WHAT HAPPENED?
Per Radio Marca's Yon Cuezva, the Gunners are in 'formal' talks to sign the Spain international as they look to bolster their midfielder ahead of the 2024-25 campaign. The journalist further claimed that the Spanish club had rejected an initial offer placed by Arsenal, however, the Premier League giants remain confident of signing Merino, who has given the green light for negotiations to continue.

THE BIGGER PICTURE
The 28-year-old has been linked with a move to Emirates Stadium for several weeks now but a report from Football London recently claimed that the signing of the Spain international divided opinion among the Gunners' top officials, which is why the club waited until mid-August to initiate talks. However, it now seems that the north London club are close to sealing a deal for Merino, who has already verbally agreed to move to England.
DID YOU KNOW?
Merino, who has the experience of playing in the Premier League with Newcastle United during the 2017-18 season, massively contributed to Spain's Euro 2024 triumph as he scored their all-important winning goal against Germany in the round of 16 in the 119th minute.

WHAT NEXT FOR ARSENAL?
Mikel Arteta's men will begin their 2024-25 Premier League journey on Saturday as they take on Wolves in their season opener at Emirates Stadium, while discussions over the potential Merino transfer continue behind the scenes.
With one eye on winning the Scottish Premiership title, Rangers have already turned their focus on just how they might defend their crown next season, with Ibrox chiefs now keen on signing one particular target.
Rangers transfer news
With or without the title, it looks set to be a busy summer for Philippe Clement and his side, who are set for several changes. As things stand, a number of players are set to depart as free agents at the end of the season, with Borna Barisic, John Lundstram and Ryan Jack among those. Lundstram's exit may be particularly frustrating, given that a new contract had looked on the cards earlier in the campaign.

However, those departures should lead to more incomings, with permanent deals reported for both Fabio Silva and Oscar Cortes to kick that off. The likes of Jhon Arias could then follow, with reports suggesting that the Gers have joined the race to sign the South American this summer as they look to fill the void left by Brighton & Hove Albion loanee Abdallah Sima.
Arias isn't the only attacking talent linked with a move, however. According to Graeme Bailey for HITC, Rangers are now keen on signing Eduard Spertsyan in a deal that could cost £13m this summer. In signing the Krasnodar attacking midfielder, the Gers would also be getting one over on Old Firm rivals Celtic and strengthening Clement's side significantly.
The deal won't be an easy one to complete, though, with the ongoing conflict between Russia and Ukraine reportedly likely to be an obstacle in any business between British and Russian clubs. An example of that being the case is when Tottenham Hotspur were allegedly strongly discouraged against selling Davinson Sanchez to Spartak Moscow last summer, with the centre-back eventually moving to Galatasaray instead.
"Interesting" Spertsyan is better than Silva
Able to play on the left-hand side, as well as in an attacking-midfield role and in central midfield, Spertsyan would instantly become a solid option for Clement if those at Ibrox pushed on to secure a move. His arrival would also create doubts over Silva's starting place, even if he does turn his move permanent this summer.

At just 23 years old, Spertsyan is only likely to get better and is a player who would quickly prove to make all the difference in what is likely to be a tight race to win the Scottish Premiership once again next season. If Spertsyan does leave Russia, Football Talent Scout's Jacek Kulig will certainly be among those watching his next move, having previously sung his praises via X:
When the summer window swings open, the attacking midfielder will be one to keep an eye on, with his talent more than capable of adjusting to the Scottish Premiership.

International team-mate Bronze knows all about treading that path, having stepped out of her comfort zone on a couple of occasions. She is currently in the process of bidding farewell to Catalan giants Barcelona, after another Champions League triumph, and has previously spent three years with Lyon.
WHAT BRONZE SAID
Bronze has joked that she is “trying to remember French words to teach Mary Earps”, with a close friend needing all the assistance that she can get. Earps has admitted as much when responding to Bronze by saying: “Help very much welcomed. Duolingo is not cutting it.”

Liverpool's unrelenting calendar shows no sign of abating, with the Premier League table-toppers and Carabao Cup champions travelling to the Czech Republic on Thursday night for the first leg of their Europa League knockout tie against Sparta Prague.
Defying the odds to construct a six-game win streak after falling against Arsenal at the Emirates Stadium at the start of February, Jurgen Klopp's side are firing on all cylinders despite having been beset with substantial injury problems.
Liverpool manager Jurgen Klopp.
Manchester City, imperious as ever and just one point behind Liverpool in the league table, travel to Anfield for a huge showdown on Sunday afternoon in what will undoubtedly affect Klopp's team selection tomorrow.
Sparta Prague are top of the Czech First League with one defeat all term, dispatching Galatasaray in the previous Europa League stage to set up the tie with Liverpool.
Meet Liverpool's "sublime" teenager who could be their own Phil Foden
This exciting talent hasn’t even made his senior debut for Jurgen Klopp’s side yet.
ByAngus Sinclair Mar 4, 2024
Klopp is blessed by the return of Mohamed Salah to training this week, while match-winner Darwin Nunez, Wataru Endo and Dominik Szoboszlai all featured off the bench at the City Ground.
Shuffling the pack is inevitable, and Klopp could make as many as four changes to his starting XI.
1 GK – Caoimhin Kelleher
Liverpool goalkeeper Caoimhin Kelleher.
Who needs Alisson? Caoimhin Kelleher had some big boots to fill after arguably the best goalkeeper in the world was felled by a muscular injury in February, but he's been phenomenal, heroic in the Carabao Cup final win over Chelsea.
Klopp even went so far as to say that the Irishman, aged 25, is "the best no.2 in the world", and he will have the opportunity to raise his stock once again on the continent.
2 RB – Joe Gomez
Liverpool defender Joe Gomez.
Conor Bradley is quite the talent but he's played a lot of football recently and will be expected to start against Pep Guardiola's side, so Joe Gomez should get the nod.
The dynamic defender has played a myriad of roles this season and offers the multi-functional ability to thrive on the right flank of the backline, his natural position.
3 CB – Jarell Quansah
Liverpool defender Jarell Quansah.
Exciting prospects have filtered into Liverpool's first-team in their droves this season but Jarell Quansah was among the first to make an impression.
Described as "absolutely phenomenal" by Trent Alexander-Arnold, the young titan has the qualities to succeed on Merseyside for years to come.
4 CB – Ibrahima Konate
Ibrahima Konate for Liverpool.
It wouldn't be surprising for Klopp to repeat that trick that he implemented against Southampton one week ago, rotating his preferred defensive axis at half-time.
It's a toss of a coin, but Ibrahima Konate might be in line from the opening whistle, with Virgil van Dijk coming in after the break.
5 LB – Kostas Tsimikas
Liverpool left-back Kostas Tsimikas.
Kostas Tsimikas has struggled with injury in recent months but he whipped in the corner for Van Dijk's trophy-winning goal against Chelsea and will replace Andy Robertson against Sparta Prague.
6 DM – Wataru Endo
Wataru Endo
Wataru Endo overcame the knock suffered against Chelsea to come off the bench and make an impact against Nottingham Forest.
The Japan international is dogged and industrious and should start both of Liverpool's fixtures this week, though his inclusion from the outset tomorrow will hand Alexis Mac Allister a well-earned rest.
7 CM – Bobby Clark
Liverpool midfielder Bobby Clark.
Bobby Clark has taken to life in Liverpool's senior set-up with the assured grace of a player set for success at the highest level. The talented teenager played from the outset against Nottingham Forest last weekend and impressed with his ball-playing, dribbling and confidence.

8 CM – Dominik Szoboszlai
Liverpool midfielder Dominik Szoboszlai.
Dominik Szoboszlai returned from the bench against Forest on Saturday afternoon but you'd need to trek back to the last days of January to find the Hungarian's last starting appearance, scoring during Liverpool's Premier League romping over Chelsea.
Hailed as an "artist" by talent scout Jacek Kulig, Szoboszlai has scored five goals and supplied four assists since joining from RB Leipzig last summer, completing 88% of his passes in the Premier League and averaging 1.7 key passes, 1.3 tackles and 6.0 ball recoveries per game, as per Sofascore.
9 RW – Harvey Elliott
Liverpool midfielder Harvey Elliott.
Harvey Elliott's something of a cultured veteran in this Reds squad, having played 37 times in all competitions this season and started the past four fixtures, but it's easy to forget that the creative midfielder is still only 20 years old.
As per FBref, he ranks among the top 6% of positional peers across Europe's top five leagues over the past year for shot-creating actions, the top 4% for progressive passes, the top 2% for progressive carries and the top 1% for total shots taken per 90.
He might not be the most prolific but he could certainly be the difference-maker.
10 LW – Luis Diaz
Luis Diaz warming up for Liverpool.
Ever-present and effervescent, Luis Diaz is a bundle of energy and while he's been impressive across recent months, he needs to be a bit less wasteful in front of goal, having missed eight 'big chances' in the league this season.
Still, the Colombian's presence down the left channel will be crucial against a Sparta Prague side that might surprise a few and inflict damage on Liverpool's still injury-hit squad.
Nottingham Forest had reached an agreement on personal terms with Borussia Dortmund attacker Gio Reyna over a loan deal until the end of the season. The American, who, like Nuno, is represented by Jorge Mendes' agency, wants to leave the Bundesliga club before the end of the January transfer window, and had already shaken hands over a move to the City Ground.
However, Forest, who wanted the option to buy Reyna at the end of the initial loan, are not the only interested party, and it's now emerged that the relegation-threatened Premier League side are set to miss out on the USA international, as Ligue 1 outfit Marseille are in "advanced" talks with Dortmund for Reyna.
Forest deep in talks over Carlos Forbs
According to Fabrizio Romano, the Reds aren't dwelling on the apparent Reyna hijack. Indeed, Forest are in advanced talks to sign Carlos Borges from Ajax. The player, who now prefers to be known as Carlos Forbs, could make a return to English football after his previous stint with Manchester City.
While he too plays on the wing, Romano clarifies that Nuno had wanted to sign both the 19 year-old and Reyna before the deadline, rather than one or the other. Negotiations are progressing well as Forest look to put together the kind of package that could persuade Ajax, and hopefully not miss out a second time.
"Crazy" Forbs showing promise in Ajax chaos
In the words of talent scout Jacek Kulig, Forbs put up some "crazy numbers" during his stint in the City academy. In his final season in Manchester (2022/23), he amassed a whopping 47 direct goal contributions in 33 appearances across all competitions, a rate of 1.4 every match. He finished as the Premier League 2 top scorer with 21 and, having placed for third assists (12), unsurprisingly led the way for goal involvements too (33).
Forbs had also been devastating at a lower level, scoring 23 times and providing 21 assists in 28 Under-18 Premier League appearances, and he handled the step-up with aplomb. He also enjoyed success at international level by making the under-19 Euros team of the tournament after Portugal finished as runners-up, but the big question was how he'd handle the step-up to the senior level.
The winger had initially looked set to join another Premier League side in West Ham, but then Ajax swooped in to hijack the deal. City hold a 20% sell-on clause, which could prompt the Amsterdam outfit to drive a particularly hard bargain.
Forbs has scored twice and set up four more in his first 25 appearances for Ajax, and while those numbers may not sound spectacular, context is important. He's only played 1,119 mins, the equivalent of 12.4 full matches, and he's also had to deal with the turmoil at the club, who sacked manager Maurice Steijn in October after disastrously dropping into the relegation places.
They've since recovered to fifth, but they're still an enormous 21 points behind leaders PSV. In spite of that, Forbs managed to grab a goal and an assist on his Europa League debut against Marseille, and has been playing well recently with three goal involvements in his last six in the league. As long as Forest are patient, then they could have a gem on their hands.
With Leicester City top of the Championship and well on their way to securing a Premier League return at the first time of asking, the Foxes have reportedly turned their attention towards the transfer market. Enzo Maresca could now land some reinforcements capable of helping to shape a potential top-flight side next season.
Leicester transfer news
Leicester did well in the summer to keep hold of the likes of Ricardo Pereira and Jamie Vardy, albeit whilst losing James Maddison. And now they must shift their focus towards further incomings. The Foxes are in the privileged position of enjoying a 10-point gap at the top of the Championship, meaning that it won't be long before they can start thinking about preparing for the Premier League.

Those at The King Power have already missed out on one target, however. Lucas Beraldo rumours suggested that Leicester had held talks to sign the Sao Paulo ace, only to watch on as the defender joined Paris Saint-Germain this month. It is a mistake that the promotion hopefuls will be desperate to avoid repeating in the January transfer window.
According to Gazzetta Dello Sport via FC Inter News and the Leicester Mercury, Leicester City have agreed a deal with Stefano Sensi and must now complete negotiations with Inter Milan to secure the midfielder's signature.
This comes just days after reports claimed that Leicester had made an approach to sign Sensi this month in a deal that could reportedly cost as little as €2m (£1.7m). The 28-year-old, in the last six months of his contract at Inter, will be hoping to see both clubs reach an agreement after reportedly saying yes to a move to Leicester. A player with plenty of experience, Maresca could be getting a player who is more than ready to step into the Premier League.
"Extraordinary" Sensi would be a major coup for Leicester
Once playing a part in helping Inter win the Scudetto, Sensi has since struggled for game time at the San Siro but that doesn't take away the midfielder's clear ability. The Italian earned the praise of Antonio Conte when at his best for the Serie A giants, with the former Inter manager saying via Forza Italian Football: "We are talking about someone who sees football and implements everything that I tell him. I think he was a bit underwhelming in the first half today, but then he stepped up and was extraordinary.
Stefano Sensi for Inter Milan.
“We have players that have the same characteristics that I did: [Matias] Vecino, [Nicolo] Barella and [Marcelo] Brozovic if he were to play as a mezzala, along with Sensi. We must get everyone in their best form. For example there are Vecino and [Roberto] Gagliardini.
"The Uruguayan can shine in this system and Gaglia must return to being the player that we loved in the past. Sensi plays that right away, while Barella is struggling a bit more. Nicolo can’t play in front of the defence as he is more of a mezzala, but he has everything that is needed to become very good.”
Now potentially handed the chance to earn consistent game time at Leicester City, Sensi could return to the form that saw him earn the praise of Conte in what would hand Maresca an instant boost this month.
The Indian board is set to have elections in October, after a prolonged tussle over the implementation of the Lodha recommendations

The BCCI’s Committee of Administrators has appointed the former Chief Election Commissioner (CEC) of India, N Gopalaswami, to take charge of the board’s upcoming elections. He has been named electoral officer for the process, which is set to conclude with the polling on October 22.Gopalaswami had worked as CEC between 2006 and 2009.The BCCI is set for elections after a prolonged tussle over the implementation of the Lodha Committee’s reforms, which was part of the fallout of the 2013 IPL corruption scandal. While the BCCI and its members – the state associations – wrangled over which Lodha recommendations to implement and in what form, the court had appointed a Committee of Administrators (CoA) to oversee the running of the Indian board in early 2017. The CoA supervised the BCCI for nearly 30 months before it announced in May that the board was ready to go ahead with elections.Gopalaswami will perform his role as electoral officer for the BCCI out of the board’s headquarters in Mumbai. He has till June 30 to prepare the electoral protocol for the elections, in consultation with the CoA, and communicate it to the state associations. Then, in the next step of the process, the states will need to appoint electoral officers of their own and hold their elections by September 14 at the latest. The states will then send the BCCI their list of representatives, and the list of candidates for the BCCI’s election will need to be finalised by September 30.It remains to be seen which of the current lot of office-bearers at the state and BCCI levels are eligible to contest the elections, given the cap on number of years in office and cooling-off period introduced by the Lodha Committee. As per the new rules, an office-bearer can work for 18 years as long as the cooling-off period of three years, which comes into play after two consecutive terms of three years each, is exercised.
West Brom are reportedly interested in signing an international striker with over 100 career goals to his name, as Carlos Corberan eyes some important January transfer business.
West Brom news
The Baggies are looking good for a Championship playoff finish at the moment, as Corberan continues to do an impressive job in the Hawthorns hot seat. They cannot afford to rest on their laurels, however, given the level of competition around them, and new signings this month could make them even stronger.
West Brom have been linked with a host of players in recent weeks, including Liverpool youngster Fabio Carvalho, who is now joining Hull City. Bournemouth and Wales striker Kieffer Moore has also emerged as a reported target for the Championship outfit, having fallen out of favour at the Cherries of late, not helped by the brilliant form of Dominic Solanke.
Wolves defender Dexter Lembikisa is another player who could move to the Baggies on loan, in order to keep developing and enjoy more regular playing time away from the Premier League.
Goals are something that are priceless in football, which is why West Brom could be in the market for a new striker this month, and an international target is seen as an option to come in and bolster the attacking options that Corberan has to choose from currently.
West Brom want Umit Nayir
According to an update from journalist Yagiz Sabuncuoglu on X, West Brom are keen on signing Fenerbahce striker Umut Nayir, but face competition from fellow Championship side Cardiff City.
West Bromwich Albion manager Carlos Corberan.
Nayir may not necessarily be a well-known player to English football fans currently, but he is someone who may act as such an eye-catching signing by West Brom in the January window. The 30-year-old has barely played a part in Fenerbahce's current campaign in the league, featuring for just 49 minutes across five appearances, but the Baggies could represent a great fresh start for him.
Nayir has not only scored once in four caps for Turkey, but he also has an overall career tally of 118 strikes to his name at club level, outlining his pedigree as a goalscorer. He may not be getting any younger, but he has a wealth of experience at huge Turkish clubs such as Besiktas, which means he shouldn't be daunted by the prospect of playing in England for the first time.
Having plenty of attacking choices is going to be vital for Corberan in the remaining months of the season, with injuries and form likely to affect certain players, so acquiring Nayir could allow the West Brom manager to rotate effectively and also have strong options from the substitutes' bench.
West Brom could ease the pressure on Dike by signing 19-goal talent

They are also chasing promotion, and while Cardiff are in ninth place, the Baggies' superiority could give them the edge in the race to sign the Fenerbahce man.
