Wolves sold amazing Cunha upgrade for just £1m, now he’s worth 6700% more

Wolverhampton Wanderers may have sold both Max Kilman and Pedro Neto during the summer transfer window, yet they received nearly £100m for the pair in the process, clearly signifying good business by Gary O’Neil.

Regardless of how well the duo perform at their new clubs, the Old Gold now have plenty of funds in the bank to strengthen, with both transfers clearly inevitable.

Wolves manager Gary O'Neil

It hasn’t always been like this at Molineux, however, as the club have sold certain players for peanuts, only for them to shine elsewhere.

Thriving Portuguese playmaker Pedro Goncalves is a perfect example.

How much Wolves sold Pedro Goncalves for

After spending just two seasons at Wolves, making only one senior appearance in the process, the club sold Goncalves to Portuguese side Famalicao for a fee in the region of £1m.

Pedro Goncalves of Sporting CP

On the surface, it looked as though it was easy money for the club to bring in considering his lack of opportunity in the starting XI, but the previous few years have shown that Wolves have messed up badly on the current Sporting Club star.

Pedro Goncalves’ market value in 2024

Due to his form for Sporting, plenty of clubs were keen on signing the attacking midfielder during the summer transfer window.

According to O Jogo (via Sport Witness), the Portuguese club were looking for offers of €80m (£67m) or more if any club stood a chance of signing him during the summer.

With Wolves selling him for just £1m, this represents a monumental failure by the Midlands side, especially considering how much they might have received should they have given him a chance.

Indeed, the price tag placed on his head by the club meant his value has risen by a staggering 6700% more over the course of five years.

Where Are They Now

Your star player or biggest flop has left the club but what are they doing in the present day? This article is part of Football FanCast's Where Are They Now series.

How Pedro Goncalves now compares to Matheus Cunha

Since joining Sporting, Goncalves has registered a remarkable 135 goal contributions – 80 goals and 55 assists – in just 183 matches.

Aston Villa transfer target Pedro Goncalves in action for Sporting.

Last season saw the 26-year-old help power his club to another league title, scoring 18 goals while grabbing 17 assists. Compare this to Cunha, who scored 14 times and chipped in with eight assists, and it is clear who is better in front of goal.

Goncalves also created 18 big chances, averaged two key passes per game and 2.8 shots per game in the Portuguese top flight last term.

Cunha, on the other hand, created only seven big chances, averaged 0.9 key passes and 2.3 shots per game, yet more evidence of how much more effective Goncalves was in the final third.

Hailed as an “astonishing” player by journalist Henry Winter in 2023, Goncalves has taken his game to the next level since joining Sporting, with the club winning two league titles over the previous four seasons.

There is no doubt that Wolves seriously fumbled with the sale of the 26-year-old, especially considering how much he is worth in the market today, something which they will rue for the foreseeable future.

John Simpson and David Payne head west as Middlesex's batting heads south once more

With the charming eccentricity that is entirely characteristic of county cricket, the College Ground boasts a number of signposts, none of which are much use. Instead of telling spectators the distances to splendid nearby villages like North Cerney or Elkstone, they inform them how far it is to the six traditional Test grounds. Mileages are also indicated for more distant destinations: Motera (India), 4329, for example, and even Cheltonians might consider the latter a little ambitious for a half-holiday jaunt. But in the school attended by Edward Wilson, one of Scott’s men, the simple mention of such locations is probably thought an inspiration. The omission of Cardiff from the list, however, appeared an unfortunate oversight on the second morning of this game, when both John Simpson and David Payne received utterly unexpected calls to the England squad that will play Pakistan at Sophia Gardens on Thursday.Meanwhile the two teams contesting the match followed the advice of Winston Churchill and kept buggering on. Such slightly coarse language may seem inappropriate in these classical surroundings – Churchill himself used “plodding” when ladies were present – but it is nevertheless fair enough when applied to a game thrown into slight disarray by the isolation of the national team. Dominic Goodman replaced Payne in Gloucestershire’s side and James Bracey assumed the captaincy. Middlesex’s Robbie White took over the gloves from Simpson, whose overdue call-up was greeted with particular pleasure from those who suspected this very fine cricketer’s chance had gone.In truth Simpson’s colleagues missed his batting rather more than his keeping. For if we may civilise Churchillian phraseology, Gloucestershire’s cricketers went about their business with far greater resolution than their opponents, gaining a first-innings lead of 147 and then extending that to 345 by the close. It is a quintessentially match-winning position and one that has been achieved without the skipper, Chris Dent, who has a broken finger, and Ryan Higgins, whose wife gave birth at 4.48am – how can they be so precise? – on Monday morning. This day’s play – quite possibly the whole game – hinged on the 10.3 overs that bridged the luncheon interval. At the beginning of that period Middlesex were 76 for 2 having lost the debutant Josh de Caires, who was leg before to Matt Taylor in the fourth over of the day, and Stevie Eskinazi, whose authentic leg glance off Goodman was athletically caught by a diving Bracey. The only other noteworthy incident early in the day saw Gloucestershire penalised five runs after Dan Worrall had hurled the ball back at Eskinazi and appeared to hit the batter on the back.An hour later even more painful injuries followed for Middlesex who lost their last eight wickets for 25 runs with the final seven batsmen falling either leg before wicket or caught in the keeper-and-slip cordon. Gloucestershire’s bowling was excellent. Having failed to remove Eskinazi by a method that would have earned him an appointment with his Housemaster in this school’s distant past, Worrall returned at the College Lawn End and employed more conventional methods to dismiss both Robson, who was bowled between bat and pad, and Daryl Mitchell, whose maiden first-class innings for Middlesex lasted one ball. The New Zealander clearly thought he was too far down the wicket to be give leg before but replays indicated otherwise and Graham Lloyd’s finger, which had earlier been wagged in Worrall’s direction, now brought the bowler joy illimited. White, who a few hours earlier may have been looking forward to a gentle day of squeezing sanitiser bottles, prevented the hat-trick.Related

  • Surrey rolled for 72 then falter in follow-on as Keith Barker claims key scalps

Yet that was as far as Middlesex’s resistance extended. On the resumption the visitors folded up their tents and disappeared like the bedouin in the night. Faced with confident seam bowling on a typical Cheltenham pitch that rewards excellence but offers no exculpation for carelessness, six Middlesex batsmen were sent packing in less than half an hour. Peter Handscomb received a fine ball from Taylor and nicked it to Bracey; Martin Andersson attempted the careless drive typical of a man desperate to find form. The non-specialist batsmen were swept away by Taylor and Tom Price, the latter taking his second, third and fourth first-class wickets in 17 balls. Middlesex have now been bowled out for less than 175 in eight of their 15 completed first-class innings this summer.Gloucestershire’s cricketers, by contrast, for all that they lost their last two Championship matches by an innings, are enjoying themselves hugely this season and cricket is so revelatory of character that their pleasure is evident in almost all they do. Miles Hammond’s 46 included a lovely pick up over square leg off Ethan Bamber and an equally fine cover drive in the next over. George Scott, Tom Lace and Glenn Phillips were all dismissed for single figures but those reverses were more than countered by the batting of Bracey, whose 88 included four fours in one Mitchell over, and Jack Taylor who clearly had licence to pillage and made 40 off 29 balls before he edged Mitchell to White. The New Zealander celebrated that wicket with the enthusiasm of a man putting his bins out but rather more joy attended the dismissal of Bracey, who was caught at point by Eskinazi eight balls before poor light ended the day’s play.Neither of those last two wickets affected the price of fish very much. The two sessions that comprised Gloucestershire’s second innings were watched with quiet satisfaction by paying spectators and members, most of whom were sitting at the Chapel End. For their part the Middlesex players might enquire whether Henry Prothero’s most famous piece of architecture is open to the public. One fears their chances in this match have entered the Land of Lazarus.

Wolves make contact to sign £230,000-p/w ace once compared to Lionel Messi

Wolverhampton Wanderers have made a late enquiry to sign a new winger to replace Pedro Neto after the Portuguese ace completed a move to Chelsea last week, it has emerged.

Wolves get off to losing start

Gary O'Neil's side were handed a tough Premier League opening day assignment as they travelled to north London to take on last season's title challengers Arsenal, and the result largely went as expected.

The Gunners scored in each half to secure all three points courtesy of a 2-0 win, but it wasn't a game without encouragement for Wolves. Despite losing Neto to Chelsea just days before the new campaign kicked off, new striker Jorgen Strand Larsen was impressive and saw a headed effort brilliantly saved by David Raya, while Matheus Cunha will feel he should have done better when he fired straight at Arsenal's no.1.

But it remains clear that more reinforcements are needed for the Old Gold this summer, with O'Neil sending a warning to those above him about just that when quizzed on potential additions.

“No real update on names linked, it’s a ruthless league and we have an opportunity to be really clever and get some stuff done, the next 2 weeks is big for us…you take £100m last summer, you take £100m this summer, you can’t stand still,” he explained.

One of the names linked has been Ajax forward Carlos Forbs, who is thought to be open to a potential move to Molineux. Now, the Old Gold have been linked with another winger who could provide some much-needed impetus to their frontline.

Wolves enquire for winger once compared to Lionel Messi

That comes with Wolves having reported made an enquiry over the possibility of signing Barcelona outcast Ansu Fati on loan for the upcoming campaign.

The Spaniard took Lionel Messi's no.10 shirt at the Camp Nou and was widely considered the heir to the Argentine's throne for the Blaugrana and was compared to the Argentine, only for injuries to derail his fledgling career.

Still just 21 years old, the Spaniard spent last season on loan in the Premier League with Brighton, making 27 appearances for Roberto De Zerbi's side but often used from the substitutes bench as he battled a thigh injury.

Now back at Barcelona, he has been made surplus to requirements as the Catalan side look to offload his £230,000-per-week wages, and reports in Spain have revealed that O'Neil's side have lodged an enquiry to sign him on loan, though they face competition from the likes of Fenerbahce, Sevilla and Marseille.

Though a deal may seem far-fetched on the face of it, it is worth remembering that Fati is represented by super agent Jorge Mendes, who has a strong working relationship with Wolves and has sent no shortage of stars to Molineux since their promotion to the Premier League.

When fit, he is still a game-changer, with ex-Barcelona teammate Eric Garcia hailing him as a "magic" attacker back in 2022.

“Ansu is one of these players that are born with that talent and that magic", he explained. “Let’s hope that the injuries respect him, because in 20 minutes he’s demonstrated how he can help this team."

Still just 21, a loan move could help him flourish if he can overcome his injuries.

Ricky Ponting: Not bowling Ashwin out 'probably a mistake on our behalf'

R Ashwin bowled the seventh, ninth and 11th overs of the chase. He conceded 14 runs and no boundaries. He had two left-hand batters to bowl at. Neither of them enjoys a favourable match-up against Ashwin. The dew was setting in, and it would have been difficult to get Ashwin back later if the ball had got wet or if he had right-hand batters to bowl to. Rishabh Pant, though, went to Marcus Stoinis, who conceded 15 in that over, and Ashwin ended the night without bowling his quota in what turned out to be a close defeat. The move didn’t make much sense to those watching nor to the Delhi Capitals coach Ricky Ponting. “That’s certainly something that we will talk about when I get a chance to sit down with the team,” Ponting said at the post-match press conference. “He had bowled beautifully. Three overs, none for 14. Hadn’t even conceded a boundary. Look he had a disappointing game in game one, but he has worked really hard in the last few days to make sure he adjusted and got things right in this game. I thought he bowled beautifully tonight. Probably a mistake on our behalf, and something we will be talking about later on.”Something else that Ponting and the Capitals will be talking about is the sheer number of “slot balls” they gave to Chris Morris in the last two overs, who in turn hit four sixes to run away with a game that had looked like it was in the Capitals’ bag. Until the start of the 15th over of the second innings, there hadn’t been a single six hit in the game, but the Rajasthan Royals hit seven in the last 4.4 overs to make it home.Despite conceding only 14 from his three overs, R Ashwin didn’t bowl out•BCCI

Morris might have missed out on a couple of these when the Royals lost to the Punjab Kings chasing 222, but he managed to connect enough of them to sink the Capitals.”We probably gave him a few too many easy balls, a few too many slot balls if you like,” Ponting said. “The length wasn’t quite where it needed to be. If you look at the replay of the game, if you bowled a reasonable yorker, he didn’t score off them. If it was back of a length, sort of, above stump high, he didn’t get hold of them either, especially with pace on the ball. We talked about how to bowl to him, but the execution probably wasn’t there.”It is not entirely a coincidence that the errors increased as the dew set in. “The other thing you have got to factor in is just how wet and how dewy the ball was in the second innings of the game,” Ponting said. “It wasn’t easy for the bowlers to grip. You could see it at the end there. There were a few full tosses that fast bowlers bowled with the ball slipping out of their hand a little bit. That’s part and parcel of IPL cricket. We knew coming here that there will be a little bit of dew in the second half of the game. And we didn’t adapt, and we didn’t execute as well as we could have tonight.”Till around the 13th-over mark in our bowling innings, the second innings of the game, everything was going according to plan. We made a few errors coming in the last four or five overs of the game. When you are a little bit off against any team in the IPL, just bowl a couple of bad balls or just a couple of those here and there, it is quite often the difference in the outcome. We didn’t get things right at the back end tonight.”

Arsenal keen to sign once-£100m rated striker called similar to Osimhen

Arsenal are interested in signing a striker once valued at £100 million, and one who's interestingly been compared to Napoli star Victor Osimhen.

Arteta wants striking partner for Kai Havertz at Arsenal

Since the very beginning of this summer window and even before that, Gunners boss Mikel Arteta has been heavily linked with the signing of a new number nine who can give Arsenal that extra bit of cutting edge.

Talks ongoing: Arsenal believe they'll sign £55m ace soon, he wants to join

The Gunners are still trying to make their third signing of the window.

Last season, Bukayo Saka, Leandro Trossard and Havertz scored an impressive 51 goals between them in all competitions, with Arsenal pushing Man City to the final day in their quest to win a first Premier League title in decades.

However, reports have claimed that Arteta personally wants a striking partner for Havertz, despite the German's impressive displays towards the back end of last season in a makeshift forward role.

Arsenal made a proposal to RB Leipzig striker Benjamin Sesko earlier this summer, but the Slovenia international gem decided to remain at his current club. The 21-year-old had offers from north London, Chelsea and Man United – who all missed out on a deal for Sesko.

Since then, Arsenal have been linked with big-name alternatives. Napoli star Osimhen has remained on Arteta's radar, according to some reports, as the Nigerian pushes to leave Serie A this summer.

Meanwhile, Viktor Gyokeres of Sporting Lisbon has been targeted by Arsenal this summer, coming after the Sweden international's phenomenal haul of 43 goals in 50 appearances across all competitions last term.

More recently, FC Porto striker Evanilson has found himself on Arsenal's target list, but CaughtOffside now claim that a much more familiar name in Brentford striker Ivan Toney is still in Arsenal's thinking.

Arsenal maintain Toney interest as striker search continues

While the 28-year-old has fallen down Edu Gaspar's pecking order in terms of top targets, it is believed Arsenal remain interested in signing Toney this summer alongside Chelsea, as both sides search for a new striker.

Once valued at around £100 million in January, the England striker is now available to sign for around £30 million, as Toney has entered the final 12 months of his contract at the G-tech Community Stadium.

Perhaps if Arsenal enter the final week of the window still without a new centre-forward, this £70 million drop in asking price could be tempting from Arteta and Edu's perspective, especially considering Toney scored 20 league goals the season before last.

Football Transfers have also called the ex-Newcastle starlet a "similar" striker to Osimhen.

Everton in ongoing negotiations to sign "really good" once £62m midfielder

With less than a fortnight until Everton's Premier League season kicks off with the visit of Brighton & Hove Albion, the Toffees are still in the market for a new midfielder to fill the void left by a departing star.

Everton eye potential Onana replacements

The big news out of Goodison Park this summer has been the departure of midfielder Amadou Onana. The Belgium international had been a vital part of Sean Dyche's side last season, however a £50million move saw the 22-year-old join fellow premiership side Aston Villa.

With a hole in their midfield and a significant windfall in their pockets, the Toffees are now on the hunt for Onana's successor on Merseyside. The latest rumours have linked Everton with a move for out of favour Manchester City star Kalvin Phillips. A recent development suggests that the Toffees are now leading the race for the former England international, who is set to be shown the door at the Etihad this summer.

Manchester City midfielder Kalvin Phillips.

Another name on Everton's shortlist is Habib Diarra, who enjoyed a successful season with Ligue 1 side Strasbourg last term. The 20-year-old is valued at around £29million by the French outfit meaning that it would take up a significant chunk of the Onana money to get the deal over the line.

Habib Diarra in action for Strasbourg

With Everton eager to have a new midfielder on the books before the start of the season, it appears that the club are in active talks to bring a former Liverpool man back to Merseyside.

Toffees continue talks for Arthur Melo

As reported by Sport Witness, the Italian press are claiming that Everton are in ongoing discussions over a deal for Juventus midfielder Arthur Melo. The outlet claims that the Toffees are joined by Leicester City in these talks as both sides attempt to ascertain whether the Brazilian would be interested in a move to the Premier League.

Everton have been linked with a move for the 27-year-old for much of the summer, with the Toffees now in active talks to bring the player to Goodison Park. The report by Sport Witness states that Arthur's name is on the list of players not in the plans of new Juventus coach Thiago Motta, meaning that he is likely to be leaving Turin before the window closes.

Much of the Goodison faithful will remember Arthur from his disastrous loan spell at neighbours Liverpool that saw the Brazilian make just one appearance for the club. Despite this, the 27-year-old is still a talented player with even Jürgen Klopp singing the player's praises upon his arrival at Anfield: "What does he bring? He's a really good footballer – I think we all agree on that.

"He gives rhythm, he can give rhythm, he's a really good passer, has speed with the ball, safe on the ball and, how I said, can demand rhythm, which is pretty important, really good in tight areas – all these kind of things. I like it a lot."

With a new midfielder still high on Everton's list of priorities, the Toffees could do a lot worse than signing a player with Arthur's experience this summer, a Brazil international who joined Juventus for an initial £62m who may simply need a fresh start.

Celtic closing in on new signing who could be Rodgers’ next Tielemans

Celtic have not made a signing since the summer transfer window officially opened for business in the middle of last month but that could be about to change in the coming days or weeks.

Brendan Rodgers is no stranger to utilising the loan market to his advantage during his career as a manager and did so to great effect last season with the Hoops.

Paulo Bernardo and Adam Idah were brought in on loan from Benfica and Norwich City respectively and both played a key role on the pitch, which was illustrated when they combined for the winning goal in the SFA Cup final at Hampden Park in May.

The Scottish giants are now reportedly close to landing a deal to bring one of them back to Parkhead on a permanent basis for the 2024/25 campaign and beyond.

Celtic closing in on £6m agreement

According to Football Insider, the Hoops are close to agreeing a transfer to sign Bernardo from Benfica after his promising loan stint in Glasgow last term.

The report claims that talks are advancing between the two clubs and that there is a confidence from Celtic's end that they can get a move over the line before the end of the window.

It also states that Rodgers gave the board the green light to pursue a permanent swoop for the Portugal U21 international and that a fee of £6m is likely to be the figure agreed for the talented midfielder.

This comes shortly after it was reported that the Hoops had entered into talks with Benfica to attempt to sign the midfielder for £4m, which suggests that they have now compromised on that and moved closer to the Liga Portugal side's valuation.

Bernardo could now become Youri Tielemans 2.0 for Rodgers, who managed the Belgian magician during their time together at Leicester City.

Why Paulo Bernardo could be Youri Tielemans 2.0

The Foxes had snapped the Monaco ace up on loan for the second half of the 2018/19 campaign in January 2019, a month before they appointed the Northern Irishman from Parkhead.

Tielemans produced three goals and four assists in 13 Premier League starts during that loan stint before Leicester secured him on a permanent basis in the summer of 2019.

The Belgium international went on to rack up 28 goals and 25 assists in 184 appearances in all competitions for Rodgers, including a winning goal in the 2021 FA Cup final against Chelsea.

Bernardo, who was hailed as a "baller" by U23 scout Antonio Mango, could now be Tielemans 2.0 for the manager as another talented midfielder who can chip in with goals and assists signed on a permanent deal after a promising loan spell.

As you can see in the table above, the Portuguese whiz's form in the Scottish Premiership was not too dissimilar to Tielemans' form in the Premier League during his first stint at the King Power, with six goal contributions in 11 starts compared to seven in 13.

Both players are central midfielders who look to push forward to make an impact at the top end of the pitch as scorers and creators of goals, as shown by their respective statistics.

Therefore, Rodgers could repeat the blinder he played with the Belgian star by signing Bernardo permanently and helping him to become a consistent contributor from midfield over the years to come at Parkhead.

Aston Villa and Monchi ready to bid £13m to sign new 25 y/o on the cheap

Aston Villa are already enjoying a busy summer before the transfer window has even officially opened, and now more midfield reinforcements could be on their way.

Douglas Luiz wants to leave Aston Villa?

After securing Champions League football for the first time in their history courtesy of a fourth-placed Premier League finish, the Villans and NSWE are keen to add quality to their side to ensure that their only movement next season is forwards rather than back.

They have already agreed on arguably their most important deal, tying manager Unai Emery to a new contract which will keep him in charge until 2029, with the Spaniard having led a major turnaround at Villa Park.

Now, their attentions have turned to on-the-pitch matters. To that end, they have begun strengthening their midfield ranks, with Ross Barkley set to arrive in a £5m deal from relegated Luton Town imminently after a deal was agreed with the former Villa loanee.

However, they were rocked by news from Italy claiming that Douglas Luiz has asked to leave the club this summer, despite having two years left to run on his contract with Aston Villa and having just enjoyed his best season to date.

He is reportedly valued at around 60m euros (£51m), and his sale would certainly prove beneficial for financial fair play reasons, which could allow Aston Villa to spend big on the rest of their squad this summer amid links to Conor Gallagher. Now, it appears Monchi is on the hunt for yet another midfielder.

Monchi low-balls for McKennie

That comes in the shape of Juventus man Weston McKennie, who has been touted as a potential option in a swap deal for Luiz in Italy.

However, it appears that Villa could also be keen on doing a straight-up cash transaction for the 25-year-old, whose previous Premier League experience came via a difficult loan spell at Leeds United which ended in their relegation.

The USMNT midfielder is approaching the final year of his £53,000 a week deal in Turin, and is thought to be available for around €25m (£21m) this summer, with Juve not expecting him to renew his contract and a departure seeming 'inevitable' ahead of the new campaign.

That is according to Tuttosport, relayed by Sport Witness, who add that Villa are looking to sign him on the cheap this summer, with Monchi personally driving negotiations. The ex-Sevilla Sporting Director is reportedly 'willing to pay between €12m and €15m (£10m and £13m) for the 25-year-old's signing' on a permanent basis this summer, around half of what Juventus were holding out for.

Despite this, it is added that 'discussions remain open' and that fresh talks are expected in the future, though any deal is likely to be delayed by the Copa America taking place from the middle of June.

Any move for McKennie, on top of a deal for Barkley and a potential move for Gallagher, would likely be contingent on one of Villa's current midfield options moving on, even if it is not in a swap deal. Should Luiz become available, clubs from the Premier League may well be willing to offer Villa a better deal than Juve can put together.
