"I’ve been told" – Reporter shares 49ers’ ambitious Leeds transfer plans

Leeds recorded the second-highest spend of any team in the Championship following their relegation from the Premier League last summer, with only Leicester (£38m) eclipsing their outlay of (£31m). The Whites brought new nine new faces into Elland Road, but there was also an inevitable exodus that recouped £27m, meaning the club's net spend was slight at £4m.

It's been a quiet January for Daniel Farke's side so far, with the big story Djed Spence's early return to Tottenham Hotspur midway through his loan spell. Sonny Perkins has been recalled to Yorkshire from Oxford United, but aside from that there's been nothing to report.

Farke has previously played down the chances of a busy window at the club, while stressing that Leeds will be alert to opportunities. "I expect a much more quiet and calm January to the last transfer period for example," he said. "We wish for a quiet January, but won’t fall asleep and when there are decisions to make, we will also make decisions and you never know what happens."

Mepham a target in "ambitious" window

Speaking to GiveMeSport, talkSPORT journalist Alex Crook offered a markedly different insight into Leeds' transfer plans based on what he's been hearing behind the scenes. He's told Whites supporters that the the 49ers will be "ambitious" in the market as they try to make an instant return to the Premier League.

Farke will want a new full-back after Spence left, wide player David Brooks is a known target, and Crook says Bournemouth teammate Chris Mepham is also on Leeds' radar.

Daniel Farke.

"It's interesting because the manager said they're not going to do much to this window because he's happy with his squad," he said. "But I've been told by people actually they're going to be quite ambitious. They think they've got a great chance of getting in the Premier League, so they're going to go for it. You mentioned David Brooks, Chris Mepham of Bournemouth is someone else I think they admire.

"Having sent Djed Spence back, you'd have thought they've got a full-back lined up. So I think Leeds might be a lot more active than Daniel Farke is laying on."

Mepham faces uncertain future

Within Crook's update, it's Mepham's name that will catch the eye of the Leeds faithful, and this would be an astute signing for the club's promotion push. Having originally been part of the Chelsea academy, Mepham then spent seven years with Brentford before joining Bournemouth for around £12m in 2019. He signed a contract extension in the autumn of 2022 but his deal only runs until the summer of 2025, so he's now entered the final 18 months, and his slide down the pecking order will surely render his future uncertain.

After starting 24 top-flight games last year following Bournemouth's promotion, Mepham has only made the XI for two of the first 20 this term under new manager Andoni Iraola. Tellingly, he's actually started more games (three) in the two domestic cup competitions.

Leeds United want to sign "dangerous" new full-back in £8m+ transfer

He could replace Djed Spence at Elland Road.

ByDavid Comerford Jan 5, 2024

Rather than being a limited defender, he may be absent from the line-up simply because Iraola stylistically prefers other options. The stats suggest that Mepham excels at the fundamentals – he ranks in the 92nd percentile or better for shots blocked (1.13), interceptions (1.82) and clearances (6.17) per 90 minutes, which speaks to his appetite for the dirty side of the game as well as his smart positioning. His aerial duel success rate of 65.9% is also well above average for his position (73rd percentile).

A 34-cap Welsh international who's played all but one game for his country at the last two major tournaments, Mepham would be an experienced and solid addition to the Leeds backline. A loan until the end of the season makes sense for all parties.

South Africa's Rory Kleinveldt calls time on first-class career

The 35-year-old from Cape Town last played a Test in February 2013, but had been active in the domestic first-class circuit and the county scene in England

ESPNcricinfo staff17-Jan-2019Rory Kleinveldt, the South Africa Test bowler, who also represented Cape Cobras, Hampshire and Northamptonshire, called time on his red-ball career on Thursday. The 35-year-old from Cape Town last played a Test in February 2013, but had been active in the domestic first-class circuit and the county scene in England. His decision came a day after the Cobras’ six-wicket loss against the Warriors in the 4-Day Franchise Series, at Newlands.Kleinveldt announced the news of his retirement from the longest format on Twitter, where, in the wake of tributes from the likes of Dale Steyn, Herchelle Gibbs and Paul Harris, he clarified that it was only “red-ball cricket” that he was quitting.

Kleinveldt’s maiden county stint came with Hampshire, in 2008. However, since his last appearance for South Africa, an ODI in July 2013, he plied his trade at Northamptonshire, and made an impact immediately. His 57-wicket season in 2015 in the County Championship, followed by astute bowling in the T20 tournament, led Northants to the T20 finals day that season. A few months later, Kleinveldt confirmed he had no interest in resuming his international career in a letter to Cricket South Africa. In all, Kleinveldt finished with 10 wickets in Test cricket, while also collecting 454 first-class wickets at an average of 27.98.

Spurs could sign Vincent Janssen 2.0 by completing £39m move

Tottenham struck gold with their recruitment into the building this summer, softening the blow of Harry Kane’s departure to Bayern Munich expertly by signing exciting new talents to fit into new Spurs boss Ange Postecoglou’s overhaul.

Micky van de Ven, Pedro Porro and James Maddison have been early standout performers under the Australian head coach, key components to Spurs’ unbeaten run so far in the Premier League.

Maddison, in particular, has been instrumental, notching up eight goal contributions from ten matches after joining Tottenham from Leicester City for £40m.

The north London hot shots could be in the market for more players this January despite their electric start to this campaign, with Feyenoord attacker Santiago Gimenez linked with Postecoglou’s high-flyers according to reports.

Tottenham right-back Pedro Porro.

Spurs will have to be cautious in their pursuit of the Eredivisie forward, however, eager to not let history repeat itself.

Vincent Janssen left AZ Alkmaar behind for Tottenham in similar circumstances back in 2016, spectacularly flopping throughout his doomed stay in the English capital subsequently.

Tottenham’s interest in Gimenez

Fabrizio Romano has reported reported, via TEAMtalk that Spurs are interested in the 22-year-old striker as a potential option to strengthen the attack, Richarlison falling down the pecking order even further at the club if this move is pulled off.

brennan-johnson-richarlison-tottenham-opinion

The notorious reporter stated: "Something in the region of £39m could be the right fee to make it happen. From what I’m told, Tottenham [Hotspur] scouts have been following the player already last year. They saw that Gimenez is a very good striker… Decisions will be made in the next months.”

Gimenez justifies this price-tag with a sensational 13 goals from just 11 Dutch first-division appearances to date.

Still, Spurs will know too well that potency in front of goal in the Netherlands doesn’t always mean that a similar clinical edge will be apparent when relocating to the Premier League.

Janssen’s nightmare at Spurs

Janssen, who joined Spurs at the same age Gimenez is now, endured a torrid time at White Hart Lane after setting the Eredivisie alight with his goal output.

The misfiring Dutch striker would only manage six goals for Tottenham from 42 appearances, a weak goal return after netting a far superior 32 goals from 49 games whilst at AZ.

Tottenham flop Vincent Janssen.

The 6-foot forward, who is now 29, has rebuilt his career since this nightmare spell in north London with Janssen the leading man in attack for Royal Antwerp currently.

Gimenez will just pray that he doesn’t fall victim to the pressure of a high-profile move in a similar fashion, hoping to excel in his new surroundings instead of being disregarded as a dud.

Gimenez’s numbers this season

Feyenoord’s lethal talismanic striker continues to be a terrifying prospect for Eredivisie defenders to contain, occupying second spot in the top scorer chart for the league.

The standout display of Gimenez’s season so far came against Ajax, netting three goals against the Dutch titans to give Feyenoord a comprehensive 4-0 win in De Klassieker.

Only registering four shots in the 90 minutes per Sofascore, the Mexico International showcased his prolific nature for his club side to net a devastating hat-trick.

Over the last year for the Rotterdam-based giants, Gimenez has averaged a staggering 8.32 touches in the attacking penalty area per 90 minutes according to FBRef – the sign of a striker always waiting for an opportunity to strike from close range, always lurking to finish off a chance.

Tottenham will attempt everything in their power to persuade the 22-year-old to join the North London outfit, hopeful that lightning won’t strike twice when pursuing exports from the Eredivisie and that Gimenez will finally plug the gap Kane left behind up top.

Cody Gakpo back to his best?! Liverpool star shines in left-wing role as Netherlands thump Scotland 4-0 in impressive Euro 2024 warm-up outing

The Netherlands were impressive in their Euro 2024 warm-up outing on Friday night, thumping Scotland in comfortable fashion, with Cody Gakpo particularly impressive.

After the visitors started brightly and nearly opened the scoring through Ryan Christie's header, only for goalkeeper Mark Flekken to tip his effort onto the bar, the hosts took the lead in stunning fashion through Tijjani Reijnders' near 25-yard strike in the 40th minute.

In an end to end game, Memphis Depay was superbly denied by Angus Gunn in the Scotland goal just after the interval, before Flekken tipped away a John McGinn piledriver moments later.

After Gunn was at full stretch to keep out Cody Gakpo's rasping drive, the Scots should have equalised through Lawrence Shankland, but he could only hit the bar when clean through on goal.

Shortly after, the Dutch, who were not at their free-flowing best for long periods, put the game beyond doubt when Georginio Wijnaldum headed in Gakpo's sumptuous cross in the 72nd minute to make it 2-0.

Wout Weghorst looked to have opened the flood gates when he guided a header into the corner after Scott McTominay misjudged his jump in the 84th minute and then just over 90 seconds later Donyell Malen stabbed home to complete the rout on Friday night.

Gakpo has been criticised in recent weeks for his Liverpool performances but it could be argued the Dutchman has not played in his best position for the Reds; namely the left wing. That wasn't the case against Scotland as the former PSV Eindhoven star, who admittedly is a versatile forward option, looked a threat down that flank – which Liverpool boss Jurgen Klopp would do well to take notice of.

Getty ImagesTHE BIG LOSER

Scotland boss Steve Clarke may have been pleased with what he saw for the first hour or so but his substitutions shortly before and after the Dutch's second only made things worse for the visitors and his players then wilted under the home side's rising pressure. In contrast, his managerial counterpart Ronald Koeman got his subs spot on.

Wayne Parnell, the South Africa allrounder, has made himself available in all three formats for the Cape Town-based Cobras after failing to secure a national contract for the 2018-19 year.Parnell has not played competitive cricket since January and last represented South Africa in October 2017 but will make his return in the Global T20 Canada League later this month, where he has been signed by the Edmonton Royals. Participation in that tournament and regular franchise appearances on the South African domestic scene could allow Parnell to push for a place in the 2019 World Cup squad. The Cobras have also secured the services of veteran Rory Kleinveldt across all formats and have retained nationally contracted players Hashim Amla, Vernon Philander and JP Duminy. Temba Bavuma, who spent a season in the Cape, has returned to the Lions. Dane Paterson and Dane Piedt are their other players with international experience.Among their new acquisitions is batsman Janneman Malan from North West. Malan is the younger brother of Pieter, who already plays at the Cobras, and was named CSA’s three-day cricketer of the year at the recent awards ceremony. In the bowling department, Tladi Bokako joins Cobras from the Warriors. The Cobras have also elevated provincial semi-professional players David Bedingham, the leading run-scorer for Boland in both the three-day and fifty-over competitions last season, Mthiwekhaya Nabe, a nominee for the domestic newcomer of the season at the CSA awards and allrounder Ferisco Adams to full franchise contracts. The Cobras did not win any of the three competitions last season but coach Ashwell Prince believes they are shaping up strongly in the 2018-19 summer. “The team is not only in a rebuilding phase, but is there to compete and win trophies. And what makes this squad so good is its versatility, because 90% or more will be vying for spots in all three formats.”Cobras squad: Ferisco Adams, Hashim Amla, David Bedingham, JP Duminy, Dayyaan Galiem, Zubayr Hamza, Simon Khomari, Rory Kleinveldt, George Linde, Janneman Malan, Pieter Malan, Aviwe Mgijima, Mthiwekhaya Nabe, Wayne Parnell, Dane Paterson, Vernon Philander, Dane Piedt, Jason Smith, Kyle Verreynne, Lizaad Williams
