Arteta hit the jackpot on Arsenal "wizard" who’s now worth more than Olise

It has been another brilliant season for Arsenal this year, and while the ultimate fate of the Premier League is now in Manchester City's hands, the Gunners look set to challenge for some time to come.

The North Londoner's rejuvenation has been in large part thanks to the combined efforts of manager Mikel Arteta and Sporting Director Edu Gaspar.

The pair have flipped the script on the club's history of lacklustre transfer dealings by overseeing successful signing after successful signing in the last few years.

Martin Odegaard, Declan Rice, and Ben White have all been transformational additions to the team, but another signing deserves just as much praise, and his recent valuation is proof as much.

Leandro Trossard's Arsenal career

The player in question is Belgium international Leandro Trossard, who signed for the Gunners from Brighton & Hove Albion midway through last season.

While it can often take signings a little while to settle into their new team and surroundings, the Maasmechelen-born winger looked at home from his first appearance.

By the end of the season, the 29-year-old had provided ten assists and scored one goal in just 22 appearances – 11 of which were starts – meaning he was averaging a goal involvement every other game from the word go.

His most impressive performance came away to Fulham in mid-March, as in just his sixth start as an Arsenal player, he provided a hat-trick of assists in the first half to essentially win his side the game before the interval.

At the end of the season, the right-footed "wizard," as described by journalist Charlie Haffenden, had the second-most assists of any Arsenal player across all competitions, which is truly remarkable considering the significant headstart his teammates had over him.

This season, seemingly bored with being the provider last year, the brilliantly talented Belgian has shifted his focus to scoring goals, and as things stand, he has found the back of the net 16 times in 44 appearances while still picking up two assists for good measure.

In all, Trossard has been an unequivocal success at Arsenal, and the impressive finances behind the deal only make his impact more remarkable.

Leandro Trossard's valuation in 2024

Arsenal paid Brighton just £27m to sign the 28-year-old winger in a deal that was generally seen as a fallback option after missing out on the far pricier Mykhailo Mudryk to Chelsea.

The 5 foot 8 attacker was also given a reasonable wage of £90k-per-week, and so there was little expectation that he would go on to have the sort of impact he has.

Yet, a year and a half later, the 33-capped international's performances have been so impressive that even though he'll turn 30 this year – four years past his peak, according to The Athletic – his valuation has actually increased.

According to the CIES Football Observatory, the Arsenal winger is now worth €40m, which is around £34m, or £7m more than he cost the Gunners last January.

To put that into context, as per the same site, he is worth just as much as Ben White and David Raya. Across the Premier League, interestingly, it is also €10m – £9m – more than the valuation of Crystal Palace's tremendously exciting Michael Olise, which just goes to show how impressive the performances of the former Genk man have been.

Olise has been nothing short of exceptional this term too, scoring nine goals and assisting four during an injury-disrupted period that's seen him feature just 17 times. Still, that's been enough to link him with a move to Arsenal in recent times.

Crystal Palace star Michael Olise.

Ultimately, while the signings of Rice and Havertz are likely to have a more significant impact on the club's long-term trajectory, the decision to sign Trossard last season was a genius one, and his recent valuation is yet more evidence of that fact. Just imagine if they get Olise too.

Man Utd's late collapse puts 'an awful lot of pressure' on Erik ten Hag as Gary Neville slams Red Devils over loss to Brighton

Gary Neville believes Manchester United's late collapse against Brighton has put "an awful lot of pressure" on Erik ten Hag.

United were beaten 2-1 by BrightonJoao Pedro's late winner stunned the Red DevilsNeville slammed Ten Hag for lacklustre first-halfWHAT HAPPENED?

United's hopes of securing at least a point were dashed in the dying moments of the match, as Brighton's Joao Pedro netted a late winner deep into stoppage time. The goal came after United had managed to level the score in the second half through Amad Diallo, who cancelled out an earlier strike by former United player Danny Welbeck.

AdvertisementGetty Images SportWHAT NEVILLE SAID

Neville, in his post-match analysis for , did not hold back in his assessment of United's performance. “A really depressing end to the game,” he remarked. “I thought a draw would have been half acceptable, but to lose the game puts an awful lot of pressure on Erik ten Hag and on towards the game next week against Liverpool.”

Reflecting on the first half, Neville pointed out United's struggles without a recognised centre-forward and highlighted Ten Hag's tactical misstep that potentially cost United valuable time and momentum in the game.

"I think the first half of the game, I don't think anyone was surprised,” Neville observed. “It's very difficult to play football without a centre-forward. You need a focal point up front, and he corrected that at half-time by bringing [Joshua] Zirkzee on, but you've already wasted 45 minutes in the match, and that's a problem.”

THE BIGGER PICTURE

Neville also hit out at United's defending in the lead-up to Brighton's winning goal as Pedro was left completed unmarked in the far post.

"In the second half, and the first goal was poor defensively, but that last goal I've just watched it, when you clear from a corner you've got to still defend as you would the second phase of a corner," Neville observed.

"In particular if you watch Casemiro it looks to me like he leaves his position at the back post and goes back into central midfield but it then leaves acres of space in the back zone. A lack of concentration, a lack of focus, and it does put some pressure on them."

As United prepare to face Liverpool, Neville’s words serve as a stark reminder of the challenges ahead for Ten Hag and his squad. The upcoming fixture against their historic rivals could prove pivotal in determining the direction of United's season. With expectations high and pressure mounting, Ten Hag will need to address the issues that have plagued his team in the early stages of the campaign if they are to bounce back and secure a positive result at Old Trafford on September 1.

Rangers hit gold on ace who’s worth more than Goldson & Souttar in 2024

Glasgow Rangers approach the final eight games of the season with the Premiership title in their grasp.

All they have to do is win their remaining league fixtures and a first title since the 2020/21 season is theirs. Of course, this is easier said than done, especially as they face Celtic in two of their final eight games.

Philippe Clement has given his team plenty of confidence, however, and they won't be fazed by this Celtic side who have struggled in spells under Brendan Rodgers.

The Gers have scored 67 league goals this term, seven fewer than Celtic, yet they have conceded a league best of just 17 goals.

Much of their success this term has been built on a reliable backline and this could prove crucial in the coming weeks, no doubt about that.

Jack Butland has been an inspired signing, to say the least, keeping 23 clean sheets across his 47 matches in all competitions, conceding just 37 goals in the process.

Jack Butland

The centre-back pairing of John Souttar and Connor Goldson has thrived in recent months and the duo have become Clement’s first-choice options at the heart of the defence.

Connor Goldson and John Souttar’s Rangers statistics

Souttar endured a tough first season at Ibrox, missing a large chunk of the season due to an ankle injury, but he has become the first choice now that he is fit and healthy.

In 22 Premiership appearances, the Scot has an 88% pass success rate, kept nine clean sheets, made 3.5 clearances per game and won a staggering 75% of his total duels contested – which is 5.8 per game – showing how impressive he is with regard to one on one battles against opposition players.

His strength in the air is also impressive, winning 77% of his aerial duels during the current season, showing Clement that he can become a mainstay in the Rangers starting XI.

Goldson is an excellent partner for Souttar, with the duo playing off each other well and having great chemistry. The Englishman is also a wonderful passer of the ball, holding an 87% pass success rate, along with making 1.4 tackles, three clearances and recovering 5.6 balls per game.

Not only that, but his physical strength has allowed him to win 67% of his total duels this term, proving that him and Souttar are an extremely tough backline to crack.

John Souttar

Going forward, keeping the pair fit will be of major importance to Clement, especially if he aims to add a league title and a Scottish Cup to his League Cup success from earlier this season.

How much Souttar and Goldson are worth

Despite both players performing at close to their best since the turn of the year, this is not reflected by their current market values.

Indeed, Souttar is currently worth just €0.7m (£600k) according to Football Transfers, which places him as the club’s second lowest-valued centre-back.

Connor Goldson

Goldson, despite being at his peak, is also valued lower than expected. The 31-year-old is currently worth just €2.5m (£2.1m) and it is unlikely a side would make an offer of more than that considering he has just two years left on his contract.

Going by inflation, however, Rangers sold a centre-back more than 15 years ago who was worth more than Souttar and Goldson combined – Carlos Cuellar.

How much Rangers signed Carlos Cuellar for

Following a turbulent 2006/07 season – which was only saved due to the late great Walter Smith steadying the ship – the summer of 2007 was an important one for the club.

There was plenty of transfer activity occurring, with players departing and arriving in equal measure.

In total, 13 new signings arrived at Ibrox, among them Daniel Cousin, Steven Naismith, and DaMarcus Beasley, although it was Cuellar who looked the most interesting signing.

Carlos Cuellar for Rangers

The defender cost just £2m from Spanish side Osasuna, having impressed for the La Liga outfit in a UEFA Cup tie the season prior against the Light Blues.

The Spaniard proved to be an inspired signing and acquitted himself well to Scottish – and indeed continental – football over the course of the season.

He played a total of 65 games for the Gers during his solitary campaign in Glasgow, forming a key component of the side which would remain in contention for a quadruple heading into May.

Unfortunately, they would lose out on both the league title and the UEFA Cup, finishing runners-up to Celtic and Zenit St Petersburg respectively, although they would win the League Cup and Scottish Cup.

Cuellar’s excellent form, especially over the closing months, would soon attract interest from afar as it appeared his stay in Glasgow may be shorter than anticipated.

How much Carlos Cuellar is worth in 2024 money

Aston Villa came in with a bid of £7.8m for Cuellar during the summer of 2008 and, due to Rangers' declining financial situation, it was accepted by Smith as a means to bolster their bank balance.

Signing a player for £2m before selling him for nearly £8m just a year later is excellent business, and judging by inflation, it is clear the Gers hit the jackpot with the Spaniard.

Indeed, in 2024 – with Totally Money having adjusted for inflation over the years – Cuellar would now be worth an eye-watering £24m in today’s market.

Not only is this worth more than both Souttar and Goldson combined, but it could well be worth more than their entire defence, showing just how good Cuellar was during his time at the Ibrox side.

The defender failed to hit the highs he did during his time at Rangers, although he did make 121 appearances for Villa, before having spells at Sunderland and Norwich during his spell in England.

Smith certainly knew how to get the best value for a player and the money raised by his sale went on to help the club in more ways than one.

There is no doubt he was an excellent defender, with his £24m valuation in 2024 certainly evidence of that fact.

Journalist says Rangers will now sell "quality player" at huge Ibrox loss

Whilst the majority of Rangers' focus is transfixed on one of the most dramatic Scottish Premiership title races of the last 10 years, they look increasingly likely to green-light a sale in the summer transfer window.

Rangers transfer news

The Gers' late 3-3 draw against Old Firm rivals Celtic was as dramatic as it could have been to ensure that the title is still in their hands as we approach the finish line this season. Now, as things stand, Rangers sit one point adrift of Celtic with one game in hand with potentially even more twists and turns to come.

£25,000-a-week player admits he wants to sign for Rangers

He is set to be a free agent soon.

ByHenry Jackson Apr 7, 2024

Whilst the action takes place at Ibrox, however, those in Glasgow have already turned their attention towards Philippe Clement's first summer transfer window in charge. Already, the Gers have been linked with a permanent move for Fabio Silva, who is currently on loan from Wolverhampton Wanderers, and a similar deal for Oscar Cortes. Both players have impressed on loan and a permanent move would be more than deserved this summer.

Fabio Silva

Alas, even if Rangers win the Scottish Premiership this season, departures may also be in the headlines, which could include a player who only arrived last summer.

According to journalist Pete O'Rourke of Football Insider, Rangers are ready to sell Sam Lammers at a "huge" loss this summer amid interest from current loan club FC Utrecht. This comes after recent reports indicated that the Scottish giants are ready to accept offers for the forward who only arrived last summer for £3.5m from Atalanta.

Set to suffer a loss, Rangers will more than likely look back on their deal for Lammers as one to forget and perhaps one that will forever sum up the Gers' failure under Michael Beale. Starting fresh ever since with Clement, the former AS Monaco boss is clearly in a ruthless mood.

"Superb" Lammers needs permanent exit

It's a shame that things just haven't worked out for Lammers at Rangers. The 26-year-old arrived with plenty of potential in a move that received high praise from Heerenveen boss Kees van Wonderen, who said:

What you get from him as a player is first and foremost a superb work ethic. He’s a left-footed striker and is good technically.

"What you get from him as a player is first and foremost a superb work ethic. He’s a left-footed striker and is good technically. He knows how to play an opponent and is a very clever guy. I can see him being a big success in Scotland. Rangers have signed a quality player who can make a big impact.”

That impact never came, however, and Lammers was forced to find his feet on loan at Utrecht instead where he has scored seven goals in 13 appearances. Following a solid loan spell, it remains to be seen just how much Rangers will get for their forward in a sale that seems destined to end in a financial loss for those at Ibrox.

Clement and co will simply be hoping to be too busy with title celebrations to worry about Lammers' likely summer departure.

Chelsea could save millions with academy starlet who "can’t stop scoring"

As seems to be the case more often than not for Chelsea in recent times, the club seem to be failing to live up to their high standards as one of England's so-called 'Big-Six.'

The west London club have spent record fees on both permanent and temporary transfers since Todd Boehly took over from former owner, Roman Abramovich.

Despite splashing out over £1b on players since his takeover, it seems as if Chelsea have found themselves worse off than when Abramovich was their owner – far from the outcome that Boehly would have wanted when he bought the Blues over 18 months ago.

The club find themselves residing in mid-table, winning just two of their last five top-flight games, with such woes largely due to the problems they have suffered in front of goal as, at the time of writing, they have only managed to score a total of 42 goals in 25 Premier League games.

Chelsea co-owner Todd Boehly

Although numerous attacking additions were made over the summer, with the likes of Cristopher Nkunku and Nicolas Jackson both joining the club, they haven't performed to the standards expected of them.

Granted, Nkunku has been injured for a total of 27 games for the Blues this season, but, after coming off the back of his most prolific domestic campaign for RB Leipzig last season, he was expected to perform better.

Jackson, on the other hand, hasn't missed any games due to injury and has almost cemented his place in Chelsea's starting Xi.

That said, he himself hasn't had the best of seasons and really needs to improve in front of goal if Chelsea wish to regain entry to the Champions League.

Nicolas Jackson's season in numbers

The 22-year-old joined the Blues in the summer for a fee worth around £31.8m and was expected to set the Premier League alight with his speed and agility.

Much like Nkunku, Jackson joined the club after his most prolific professional season with Villareal. The striker scored a total of 13 goals across all competitions and was the perfect partner for veteran, Gerard Moreno.

Throughout the 2023/24 campaign, Jackson has played a key role within the squad and has played a total of 27 games thus far. The vast majority of his goals (seven) have come in the Premier League, but almost half of those came in one game, when the attacker bagged his first Chelsea hat-trick against rivals Tottenham Hotspur.

Although he managed to slot three past a nine-man Spurs side, his performances across the rest of the season have been somewhat unconvincing.

So much so that Chelsea new boy, Cole Palmer, has been deployed as a striker this season. According to Transfermarkt, in six of the 29 games that the Manchester City academy graduate has played in this season, he has been deployed as a striker or false nine

Prior to joining the Blues, Palmer had only been used as the focal point of the attack once in his senior career, with the previous examples coming whilst he was still within the youth ranks of the Cityzens.

Although Palmer himself is having something of a breakout season, he can't be entrusted to carry Mauricio Pochettino's team on his own just yet.

Hence, why players such as Jackson need to step up and help out in attack, yet if the form of the Senegal international continues as it has been, he could well be sold in the near future.

Pochettino's side have already been linked with Victor Osimhen from Napoli as a potential future target to aid them in the attacking department.

In The Pipeline

Football FanCast's In the Pipeline series aims to uncover the very best youth players in world football.

However, as Jackson is one of the only natural strikers at the club at this moment in time who isn't absent due to injury, Chelsea may have to look in their youth ranks to turn their fortunes around.

If they were to do this, there is one player in particular who springs to mind, who could be exactly what Chelsea are looking for.

Ronnie Stutter's record at youth level

Much like most of the top six clubs in England's top flight, Chelsea have a stellar academy and have produced plenty of Premier League talent who have gone on to have long careers in one of the world's most difficult leagues.

Players such as John Terry, Mason Mount and Reece James have all graduated from Chelsea's academy and have had strong senior careers thus far.

It now looks as if they have yet another next-level talent on their hands in Ronnie Stutter. The striker is just 19 years old and "can't stop scoring" for Chelsea's U21s, as per journalist Antonio Mango.

Ronnie-stutter-chelsea

The promising striker was signed by the Blues in 2019 from fellow Londoners, West Ham United, in order to try and bolster their attacking options in their youth ranks.

After coming off a solid 2021/22 campaign, in which he scored 13 goals in 16 appearances, he suffered recurring injuries which halted his growth and performances.

The youngster has played a total of 13 games for the Blues' youth side and has managed to score nine goals during that time. The eye-catching marksman has even managed to provide his team with an assist.

The 2023/24 season has been Stutter's first season with the Under-21s, and he looks to have settled right, having even managed to score on his Under-21 debut while bagging five goals in August alone.

Now, due to the recent poor form of Jackson in front of the goal, Pochettino could well look towards Stutter to provide the team with something different.

His addition to the first-team squad could help the club finally end their search for a striker. As aforementioned, many of Chelsea's senior team members have come from within, with the likes of James and Conor Gallagher being some recent examples.

If Pochettino decides to take the risk and play the forward over the likes of Jackson, he may unearth Chelsea's next gem and save the club from spending more money than what they have already done.

Kapil Dev, Anshuman Gaekwad resign from BCCI Cricket Advisory Committee too

Less than a week after Shanta Rangswamy stepped down from the BCCI’s Cricket Advisory Committee (CAC), the other two members of the ad-hoc panel – Kapil Dev and Anshuman Gaekwad – have stepped down too. The resignations follow the notice of conflict of interest served to the three by the BCCI ethics officer Justice (Retd) DK Jain, who acted on a complaint filed by Sanjeev Gupta, a life member of the Madhya Pradesh Cricket Association.Kapil sent in his resignation on Tuesday to the Committee of Administrators (CoA) and BCCI chief executive officer Rahul Johri, while Gaekwad followed suit today.”It was a pleasure to be part of the ad-hoc CAC to specifically select the Head Coach for the Men’s Cricket Team,” Kapil was quoted as saying in his communication by the . “I hereby tender my resignation from the same with immediate effect.”The development is likely to put the BCCI ethics officer in a spot. In his notice to the three CAC members, Justice Jain had asked for a response by October 10. He could not be reached to ascertain what his next step would be: whether to pass an ex-parte order or dispose of Gupta’s conflict complaint. In case Justice Jain goes ahead and holds the Kapil-led CAC guilty of conflict, the obvious questions that will follow is what happens to the appointment of Ravi Shastri as the Indian men’s team’s head coach, which the panel had decided on? As things stand, Shastri is on a two-year contract until the 2021 T20 World Cup.Incidentally, before it convened to conduct the interviews for the various coaching staff appointments in August, all three CAC members had given written undertakings to the BCCI: Kapil had confirmed that he owns a company that supplies floodlights to various state associations and that he is one of the founding directors of the new Indian Cricketers’ Association (ICA); Gaekwad, similarly, mentioned his son’s cricket academy and that he is also a director at the ICA; Rangaswamy is understood to have said there were no conflicts of interest in her case, although she was an ICA director too. [Last week she stepped down from that position too.]The three-member CoA was split on whether the CAC should be given the nod to carry out the interviews. While Vinod Rai and Ravindra Thodge felt there was no direct conflict, the third member, Diana Edulji, had said that Justice Jain was best placed to take the final call. She was overruled.Throughout its brief tenure, various questions have been asked of the CAC after it came into existence in controversial circumstances.Last December, once the BCCI had opted not to renew interim woman’s head coach Ramesh Powar’s contract, the CoA, then comprising only Rai and Edulji, had differed on the next step. The CoA had initially asked the previous CAC comprising Sachin Tendulkar, Sourav Ganguly and VVS Laxman to pick a new woman’s coach. But when that panel asked for time, Rai approved an ad-hoc CAC of Kapil, Gaekwad and Rangaswamy. Edulji called the appoinment “illegal” and argued with Rai, saying the BCCI constitution did not provide the option for an ad-hoc CAC. She was overruled on that occasion too, and former India batsman WV Raman got the job.Edulji then said Raman, who was serving as the batting coach at the National Cricket Academy in Bengaluru at the time, should be given the head coach role in an interim capacity before the previous CAC could reassemble and appoint a permanent coach. The appointment was, however, made official, and calling the process fraught, Edulji called for Justice Jain to look into the matter. But the ethics officer has not delivered his verdict yet.

Liam Dawson fifty steers Hampshire to safety of a draw after Ollie Pope double

The visitors looked in trouble after Amar Virdi’s three wickets reduced them to 175 for 5 shortly before tea, still 37 away from an innings defeat

ECB Reporters Network21-Aug-2019Liam Dawson’s fourth half-century of the season steered Hampshire to the safety of a draw on the final day of their County Championship fixture with Surrey at The Oval. The visitors looked in trouble after Amar Virdi’s three wickets reduced them to 175 for 5 shortly before tea, still 37 away from an innings defeat. But Dawson, who was 65 not out having scored a century against Surrey in the Royal London Cup earlier in the season, proved their nemesis again, batting for two hours to take Hampshire to 253 for 5 in company with debutant Harry Came, who remained not out 23 as they avoided defeat.Earlier, Ollie Pope had completed a maiden County Championship double century to set up the hosts’ morning declaration before hot-footing it to Headingly as England cover should Jason Roy be ruled out of the third Test with possible concussion.Surrey began the day 123 ahead and in need of quick runs. Skipper Ben Foakes was bowled through the gate before the go button could be pressed, but Pope continued serenely onto his double hundred from 323 balls with 19 fours.Rikki Clarke hoisted Dawson for a huge straight six to provide the necessary acceleration before being adjudged lbw to Fidel Edwards, who claimed 5 for 125, though replays suggested the ball would have missed leg-stump.The declaration came soon afterwards at 579 for 7 with Pope 221 not out, which left Hampshire 212 in arrears and with 40 minutes to negotiate before lunch. The hosts spurned a chance when Ryan Patel dropped Felix Organ at third slip after he was on eight, but they made the breakthrough with the last ball before the interval, Virdi having Ian Holland caught down the leg side by Foakes. There was more encouragement soon after the resumption when Clarke pinned England hopeful James Vince in front for just a single to leave Hampshire 39 for 2.It was clear the visitors’ intent was to play positively in a bid to wipe out their arrears and get in front. However, Sam Northeast took that intention to extreme lengths with a string of streaky shots down through third man and ultimately it proved his undoing when he slashed one from Morne Morkel to Scott Borthwick at slip.Organ meanwhile, was making the most of his earlier reprieve, racing to 50 in 55 balls with a six and eight fours, ending up with 77. He looked increasingly confident, but with a second century in as many matches beckoning he, like Northeast, contributed to his own downfall, giving Virdi the charge and missing the ball to be stumped by Foakes. The same combination would account for Rilee Rossouw before the end of the session, though the South African should probably reflect on why he was playing a needless sweep shot so close to an interval.Hampshire were wobbling but Dawson dug in, finding an ally in Came, who showed great composure for a man making his first appearance six days shy of his 21st birthday as a concussion replacement for Aneurin Donald, who was injured in the field on day three.Dawson’s 50 came in 63 balls to wipe out the arrears and the pair shared a half-century stand in the game’s dying embers.

"Incredible" manager leading race to replace Roy Hodgson at Crystal Palace

A Crystal Palace managerial front-runner has now emerged, should the club decide to part ways with Roy Hodgson, according to one reliable reporter.

Roy Hodgson’s Crystal Palace future

The Eagles suffered a heavy 5-0 defeat to Arsenal in the Premier League on Saturday, leaving the club five points above the relegation zone. There was a staged protest from members of the travelling support during the game, with a large banner held up in the away end reading:

“Wasted potential. On and off the pitch, weak decisions. Taking us backwards."

All confirmed Premier League done deals: January transfer window 2024

With the January transfer window coming towards its conclusion, FFC has all the info for tracking your club’s winter transfer activity.

ByLuke Randall Feb 1, 2024

Talking after the loss, Hodgson was asked about his future and if he had the support from the Palace board, to which he said:

“That's a question for them, isn't it? But if you're asking me if I've ever felt a lack of support from them, then the answer is no. I think they've been good, but I mean now in [the] situation that you're obviously discussing, in this scenario you're envisaging, that's going to be a question for them.

“When a team isn't doing as well as it should be doing, someone needs to be held responsible, and that's the manager.”

The Daily Mail claimed after the game at the Emirates that Palace, and by extension chairman Steve Parish and sporting director Dougie Freedman, are identifying replacements for Hodgson due to their poor run of form, with Steve Cooper and Julen Lopetegui two possible candidates. Now, a new update has emerged regarding one of the two targets.

Steve Cooper in pole position for Crystal Palace job

According to Rahman Osman of London World, Cooper is the manager who is leading the race to take over from Hodgson. The 44-year-old is ready to return to the dugout after leaving Nottingham Forest last month, and Palace could be tested with their backing of Hodgson until the summer due to their current form.

Cooper, who plays an attacking 4-3-3 system, took Forest back into the Premier League and kept the Reds up in his first season before leaving last month.

The Welshman has been on Palace’s radar for some time now and was even linked with the job when he was still at the City Ground, so some may not see it as a surprise that he’s in pole position to take over from Hodgson. Former Palace boss Sam Allardyce has previously praised Cooper, hailing him for the “incredible” job he did in the Midlands.

"What becomes difficult in terms of building team spirit is having too many players. Most managers don’t have enough. What they don’t have enough of is quality, and what they don’t want is quantity.

“Steve is one of the only managers to say he has too many players. Dealing with that can distract your focus. You want to keep them all involved and use them if you can and see what they’ve got, but ultimately, it’s a very tough decision. Steve has done an incredible job dealing with these issues as well as getting good results.”
