Sheffield Wednesday now considering move for versatile 27 y/o forward

Sheffield Wednesday are considering a move for a versatile attacker who has scored from seven different positions in his career so far, according to a new update from reliable journalist Alex Miller.

Latest Sheffield Wednesday news

The Owls have endured a frustrating week in the Championship, only picking up one point from two outings, having a negative impact on their playoff hopes in the process.

Granted, the harsh 3-0 defeat at Leeds United was no disaster, considering their rivals are sitting top of the league, but the 2-2 draw at home to Bristol City on Wednesday evening felt like two points thrown away, considering they were leading until late in the day.

In terms of January transfer business, Wednesday are believed to have increased their offer for key midfielder Shea Charles, in order to keep him at Hillsborough for the rest of the season. Parent club Southampton have been wanting him back at the club, while a controversial move to Sheffield United has been mentioned, too, which would go down badly with the supporters.

The Owls have also been linked with signing Rangers winger Rabbi Matondo, with contact reportedly made as they look to snap him up from Ibrox. He has two goals and assists apiece in the Scottish Premiership this season, but only six appearances have come his way in the competition, highlighting his lack of minutes.

Sheff Wed keen on signing versatile ace

According to The Star‘s Miller on X, Sheffield Wednesday are eyeing the signing of Nottingham Forest striker Emmanuel Dennis in the January window.

“Understand one of the striker options being considered at Wednesday is out-of-favour Forest man Emmanuel Dennis. Suggestion is he is one on a list. Has a 10-goal PL season under his belt, played with two former Owls previously.”

Dennis could be a really strong signing by Wednesday midway through the season, with the 27-year-old playing and scoring in an incredible seven different positions during his career, including centre forward, right wing, left wing and as a number ten – such versatility could be a big asset.

He has also netted once for Nigeria at international level, and scored 12 goals in the Premier League, with Michael Owen once lauding him as “excellent” and also being hailed by former manager Claudio Ranieri: “Dennis is a very talented player. He’s fast, has good skill, always runs straight to the goal – I love these kinds of players.”

Wednesday badly need more firepower during the second half of their Championship campaign, considering Josh Windass (10) is the only player to have reached double figures in the league this season, with Michael Smith only on five goals in second place.

If Danny Rohl’s side are to have any chance of getting back into the Premier League, they need to start being more prolific in the final third, and Dennis could be such an exciting signing, proving himself at a high level for many years now.

'Going to keep seniors on toes' – Moeen cherishes pressure of intense competition

After a summer of indifferent white-ball performances from the men’s senior side, arrives the Hundred, as exactly the whiff of fresh air the national team might be in need of. England began this season well, with a comfortable sweep of the ODI series against Netherlands, but have since faltered, losing seven of their last 11 completed white-ball internationals. The Hundred comes amidst a change of captain and coach for England, a few losses, an air of general transition, and also, according to Moeen Ali, an opportunity for younger guys to make a name for themselves, and to audition for a spot in a side looking ahead imminently to the T20 World Cup.As he did last year in taking them to the final, Moeen will lead Birmingham Pheonix, and start their campaign on Saturday against Trent Rockets. And while Moeen has adapted creditably under the new England regime, he recognises that the pressure on others in the national fold from players outside is not only inevitable but also healthy.Related

“It is a great thing [having that competition for places], and [there is] a lot more competition now than there was before,” Moeen said, speaking ahead of the launch of KP Snacks’ summer cricket roadshow at The Black Prince Trust in Oval. “When you don’t play well – or you’re losing – there’s always going to be changes, and I do think it’s a great thing.”With the change of coach and captain, there’s always a chance of new faces coming in, just like when Morgs [Eoin Morgan] and Trevs [Trevor Bayliss] took over in 2015. There was a lot of fresh faces. They give you a lot more energy.”It’s going to keep all the senior players on their toes because there are some fantastic players coming through. Everybody under pressure is really good because it’s going to benefit us in the long term.”Moeen knows well how the tournament can throw a little-known youngster into the mix, having overseen the emergence of Will Smeed at Birmingham last season. Smeed impressed in the Blast, earned a deal at the Hundred as an injury replacement, and ended as the team’s third-highest run-scorer behind Liam Livingstone and Moeen himself; he had the second highest strike rate (172.91) among the top 20 run-scorers in the competition.”Harry Brook will be somebody people will keep an eye on; it’s a great platform”, Moeen on the Hundred helping youngsters•Getty Images

“The Hundred is great for younger players; you can kind of pluck players out of the blue a little which is really good. A few of the teams have got some really young players this year who have been around a little bit, but [the Hundred] is a great platform for them to really shine and do well and be on that big stage,” Moeen said.”Especially now, as England haven’t played so well this summer and if somebody has been absolutely outstanding, he’s put his hand up trying to get into that team. Someone like Harry Brook is in contention to do that; I know he’s played a couple of games but he’s a brilliant player in my opinion.”He’d be somebody I am sure people will keep an eye on. It’s a great platform for players to do well in, to put their hands up, and do something that can catch the eye of the captain and the coach because everybody will be watching.”That’s important for the younger players, that there is a sort of window for players now. In the past it was quite difficult for players to get picked for England because the side was doing well. But I think there are a couple of spots – or at least a chance – for players to do really well.”Moeen may be a World Cup winner, with experience of captaining England; he may be 17 years into his professional career; he may even have led Birmingham to last year’s final, but the format feels fresh enough for him to feel the need to cram in some last-minute revision ahead of Saturday.”The death bowling is the tricky one because it’s five balls, and you stay at the same end,” he said. “You kind of need three death bowlers in the end – one just in case – because [it is] more than likely they will bowl in the last 15 balls. There’s little things like that and I’ll need to remind myself again of the exact rules again.”The whole over-rate thing is a brilliant rule, with the one fielder coming up. We’ve got to go through the rules again. It’s obviously been a while since we played it.”

The Brazil international has been limited to just three Serie A starts this season and, while he has a contract until 2029, Juve are said to be willing to discuss a deal this summer. Premier League clubs have been linked – Aston Villa have previously been linked with a move to re-sign the star – but Juve will not accept below €40 million (£34.5m/$44m), having paid €50m (£43m/$55m) to secure his signature last summer.

Amazing Jackson rival: Chelsea ready bid for "one of the best in the world"

Chelsea have been fantastic in the 2024/25 Premier League season, and are flying high under Enzo Maresca. One of the main reasons for this is the fact they have been so ruthless in front of goal. The Blues have a squad filled with attacking firepower, and it is fair to say they have turned up this season.

The West Londoners have scored 37 goals in the top flight, the second-highest behind only Tottenham Hotspur with 39. Furthermore, the Blues have also created the second most big chances, with 61. Liverpool are the only side with more, creating 71.

Now, with the January transfer window approaching, it seems Maresca wants to only add more goals to his side because Chelsea are linked with a new striker.

Chelsea could sign big-name striker in 2025

Going into the January transfer window, rumours are beginning to swirl again concerning Nigeria centre-forward Victor Osimhen. The 25-year-old is currently on loan at Galatasaray from Italian giants Napoli and is enjoying an excellent season in Turkey.

Now, according to reports on the continent, Chelsea are one of the clubs who are willing to exercise the player’s release clause at the turn of the year. The report suggests that the Blues have ‘shown great interest’ in signing Osimhen this winter.

Transfer Focus

Mega money deals, controversial moves and big-name flops. This is the home of transfer news and opinion across Football FanCast.

However, they would not be alone in their hunt for his signature. Premier League rivals Manchester United and French giants Paris Saint-Germain are also showing interest.

Should a deal for the 25-year-old get over the line, he could cost a hefty sum, reported to be around £62m. Although he is on loan in Turkey, there is a break clause in his contract that would see him have the chance to leave and sign permanently for a new club, if they meet the above sum of money.

How Osimhen compares to Nicolas Jackson

In a Chelsea side that is already devastating in front of goal, adding Osimhen to that attack could wreak havoc on the Premier League. The striker is simply deadly and has been fantastic for Galatasaray this term, scoring 12 goals in 15 games in all competitions.

However, the 25-year-old is not only clinical for the Turkish giants. His record for Napoli is outstanding.

In 133 appearances for Gli Azzurri, Osimhen has scored 76 goals, grabbing 18 assists, averaging 0.71 goals and assists per game. In the Scudetto-winning season of 2022/23, he scored 31 times in 39 games.

Should the Blues sign Osimhen this winter, he would be merely adding to the firepower they have in attacking areas. Of course, their first-choice striker is Nicolas Jackson, who has performed superbly under Maresca so far.

In 16 top-flight games in the 2024/25 campaign, the Senegal striker has scored nine times and provided three assists. He has been a consistent goalscorer for his side, not going longer than two games without a Premier League.

Perhaps Jackson’s best game in the top flight this season came against West Ham United away from home. He scored twice and grabbed an assist for Cole Palmer in a 3-0 win against their London rivals.

Having both Osimhen and Jackson at the club as striking options will be great depth. As the stats via FBref show, they are both fantastic players. The Nigerian striker averages 1.07 goals per game in the league this season and 0.33 goals per shot on target. In contrast, the Chelsea number 15 averages 0.64 goals per game and 0.39 goals per shot on target.

Signing Osimhen can only be a good thing for the Blues. Not only would they be signing “one of the best strikers in the world” as labelled by Joao Cancelo, but they’d be bringing in excellent competition for Jackson, which could only make him a better player.

Maresca will have tactical flexibility, with the option to play one or both of the centre-forwards and will always have goals in his side. £62m is a big investment, but there are certainly reasons to believe it is a good way to spend money in January.

Chelsea had signed Neymar 2.0, now he’s struggling big time since leaving

Chelsea owner Todd Boehly has certainly put his money where his mouth is since taking over the reins back in May 2022 from Roman Abramovich.

The American businessman paid £4.25b to take control of the club, but he’s also invested heavily in the playing squad since his arrival.

Boehly has splashed £1.2b on new players, looking to make key additions to make an immediate impact, whilst also keeping one eye on the future with big money spent on young prospects.

Chelsea chairman Todd Boehly

Such transfers have allowed Enzo Maresca to take to life at Stamford Bridge like a duck to water, leading the Blues to second place after the first 14 Premier League outings.

It was one window before his arrival that set the club on their way, looking to end their lengthy wait for a league triumph.

Chelsea’s transfer window in the summer of 2023

During the summer of 2023, Chelsea owner Boehly dropped £400m on new signings to try and avoid a repeat of the season prior.

The Blues ended the season in 12th place, their lowest finish for well over a decade, in what was a transitional period after the American’s takeover 12 months earlier.

His statement addition came in the form of midfielder Moises Caicedo from Brighton and Hove Albion, forking out £115m – a British record fee – for the services of the Ecuadorian.

It was the second time in a matter of months the club splashed a fee of over £100m on a player, with Enzo Fernández costing £106.8m in the January before the summer window.

Nicolas Jackson was also signed to add firepower in the attacking areas, now looking to be well worth his £32m fee after his start to 2024/25, which has seen him already score eight times in the Premier League.

However, the club also invested in a crop of youngsters for the future, including one star who arrived in England with huge expectations for the future – but he’s been unable to produce the levels many expected.

The player who Chelsea thought could’ve been their own Neymar

Deivid Washington was just one prospect signed during the aforementioned window, arriving as one of many during an influx of Brazilian youth stars moving to West London.

Santos strikerDeivid Washington.

However, former Santos teammate Angelo Gabriel was another to join the Blues in 2023, having huge expectations placed on his shoulders after being compared to Neymar by former coach Betinho:

The attacker joined at the age of just 18, before being sent on a season-long loan to sister side Strasbourg for the 2023/24 campaign to gain European game time.

He would make 21 Ligue 1 appearances during his temporary stint, failing to score a single goal, but managing to register three assists – leading to analyst Ben Mattinson dubbing him a “world-class” talent.

Angelo was included in Chelsea’s pre-season tour of the USA, impressing against Wrexham, in particular, but was ultimately unable to force his way into Maresca’s plans and departed the Bridge without making a single appearance.

The winger would join Saudi Arabian side Al-Nassr in the summer in a deal worth £19m – banking a £4m profit despite his lack of impact for the Blues.

He’s since struggled to make a name for himself in the Middle East, scoring just twice since his transfer in the summer – yet to demonstrate why he was so highly rated back in his homeland.

Given his lack of success during the ongoing season, Maresca may have made the right call in allowing him to depart permanently – especially considering the form of the likes of Jackson in recent months.

Undoubtedly, he has huge potential and plenty of time to fulfil such promise, but as of yet, Angelo is yet to demonstrate why he received such high praise during his time at Santos.

£34m first team player open to leaving Spurs as club contact him directly

Tottenham Hotspur are facing a crucial set of fixtures with a paper-thin squad, following a succession of injuries and suspensions, but that hasn’t stopped reports of players potentially departing N17.

Tottenham preparing for Carabao Cup quarter-final against Man United

Spurs boss Ange Postecoglou is currently preparing his side for an all-important Carabao Cup quarter-final clash against Man United on Thursday evening, with the competition potentially representing the club’s best chance of winning major silverware.

"In recent days" – Tottenham make contact to sign 28-year-old at under £10m

ByEmilio Galantini Dec 17, 2024

Postecoglou stated at the beginning of 2024/2025 that he usually wins trophies in his second season, comments which will surely be looked back on if the Australian fails to deliver on his promise to supporters.

In truth, barring a sensational 5-0 win away to Southampton, and 4-0 demolition of Man City at the Etihad Stadium, Spurs have looked far away from delivering a first piece of silverware since 2008.

Nottingham Forest (Away)

Wolves (Home)

Newcastle United (Home)

Arsenal (Away)

The Lilywhites boast just those two victories from their last nine games in all competitions, a run which includes disappointing defeats to the likes of Ipswich Town, Chelsea and Galatasaray, but Postecoglou has been forced to contend with numerous injuries and suspensions in that time.

That being said, Man United have blown hot and cold under Ruben Amorim since the Portuguese’s arrival at Old Trafford, so there is every chance that Spurs could overcome the Red Devils – especially on home turf.

Postecoglou won’t be able to call upon a number of first-team players for the encounter, due to long-term injuries, and one of them is Brazil striker Richarlison.

The 27-year-old is currently sidelined with a thigh problem, which is expected to keep him out until mid-way through January (Premier Injuries), but teams from his homeland are expressing a serious interest in tempting him away mid-season.

Richarlison open to leaving Tottenham

Fluminense president Mario Bittencourt recently confirmed that he wants to sign Richarlison, and has sent official documentation to Spurs asking if they would like to open transfer talks.

“What is concrete is that we have expressed a formal interest in Richarlison. We know how difficult it is to bring him in,” said Bittencourt.

“We believe that he may want to be close to the Brazilian national team, to return home to the club where he excelled. I have a close relationship with him. I was vice-president of football when he arrived.

“We sent a first document to the English club, still without an offer, but asking if they would like to negotiate.”

However, according to UOL, Bittencourt and Fluminense will now face stiff competition from fellow Brazilian side Flamengo. The outlet reports that Fluminense have contacted Richarlison directly to express their interest in holding negotiations, and they’re prepared to offer Tottenham around £17 million to secure the ex-Everton star’s services.

However, Spurs are demanding nearly double that amount, and want around £34 million to consider selling. Chairman Daniel Levy and co are also adamant that they will not consider a loan deal, even with the option to buy.

Richarlison himself, while prioritising a stay in England, doesn’t completely close the door on a return to Brazil – and is open to either that or a move to Saudi Arabia.

'He runs for two players' – How non-stop Dominik Szoboszlai silenced his Liverpool critics to become a key member of Arne Slot's side

The Hungarian suffered a dip in form after a stunning start to his Anfield career, but he's re-emerged as a huge influence in recent months

It's not always easy but, in general, footballers don't like to look too far ahead. Things can change quickly on and off the field. Getting caught up in trophy talk can be dangerous. It's nearly always best to embrace the 'one game at a time' cliche. Dominik Szoboszlai learned that valuable lesson last season.

He never made any ill-advised or arrogant predictions or proclamations but, looking back on Liverpool's quadruple bid under Jurgen Klopp, which unravelled not long after their Carabao Cup triumph, the Hungary captain now feels he was a little too forthcoming about his team's chances of a clean sweep.

"When I came to Liverpool I wanted to win everything in my first season!" he recently admitted. "So, I don't like to talk about the title now."

Hardly surprising, then, that when Szoboszlai was asked about Liverpool fans singing 'We're going to win the league' during the closing stages of last Sunday week's 2-0 win at Manchester City, he swerved the issue. "I didn't hear that," he said before immediately adding, "I was so tired."

Of course, that could easily have been the case, because Szoboszlai really did run himself into the ground at the Etihad – quite literally, with the exhausted midfielder collapsing to the turf the moment the full-time whistle blew. Just three days later, though, he somehow summoned up sufficient energy to produce another 90-minute display of dynamism as Liverpool took another significant step towards winning the title by beating Newcastle at home to move 13 points clear of second-placed Arsenal.

What's more, Szoboszlai had scored in back-to-back games for Liverpool for the first time since arriving at Anfield in the summer of 2023 – further evidence that a player still being criticised just last month for his lack of an end product has become a staple in Arne Slot's side.

£60 million 'steal'

Not many players have made a more immediate impact at Liverpool than Szoboszlai. He'd been signed from RB Leipzig for £60 million ($76m), a not insignificant sum of money, but quickly set about showing why his former boss at Red Bull Salzburg, Jesse Marsch, considered it "a steal".

There were no airs or graces about Szoboszlai, but from the moment he walked in the door, he looked right at home at Anfield. Even the incredibly colourful Klopp was struck by the Hungarian's "charisma".

He clearly didn't lack confidence, either. Szoboszlai took the No.8 jersey once worn by his idol Steven Gerrard (he even has a tattoo inspired by the former Reds skipper) and plenty of comparisons were drawn between the two during the first few months of the 2023-24 season.

Marsch felt that Szoboszlai was actually more like "a modern-day David Beckham" because "when the ball is on his right foot he can put it anywhere he wants. The precision and the pace he can put on the ball is ridiculous. And I say 'modern day', it's because he is more mobile and more dynamic [than Beckham]."

AdvertisementGetty Images SportHeavy work load takes its toll

However, it wouldn't be long before Szoboszlai's all-action approach began to catch up with him. After playing every minute of Liverpool's opening 10 Premier League games, he almost inevitably began to slow down, before breaking down. He picked up a hamstring problem in January and never really recovered.

Szoboszlai was directly involved in 11 goals last season, but only three after returning from injury – and all of those arrived during the two legs of the Europa League last-16 tie with Sparta Prague. Tellingly, he ran out of steam around the same time as his team, with Szoboszlai afforded just one start during Liverpool's final seven Premier League games.

Unsurprisingly, he also struggled at Euro 2024 as Hungary failed to make it out of their group. "He was not in top form and this is also a consequence of the fact that he has not been at 100 percent since his injury in the winter," the president of the Hungarian football federation (MLSZ), Sandor Csanyi, told in July. "At the Euros, he had also been struggling with a minor injury for a long time."

'Numbers need to go up'

Thankfully, Szoboszlai has had no such fitness issues this season. He's only missed two Premier League games to date: one through suspension, and the other through illness.

Ryan Gravenberch's emergence as the solution to Liverpool's longstanding problem at No.6 has certainly helped, as Slot now essentially has four versatile potential starters to choose from in midfield (Szoboszlai, Alexis Mac Allister and Curtis Jones are the other three), while Wataru Endo has proven himself an extremely useful option off the bench, a dual-winning machine that can be utilised when team-mates are exhausted and games need to be closed out.

However, while Slot was happy with Szoboszlai's performance and fitness levels during the first half of the season, it was telling that he publicly demanded more decisive contributions from his first-choice No.10 in the final third.

The Dutchman acknowledged that while the 24-year-old's pressing was "outstanding", he needed to be "even more involved in scoring goals and creating chances for us.

"Last season he scored three [in the league] and, for an attacking midfielder at Liverpool, his numbers need to go up." They are now, though.

Getty Images SportStepping up

Szoboszlai has already surpassed his tally of goal involvements for 2023-24 and he's in far better shape going into the business end of the season than he was at this point last year. Indeed, only three Reds played every minute of their crucial and gruelling recent run of five Premier League games in 15 days, and Szoboszlai was one of them (captain Virgil van Dijk and goalkeeper Alisson Becker were the others).

Even more encouragingly, he got stronger as the games got tougher. Szoboszlai was excellent in the 2-2 draw at Aston Villa and would have had a deserved, game-winning assist had Darwin Nunez not missed an open goal midway through the second half.

Mohamed Salah, though, was never going to waste the clever near-post flick that bamboozled Man City at the Etihad, while Szoboszlai then netted the killer second goal after being released into space shortly before the break by the Egyptian.

West Ham blown away by £67k-p/w Antonio replacement they want to sign ASAP

West Ham United are on the hunt for attacking reinforcements and have identified one potential new face to add to Julen Lopetegui’s ranks in 2025, according to a report.

Goal-shy West Ham leave Lopetegui under early pressure

Six games into the Premier League season, West Ham have scored just six goals, the same number as 20th placed Wolves. After heavy spending over the summer, they have just one win to show for it, while Julen Lopetegui became the first West Ham boss in Premier League history to lose each of his first three home games.

None of his new signings have got their first goal in West Ham colours either, with Niclas Fullkrug, Crysencio Summerville and Carlos Soler all toiling without success.

Crysencio Summerville for West Ham

It means that the Hammers are 14th in the Premier League with five points to their name, and will be hoping to see a large improvement in their next run of games, which include clashes with Ipswich Town, Nottingham Forest and Everton.

But clearly there is a problem at the top of the pitch, with Michail Antonio yet to open his account for the season and Danny Ings largely used from the substitutes bench, leaving the responsibility on Tomas Soucek to score the equaliser in their 1-1 draw with Brentford over the weekend.

At 31-years-old, £25m addition Fullkrug is not a long-term solution to their issues, and they remain on the hunt for a man to lead their line and finally take the mantle from Antonio, who has done so for the last decade but now looks well beyond his best. Now, they may have identified their man.

West Ham chasing Valencia star

That comes as Caught Offside claim that the Hammers are set to rival Aston Villa for the signature of highly-rated Valencia striker Hugo Duro in the upcoming transfer windows. The Spaniard, who has scored twice this season, is still just 24-years-old and is likely to improve in the years to come.

The striker still has four years left to run on his £67,000 a week deal in Spain but is thought to be available for between €25m and €30m (£20.8m and £25m).

It is added that “manager Julen Lopetegui sees Duro’s energy and goal-scoring ability as a major potential asset” for the Hammers, who have looked docile in the final third, while they “have been impressed by the Spanish striker’s talents” and “are keen” to “sign him in the near future”.

It remains to be seen whether a transfer ultimately materialises, but following their failure to land Jhon Duran from Aston Villa over the summer there is clearly work still to be done on the Hammers frontline, and early form suggests that it is an issue that will need to be remedied sooner rather than later.
