    THE BIGGER PICTURE

Gattuso takes over the Azzurri after Luciano Spalletti's dismissal following a 3-0 loss to Norway in World Cup qualifiers. Italy currently sit in the third spot of Group I, below Norway and Israel. Despite back-to-back World Cup qualification failures, Gattuso expressed optimism and confidence in the talent available, singling out several players he considers among top 10 globally in their positions.

  • WHAT GATTUSO SAID

Gattuso said: "Everyone thinks of Gattuso who runs, grit… I think that the teams I coached played good football. They told me not to say it but I'll say it: today I wouldn't put a Gattuso on the pitch in my team, with the mess he was making, the way I see football now. I like to keep up to date and talk about football, I know what kind of football I like. You have to get into the players' heads, not all are the same. Today the footballer is different, he is much more professional: they just have more difficulty working as a group, not only in the national team"

Italy will return in September to face Estonia in Bergamo before travelling to Hungary to meet Israel. With automatic qualification now unlikely, Gattuso’s side will aim to secure a play-off spot and avoid missing a third consecutive World Cup.

Brevis ready to 'just run straight into' Australia as South Africa debut beckons

As he gears up for his international debut, Dewald Brevis is waiting to ‘just run straight into’ Australia as they arrive in South Africa for a white-ball series that gets underway on August 30.”I must say I am so excited because it’s going to be proper heat and lots of fighting so I can’t wait for that,” Brevis said. “I always like it so I can’t wait to go out there and just run straight into them, give your best.”It’s going to be exciting because they are one of the top cricketing nations so it’s going to be good cricket and hard cricket.”Brevis was handed a maiden call-up to South Africa’s ODI and T20I squads for the limited-overs series against Australia. The series will serve as a precursor to the ODI World Cup in India and it comprises three T20Is and five ODIs.”It’s really been amazing, these last few days because a dream has come true for me,” he said. “From a very young age, I’ve wanted to be part of this amazing set-up of the Proteas. It’s been an honour and it’s been wonderful to live my dream and to spend time with the team. Couldn’t have asked for anything better”.There will, however, be pressure on the 20-year-old, who’s already made a name for himself having featured in the IPL, CPL, SA20 and MLC. Dubbed ‘Baby AB’ for his playing resemblance to AB de Villiers, Brevis knows there will be expectations but he is confident of handling that pressure well.”I know there will always be expectations and I always like that because there is more reason to show who you are then,” he said. “Pressure is always there; I feel the pressure, but I like it. It’s just how you deal with it, just being yourself and enjoying the moment and trying not to think too much of it.”I just want people to get to know me as Dewald Brevis and just see how I go about my things and I want to inspire people and be an example for people.”Dewald Brevis has made a name for himself playing various T20 leagues•BCCI

There is a chance that Brevis might make his debut in Durban, the venue for the three-game T20I series. It is a ground where he has a lot of memories watching South Africa play and also has pictures with some of the players, including one with Quinton de Kock.”It’s quite special as well because obviously, it’s in South Africa to be able to make your debut if it happens but the biggest thing is like I actually have pictures of when I was a little boy of me watching the game and the Proteas playing at Kingsmead, so it is quite cool to be able to make your debut there if it happens,” he said. “I was at the ground, I have pictures with all of those players. Even with Quinny and everyone so it’s really special.”Brevis also recalled watching the fiery South Africa-Australia encounters of the past and hopes there will be more of the same when the two sides face off come August 30.”I can just remember always like basically South Africa batting and then you get the heat of like Mitchell Johnson and those guys running in trying to kill the batters and how we punch them straight back with whatever we do. You can always see the rivalry is there and it’s going to heed those situations and moments of the game. Whosoever is stronger and willing to fight more is going to end up on top.”Brevis has shared a dressing room with a few of the Australian players like Cameron Green, Jason Behrendorff and Tim David while playing for Mumbai Indians in the IPL.”I know a few of them Cam Green, Jason Behrendorff, Tim David…it’s really like if you play leagues you mix with all of the different nations cricketing wise and you learn to form a team with them also and spend time with them. But it’s where I am now, it’s your people, it’s your call basically.”

Vlahovic rejects Fenerbahce approachJuventus risk losing striker for free in 2026Lack of top European offers complicates possible transferFollow GOAL on WhatsApp! 🟢📱WHAT HAPPENED?

According to a report from , Vlahovic has rejected the chance to join Fenerbahce, while Juventus grow increasingly concerned over the lack of serious offers for the Serbian striker. The 25-year-old has shown no intention of renewing his agreement or leaving this summer; he is under contract with the Bianconeri until 2026.

Vlahovic reportedly plans to see out his current contract and leave on a free transfer next year, complicating Juventus' plans to cash in on the forward during the transfer window. The club have looked at a possible replacement; Victor Osimhen is a top option, but a sale of Vlahovic is absolutely essential to pay for that move.

Juventus paid around €80 million (£68m/$86m) for Vlahovic in January 2022 but are now facing the risk of losing him for nothing in 2026. The club wants to extend his contract but only under reduced terms, cutting his salary from €12m (£10m/$13m) to €8m (£7m/$9m) per season. Vlahovic and his advisers have refused to discuss anything so far.

With offers from top-tier European clubs lacking and Vlahovic uninterested in a move to Turkey, Juventus are in a tough position as they attempt to restructure their squad.

Chameera could miss entire Asia Cup, Hasaranga unlikely for initial games

In a further setback for Sri Lanka, Kusal Perera and Avishka Fernando have tested positive for Covid-19

Andrew Fidel Fernando25-Aug-2023Sri Lanka will almost certainly be without Dushmantha Chameera for the entirety of the Asia Cup, and appear unlikely to have Wanindu Hasaranga in their XI for the group stage either.Meanwhile, Kusal Perera and Avishka Fernando – who were likely to make the Asia Cup squad – have tested positive for Covid-19, and are now under observation. Their inclusion depends on the speed of their recovery.Chameera picked up a shoulder injury during the course of the recent Lanka Premier League (LPL), just as he was coming back after an ankle surgery. He last played an ODI on June 7, when he took 4 for 63 against Afghanistan, but did not feature in any official matches in the ODI World Cup qualifier, having injured himself during the warm-ups for that tournament.Related

Sri Lanka team manager Mahinda Halangoda told ESPNcricinfo that Chameera is likely to be ruled out of the Asia Cup, though the board is waiting on further reports to confirm this.Hasaranga missed the LPL final with a thigh strain. According to his management, Hasaranga seems unlikely to be fit for Sri Lanka’s matches against Bangladesh and Afghanistan (in the group stage of the Asia Cup). And if Sri Lanka make it out of the group stage, Hasaranga’s availability will depend on whether he can play without risk of further injury.Sri Lanka are intent on having Hasaranga available for the World Cup and, as such, will be conservative with his reintroduction to top-flight cricket. This is also the case with Chameera – Sri Lanka’s first-choice pace spearhead when fit.It was only after developing symptoms, Halangoda said, that Perera and Fernando were directed to take Covid-19 tests. They are believed to have picked up the virus during the late stages of the LPL, and will have to return negative test results before they can become available.Fernando has not played an ODI since January, mostly due to injury. Perera has not played an ODI since 2021, due to both injury and modest form. The injury to Hasaranga is an especially harsh blow to Sri Lanka’s Asia Cup chances. He was in excellent form in the LPL, topping both wicket-taking and run-making charts. While Sri Lanka have managed their attack without Chameera – who has often been replaced by Dilshan Madushanka, Kasun Rajitha and Asitha Fernando – they do not have a tested replacement for Hasaranga.

Best signing since Pereira: West Brom have struck gold on "special" star

West Bromwich Albion are in danger of falling out of the playoff positions in the Championship now after their first defeat in seven in the difficult division popped up away at Norwich City.

Goal difference is the Baggies’ best friend currently in sixth spot, with the likes of Middlesbrough and Bristol City breathing down the necks of Tony Mowbray’s men to try and leap into the second tier’s nervy lottery at the expense of the West Midlands outfit.

Mowbray will just pray that his key West Brom personnel can step up to the mark when needed between now and the close of the regular season, with Baggies managers of the past such as Slaven Bilic relying on the magic of Brazilian superstar Matheus Pereira to seal promotion.

Pereira's promotion heroics at West Brom

The second-tier high-flyers hit instant gold when snapping up Pereira on an initial loan deal back in 2019 as the South American ace made the Championship his very own playground.

Indeed, the one-time senior Brazil international would light up the notoriously strenuous league with top-drawer display after top-drawer display, leading to a mammoth 28 goal contributions coming his way across 43 total contests in that debut year.

Promotion was won automatically off the back of the now 28-year-old’s sublime heroics, with Pereira then going to solidfy himself as a Premier League-calibre performer with 11 goals and six assists picked up from 33 top-flight clashes.

Mowbray doesn’t quite possess such flashy options at his disposal at the moment – away from the likes of assist king Tom Fellows perhaps – but there is one face in the West Brom camp who could be the side’s best purchase since the golden days of Pereira, even as he remains injured.

Former West Brom attacker Matheus Pereira.

West Brom's best signing since Pereira

Mowbray re-entered the building back in January with a sizable injury issue troubling him, considering he would have been told to help his new outfit win promotion even with a star player sidelined.

The star player is, of course, Josh Maja, who has found himself out of the West Brom first-team set-up for an agonising 14 games now after suffering a nasty lower leg injury that has since required surgery.

This has been a bitter pill for Mowbray and Co to swallow with the ex-Sunderland striker a man possessed in front of goal before this horrible setback, with Maja up to a stunning 12 goals and two assists from 26 Championship contests before January’s heartbreaking development.

Further lauded as a “special” talent by former West Brom boss Carlos Corberan before his departure to Valencia, it did feel as if Maja’s goals alone could have been the kick the Baggies needed to consolidate a playoff spot, knowing that he can cause second tier defences all sorts of bother in the blink of an eye.

Despite missing large portions of the campaign, the injury-prone 26-year-old still finds himself proudly top of the goalscoring charts, with the decision to bring in Maja on a free transfer in the summer of 2023 more than paying off even if he finds himself stuck in the Hawthorns treatment room.

It could be argued, therefore, that he’s been the best bit of business conducted by West Brom since Pereira’s explosive arrival onto the scene, with a hope Maja can be back fit if his side reach the playoffs, having been ruled out now for the rest of the 46-game season.

If he can inspire that same promotion-winning feeling, memories of Pereira’s heroics would certainly come flooding back.

Brave, spirited fans unrewarded as Spirit-Brave washed out

Around 13,000 saw Southern Brave beat London Spirit in the women’s Hundred before the men’s match was abandoned after just 26 deliveries

It was hard to know what was more of a farce. The poor groundsman seeing his neat pile of sawdust obliterated as he tried unsuccessfully to lift the rope being towed round the Lord’s outfield to soak up moisture left by another rain shower over it, or this season trying to pass itself off as “summer”.For the majority of a 13,000-strong crowd who saw Southern Brave Women defeat their London Spirit opposition and then stayed on through an hour-and-a-half stoppage for persistent drizzle and the subsequent mop-up, there didn’t seem anything farcical about a match reduced to 50 balls per side. The fact they were set to see any more play was testament to the superpowers of drainage at Lord’s and its ground staff, allowing the show to go on – momentarily. That was until rain intervened again, this time for good (or bad, if you’re a cricket fan).Dan Worrall had Devon Conway caught-and-bowled for a three-ball duck on the seventh ball of the match but only five more balls were possible before the rain which had hung around all day and delayed the start of the women’s match by an hour returned, at which point Brave were 11 for 1.At the resumption, the powerplay was revised to 13 balls per side, meaning Brave had just two balls left of theirs and James Vince made the most of them with back-to-back fours behind square leg and through the covers off Jordan Thompson. A short time later, Vince thrashed Matt Critchley over wide long-on for six as the Brave batters set about doing what they could to make up for a start in which they thought they’d have double the time.Liam Dawson slowed things up innings and delivery-wise, conceding just three runs off his first set of five, which included the wicket of Finn Allen, holing out to Zak Crawley, who fell theatrically backwards as he pouched a straightforward catch in the deep. No sooner was Dawson out of the action, he was back in it – taking a sliding catch at full stretch to remove Vince. Immediately the rain started to fall again however, the heaviest it had all day, with Brave having scored 34 runs off 26 balls for the loss of three wickets. At that point, the fans started filing out, credit to them for believing for so long. The match was abandoned shortly afterwards.

As England prepare to defend their title at this summer's European Championship, there are plenty of reasons to believe the Lionesses can lift that trophy again on July 27. Sarina Wiegman's side are blessed with depth in a lot of positions and go into the tournament with one of the strongest squads on show, despite the high-profile absences of Mary Earps, Millie Bright and Fran Kirby.

That depth, though, does create some selection headaches for Wiegman, with her simply spoiled for choice in certain areas. The two-time European champion has a reputation as a coach who doesn't like to tinker too much with her best XI, but it wouldn't be a surprise if she does rotate in particular positions given the variety and quality she has to pick from.

In some roles, however, this is not the case. As Wiegman ponders just what her starting line-up will look like when England open their title defence against France on July 5, there are still a few solutions she needs to find, with Sunday's send-off friendly against Jamaica set to provide a testing ground for some of these issues.

What decisions does the Lionesses boss still need to make then? GOAL looks at some of the roles still up for grabs as the Euros near…

Getty ImagesWilliamson's centre-back partner

Six months ago, few would've anticipated the centre-back position next to Leah Williamson being up for huge debate. Bright, in the middle of one of her best individual seasons for Chelsea, seemed nailed on to start alongside the England captain, especially with Alex Greenwood's fitness in doubt after she underwent knee surgery in December. Even if Greenwood was to return to action in time, the Manchester City star has struggled to be a regular in Wiegman's XI in the last two years, so most would've banked on the Lionesses going into Euro 2025 with the same centre-back duo that helped deliver the title three years ago.

However, the picture looks quite different now. Shortly after Greenwood returned to action, Bright ruled herself out of the tournament, citing mental and physical fatigue, meaning the occupant of that left centre-back spot is up in the air. Esme Morgan played there against Portugal in late May, with Greenwood taking the spot a few days later in Spain. Jess Carter, Lotte Wubben-Moy and Maya Le Tissier are all centre-backs in the squad too, though the latter is seen more as a right-back by Wiegman.

Greenwood would be the front-runner at this point, but given she felt like that at this point before Euro 2022 only to be left out, nothing is guaranteed.

AdvertisementGetty ImagesLeft-back

Slightly intertwined with the uncertainty at centre-back is the lack of clarity at left-back. It has been Niamh Charles' position to lose for a while now, but when the Chelsea star was sidelined during the first half of last season with a shoulder injury, Wiegman opted to try something a little bit different. Against the United States, Greenwood and Carter fluidly interchanged at left centre-back and left-back, given the former came through as a full-back and the latter is capable of playing there.

Charles resumed her duties at left-back when she returned earlier this year, until Wiegman played Carter in the role in the win over Portugal at the end of May. The Gotham defender was impressive, approaching the challenge in a more positive and attacking manner than on previous occasions, though Charles was restored to the XI for the trip to Spain a few days later.

It may all hinge on the centre-back decision, too. If Greenwood wins the job next to Williamson, there might be games where Wiegman opts to deploy Carter on the left in order to have that interchangeable aspect. Equally, there might be games where she prefers to have the more auxiliary full-back approach of Charles. Or, perhaps she will settle on one option and stick with it throughout.

Getty Images SportCreative No.10

There is no position in Wiegman's XI more up for grabs than the No.10 role. It's a position Ella Toone has long held down, since emerging as a super-sub there at Euro 2022, but she now has serious competition for it from Grace Clinton, her Manchester United team-mate, and Jess Park, the Man City starlet.

It's Park who has started more often in there in recent games, though amid Toone nursing a knock and Clinton occupying a deeper role while Georgia Stanway was recovering from knee surgery. Now that Stanway is back, while Clinton could still be used as an impact sub in that No.8 role, her best chance of starting regularly at Euro 2025 is certainly as an attacking midfielder.

Lauren James may also be in the mix, if indeed she is fit to play a part after a recent hamstring issue. It was as a No.10 that the Chelsea forward really shone at the 2023 Women's World Cup and although that did come in a 3-5-2 formation, she is still a potential option.

Getty ImagesRight wing

The position on the right of England's front three might not be much of a debate if indeed James is ready to go when Euro 2025 begins. If that turns out to be the case, many will expect the Chelsea star to start most games, if not all, on the right, with Lauren Hemp likely doing the same on the left. However, there are a lot of 'ifs' being used here.

Also in contention to start on both sides are Chloe Kelly and Beth Mead. Both prefer to be used on the right and are arguably at their most effective there, while the uncertainties around James mean there is likely to be more opportunity to stake a place to start on that flank, as opposed to being more of a regular sub to relieve Hemp on the left.

After signing for Arsenal on loan in January, Kelly enjoyed a fantastic second half of the season, so much so that it often reduced Mead to a bench role in the big moments. However, Mead still started often enough and was able to produce her magic, most notably with her match-winning assist in the Champions League final. It's hard to say either is ahead of the other in the pecking order.
