Rangers star who "makes things happen" must replace Tom Lawrence

Glasgow Rangers have the chance to bounce back to winning ways this evening as they travel away to face off against Dundee in the Scottish Premiership.

The Light Blues were supposed to play them before the recent international break but the match was postponed shortly before kick-off due to a waterlogged pitch.

Three points for the Gers will send them back to the top of the league, as they only one point behind rivals Celtic, and that should be the aim for Philippe Clement's side.

Rangers come into this match off the back of a 3-3 draw in the Old Firm clash with the Hoops on Sunday, a game in which they battled back from 2-0 and 3-2 down to secure a point.

Goals from James Tavernier, Abdallah Sima, and Rabbi Matondo ensured that the Gers avoided defeat and provided themselves with a chance to return to the top of the Premiership tonight.

It was far from a perfect performance from the Light Blues, given that they conceded three goals at home, and Clement could look to make some changes from the starting XI that lined up on Sunday.

One alteration the Belgian head coach should make is to brutally ditch attacking midfielder Tom Lawrence from the lineup to bring Todd Cantwell back into the team.

Tom Lawrence's performance against Celtic

The former Derby County wizard was selected to start as the number ten behind Cyriel Dessers, with John Lundstram and Mohammed Diomande behind him in midfield, in the big clash with Celtic at Ibrox.

Unfortunately, the Wales international failed to step up to the mark as he produced a disappointing performance before being taken off with the score at 2-1 to the Hoops.

As you can see in the table above, Lawrence has usually been a creative presence in midfield for Rangers with his quality and reliability in possession of the ball.

However, that was not the case on Sunday as the 30-year-old midfielder only completed 58% of his attempted passes and did not contribute with a single key pass or shot on target.

The Gers dynamo, who lost possession 13 times, was also tackled in both of his attempted dribbles and had a 0% long pass success rate in his 69 minutes on the pitch.

Glasgow Rangers forward Tom Lawrence.

These statistics show that Lawrence, who also committed a foul that caused Dessers' goal to be ruled out, did not make a positive impact on the game in possession, with his wasteful play on the ball.

This is why Clement must now drop the experienced maestro to the bench for this clash with Dundee, as Cantwell could be a better option than him in the number ten role tonight.

Todd Cantwell's bright Old Firm cameo

The former Norwich City star was brought on with 21 minutes left to go and the score at 2-1 to Celtic and caught the eye with an energetic cameo.

He created one chance in those 21 minutes, whilst Lawrence made zero key passes in 69 minutes, and was heavily involved in the build-up to the equaliser from Matondo in stoppage time.

The English magician held onto the ball well under pressure and released it to Lundstram on the edge of the box, who then had a simple pass to set up Matondo for the sensational curling effort into the far corner.

Rangers midfielder Todd Cantwell.

Cantwell buzzed about the pitch to get on the ball and make an impact, with 25 touches and nine passes completed in 21 minutes. Whereas, Lawrence only had 36 touches and completed 11 passes in more than three times as much time on the field.

His energy helped to get Rangers back into the match, by getting the Gers up the pitch and into the Hoops third, and then played a big role in the third goal.

The 26-year-old star has also showcased his ability to directly impact matches with goals and assists since his move from the Canaries at the start of last year, which is another reason why Clement should unleash him against Dundee.

Todd Cantwell's Premiership record

During the second half of last season, Cantwell hit the ground running in Glasgow with a fantastic return of six goals and four assists in 16 Premiership matches for Michael Beale.

The right-footed talent, who also created five 'big chances' and made 1.3 key passes per game, was directly involved in more than one goal every other game on average.

This season, the English wizard has once again provided quality as both a scorer and a creator of goals for the Gers at the top end of the pitch, having been deployed out wide and through the middle as an attacking midfielder at times.

As you can see in the table above, Cantwell has outperformed Lawrence in the Premiership this season with his reliability on the ball, his creativity, and his goal threat in the final third.

This is why Clement must brutally ditch the Welshman to unleash the former Premier League ace, who journalist Josh Bunting once claimed "makes things happen", against Dundee tonight, particularly when you consider how vulnerable their defence is.

Only Livingston (55) have conceded more goals than Dundee (54) in the Premiership, which suggests that there will be chances for the Gers to secure a convincing win as they do not have a tight backline.

Todd Cantwell

Therefore, Rangers need players who can make the most of that leaky defence, and Cantwell's statistics so far this season suggest that he is the right man for the job as he has showcased his quality as a goalscorer over the last 18 months.

Lawrence, who has only scored one league goal for the Gers this term, does not provide enough of a goal threat to be considered a lethal threat in the final third, which is why he should be dropped to make way for the ex-Canary whiz tonight.

Offspinner Chris Green has been suspended from bowling due to an illegal action, Cricket Australia announced on Wednesday.Green was withdrawn from the Sydney Thunder squad for their Big Bash League match against the Melbourne Stars, scheduled for later in the day. Thunder are fourth on the points table, while the Stars are at the top.He was reported by umpires Nathan Johnstone, Mike Graham-Smith and third umpire Paul Wilson, after the match between the Thunder and Stars at the Sydney Showground Stadium on January 2.Green will be unable to for a minimum of 90 days in CA-run competitions, effective immediately. After the 90-day suspension has elapsed, Green will be eligible to undergo testing once again with a view to returning to bowling. He will be permitted to play as a batsman should the Thunder or Cricket NSW desire and can also play premier cricket (including bowl) under the supervision and with the consent of Cricket NSW during his suspension. So far, Green had played in each of the Thunder’s seven matches in BBL 2019-20, and had the second best economy rate among Thunder’s bowlers, with 7.55. He picked up only three wickets, but his miserly economy rate has been among his chief strengths. In December, he had the best economy rate of any bowler in T20 cricket in the past year, giving up runs at just 6.57 per over.Green had been picked up by Kolkata Knight Riders at his base price of INR 20 lakh in the IPL auction on December 19, and in November last year, he had signed the longest deal in BBL history, with Thunder snapping him up for six seasons.Once he was reported, Green underwent testing at the National Cricket Centre in Brisbane on January 5 under the guidance of Dr Luke Kelly. Results from the test were made available to Cricket Australia on Wednesday, which showed Green to have an illegal bowling action.Peter Roach, CA’s head of cricket operations, praised the bowler and the franchise for their cooperation in the matter, and how they had handled it.”We’d like to commend Chris and the Thunder for the way they have approached this process with complete cooperation and respect,” he said. “Chris undertook testing at the earliest possible time and satisfactorily replicated his bowling action in the controlled environment. We look forward to working with Chris in the coming months and conducting further testing once the suspension period has elapsed.””Gutted I couldn’t be out there with my Thunder team-mates tonight,” Green tweeted. “Whilst the news surrounding my action is disappointing, I respect the process and the results of the test. Perspective is a powerful thing with what is currently happening in our country.”Through the help of my coaches, I will be doing everything I can to get back to doing what I love with ball in hand. I would like to thank everyone for their messages, I am very fortunate to have the best people and fans around to support me. Work starts tomorrow.”

The disrespect! Aston Villa's Jhon Duran throws up 'Irons' sign on Instagram live as West Ham step up pursuit of £40m-rated striker

Aston Villa's Jhon Duran has risked the wrath of the Villan's faithful after crossing his arms in the West Ham symbol for 'the Irons'.

Duran has been linked with a switch from the Midlands to east London and, with this video, appears determined to join West Ham. The Colombian striker had been linked with Chelsea earlier in the window, but now appears set on a move to their London rivals. The Hammers recently had a bid of £32 million ($41m), as well as Lewis Orford heading the other way and a sell-on clause, turned down. They are not giving up yet though.

Duran shone for Villa in moments last season and caught the eye with his powerful ball striking and physical presence. Still only 20, he was signed by Villa just two seasons ago but has struggled for minutes with Ollie Watkins in the form of his life. Meanwhile, West Ham have been searching for a reliable goal-scorer for a number of seasons and new boss Julien Lopetegui has identified Duran as a potential answer.

DID YOU KNOW?

Duran won Aston Villa's goal of the season award last campaign for his strike against Crystal Palace. The hitman took a cross down on his chest before lashing a half-volley past Sam Johnstone in the Eagles' net. The goal marked the pick of the bunch in his total of five goals for the Villans in the Premier League.

After this bit of disrespect Duran showed to the club, it is likely he will be granted his move to West Ham. Villa will be quick to move on, however, and having already been busy in the transfer market, will look to move again. They have been linked with Atletico Madrid's castaway forward Joao Felix.

Injury cloud over Rashid Khan as Bangladesh look to correct poor finals record at home

There’s a threat of rain in Dhaka, and that could force the teams to revisit their plans for the title clash

The Preview by Mohammad Isam23-Sep-2019Big PictureBangladesh v Afghanistan could well become a more regular fixture in the game in the future than it is now. They don’t have a lot of encounters coming up in the next 12 months, but in the long-term, they could well meet more frequently, on the big stage, given how they have developed as teams – and have a rivalry going too – in the past few years. The two sides have gone for youth over experience in this tri-series, but with mixed results. It’s experience that has made the difference for Afghanistan, though, as Mohammad Nabi, Rashid Khan and Mujeeb Ur Rahman have all played pivotal roles in Afghanistan’s two wins. The bad news for Afghanistan is that Rashid, who hasn’t fully recovered from the hamstring injury he picked up in the last match, is uncertain for the final. The day before the game, Rashid conceded that the physio has a lot of work to do with him, and as things stand, he is not more than a 50% chance. But Bangladesh have no reason to let their guard down in case Rashid doesn’t make it. Among the youngsters, the likes of Hazratullah Zazai, Rahmanullah Gurbaz and Fareed Ahmad are solid players, with the ability to swing things Afghanistan’s way. While Zazai is a relatively known entity, Gurbaz’s stroke play has been a revelation, and Fareed has shown plenty of promise with the new ball. For the home side, Shakib Al Hasan has had a stellar tournament, while Mahmudullah is the team’s leading run-scorer and Mohammad Saifuddin their top wicket-taker. Afif Hossain, among the newbies, has won a match single handedly, but someone like Najmul Hossain hasn’t done much in the tournament so far.The home side can bank on their experience of playing at the Shere Bangla National Stadium, although it hasn’t been a happy venue for them in multi-team tournaments, as they have lost all their finals here to date. Fans are expected to flock to the stadium despite it being the middle of the week – and there’s a forecast for rain – which could add to the pressure of having not won a final at the venue. For Afghanistan, who were until recently on a record 12-match winning streak, successive defeats leading into the final would have had a chastening effect, but they would want to quickly pick themselves up, and what better occasion to do it than this?Form guideBangladesh: WWLWL (Last five completed matches, most recent first)
Afghanistan: LLWWWIn the spotlightBangladesh’s poor showings in T20Is has made the selectors turn to Shafiul Islam once again, who has played just 14 games in the format in more than nine years. If Shafiul and the rest of the bowling attack can keep the Afghanistan batsmen quiet, Bangladesh have a good chance. Arsenal now eyeing move to sign "great" 22 y/o who could replace Ramsdale

Despite helping Arsenal return to the Premier League's top four last season and compete for the title against Manchester City, Aaron Ramsdale found himself dropped from Mikel Arteta's starting spot in the current campaign, casting doubts over his future. And with those doubts in mind, the Gunners are reportedly eyeing a potential replacement.

Arsenal transfer news

Since Arteta chose new signing David Raya over Ramsdale, the former Bournemouth and Sheffield United shot-stopper has been forced to settle for a place on the bench at The Emirates, in what could eventually come at a cost with the Euros coming up this summer.

£60m defender ready to seriously consider move to Arsenal

He’s a man in demand.

ByEmilio Galantini Feb 24, 2024

Ramsdale spoke about losing his place back in October, saying:

“Because it’s one of the first times it’s happened with the situation, it has been difficult. There are times where you’re doing the right thing but it’s the wrong thing and if you don’t do it, it’s the wrong thing. So it’s a double-edged sword.

“There’s a lot … a lot of attention. It’s a position where it’s famously said if you’re not spoken about, it means you’ve done a good job. There’s a lot of talk at the minute. Whether it is me or David who plays we need to be able to just focus and play but at the same time, it’s a strange, big headline."

Now, Ramsdale is reportedly unhappy and those in North London are already thinking about replacements should the goalkeeper leave. According to Steve Kay of Football Transfers, Arsenal are now eyeing a move to sign Diant Ramaj from Ajax, with the goalkeeper's asking price seemingly sitting at just €15m (£13m).

Diant Ramaj for Ajax.

Kay said: "Arsenal also liked him when he was at Eintracht Frankfurt. He's good on the ball which is something Mikel Arteta certainly wants. He's also excellent at long balls to the attackers and could be the perfect back-up at Arsenal.

"Ramaj's also a great shot-stopper. He's brave in coming out for crosses etc. The only question mark, if anything, is his handling. As for his value, I'm told he wouldn't cost a lot. A fee of €15m has been mentioned to me."

"Great" Ramaj has outperformed Ramsdale

Whilst Ramaj may be a relatively unknown name to some, the Ajax goalkeeper has managed to outperform Ramsdale in certain areas this season, perhaps ending any panic that Arsenal could suffer a drop-off in quality if the England international decides to depart this summer.

What's more, Ramaj is still just 22 years old, handing him plenty of chance to get even better. For a reported £13m too, Arsenal could get themselves a summer bargain if Ramsdale does decide to depart.

When the summer transfer window arrives, it looks as though Arsenal's goalkeeper plan could centre around Ramsdale's decision. Without him, the Gunners could be left with no choice but to turn to the market and potentially Ramaj, who has impressed at Ajax this season.

– As mudanças vão acontecer, sim.

Mancini ainda elogiou a atuação do time pernambucano.
