Celtic could sell star for massive 833% profit amid Premier League interest

Celtic could be set to make a massive profit on one of their star men after it emerged that a Premier League side may come calling with a boatload of cash if they sell their own talisman.

Celtic enjoying excellent season start

Aside from being thrashed 7-1 by Borussia Dortmund, it has been an almost perfect start to the season for Brendan Rodgers and Celtic. The Bhoys have won nine of their opening ten Scottish Premiership games, with their one draw coming against Aberdeen, who sit level with Celtic on 28 points in the early season running.

In the Scottish League Cup, it was far less close, with Celtic thrashing Aberdeen 6-0 to progress at their expense, while they have also enjoyed success in the Champions League.

Though that thrashing cast doubt on their ability to compete on the European stage, they have followed it with a draw against Europa League holders Atalanta and most recently an impressive win over German outfit RB Leipzig to put themselves in a strong position to reach the next stage of the competition, with theoretically easier fixtures still to come.

Losing just once all season, Rodgers’ side appear likely to sweep the Scottish honours board after winning a double last season, and could even go one further to claim yet another treble, with no other side in Scotland as good as the Hoops on current form. That form has not gone unnoticed, and now one club south of the border could be set to pounce on their success.

Brentford eyeing Nicolas Kuhn

That comes as one report reveals that Brentford are considering a January move for Celtic winger Nicolas Kuhn, who impressed against Leipzig and grabbed two goals.

The Bees are braced to lose club top scorer Bryan Mbeumo amid interest from across top clubs in the Premier League, and they are set to demand in excess of £40m to let him leave the club despite him having just 18 months left to run on his contract.

Then, according to the Boot Room, they see Kuhn as a “potential replacement” for the 25-year-old, which would see them make a move in January if Mbeumo departed.

It is added that while Celtic weren’t planning to cash in on their forward just 12 months after he arrived at Celtic Park, “the chance to make a substantial profit may be hard to resist provided Brentford are willing to meet that £25 million asking price”.

Having paid just £3m to land him in 2023, a £25m sale would see them make a roughly 833% profit on their star man, while it would see Kuhn join Kieran Tierney as Celtic’s third biggest sale (a record that was broken by Matt O’Riley’s move to Brighton in the summer).

Under contract until 2029, Celtic are under no immediate pressure to part ways with Kuhn, but may find the allure of a mammoth fee too much to turn down.

Brighton in race to sign £5m "Barella regen" in January to partner Baleba

Brighton are now racing to sign a young star who has been dubbed Nicolo Barella 2.0 as they look to get a deal done before January, according to a fresh report.

Brighton keeping pace at the top

Fabian Hurzeler’s arrival at the AMEX Stadium in the wake of Roberto De Zerbi’s departure last season raised more than a few eyebrows, but the 31-year-old has made a strong start to his career in the Premier League.

Backed by heavy investment bettered only by Chelsea across the top flight over the summer, the Seagulls have lost just once so far this season and currently sit sixth in the Premier League, just two points behind fourth placed Aston Villa.

They could have been higher if it hadn’t been for a late collapse against Wolves, which saw them throw away a 2-0 lead to draw 2-2 in stoppage time courtesy of a goal from Matheus Cunha to rescue a point for Gary O’Neil’s side.

And Hurzeler didn’t hold back after the game, accusing his side of a lack of maturity and professionalism.

“We lost two points and we failed today in our development. We were not mature enough, not professional enough to win this game. We have to learn quick from this”, he told reporters after the game.

“We were not ruthless enough in defending set pieces, we had a big chance to go for the third goal, we missed this and then get punished. We were not acting professionally and we have to learn from this. That is very important.”

However, Brighton’s recent model has always been to buy younger players and develop them into such top professionals before selling for a profit, and it is one that they are not planning to change any time soon.

Brighton in urgent race to sign Italian midfielder

Now, it has emerged that the Seagulls are in a race with several other clubs from Europe to sign Empoli’s Jacopo Fazzini this January.

The midfielder, who doesn’t turn 22 until March, has impressed in his short career to date and has drawn glowing praise. Football Analyst Ben Mattinson dubbed him a [Nico] “Barella Regen” on X, adding that “he’s a really exciting prospect who will surely develop into a top midfielder for Italy and whichever team he ends up at”.

And Brighton are trying to ensure that team is them, with reports in France [via Sport Witness] claiming that both OGC Nice and the Seagulls are hot on the tail of the midfielder, whose future, they claim, could be “decided in the coming weeks” ahead of a potential move in January.

He’s out on loan: Aston Villa ace has a “higher ceiling” than Douglas Luiz

Aston Villa will surely be feeling the after-effects of a congested fixture list right about now, as Unai Emery’s men prepare for an EFL Cup tie with Crystal Palace this mid-week, away from their duties in the Premier League and Champions League.

The much-maligned competition won’t be their main priority, with Villa eyeing up another top-four finish in the top-flight alongside keeping their 100% record going on Europe’s biggest stage for as long as possible, over beating Oliver Glasner’s Eagles tomorrow night.

The Champions League will also see Villa face off against one of their former stars in Douglas Luiz when his new employers Juventus come to town right at the end of November, with the Brazilian finding life in Turin to be tricky after loving his playing days in England.

Douglas Luiz's time at Villa

Luiz was a firm fan’s favourite when on the books of Emery’s men, with his departure earlier this year hurting the Premier League club in the short term.

Villa have since licked their wounds and recovered, with Amadou Onana and Youri Tielemans forming a promising partnership in the holding midfield positions in the absence of the South American, but Luiz was still a big hit with the Villa Park faithful all the same.

Luiz would notch up 204 appearances for the West Midlands club before he would up and leave for pastures new in Juventus, amassing 22 goals and 24 assists along the way as a midfield option who could roll his sleeves up and play dirty, whilst also popping up with crucial contributions going forward.

It has been a bumpy ride for the 26-year-old since his arrival to Serie A, however, with no goals or assists coming his way from nine appearances to date, as Juve boss Thiago Motta has also only given Luiz one full 90-minute run-out.

Villa will feel vindicated in selling on their star man for £42m now, away from any initial heartbreak the move caused, with one player out on loan away from Villa Park currently on course to be even better than Luiz if given a chance on his return to England.

The player with a higher ceiling than Douglas Luiz

According to football analyst Ben Mattinson, Enzo Barrenechea – who is out on loan at Valencia for the season away from Emery’s group – has a potentially “higher ceiling” than Luiz, which is high praise considering how key the Brazilian was to many Villa teams when he was still at the club.

Barrenechea will hope he can live up to this bold praise down the line, with the Argentinian midfielder impressing those at Valencia already with some top performances away from any outside hype, which included him netting his team’s opener last time out in La Liga action versus Getafe.

The brand new Valencia number five shone in that contest away from just poking home this goal, however, with six duels successfully won as a battling midfield presence.

Away from this current loan stint in Spain, Barrenechea has also proven himself in Italy – whilst Luiz currently falters in this location – hence Villa’s reasoning to splash out £6.7m to land the South American gem this summer from Juve, while Luiz headed in the opposite direction in a separate deal.

Looking at his numbers above when playing for Frosinone last campaign in Serie A, it’s clear that Barrenechea could go on to be a top talent for Emery’s side in the years to come, averaging an impressive 6.4 ball recoveries per game last season in league action.

To add context, Luiz playing for Motta’s men now is averaging a far lesser 2.0.

Emery will be keeping a close eye on the 23-year-old’s development in his native country, therefore, in the hope he can develop into a first-team star for his side, offering them a new Luiz in the process.

Mason Greenwood set goal target by Roberto De Zerbi as Marseille team-mate calls ex-Man Utd star 'one of the best players in Ligue 1'

Marseille boss Roberto De Zerbi has set Mason Greenwood a goal target, while one of his team-mates says the forward is one of Ligue 1's best players.

Greenwood swapped Manchester United for Marseille last summer and so far he has proven to be an excellent signing for the French side. Now, manager De Zerbi believes the 23-year-old can score at least 20 goals this season and team-mate Geronimo Rulli believes the one-time England international is among the best players in Ligue 1.

AdvertisementAFPWHAT HAS BEEN SAID

De Zerbi told reporters: "He's strong. We're the team after PSG that generates the most chances in the box. Can he end up top scorer? There's also [Bradley] Barcola, [Lille's Jonathan] David, [Ousmane] Dembele… But he has the potential to score 20-25 goals."

And keeper Rulli, who played in the Villarreal side that beat United on penalties in the Europa League final in 2021, added: "I beat him [Greenwood] in the Europa League final. He's the best player or one of the best players in Ligue 1. When you see how he works, how he is in front of goal… We're relaxed with him, it's important to have this type of player, we take advantage of it. I'd like to see him finish as the league's top scorer. He impresses me especially in the box, he doesn't miss the goal. We're really happy to have him with us."

THE BIGGER PICTURE

Greenwood has reignited his career at Marseille, scoring 13 goals and providing four assists in just 20 games. If he continues on his current trajectory, he could potentially become Ligue 1's hottest property.

Imagine him & Nkunku: Chelsea lining up bid to sign £67m Jackson upgrade

Chelsea centre-forward Nicolas Jackson has enjoyed a strong start to the season in the Premier League under new head coach Enzo Maresca.

The Senegal international has racked up four goals and three assists in six appearances in the division so far this term, after a return of 14 goals in 35 outings in the 2023/24 campaign.

However, his 18 goals in the Premier League since the start of last season have come from xG of 23.3, which suggests that the striker has not made the most of his opportunities in front of goal.

That may be why Chelsea are reportedly still in the market to add another number nine to their squad in the upcoming January transfer window…

Chelsea's interest in Bundesliga star

According to Calcio Mercato, the Blues are one of a number of teams lining up a bid to sign RB Leipzig centre-forward Benjamin Sesko after the turn of the year.

The report claims that Chelsea, Arsenal, and Liverpool are all prepared to splash the cash to sign the Bundesliga star to bolster their respective attacking options.

It states that the current feeling is that a fee of around €80m (£67m) will be needed to secure his services, whether that is in January or next summer.

Benjamin Sesko scores for Slovenia

Calcio Mercato adds that AC Milan have also been tracking the Slovenia international in recent years but that his price tag is unlikely to be affordable to any teams in Italy, which could give Chelsea a boost in their pursuit of the marksman.

Maresca could now land an upgrade on Jackson, and an excellent partner for Christopher Nkunku by securing a deal to sign Sesko in January.

Why Chelsea should sign Sesko

Firstly, the Slovenian star stands at 6 foot 5 and provides an imposing presence at the top end of the pitch, which could complement Nkunku – who stands at 5 foot 10 – well.

Sesko has won 67% of his aerial duels in the Bundesliga this season and could offer physicality in the number nine role that would then allow a smaller player, like the Frenchman, to shine in possession without having to worry about his lack of strength in those duels.

Alongside his physical attributes, Sesko is also a terrific finisher who could come in and offer more than Jackson as a goalscorer for Chelsea, based on their respective performances over the last 14 months or so.

As you can see in the table above, the 21-year-old star has outperformed his xG by just over seven goals since the start of the 2023/24 campaign.

Whereas, Jackson has underperformed his xG by just over five and this suggests that Sesko is far more clinical in front of goal, and more likely to make the most of the chances that Chelsea create.

Sesko, who was described as a “monster” by U23 scout Antonio Mango, could then create an exciting partnership with Nkunku, who has scored seven goals in ten games in all competitions this season.

49ers plot late move for Rutter replacement who embarrassed Leeds in 23/24

Into the final days of the summer transfer window, Leeds United are now reportedly planning a move to sign a replacement for Georginio Rutter in a last-gasp deal.

Leeds transfer news

It's been a busy week for those at Elland Road. Before securing their first victory of the season, defeating Sheffield Wednesday 2-0, the Whites secured the signing of Largie Ramazani. Replacing Crysencio Summerville, who swapped Leeds for West Ham United earlier this summer, Ramazani sealed a deal worth a reported €11.7m (£10m) from UD Almeria.

Speaking to the club's official website after putting pen to paper, the winger said: “Finally I'm here, I'm excited and I can't wait to get started. You know how big the club is and it was an easy decision for me and I just decided, you know what, this is a no-brainer. I'm very excited to come back to England, especially to a big club like this.”

“The fans and the club, I know how big it is. It's an emotional team, very passionate and that's something I love. I bring a little bit of that different flair and different type of skills. I think I can excite the fans and bring something different to the team. I think the objective is very clear and I’m just excited.”

The Whites are finally set to land an attacking reinforcement.

ByTom Cunningham Aug 24, 2024

After replacing Ramazani, the 49ers Enterprises have instantly turned their attention to replacing Rutter. According to Football Insider, the 49ers and Leeds are planning a late move to sign Ilias Chair from Queens Park Rangers.

The attacking midfielder has just one year left on his current contract at Loftus Road and could, therefore, possibly leave at a cut price this summer in a boost for those at Elland Road.

"Terrific" Chair has Championship know-how

A player with over 200 appearances to his name in the Championship, Chair certainly knows what it takes to compete in England's second tier and could finally take a step towards the Premier League by completing a move to Leeds this summer. Of course, those in Yorkshire know all about his quality, given that he scored once and assisted twice in a stunning 4-0 victory for QPR over Leeds last season, embarrassing the Whites in the run-in.

QPR boss Marti Cifuentes may not be keen to show the door to his midfielder, however, having been full of praise for Chair last season, saying via West London Sport: “He wasn’t happy he hadn’t started the game of course, but that’s what I want. I want players here who are disappointed to be on the bench. He has got really strong attributes and was terrific. I felt confident at half-time that he would contribute.”

Man Utd boost as "monster" and £150k-p/w star now set to return from injury

Manchester United manager Erik ten Hag has received a boost as two players should be ready to return against Southampton after the international break, according to a new report.

It has been a poor start to the Premier League season for the Red Devils, as they have suffered two defeats in their opening three league games. That has resulted in pressure already mounting on ten Hag, who will know a victory is needed against the Saints.

United were one of the busiest sides in the league in terms of transfers during the summer, as they brought five new players to the club and allowed 13 to leave. This is a clear indication that the club’s new board was willing to back their manager, as they look to improve on last season.

The transfer window only closed on Friday evening, and Man United are already eyeing up two new additions in the form of a left-back and a midfielder. It has been claimed that the Red Devils have sent scouts to watch Juventus defender Juan Cabal as they eye a replacement for the injured Luke Shaw.

The full-back has only just joined the Italian side, but his early season performances have put him on the radar of United, with Juventus said to be looking for around €30 million, which is roughly £25 million.

As well as eyeing a deal for Cabal, Man United are also looking into a deal for Franco Mastantuono. The 17-year-old plays for River Plate and is said to have caught the attention of the Premier League side, who have moved ahead of Real Madrid and Barcelona in the race. The midfielder is said to be valued at around £35 million, which has put the two Spanish giants off making a move.

While United may have their eye on a couple of transfers for the new year, ten Hag will have all focus on the club’s next game against Southampton, and the Dutchman has just received a big injury boost.

Man United receive double injury boost ahead of Southampton

According to the Manchester Evening News, Manchester United are hopeful that they can welcome back striker Rasmus Hojlund and defender Luke Shaw to their squad for the Southampton game.

Hojlund, who was once described as being a “monster” by Reading FC manager Ruben Selles, has missed the start of the season for United after suffering an hamstring injury in the pre-season game against Arsenal. The Red Devils are said to be hopeful of having the forward back in the squad for a week on Saturday, as the striker looks to improve on his tally from last season.

Meanwhile, as well as hopefully seeing Hojlund back playing, ten Hag may also be able to welcome Shaw back to the fold, as he’s been out injured with a calf injury suffered in pre-season.

United did state in their statement when Shaw was injured that they would hope to have him fit after the international break, and that is expected be the case. The defender has been at Old Trafford for some years now, and the £150,000-p/w England international will want to be available for the rest of the campaign with the club seemingly shopping around for more reliable options.

West Ham and Steidten make offer to sign 35 y/o free agent after Rodriguez

West Ham United have made an offer to another free agent alongside Guido Rodriguez, according to a new report.

West Ham’s summer signings so far

The Hammers and technical director Tim Steidten have been busy so far this summer in the transfer market, bringing in a number of new players ahead of Julen Lopetegui’s first season in charge.

Brazilian winger Luis Guilherme was the first signing of the Lopetegui era, arriving from Palmeiras. He was then joined by experienced goalkeeper Wes Foderingham, who left Sheffield United upon his contract expiry.

Max Kilman then put pen to paper at the London Stadium to reunite with Lopetegui following their time at Wolves, and the centre-back remains the club’s most expensive addition of the window. Crysencio Summerville and Niclas Fullkrug became the club’s fourth and fifth signings, joining from Leeds United and Borussia Dortmund respectively.

Rodriguez will join the quintet in London for the upcoming Premier League season, arriving on a free transfer after leaving Real Betis in the summer. After the Argentine, though, another free agent appears to be of interest to the Irons.

West Ham have made offer to Mats Hummels

According to Hammers News, West Ham have made an offer to free agent Mats Hummels after he left Borussia Dortmund earlier in the summer, with the player set to make a decision on his future this week.

A top agent source close to the West Ham board told Hammers News: “A contract offer was made and it has been made clear it remains on the table. He will be making a decision at some point this week.”

Since then, Sky Sports reporter Florian Plettenberg has said that West Ham's top flight rivals Brighton are also keen on the 35-year-old centre-back.

Hummels and Fullkrug helped Borussia Dortmund to the Champions League final last season, and who knows, the pair could be turning out alongside each other again fairly soon.

Should West Ham win the race to secure Hummels’ services, then they would be getting a defender with plenty of experience at the highest level.
