KPL players reported approaches to ACU, says KSCA secretary

Secretary Sudhakar Rao says matter has been reported to anti-corruption officials; Bijapur Bulls manager says no untoward activity

ESPNcricinfo staff31-Aug-2018Two days after it was reported that unusual betting patterns in the Karnataka Premier League in India had caused concerns for bookmakers in England, the Karnataka State Cricket Association, which runs the T20 league, confirmed that some players had reported approaches made to them to the Anti-Corruption Unit.”Yes, there have been people from Rajasthan who have approached players in the league, but then the players have reported all such activities to the ACU officials,” Sudhakar Rao, the KSCA secretary, told . “The Anti-Corruption Unit is now looking into the reports and we are awaiting their version before taking any action.”The match between Hubli Tigers and Bijapur Bulls on August 16 was the fixture that had unusual betting patterns. Just before the toss, Hubli were 1.9 (10/11; meaning the market’s expectation of a win for them was almost the same as its expectation of a loss) but, by the time the game started, enough money had been pumped into the market that the price moved to 1.2 (1/5) suggesting a great deal of confidence in Hubli’s victory. Hubli subsequently won what appears to have been a fairly unremarkable game by four-wickets with seven deliveries to spare. As a result of the betting activity, however, Betfair withdrew markets for the rest of the tournament.”We did not see anything untoward from a team’s standpoint and from a cricketing standpoint,” Rahul Kargal, the Bijapur manager, said. “Everything is under wraps as far as the franchise is concerned and we control everything which happens with the team and all the strategies which are in place.”Just so you know, there is one anti-corruption unit representative who has been embedded with each franchise. Now, he monitors the movement in each team, players and managers included at all times. He stays in the hotel, travels with the team for any official or unofficial arrangement. He even comes to the practice session and all the respective franchise managers make him aware of all the movements and developments at all times.”

Ishant Sharma sanctioned for Dawid Malan send-off

The India fast bowler has been handed one demerit point and fined 15% of his match fee

ESPNcricinfo staff04-Aug-2018Ishant Sharma has earned a demerit point and a fine of 15% of his match fee for his send-off to Dawid Malan in England’s second innings at Edgbaston. The Level 1 offence violated Article 2.1.7 of ICC’s code of conduct, which relates to “using language, actions or gestures which disparage or which could provoke an aggressive reaction from a batsman upon his/her dismissal during an international match”.As he ran away in celebration after getting Malan caught at gully, Ishant was seen turning towards the departing batsman and yelling out. After the day’s play, Ishant admitted to the offence and accepted the sanction proposed by match referee Jeff Crowe and, as such, there was no need for a formal hearing. The charge was levelled by on-field umpires Aleem Dar and Chris Gaffaney, third umpire Marais Erasmus and fourth umpire Tim Robinson.Level 1 breaches carry a minimum penalty of an official reprimand, and a maximum penalty of 50% of a player’s match fee, and one or two demerit points.

Offer submitted: Everton table bid to sign £6m forward in January

Everton have submitted an offer to sign a new forward in the upcoming transfer window in January, if a fresh update is to be believed.

Who are Everton linked with?

The Merseyside outfit have most recently been linked with a swoop for FC Nuremberg midfielder Can Uzun, with the hierarchy having already made an enquiry to discover what the conditions of a deal would look like at the start of next year, but he isn’t the only midfield target to have been mentioned.

In the Premier League, Manchester City’s Kalvin Phillips has been struggling to receive regular game time under Pep Guardiola so should things not improve between now and then, he could be looking to secure a move away to kickstart his career again, even if it is only on loan, with Goodison Park having been touted as a potential destination.

However, Sean Dyche’s side also appear keen to bolster their ranks in the final third, with a new name to have entered the fold being Corinthians left-winger Wesley, who has worked his way up through his club’s various youth ranks to get promoted to the first-team.

The Brazilian, who is 18 years of age, still has another four years remaining on his deal with Mano Menezes’ side (Corinthians contracts), but having impressed during his 30 senior appearances to date (Transfermarkt – Wesley statistics), he’s caught the eye of the Toffees.

Wesley to Everton transfer update

In a post for Diario De Torcedor on X, journalist Alexandre Praetzel shared a transfer update on Wesley, who is attracting significant interest from Everton.

He said: “Everton, from England, made a proposal to businessman Giuliano Bertolucci for striker Wesley, from Corinthians. Proposal of €8 million [£6m].”

Corinthians forward Wesley.

How many goals has Wesley scored?

Since the start of his career, Wesley has posted six involvements in the opposition's area (five goals and one assist) in 45 appearances, so he’s still got a bit of work to do on his finishing, but still being a teenager with the footballing world as his oyster, there’s no doubting that he could become a wonderful acquisition for the long-term future of Everton.

Wesley's Style Of Play

Likes to dribble

Gets fouled often

Likes to play long balls

Likes to cross (All data via WhoScored)

The Sao Paulo native is currently averaging 2.1 dribbles per league game for his homeland outfit (WhoScored – Wesley statistics), which shows that he loves to use his pace to take on his marker and create chances for himself and his fellow teammates in the final third, and his youthful exuberance is terrifying for defenders to deal with, in a similar style to Manchester United's Alejandro Garnacho.

In addition, Wesley is a versatile operator having been deployed in six various positions across the pitch since the start of his career, including everywhere along the frontline and even two roles in the midfield, so the talented prospect would be able to easily adapt to the manager’s demands, making this a no-brainer of a deal to pursue if the price is as low as being reported.

Rangers manager news: Update on "leading contender" Philippe Clement

Rangers look to have made significant progress in their search for a new manager, with a "leading contender" now coming to the fore in the race to take charge.

Rangers manager links

It has been an extremely busy week or so at Ibrox, with lots of work going into finding Michael Beale's successor, following his sacking earlier in the month. Interviews have taken place with some candidates while numerous different names have been thrown into the gossip about a new Rangers manager, including English trio Graham Potter, Frank Lampard and Steven Gerrard.

Meanwhile, a number of foreign coaches have also been looked at as strong choices for the job, with Philippe Clement, Pascal Jansen and Kevin Muscat all seen as possible options to replace Beale at Ibrox.

While the international break does give those high up at Rangers a little more time to work on nailing the next managerial incoming, a new update suggests that they may have found their man.

Former Monaco boss Philippe Clement.

Philippe Clement favourite for Rangers job

Taking to X on Tuesday morning, talkSPORT reporter Alex Crook provided a big Rangers manager update on Clement, claiming that he has emerged as the front-runner to replace Beale:

"TalkSPORT understands Philippe Clement is the leading contender for the Rangers job. Kevin Muscat still in the race. Won't be Scott Parker or Frank Lampard. How do Gers fans feel about it?"

This certainly suggests that it is arguably his job to lose at this point, with the 49-year-old an exciting option, having achieved a lot in his relatively short managerial career to date. Clement has won the Belgian league title on four occasions – three times with Club Brugge and once with Genk – and Monaco sporting director Paul Mitchell has hailed his approach to the game, saying of Clement's tactics:

"His profile as a modern coach, with his teams playing with great intensity and [is] daring, including on the continental stage. His ability to combine titles and the development of young players have made him one of the most prominent and successful coaches in Europe in recent years."

It doesn't look like a done deal yet for Rangers, but it is encouraging to see the club looking likely to bring in a manager who has proven himself at a good level, rather than simply being a big name in the footballing world.

The likes of Clement and Muscat have won titles and earned respect for the jobs they have done, while someone such as Lampard, for example, achieved little during spells in charge of Chelsea and Everton, and has arguably gotten jobs because of his playing career.

The hope is that Clement's arrival is confirmed sooner rather than latter, putting the issue to bed and heralding the start of an exciting new era at Ibrox, as they look to make up ground on Celtic in the Scottish Premiership title race.

Sky Germany share Jurgen Klopp update on Liverpool future

A significant update has emerged regarding the future of Jurgen Klopp at Liverpool, having been linked with a move away from the club recently.

Who has been linked with leaving Liverpool?

The Reds' impressive start to the new Premier League season has brought much-needed positivity back to the club, following a 2022/23 campaign that seemed to suck the life out of everybody concerned with them.

To have picked up 10 points from a possible 12 is a solid return, considering Liverpool have already faced Chelsea and Newcastle United away, not to mention hosting an Aston Villa side who finished in the European places last season.

Klopp's men return to action after the international break this weekend, making the trip to Wolves on Saturday lunchtime, but away from the pitch, there have been worrying rumours in recent times surrounding the futures of certain key figures.

One of those is Mohamed Salah, who saw a £150m bid from Al-Ittihad turned down by the Reds earlier this month, meaning the Egyptian will remain at Anfield for the time being at least.

Another who has been linked with a possible move away is Klopp, who has emerged as the potential next Germany manager, following the sacking of Hansi Flick over the weekend. Now, another update has dropped regarding his future.

naby-keita-liverpool-jurgen-klopp-premier-league

What's the latest on Jurgen Klopp's Liverpool future?

According to Sky Germany on X, Klopp is not interested in the prospect of managing both Liverpool and Germany at the same time.

"Jurgen Klopp would be the ideal solution for Sky users to succeed Flick. According to Sky information, a dual role is definitely out of the question for the Liverpool coach."

Klopp is a man of his word, and he has promised to see out his contract until the summer of 2026 – he will hopefully end up staying long beyond them – so it would be a huge shock if things suddenly changed now.

The Germany job is potentially something that he has always dreamed of, considering the magnitude of it and the chance to lead his country to World Cup glory, but he has unfinished business at Liverpool and is creating a new team for his 2.0 era on Merseyside.

Seeing Klopp take up a dual role possibly wouldn't work, risking him taking his eye off the ball with the Reds, so if his head was truly turned by managing Germany, he may almost be better off leaving Liverpool, even though that is something most supporters fear, but it doesn't look as if there are any concerns of that happening anytime soon.

The hope is that this interest blows over and that Klopp enjoys a great next chapter at Anfield, however, guiding his team to more trophies and cementing his reputation as one of the most influential figures in the history of the club.

His legendary status is sealed, regardless of what happens next, but he has the chance to achieve special things with a new-look side, having moved on so many former greats of the past and brought in new heroes such as Dominik Szoboszlai and Alexis Mac Allister.

Crystal Palace Eyeing Late Move For "Exciting" Zaha Replacement

Since losing Wilfried Zaha after the expiration of his contract, Crystal Palace have failed to find a replacement, leaving the likes of Eberechi Eze and Michael Olise to share the responsibility of creating the goals to secure the Eagles' Premier League status.

So far this season, they've got away with their failure in the transfer market, defeating Sheffield United on the opening day before suffering a narrow loss against Arsenal and earning a point at Brentford.

It remains to be seen just how long Roy Hodgson's side can paper over the cracks of Zaha's exit, however, and it now looks as though they could finally be targeting a replacement before the window slams shut.

What's the latest Crystal Palace transfer news?

To say that Palace have stood still would be an understatement. The Eagles have welcomed just two new additions in the form of Jefferson Lerma and Matheus Franca. And with others strengthening around them, you have to worry about their survival chances unless they make some last-minute moves before the end of the window.

One positive has been the fact that they have so far managed to keep hold of Eze and Olise, who signed a new contract at the club to end any reported interest from Chelsea.

Now, though, they must turn their attention to incomings, which is where Luis Sinisterra could come in. According to Football Transfers, Palace are weighing up a late approach to sign the Leeds United winger, who refused to play for the Yorkshire club in an attempt to depart earlier in the window.

It remains to be seen just how much those at Elland Road will demand for Sinisterra, too, given his importance to Daniel Farke's attack and, therefore, Leeds' promotion chances this season.

Should Leeds United sign Luis Sinisterra?

Welcoming Sinisterra would instantly solve Palace's Zaha problem – statistically speaking, the Colombian is more than capable of replicating the threat posed by the Selhurst Park hero.

According to FBref, Sinisterra even outperformed Zaha in certain aspects last season.

With that said, and given the fact that the Leeds winger is just 24-years-old, Palace could even be getting themselves an upgrade on Zaha in the long-term, if they push ahead and secure a deal with the Yorkshire club.

Sinisterra has certainly earned plenty of praise during his time at Leeds, too, including from Matt Kilgallon, who told BBC Radio Leeds, via Leeds Live: "He’s exciting, isn’t he? And you can see that when he’s out there, he’s going to produce something. If he gets you one on one, then probably the only outcome is that he’s getting past you.

“I can understand the fans getting excited with him, but I’d like to see him against better opposition. Very exciting though and looks like he’s settled in well. He took his goal brilliantly.”

As the window comes to an end, Palace will have to act fast if they want to sign the winger, with the Eagles simply weighing up a move as things stand.

Arsenal’s Predicted Starting 11 to Play Against Man City

This weekend, Arsenal take on Manchester City in the Community Shield in what will be the curtain-raiser for the upcoming Premier League season.

Of course, Pep Guardiola and his side won the treble last season, while Mikel Arteta's men fell just short in their title challenge.

But with all that now behind us and a new campaign to look ahead to, this meeting between last season's first and second-placed teams in the Premier League will no doubt be an interesting match-up.

Read the latest Arsenal transfer news HERE…

Football FanCast has decided to predict the starting lineups for both teams ahead of the game, which takes place at Wembley Stadium on Sunday 6th August at 4pm UK time.

Who will start for Arsenal vs Man City?

There has been plenty of speculation about the goalkeeper's position of late with the Gunners said to be closing in on a deal for Brentford's David Raya, while Matt Turner could be sold to Nottingham Forest. But with this game just a matter of days away, Aaron Ramsdale – who recently gave a brilliant interview – will almost certainly start between the sticks.

With William Saliba now fit after his injury woes at the end of last season, he'll likely start alongside Gabriel Magalhaes at centre-back, with Ben White to his side at right-back. However, Oleksandr Zinchenko has missed all of pre-season with a calf issue and remains a doubt.

With that being the case, it affords new signing Jurrien Timber the opportunity to impress in a new position – which seems a likely option for Mikel Arteta, as the former Ajax man has started in the inverted left-back role for the past two friendly matches.

In midfield, with Granit Xhaka no longer at the club, Kai Havertz will likely be asked to play that role – as he's done in pre-season – while £105m man Declan Rice will also potentially step into the team for his Arsenal debut.

Arsenal's Declan Rice

Of course, Arteta could be more cautious and look for continuity by playing Thomas Partey ahead of one of those two, but seeing as the Community Shield really is more of a glorified friendly, he may opt to experiment with his new-look midfield – although, of course, captain Martin Odegaard will be in the side to offer some on-pitch guidance to his teammates.

Bukayo Saka has had a sickness bug of late but it appears he'll be fine to start, while Gabriel Martinelli will likely play from the off in his usual role on the opposite flank.

Sadly, however, Gabriel Jesus will be out for a number of weeks as he undergoes knee surgery. This opens the door for someone else to impress in the No 9 role.

It's probably a toss-up between Eddie Nketiah and Leandro Trossard, but with the Belgian impressing more in pre-season – notably in netting twice during the 5-3 win over Barcelona – it wouldn't be a huge shock for Arteta to name him up top as he looks to out-manoeuvre Guardiola at Wembley.

Arsenal's predicted XI:

Aaron Ramsdale; Jurrien Timber, Gabriel Magalhaes, William Saliba, Ben White; Declan Rice, Kai Havertz, Martin Odegaard; Gabriel Martinelli, Leandro Trossard, Bukayo Saka

Who will start for Man City vs Arsenal?

For good measure, we may as well include a quick predicted Man City lineup for your enjoyment, too!

According to the Evening Standard, the Manchester outfit are sweating over the fitness of Kevin De Bruyne ahead of Sunday’s match, so it's unlikely he'll be rushed in.

On top of that, Nathan Ake is also a bit of a fitness doubt. However, with new signing Josko Gvardiol only just through the door, it's more likely that someone else will be asked to fill in if Ake can't make it.

Elsewhere, Guardiola must work out how to help fill the void left by Riyad Mahrez who has joined Saudi Pro League outfit

Al Ahli for a fee reportedly worth £30m. At least new signing Mateo Kovacic can likely slot straight in for Ilkay Gundogan who has joined Barcelona.

Man City's predicted XI:

Ederson; Manuel Akanji, Ruben Dias, John Stones, Kyle Walker; Mateo Kovacic, Rodri, Bernardo Silva; Jack Grealish, Erling Haaland, Phil Foden
