of experience meant that they could have been easily countered in home conditions.”Everyone knew how the wicket would play at least 15-20 days ahead. We were unlucky in Chittagong where the wicket didn’t play as it should have. If we could play against Australia on a turning wicket, so is Sri Lanka God?”What do the Sri Lankans have that we can’t play against them? They only had Kusal Mendis and Dhananjaya de Silva. How many Tests have they played?”.
