It has been a busy summer at Molineux for Wolverhampton Wanderers so far. The Midlands club have made some moves in the summer transfer market, whilst also having some major outgoings, as they hope to improve on their impressive 14th-place finish during the 2023/24 campaign.

Firstly, the outgoings, one of which went through just days ago. Portugal international Pedro Neto left Molineux to join Chelsea for a fee of £54m, a deal which was confirmed on Sunday. Gary O’Neil’s side also sold club captain Max Kilman to West Ham United, as he linked back up with former manager Julen Lopetegui, joining for £40m.

So far, the money made from those sales has been spent sporadically. Jorgen Strand Larsen joined on loan, and Tommy Doyle signed permanently for the club after spending the previous season on loan from Manchester City. They have also signed Rodrigo Gomes from Braga, who could be a direct replacement for Neto, and young Brazilian right-back Pedro Lima.

However, O’Neil’s side are not done there when it comes to incomings. The Midlands club could also strengthen up front and have recently been linked with one Premier League player who could bring quality and experience in the striking department.

Wolves target Premier League striker

The player in question here is West Ham and Jamaican international striker Michail Antonio. The 34-year-old centre-forward could leave the London Stadium in the wake of Niclas Fullkrug joining the Hammers after an injury issue and sporadic minutes hampered his season in 2023/24.

According to an exclusive report from GiveMeSport, O’Neil and the Wolves scouting department have ‘been monitoring’ the striker’s situation this summer, with just one season left on his current deal.

However, they might not be the only side thought to be interested in a deal for Antonio during the 2024 summer window. The report from GiveMeSport explains that the Midlands side are one of ‘a host of clubs scoping out whether Antonio is available’ for transfer this summer.

A price for the Jamaica international has not yet been named by West Ham, although it is safe to assume it will be fairly low given his contract expires in less than 12 months time. In fact, he is valued at just £3.3m by Football Transfers, which seems like a fair representation of his price.

Why Antonio would be a good signing

Although he struggled for fitness at times during the 2023/24 campaign, Antonio still featured 26 times in the Premier League, getting on the scoresheet six times and grabbing two assists. That was a record that included a run of four goals in the final ten games of the season.

The 34-year-old, who was described as “unplayable” by former Hammers boss Harry Redknapp, is actually the East London club’s top goalscorer in the Premier League era, netting 67 times in the competition.

Signing the Jamaican would certainly bring experience to the Wolves forward line and add goals to an attack that boasts the likes of Matheus Cunha and Hwang Hee-chan. In fact, there are statistical comparisons to be made between the South Korean forward and Antonio – as noted by FBref.

As per FBref, last season in the Premier League, the 27-year-old had an expected goals tally of 7.7xG, compared to Antonio who averaged 5.8xG. Per 90 minutes, that breaks down to 0.33 for the Wolves forward and 0.31 for the West Ham man, a very similar tally. They also have a similar amount of shots each game, with Antonio averaging 1.59 and Hwang 1.87.

Antonio is also an effective ball carrier, and actually averaged more progressive carries per 90 minutes to that of Hwang last season. Specifically, the 12-time international averaged 2.55, compared to just 1.57 for Hwang. That is a trait that would certainly stand him in good stead in O’Neil’s transitional system.

There are certainly plenty of similarities between the pair, and they could be an effective duo up front, especially given Antonio’s carrying ability and Hwang’s natural poacher’s instinct in the penalty box.

Should Wolves get this deal over the line, it could be an astute capture and a perfect move for O'Neil. The former Bournemouth boss would be adding an experienced top-flight striker with 67 goals in the competition to the squad for a small fee, which could help provide his side with the edge to climb up the table.

It could be a wonderful piece of business for the Molineux outfit.

Queensland opener Joe Burns has shaken off a horror season with the bat to produce one of his finest Sheffield Shield innings, scoring 171 out of a total of 275 to keep the visitors in the game on day two against Tasmania at Bellerive Oval.Burns made 171 from 217 balls with 19 fours and three sixes when only two other Queensland batsmen reached double figures as the Bulls were bowled out 57 runs behind Tasmania’s first innings total of 332. Beau Webster was the unlikely hero with the ball for the Tigers, bagging 4 for 50 with his medium pace.It was Burns’ 19th first-class century and the fifth time he passed 150. The innings broke one of the worst form slumps of his career. In his previous 13 first-class innings this season, including two Tests against India, Burns had made just 125 runs and reached double figures just four times, including an unbeaten 51 against India in the first Test in Adelaide.But he was near flawless on a day when all his team-mates bar Marnus Labuschagne struggled. He produced trademark pull shots and square drives against the quicks and some powerful slog sweeps against Jarrod Freeman’s off-spin. He held the innings together after Queensland suffered a huge collapse midway through the day.Burns and Labuschagne put on 115 for the second wicket following the early loss of Bryce Street and looked on track to set up a first-innings lead. But Labuschagne was given out lbw to Nathan Ellis for 49. The ball struck Labuschagne high and appeared to be sliding down the leg side.The lbw decision triggered a collapse with Webster ripping through the middle order. Having only added seam-up to his bowling repertoire in the off-season after previously bowled just off-spin, he nicked off Usman Khawaja and Matt Renshaw with balls that seamed across the left-handers and then pinned Jack Wildermuth on the toe with a yorker. The Bulls lost 6 for 37 in the middle session and looked in danger of being bowled out for under 200.But Burns found an ally in Xavier Bartlett who contributed a useful 24 and helped Burns reach his century just after tea. The pair shared a 63-run stand before Bartlett holed out to mid off. Burns was then able to add 51 more runs to the total with the help of Matt Kuhnemann and Brendan Doggett as Tasmania put nearly everyone back on the fence. Burns holed out with six overs left in the day leaving Tasmania’s openers with a tricky period to get through. But Jordan Silk and Charlie Wakim negotiated the last four overs without incident.Earlier in the day, Doggett picked up two of the last three wickets in Tasmania’s first innings to bowl the hosts out for 332. Doggett finished with 4 for 88 as Caleb Jewell chopped on for 140 and Jackson Bird holed out at deep midwicket for an entertaining 19.

However, as is the case with any top team, Celtic will need to keep improving and freshening things up if they are to maintain their place as the best team in Scotland. To do this, Brendan Rodgers and co. are seemingly looking to make a few new additions to their squad during the 2024 summer transfer window.

The Hoops are said to be one of a number of teams interested in a possible swoop to sign Bristol City centre-forward Tommy Conway. With Joe Hart having hung up his boots at the close of this past campaign, Celtic are in the market for a new goalkeeper and are preparing a 'formal approach' to sign Newcastle United shot-stopper Martin Dubravka this summer.

Elsewhere, Celtic have been credited with an interest in Salernitana defender Flavius Daniliuc, who spent his formative years at Real Madrid. Manager Brendan Rodgers is also said to be 'desperate' to sign loan star Adam Idah from Norwich City after his impressive stint with the club this year.

Celtic eye cut-price move for player who scored more than Maeda

Now, a fresh name has been linked with a move to Celtic Park. The player in question is Dundee midfielder Luke McCowan. Sky Sports are reporting that the champions are 'keeping tabs' on the 26-year-old as he prepares to enter the final year of his current contract.

McCowan's contract situation means Celtic could land the winger in a cut-price deal, as while he enjoyed a stellar 2023/24 campaign, Dundee will likely have to sell him this summer or risk losing him for nothing this time next year. McCowan was one of Dundee's standout stars as they finished 6th in the league, and losing him will no doubt be a blow for the Dark Blues.

However, his arrival could also be bad news for Celtic's Daizen Maeda. Both players generally operate in the same position for their respective sides, and after McCowan dominated Maeda in the SPFL this past term, Rodgers may opt to bench the 26-year-old in place of his new signing if he is utilised in an attacking-midfield role.

However, the negotiations did not materialise, and the transfer collapsed before any formal agreements could be reached.

Tanguy Ndombele has failed to impress on another temporary spell, this time at Galatasaray in Turkey, so chairman Daniel Levy will be eager to rid the club of his £200,000-per-week wages at the nearest opportunity.

Reguilon apparently doesn't feature in Postecoglou's thinking past 2023/2024, and Tanganga will have just a year remaining on his contract when he returns from his spell at Millwall. Indeed, the aforementioned five could join current Spurs squad members, Giovani Lo Celso and Pierre-Emile Hojbjerg out the door.

Lo Celso has seriously struggled for game time this season, leading to rumours the Argentine could depart for pastures new, with Hojbjerg starting just six Premier League matches despite making an appearance in almost every top-flight match this term.

If the Spurs duo are sold, potentially to fund moves for Postecoglou's transfer targets, a more-than-capable replacement could be Chelsea star Conor Gallagher.

The England international has been a vital cog in Mauricio Pochettino's system, but the Blues could be forced to sell amid FFP worries and with his contract expiring just next year.

Speaking to Tottenham News, pundit John Wenham has claimed Gallagher would be a "phenomenal upgrade" on both Lo Celso and Hojbjerg.

“I like Gallagher a lot, I think that he’s a really good player,” Wenham said.

“He is a character who Postecoglou would definitely like working with, a proper leader who has captained Chelsea on multiple occasions this season. To me, he would be an improvement on the likes of Pierre-Emile Hojbjerg and Giovani Lo Celso, who could both be moved on.

“Gallagher would be a phenomenal upgrade, and someone who I’d very much like to see brought to the club.”

The £50,000-per-week ace would also count towards Tottenham's homegrown quota, with reports suggesting that Postecoglou is a personal admirer of Gallagher as we approach the summer window.
