Absence breeds opportunity: Chances for Aaronson brothers, Alex Freeman, dismay for Sergino Dest, Josh Sargent – winners and losers of the USMNT's Gold Cup roster

The Gold Cup squad is now official, and despite absences, offers insight into how the coaching staff views the player pool

It's now official. We know the 26 players that will represent the U.S. men's national team at this summer's Gold Cup. So much focus will be on the list of players that have dropped out over the past few weeks – Christian Pulisic, Antonee Robinson, Yunus Musah, Folarin Balugun and just Thursday, Sergino Dest – to name a few.

The word seemingly hovering over this squad since the original pre-Gold Cup roster announcement has been "absence." For those that did make the 26, though, the word of the summer is "opportunity."

Just one year out from a World Cup, players are vying for spots on next year's team and, for several, that truly begins at the Gold Cup. The squad is loaded with both new faces and veterans eager to prove themselves to USMNT boss Mauricio Pochettino.

The coach's selections already offer some indication of where the player pool stands. He's made some tough calls with this 26-man squad. Pochettino left some familiar faces at home, aside from those out because of injury or Club World Cup commitments, and he's also opted to include some newcomers with legitimate chances of making the USMNT going forward.

With the squad now complete, GOAL breaks down the winners and losers from Pochettino's Gold Cup roster selection.

    WINNER: The Aaronson brothers

Brenden Aaronson was the first to know that his younger brother, Paxten, would be joining him in the team. He was sitting right next to him when he got the call. That meant that both brothers would get a major chance this summer. It also meant that the two could make history together, too.

Should the two Aaronsons see the field together at the Gold Cup, they would be just the second set of brothers in USMNT history to play alongside one another in an official competition. The others? James and Russell Murphy in 1957.

More importantly, what they can they do as individuals? Brenden heads into this Gold Cup fresh off a Nations League omission, and he'll surely be aware that he's fighting for a place in Pochettino's midfield. So too is his younger brother, who was a late call-up after a standout season at Utrecht. The two aren't just competing against the rest of the player pool – depending on how Pochettino views them positionally, they might just be competing against each other, too.

It's a brotherly battle that's been brewing since they were kids. Now, their family will be able to watch on as they play at the highest levels alongside one another.

LOSER: Sergino Dest and Folarin Balogun

Heading towards the Gold Cup, there were two USMNT regulars that had yet to feature under Pochettino: Dest and Balogun. That was going to be one of the storylines of the summer: how would these two proven USMNT stars look under the still-new coach?

Both were initially included. And then both pulled out late due to injury issues. It's a setback, no doubt, for both the players and the team. Pochettino now misses out on a summer of working with two players that will likely be part of his roster for the 2026 World Cup.

Balogun's exit came first, as the Monaco star injured an ankle. It came after a season full of injuries, with a shoulder issue essentially derailing his club season. After really through with the USMNT last summer at the Copa America, Balogun hasn't been able to build on that momentum – at all. This summer was intended to be that opportunity. Instead, it's more time on the sidelines.

Same for Dest, who only recently returned from a year-long ACL absence. Ultimately, it was determined that his rehabilitation process would be best served without extensive game action this summer, which is logical but obviously disappointing. Dest has an irreplaceable skillset and presence, and the USMNT will look very different without him than they would with him.

Pochettino has had the opportunity to work with virtually every player in the pool – except those two. That next chance won't come until at least the fall, roughly a year after Pochettino's arrival.

  • Getty

    WINNER: Alex Freeman

The right-back position has suddenly opened up, leaving a wide-open path for a player who has the potential to be the breakout star of the summer.

Freeman has certainly broken out in MLS. He's emerged as one of the league's best with Orlando City, combining athletic ability with attacking know-how to really impress. His club contributions earned him a USMNT call-up but, with Dest pulling out of the squad, Freeman suddenly has a legitimate chance to make a real impression.

The only other natural right-back in the team is Nathan Harriel, who was called in as a late injury replacement. That likely means Freeman is the guy at right-back, at least initially. If he starts these games off well, Freeman could certainly play significant minutes before the Gold Cup run is done.

Will it be easy to catch the likes of Dest and Joe Scally on the depth chart? No, but the only way Freeman would have a chance to do that would be to play meaningful minutes. That opportunity is right there in front of him now – can he seize it?

LOSER: Zack Steffen and Patrick Schulte

One of the intentions this summer was to find some separation in the great USMNT goalkeeper competition. Matt Turner would be defending his title against all comers. His lack of club minutes had ignited this competition and, this summer, others would get an opportunity to show why they, not Turner, could be the guy heading into the World Cup next year.

That was until the two chief contenders, Zack Steffen and Patrick Schulte, were forced to pull out. Matt Freese is still on the team, and Chris Brady was called-up after Schulte exited. Those two could theoretically push Turner through the Gold Cup, but there's no doubt that this competition has a different complexion than it did a week or so ago.

Schulte, in particular, will be frustrated to miss out. While both Steffen and Turner have years of USMNT games on their resume, the Columbus Crew shot-stopper could have used this summer to show that he's ready to take that leap. There may be more chances in the fall, sure, but, now, it seems that the Gold Cup will be more about Turner reinforcing his credentials than his competitors trying to prove theirs.

It's Turner's job to lose and, given how good he has generally been with the USMNT despite his club situation, bet on him putting in some strong shifts this summer. If he does that, he'll get closer to solidifying his place as No. 1.

Berrington century and Scotland bowlers deliver knockout blow to UAE

Scotland captain’s first century in 13 months produced a batting recovery that sucked the air out of UAE’s challenge

A captain’s knock from Richie Berrington, followed up by a clinical bowling performance from the Scotland bowlers gave them a 111-run win over United Arab Emirates, thereby knocking the Asian side out of qualification contention on Friday afternoon in Bulawayo.Berrington walked in at 11 for 2 and was put on the back foot when Scotland were reduced to 48 for 4, but he fought through the rebuilding process alongside his middle order before blossoming in the slog overs. His 136-ball 127 was a clinic in pacing an innings through a demanding situation, hitting nine fours and three sixes. His first century in 13 months set UAE a stiff target of 283.UAE could never recover from Berrington’s batting blows. When they came to bat, they were rattled by Chris Sole’s opening spell, further jolting their challenge in a must-win match. Muhammad Waseem, Basil Hameed and the lower order provided brief resistances, but with the team’s highest individual score reading only 36, they were never in touch of the chase, and were bowled out for 171 in 35.3 overs. But UAE did start the game as the better side. After winning the toss, they dominated with the new ball. Junaid Siddique and Ali Naseer led the way in Scotland going four down inside 15 overs, and their spinners strangled the batters for most of the middle overs. But Berrington ensured he didn’t throw his wicket during the difficult period, and alongside Michael Leask (41), Chris Greaves (22) and Mark Watt (44*), kept the scoreboard moving. That ensured Scotland had mitigated the risk of being bowled out, which then gave them the freedom to go hard in the final ten overs. And, Berrington and Watt did just that, dominating from the 40th over. They upped the tempo in the last five, scoring 63 runs in the last 30 deliveries. Their 66-ball partnership of 109 for the eighth wicket took Scotland from hoping for a target of 220 to eventually finishing on 282 for 8. UAE’s bowlers did not strike once in the last ten overs, with only an unselfish attempt at a second run in the innings’ final delivery dismissing Berrington.UAE’s start to the chase was promising for the first four overs, and Waseem threatened to repeat what his opposite number did. The veteran opener lost four partners inside 16 overs, but while he was there, UAE had hope. However, that was dashed when he was the fifth man gone – lbw by Watt – for 36, leaving UAE reeling at 82 for 5.Basil Hameed (30), Aayan Afzal Khan (21) and Karthik Meiyappan (23*) briefly thwarted the Scottish challenge but the regular loss of UAE wickets meant they were entertaining but still quite far away from the 283 target. When Safyaan Sharif returned for his second spell, he cleaned up the resistance with three lower-order wickets, finishing with 4 for 20 on the back of that burst.Scotland now join Sri Lanka and Oman on four points in Group B, realistically needing just one more win in the last two games to be assured of qualification for the Super Sixes. For UAE, their hope of playing in India at the ODI World Cup ended, and now play for pride in their final fixture against Ireland.

James Vince fires warning as Hampshire overcome false start

Hawks’ death bowling was impeccable as Pieter Malan’s 80 goes in vain for Middlesex

ECB Reporters Network26-May-2023James Vince fired a warning to Hampshire Hawks’ Vitality Blast rivals with an outstanding unbeaten 88 off 55 balls as the holders got their 2023 campaign off and running by thrashing Middlesex.Vince, the 2022 competition’s leading run scorer, passed 5,000 T20 runs during his explosive innings, and is now 61 away from being the Blast’s all-time leading run-getter. He put on 91 with Australian Ben McDermott as Hampshire put their opening-day embarrassment to Somerset behind them to win by eight wickets.Pieter Malan was excellent for his 80 but Middlesex slid away to only set the Hawks 172 – which was reached with 13 balls to spare.Friday had been declared Champions Day at the Ageas Bowl as Hampshire and Southern Vipers flaunted their Blast and Charlotte Edwards Cup trophies. Vipers began the day by dominating Western Storm.Hampshire had been routed for their lowest Blast total at Taunton on Wednesday, but instead of licking their wounds, they took it out on Middlesex.McDermott set the tone for the chase with an early scoop before almost wiping out the umpire with a straight drive in a three-boundary destruction of Tom Helm.Vince was no shrinking violet at the other end and forced McDermott to duck out of the way of his own swat down the ground as their 50 stand came up before the end of the powerplay.McDermott picked out wide long off when on 39 but Tom Prest continued the onslaught alongside his captain. Vince was at another level though, his half-century came and went in 28 deliveries, and he then skipped down the pitch to deposit his first six to go alongside his 10 fours.Prest wristily flicked his first soon after in a 17-ball 30 before ending too soon when he was bowled by Luke Hollman. Vince was caught at deep fine leg, but got a reprieve as Middlesex’s poor evening got worse as they had too many fielders outside the ring. The victory came soon after.Middlesex were stuck in and looked on course for 200 thanks to Stevie Eskinazi’s early swinging for 31, Malan’s speedy, anchoring 80 and Ryan Higgins’ 27. But no one else reached double figures and the last six wickets fell for 10 runs in 16 balls and they failed to bat out their overs.Eskinazi flailed a massive six over midwicket in the first over in a productive powerplay – where Joe Cracknell was the only wicket to fall with 53 runs on the board.Mason Crane went for 13 off his first five balls before a googly went through Eskinazi to end a 43-run stand with Malan, before Max Holden holed out the next ball Crane bowled.Higgins reverse swept the hat trick ball away and slog swept two sixes during his innings defining 68 stand with Malan before he was caught and bowled by Chris Wood off his toe.Malan’s innings showcased powerful striking down the ground and pin-point shots through gaps in the field as his 13th T20 fifty came off 30 balls.Hampshire’s death bowling was impeccable though, as James Fuller – whose first two overs had gone for 30 – picked up Malan and John Simpson in his third over.Nathan Ellis had Hollman caught behind off a skier, Nathan Fernandes and Tom Helm were run out and Martin Andersson struck out to deep extra cover to conclude a sorry end to a promising innings.

Chelsea sent Sterling to Arsenal on loan at the very end of last summer's transfer window, but the winger failed to make any impression in north London. Sterling did not manage a single Premier League goal for the Gunners and only made seven starts in the top flight in the 2024-25 campaign.

Sterling will now head back to Chelsea but is facing an uncertain summer. There appears to be little future for him at Stamford Bridge, although he remains contracted to the club until 2027. Another move may therefore be the best option for both parties, but it's not clear if he will stay in England or look to head abroad.

Newcastle monitoring "special" record-breaking wonderkid who idolises Neymar

Newcastle United are monitoring a “special” record-breaking international forward who idolises Neymar, according to a new report.

Newcastle veteran's nightmare season continues

Odysseas Vlachodimos has played just one game for Newcastle United since completing a £20 million move to St. James’ Park from Nottingham Forest last summer – with the Greek behind both Nick Pope and Martin Dubravka in the pecking order on Tyneside.

The 30-year-old, however, had remained a regular for his national team, having started all six of Greece’s Nations League group matches, keeping four clean sheets to help Ivan Jovanovic’s side to win five.

That run between the sticks came to an end at the weekend, though, as Vlachodimos was dropped for Greece’s play-off fixture against Scotland, with Jovanovic instead naming Olympiakos’ Konstantinos Tzolakis in his place.

While no doubt frustrating for Vlachodimos, the decision proved to be the right one as Greece ran out as comprehensive 3-0 winners at Hampden Park to seal their promotion to Nations League Group A and sink Scotland down to Group B.

"Incredible" £15.6m-a-year star open to signing for Newcastle this summer

He could be an exciting addition for Eddie Howe.

Speaking after the game, former Scotland defender Willie Miller was full of praise for the Greeks’ performance.

“Sometimes the opposition are just better than you and the Greeks were better. Sorely disappointing, a great performance from Greece and a poor one from Scotland,” he said, according to BBC Sport. “Greece were just a better side, we had no answer for them. We had no creativity and no threat, we didn’t make it difficult at all for Greece.”

Newcastle monitoring Vlachodimos' teammate

Among those on the scoresheet for Greece in their 3-0 win over Scotland was teenager Konstantinos Karetsas, who recently switched his international allegiance from Belgium to represent the Azure & White. Karetsas scored his side’s second on the night, firing beautifully into the top corner from just inside the Scotland box.

At just 17 years of age, his goal saw him become the youngest player ever to score a competitive goal for the Greek national team.

According to TBR Football chief correspondent Graeme Bailey, Newcastle are among a number of clubs who are currently keeping tabs on Karetsas. Bailey reports that representatives from Newcastle, Manchester United and Liverpool were all in attendance to watch the young attacking midfielder in action against Scotland.

When not playing for Greece, Karetsas plays for Racing Genk in the Belgian Pro League, for whom he’s scored two goals and provided four assists in 30 games this season. The Belgian-born star, who, according to BBC Sport, idolises Brazil legends Neymar and Ronaldinho, was described as “pretty special” by former Scotland winger Pat Nevin after his standout performance across two legs against the Tartan Army.

Greek journalist Stephen Kountourou, meanwhile, has hailed him as one of world football’s future stars: “We had to fight tooth and nail with the Belgian FA to stop him representing them and that was seen as a big coup for Greek football, because Karetsas is rated not just as a potentially decent talented player but as one of the big players for the future in international football.”

Man Utd tell Champions League club they will bid £50m to sign 25 y/o star

Manchester United have told a Champions League club that they are planning to make a big bid to sign one of their stars this summer.

Plans for new 100,000-seater Man Utd stadium revealed

The major breaking news coming out of Old Trafford recently has been the Red Devils’ plans to knock down the historic ground and build a new 100,000 capacity stadium.

Man Utd announced the plans in the week for a new arena that will be built close to the existing Old Trafford and is set to cost around £2bn.

Facts on Man Utd’s new stadium plans

New Stretford End will have a capacity of 23,500

Stadium will be visible from the Peak District

5-10 years to build

Second largest stadium in Europe behind Nou Camp

Will be tallest building in Manchester

Images of the planned new stadium show three masts described as “the trident” and are set to be 200m high and visible from 25 miles away. The club are hoping the stadium can be built in just five years, although it is unclear how it will be financed, with United currently £1bn in debt.

Talking about the plans for the new stadium, chief executive Omar Berrada said: “Our long-term objective as a club is to have the world’s best football team playing in the world’s best stadium. We are grateful for the feasibility work done by the Old Trafford Regeneration Task Force exploring options for the future of Old Trafford.

“We have carefully considered its findings, together with the views of thousands of fans and local residents and concluded that a new stadium is the right way forward for Manchester United and our surrounding community. We will now embark on further consultation to ensure that fans and residents continue to be heard as we move towards final decisions.”

The new stadium may also impact spending on the squad, however, a number of players continue to be linked with a move to Old Trafford in the summer ahead of Ruben Amorim’s first full season in charge.

One of those targets is Atalanta midfielder Ederson, who Man Utd recently made a new approach for after interest in 2024. Now, a fresh update has emerged on the Brazilian and a potential move to England.

Man Utd tell Atalanta they are bidding £50m for Ederson

According to reports from Italy, relayed by Sport Witness, Atalanta, who played in this season’s Champions League, are trying to renew Ederson’s contract, however, the player is alerted by interest elsewhere.

One of those clubs is Man Utd, who have told Atalanta that a ‘€60m offer is coming’ and Ederson is fascinated by the idea of playing in the Premier League.

Juventus are also keen on the Serie A star, but it is Man Utd who are best placed to sign the 25-year-old, with the £50m pending bid potentially set to be enough.

Ederson has been among Atalanta’s best performers this season, with a WhoScored average match rating of 6.98/10. No Atalanta player is fouled more than Ederson per game, and by the looks of things, he could be a potential replacement for Christian Eriksen or Casemiro at Old Trafford.

98th percentile for dribbling: Tottenham now racing to sign £30m PL forward

Tottenham Hotspur are now in the race to sign an “unbelievable” forward from a rival Premier League club, according to a report.

Postecoglou keen to bring in new winger

Ange Postecoglou’s side have seriously underperformed in the Premier League this season, sitting 14th in the table with just nine games left to play, so it is little wonder they are keen to bring in some reinforcements in the summer transfer window.

One position in which Spurs are clearly keen to strengthen is winger, and they have now taken the first step towards signing Feyenoord’s Igor Paixao by making contact to discuss a deal for the Brazilian, who could be an upgrade on Son Heung-min.

Bayern Munich’s Kingsley Coman is another name on the shortlist, and the Frenchman seems like he could be an attainable target, given that the German side are eager to sell him in the upcoming window.

However, another option from much closer to home is now entering the frame, with a report from The Boot Room revealing Tottenham are now interested in signing Chelsea winger Noni Madueke, who is facing an uncertain future at Stamford Bridge.

The Blues are now willing to sanction Madueke’s departure this summer, and a move across the capital could be possible, with Spurs joining the race for his signature, alongside Newcastle United and Aston Villa.

Chelsea's NoniMaduekeduring the warm up before the match

The Lilywhites appreciate the Chelsea ace, who has a 100% win record when he’s featured against Spurs, and the door could be open for a deal this summer, although there may be competition from AC Milan, who are now confident about getting a deal done.

The Italian side have submitted a £33m bid for the England international, who cost the Blues £30m back in 2023.

"Unbelievable" Madueke impressing at Chelsea

It seems a little harsh that Chelsea are willing to sell the 23-year-old this summer, given that he has put in some impressive performances this season, picking up seven goals and three assists in the Premier League.

That follows on from a solid 2023/24 campaign, during which he impressed former manager Mauricio Pochettino.

As a result of his attacking output, the former PSV Eindhoven man has performed very well on a range of attacking statistics over the past year, most notably impressing with his dribbling ability.

Chelsea’s loss could be Tottenham’s gain if they decide to part ways with Madueke this summer, given the level of some of his performances for the Blues, and at 23-years-old he is only likely to improve.

Haider Ali keeps his cool to rescue a tie for Derbyshire at Durham

Durham and Derbyshire Falcons played out a thrilling tie in their Vitality Blast clash at Seat Unique Riverside as Haider Ali hit the final ball of the innings to the fence to earn his team a share of the spoils.Brydon Carse returned from injury to top score for the home side with a career-best 58 as Durham posted 178 from their 20 overs, although they were to rue a batting collapse, losing their final five wickets for only 17 runs.Derbyshire found their range in response as Luis Reece blasted 58 from 47 balls. But the home side dragged it back to set up a tense finale as Wayne Parnell claimed three wickets. Haider Ali held his nerve from the final ball and rescued a tie for the Falcons finding the boundary on the leg side to claim a valuable point. The visitors won the toss and elected to field, but were put on the back foot by Michael Jones’ early attack. The Scotland international, replacing Graham Clark at opener due to illness, crashed five boundaries in the powerplay before he picked out Mattie McKiernan on the fence to hand Khan the breakthrough.Alex Lees found his touch after a slow start but then suffered an unfortunate end when he was run out at the non-strikers’ end by McKiernan deflecting Carse’s drive back into the stumps. Carse responded to the misfortune by blasting two huge sixes straight down the ground to propel Durham’s scoring rate over nine runs per over. The Falcons kept themselves in the contest as Ollie Robinson and Ashton Turner were dismissed cheaply, reducing the hosts to 100 for 4 with eight overs remaining. Carse notched his second T20 fifty clearing the rope with two further strikes down the ground before Khan returned to the attack and prised out the all-rounder for 58.Carse’s dismissal sparked a collapse in the Durham ranks. The hosts fell from 161 for 5 to 178 all out in the final 15 balls of the innings. Zak Chappell did the damage with four late wickets, while Khan added a fourth for himself to bottle up the Durham lower order.Derbyshire issued a rapid response to their chase as Harry Came set the tone against Parnell, smashing his first over for three-straight boundaries. Came made his way to 34 from 17 before Parnell had his revenge to remove the Falcons’ opener in the final over of the powerplay. But, Reece and Wayne Madsen kept the visitors well ahead of the run rate, finding the fence with ease against slack Durham bowling. Reece made a slow start to his knock but he accelerated through the gears to reach his 16th T20 fifty from 38 balls, including two towering sixes against Liam Trevaskis.Paul Coughlin drew a false shot from Madsen and Nathan Sowter added the wicket of Leus du Plooy to his collection this season to put the visitors back under pressure, elevating the required run rate beyond 12 per over. Haider Ali responded with back-to-back boundaries in the 17th over to open up a tense finale, requiring 31 from the final three overs.Parnell and Trevaskis turned the screw for the hosts, combining twice to prise out Reece for 58 and Brook Guest, swinging the momentum back to Durham. Haider Ali and McKiernan drilled De Leede’s penultimate over for 14, aided by two wides from the Netherlands international, leaving the game in the balance heading into the final six balls.Parnell cost a run with his first ball throwing it needlessly back at the stumps after holding McKiernan in check. But his following four balls were on the money to leave Derbyshire needing five from the final delivery. With the game on the line, Haider Ali found the gap in a leg-side boundary to snatch a tie for the Falcons on the road.
