European club thinking of making a move for "excellent" £4m Rangers striker

With the transfer window now in full swing, it appears that some of Rangers' most valuable talents could be on their way out of Ibrox this summer.

Rangers braced for numerous stars to exit this summer

The most recent news out of Ibrox has concerned the future of some of Rangers' biggest names. The future of current club captain James Tavernier has occupied many of the headlines in Glasgow, with the full-back offered an astronomical deal to leave Ibrox and reunite with former boss Steven Gerrard at Saudi Pro League side Al-Ettifaq.

Who is Philippe Clement eyeing up in the transfer window ahead of his first full season at Ibrox?

Centre-back Connor Goldson was also thought to be joining Tavernier in Saudi Arabia, though recent links to Birmingham City could see him swap the Champions League for League One next season. Goldson grew up in nearby Wolverhampton and could be tempted by a move back to the Midlands during the transfer window.

To make matters worse for Philippe Clement, Rangers have been dealt a significant blow in terms of their incomings, with a deal to sign Norwich City's Kenny McLean falling through after the parties failed to agree on personal terms.

With much of the Ibrox faithful hopeful that their club would use this summer to bolster their squad, the Scottish Premiership runners-up look to have been dealt a further blow as a European club consider a move for a Rangers striker.

Italian club discuss a deal to sign Dessers

As first reported by Sport Witness, the Italian press are claiming that Cagliari are thinking about Rangers striker Cyriel Dessers to improve their squad next season. The Ibrox outfit reportedly value the striker at €5m (£4m) and the Nigeria international's current deal is set to keep him at the club until 2027.

Dessers was a vital part of Clement's team last season, scoring 16 goals in the league as Rangers fell agonisingly short of the Scottish Premiership title. This tally saw Dessers finish as the club's second-highest scorer, just behind penalty-taker Tavernier.

The 29-year-old only joined Rangers last season in a move from Italian outfit US Cremonese. Since then, Dessers has gone on to establish himself as a regular fixture in the Gers' starting XI.

The striker has also been a player who has stepped up in big moments for Rangers, with former boss Michael Beale waxing lyrical about Dessers after the UEFA Champions League play-off first leg against PSV back in August 2023:

"It is a new team, and we have got new players. I thought Cyriel Dessers was excellent. He backed into the centre-halves, but he got us up the pitch. At times I would like people to get closer to him."

Whilst the fee received for Dessers will go some way towards funding new recruits, it is likely that Clement will struggle to find a player that can match the Nigerian's output for his side.

'We are not happy!' – Man Utd chief admits owners are angered by start to new season as pressure mounts on Erik ten Hag

Manchester United's chief communications officer Toby Craig has admitted that the owners are unhappy with the team's poor start to the new season.

There has been much speculation over manager Erik ten Hag’s future after United got off to their worst start in Premier League history in the 2024-25 campaign. Until last Saturday’s 2-1 home victory over Brentford, the Red Devils were 14th in the league and had done five games without a win across all competitions.

The INEOS group, headed by Sir Jim Ratcliffe, and the Glazer family held a board meeting during the international break to discuss the future of the Dutch coach. While the meeting did not yield any major decisions, Red Devils’ chief communications officer Tony Craig has revealed that the owners are not particularly pleased with the team’s poor start to the season.

WHAT HAS BEEN SAID

Speaking at a fan forum, Craig said: "Clearly we are not happy with the men's first team's start to the season and results are not where we want them to be. There is a huge amount of change going on. We believe we came out of the summer transfer window with a stronger squad, but it's one that is still evolving with a number of younger players who will keep getting better.

"So there have been changes on the pitch, but also off the pitch with Dan Ashworth and Jason Wilcox joining the club. They are transforming our sporting structure off the pitch. We know there's still a lot to do. The women's first team has started its season well, with a 100 per cent record so far in the WSL. Whilst the main focus of the fans' forum has always been on fan issues, we will endeavour to keep the forum briefed on football developments and provide access to football leadership from time to time."

Birmingham interview Rosenior alternative who’d be perfect for Pritchard

Birmingham City's revolving door of managers is very much an interesting topic of conversation among avid fans of EFL football, having gone through four bosses this season just gone.

Tony Mowbray's recent exit from St. Andrew's wasn't a rash axing or poor decision-making blowing up in Birmingham's face again, however, with the experienced 60-year-old stepping down from the managerial limelight due to health issues that had seen Gary Rowett take on the job post temporarily.

Sunderland's former manager Tony Mowbray.

Birmingham won't want to be constantly beaten down by this tag of being a scattergun club when it comes to who occupies the dug-out though, hoping that their next appointment will be the settled face they desire and crave to instantly return back up to the Championship.

Birmingham frontrunner now interviewed

Football Insider have revealed that the relegated Blues have now interviewed former Stoke City boss Alex Neil for the vacancy, with the out-of-work 42-year-old in 'pole position' to land the gig.

Neil's promotion record as a manager would have made him the frontrunner prior to an interview occurring anyway, having been the boss that finally got Sunderland back up to the Championship after a number of near misses, alongside helping Norwich City up to the Premier League via the playoffs in 2015.

Only needing 24 games to seal promotion for the cursed Black Cats, it's not a shock to see reports are stating that Neil is the standout candidate, away from previous talk surrounding Liam Rosenior, for another sleeping giant aiming to quickly return back to the second tier.

Why Neil's appointment would benefit Pritchard

Alex Pritchard will be overjoyed at this managerial switch potentially happening, with the ex-Sunderland attacking midfielder waxing lyrical about the Scotsman when he was still playing at the Stadium of Light, describing Neil as being a "great manager" who really "stamped his authority" onto proceedings.

Alex Pritchard

The 31-year-old could light up League One as a result, needing a familiar arm around his shoulder to get the best out of him after Mowbray's exit had hindered him – who was previously Sunderland manager also – with the start of his Blues career being rather forgettable.

Previously also on the books at Norwich during Neil's stint at Carrow Road, the diminutive midfielder could sparkle again under the 42-year-old's guidance, having been crucial to Sunderland's promotion story under him too.

Pritchard picked up two of his ten assists during the memorable 2021/22 campaign in the crunch play-offs, assisting both Sunderland goals in the League One play-off final to convincingly get the better of Wycombe Wanderers 2-0, and hand Neil another promotion on his managerial resume.

The 31-year-old creator will hope he can put his uninspiring beginnings in the West Midlands behind him in a division he's caused havoc in before, having only registered one single goal contribution in his first nine Birmingham games.

Yet, it would be very unfair to completely write off the 5 foot 7 attacker now, with Pritchard notching up six assists for Sunderland that same campaign before a move to his newly relegated side happened.

Neil will hope he can add a stunning third EFL promotion to his CV with Pritchard on-song, knowing that anything but an immediate leap back up to the second tier would be deemed as a big failure.

£250,000-per-week Chelsea star likely to join Real Madrid on one condition

Journalist Dean Jones believes a £250,000-per-week star of Chelsea's squad "will end up at Real Madrid", on one crucial condition.

Chelsea players who could be sold to ease PSR worries

Chairman Todd Boehly and his co-sporting directors have a lot of crucial decisions to make very soon, with their end-of-season review also on the horizon and penciled in for next week.

Manager Mauricio Pochettino, after a topsy-turvy debut campaign in the Stamford Bridge dugout, is also set to be assessed. Another important topic of conversation will be the players up for sale this summer, as concerns surround Chelsea's ability to comply with Profit and Sustainability rules.

Chelsea announced a £90.1 million loss in their latest of financial accounts for the 2022/2023 season, coming after two years of lavish spending by BlueCo. The club have invested over £1 billion on new signings alone since 2022, with PSR only allowing clubs to register a £105 million loss over a rolling three-year period.

Everton, Nottingham Forest and Leicester City have all been slapped with serious Premier League sanctions following their breaches of PSR, and Man City are currently battling 115 charges as frustrations mount around the league about FFP's position as a device to keep the traditional big clubs on top.

Reports suggest Chelsea have to raise £100 million through player sales by June 30, or face similar fates to the aforementioned sides. Conor Gallagher, Trevoh Chalobah and Raheem Sterling could leave Chelsea this summer to help bring in the required cash, while Boehly will also be eager to fully offload the plethora of senior players out on loan right now.

Romelu Lukaku is attracting interest from Saudi Arabia in that regard, and left-back Ian Maatsen could join Borussia Dortmund permanently after a brilliant campaign under Edin Terzic.

However, a player who supporters definitely won't want to see leave is right-back Reece James, despite his injury nightmare recently.

Reece James likely to leave Chelsea for Real Madrid on one condition

Speaking on the Ranks FC Ultras podcast this week, reporter Jones believes the £250,000-per-week England international is destined for La Liga – on one crucial condition.

Indeed, he says James "will end up at Real Madrid" if he can keep fit and rediscover his best Chelsea form, coming after the Galacticos have been eyeing him up for two or three years already.

“He’s made his comeback and he’s back in the team, but can we see the real Reece James for a long period of time? If we do then he will end up at Real Madrid," said Jones.

"Genuinely, they’ve wanted him for two or three years if he could become the man he could become, but he’s had setback after setback. He’s so good and if he starts the last game of the season then he’s fit for selection in Gareth Southgate’s eyes. I don’t know, I think there’s a huge temptation to take him.”

“Incredible” Celtic target likely to leave for free in boost for Rodgers

Celtic have been handed a boost in their pursuit of one of their summer targets after it emerged that he will likely depart on a free at the end of the season.

Scottish Premiership in Celtic's hands

Rangers dropping more points in their re-arranged fixture with Dundee on Wednesday has left the Scottish Premiership firmly in Celtic's hands. Their 0-0 draw means that they are three points behind Brendan Rodgers' side after picking up just five points from their last possible 15.

ByDan Emery Apr 17, 2024

Though it has been far from a vintage season for Celtic, they are now on course to end it as champions, but that may only paper over the cracks in a squad that finished bottom of their group in the Champions League, with the second-worst goal difference of anyone in the group stage. To change that, they may have to use the transfer market wisely, and they have already lined up one signing.

Celtic target O'Hare likely to leave for free

Reports from Scotland have linked Celtic with a move for Coventry midfielder Callum O'Hare this summer after some impressive performances in the Championship this season, with the midfielder set to become a free agent at the end of the season as things stand.

Now, CoventryLive reporter Andy Turner has shed some light on the situation this summer, claiming that he expects O'Hare to depart and that 'the writing is on the wall' for his spell with the Championship outfit in what is a boost for Celtic.

“I guess there’s always a chance (he could stay) but I would say that I think it’s unlikely, particularly now that there’s no chance of promotion, which was probably the one last hope of securing him on a new deal", he explained.

“You never know, if he doesn’t get the right offers from elsewhere in the summer he could always change his mind, but it does feel like the writing is on the wall on this one.”

Despite claims that O'Hare might not be here next season, Coventry boss Mark Robins remains a huge fan of the midfielder, and was effusive in his praise earlier in the season.

Callum O'Hare

“I think he has been incredible because I mean looking back at Boxing Day last year and to see him was heart-breaking after the injury and then to see him come to terms with the injury and then go through that.

“The way he is around the place is really infectious and effervescent and he really deserves that. As a group, it's bringing them together. It'll bring them together and it knits everything together and it helps them to progress.

“Callum sort of typifies the Coventry City spirit and the way that we want to go about the job and he's been a link between midfield and the forward since he's been here but tonight was outstanding.

Should he arrive at Celtic Park, those qualities could be music to the ears of the Celtic faithful.

The Atlanta Hawks star is known to do a similar celebration as the Chelsea hero by crossing his arms to mime being cold. Palmer started marking his goals in that way last year, but the NBA sensation insists it was he, not the England international, who did it first.

Young, whose nickname is Ice Trae, says he came up with the celebration, telling the Podcast P with Paul George: "I never heard, respectfully. I heard he's a pretty good soccer player. I can vividly remember being in my basement with my homie like just watching games and seeing our players, our favorite players, doing that sh*t and I was like: 'We got to come up with something.' He was like, 'Sh*t, you Ice Trae. Be cold like sh*t'. And I remember hitting a three. Like I don't know if it was a game-winner or it was a three, and I just did it and then sh*t. It just, I kind of ran with it. I didn't get it from nobody."
