Theekshana likely to return for Sri Lanka against Pakistan

Sri Lanka spinner Maheesh Theekshana is likely to strengthen the XI for their second World Cup game, against Pakistan on Tuesday, according to their assistant coach Naveed Nawaz.”He’s fit and should play tomorrow,” Nawaz said on the eve of the match. “Didn’t want to risk him in the first game against medical advice but he should be ready here.”Theekshana did not play Sri Lanka’s first game against South Africa because he was still recovering from a hamstring strain sustained during the Asia Cup. In his absence, an inexperienced attack was plundered for the highest total in World Cup history – 428 – in Delhi.Sri Lanka, however, haven’t had much time to brood over the beating they suffered against South Africa, hopping on a flight to Hyderabad within 12 hours of that defeat. Nawaz said the team must expect to be put under pressure once again, but hoped they will have better plans against Pakistan.”It’s simple, we expect to face similar pitches,” he said. “They’re not going to change; it’s going to be batting-friendly mostly. We have to look at our execution and see how we could’ve pulled back another 50-60 runs. We have to keep the group positive, that is most important. It’s a long tournament, we’re going to be playing, traveling and doing other things for over a month. We just have to take the learnings from each game and move forward.”Sri Lanka have Mahela Jayawardene on board as a consultant, to tap into his vast experience of having played and coached in India. One of his responsibilities is to speak to the younger players about handling big-tournament pressure, something he’s credited with having accomplished at Mumbai Indians in the IPL. And plenty of young Sri Lankan players have had to step up at short notice at this World Cup.Indeed, 20-year-old Dunith Wellalage wasn’t their first-choice spinner but had the responsibility thrust on him against South Africa because Wanindu Hasaranga was ruled out of the tournament with injury and Theekshana missed the opening game. Wellalage finished with 0 for 81 in ten overs, but three others conceded even more.Kusal Mendis reached fifty off 25 balls against South Africa•AFP/Getty Images

Wellalage had been eased into the set-up on the back of a stellar Asia Cup, where he left his imprint against India. But the Kolta flatbed was extremely different to the dry turner in Pallekele. While Wellalage will likely have the more experienced Theekshana for company against Pakistan, the team believes he is mature beyond his years.”Dunith has had to face a lot of responsibility, where he’s been pushed up as the main bowler in the last couple of games. I think he reacted exceptionally well,” Nawaz said. “He has done well in the Asia Cup. Even on a batting-friendly track in Delhi, he bowled reasonably well. This is a game of learning; he’s moving forward, and we are happy with that.”It wasn’t entirely bleak for Sri Lanka in Delhi. Nawaz praised the batters for giving the chase everything they had. Sri Lanka eventually lost by 102 runs – dismissed for 326 in the 45th over – but they had their moments, especially when Kusal Mendis was laying into Lungi Ngidi on his way to 76 off 42 balls.”When you’re chasing 429, there’s no confusion,” he said. “We needed to go hard, we just wanted two or three guys to go big, that’s the only thing we were looking at. We’re happy as a group about how we went about it. Throughout the tournament, the goal is to maintain the same tempo and play positive cricket and challenge every team we play.”Nawaz also had words of encouragement for Dasun Shanaka, whose captaincy was scrutinised in the lead-up to the tournament. He was eventually confirmed as captain for the World Cup as late as September 26 following a closed-door meeting.Though he was wicketless, Shanaka was Sri Lanka’s most economical bowler against South Africa, conceded 36 in six overs. He then scored 68 off 62 balls in the chase, and was the eighth wicket to fall in the 40th over.”Oh yes, his form has been a worry for us,” Nawaz conceded. “He’s had a couple of injury scares as well, but as a group, we are pleased he has scored runs and his tennis elbow is getting better as well.”

Kashif, D'Oliveira 90s steer Worcestershire to brink of promotion

Fifth-wicket partnership lifts visitors after Yorkshire seamers utilise damp conditions

ECB Reporters Network26-Sep-2023Kashif Ali picked the perfect time to post a career best 93 as he helped steer Worcestershire towards promotion in the LV= Insurance County Championship during a positive first day against Yorkshire at Headingley.Kashif, 25, had only scored 98 runs in four previous appearances dating back to last summer. Here, he led a recovery from 67 for 4, having been inserted, to 280 for 5 from 80 overs with 15 fours in 131 balls. The start of this season-ending fixture was delayed until 12.40pm because of rain, and Yorkshire made use of a new-ball pitch.Seamers Ben Coad and George Hill struck twice apiece for a Yorkshire side aiming to elevate themselves off the bottom of Division Two following their mid-season points deduction. But the Pears recovered strongly through Kashif and captain Brett D’Oliveira, who shared 155 either side of tea. The latter finished on 90 not out off 192 balls.Worcestershire started the day knowing they would be promoted by reaching 300 inside 110 overs. Surely now, they will play Division One cricket next summer for the first time since 2018.Kashif went beyond 50 for the second time this summer and D’Oliveira for the third time in as many matches, the latter also reaching 5000 first-class career runs in the process. While Yorkshire’s aim of avoiding bottom place is an important one, it is only to boost morale. They need to win to have any chance.Coad struck twice early on, with Fin Bean and Adam Lyth – at third and second slip – taking good low catches to remove Gareth Roderick and Pakistan overseas batter Azhar Ali cheaply, leaving the score at 22 for 2.Hill then trapped Jake Libby lbw for 32 and had Jack Haynes caught at third slip by Bean for 14, the visitors in some peril at 67 for 4 in the 20th over.Kashif promises to be vital for Worcestershire in their bid for success in Division One. He has shown more progress in white-ball cricket since joining the Pears as the first product out of the South Asian Cricket Academy last summer. But with Haynes going to Nottinghamshire this winter as one of a host of departures from New Road, a fair bit will rest on his shoulders against the red-ball next year.Batting was difficult against the new ball but became a lot easier as the day progressed. While both Kashif and D’Oliveira were off-side dominant en route to their respective well-paced fifties, Kashif played one dreamy on-drive down the ground off Hill after tea which stood out from the crowd.Just as Kashif will be important for the Pears going forwards, Yorkshire will hope Matt Milnes spearheads their bid for promotion in 2024. Milnes was Yorkshire’s marquee signing ahead of this season, but this is only his second appearance. Just weeks after announcing his arrival last August, the England Lions quick suffered a back stress fracture in his farewell appearance for Kent.He spent the entire winter rehabbing in the Headingley gym and nets and gained selection for the opening match of this summer, the home Championship defeat against Leicestershire.Unfortunately, having encouraged in that fixture with four wickets and a first-innings 75 as a nightwatchman, he reported more pain and was diagnosed with exactly the same injury.Milnes has recovered once more and has played three second-team Championship matches in the last three weeks. Yorkshire opted to reward the 29-year-old for his hard work with a season-ending return to first-team colours.Milnes bowled three spells en-route to figures of nought for 46 from 14 overs and was at his most threatening in his first of six which cost 15 runs. He could quite easily have had a couple of early wickets like Coad and Hill. But Kashif and D’Oliveira advanced Worcestershire’s cause in eye-catching and confident fashion. They reached tea at 130 for 4 and later recorded their fifties off 62 and 78 balls.Kashif fell when he miscued a return catch to Dom Bess – leaving Worcestershire 222 for 5 in the 64th over. D’Oliveira was dropped on 63 by Lyth at slip off Bess, surviving to share 58 unbroken with Ben Allison, 31 not out.Worcestershire are almost there.

He told ESPN Brasil: "When it was half-time, I was p*ssed off because the team was losing, but I ran into the tunnel, caught him, and swapped with him. It's incredible, a guy you play on a video game, you're swapping shirts with him, sharing the field with him. It's an incredible situation. He (Messi) winked at me and my legs started to shake, right at the start of the game. It's so emotional, he's an idol, a reference not only for me, but for the whole world. It's such a joy to have shared the pitch with him."

Estevao also explained how he managed to swap shirts with Luis Suarez as well: "With Suárez too (he changed his shirt). At half-time, when we were getting back into the game, the ball was still in the middle, he came, greeted me, asked to change the shirt. Of course. He asked to change it later. This affection is incredible."

Ollie Price century puts Gloucestershire in command against Derbyshire

Another impressive innings from young batter as Anuj Dal leads fight for visitors

ECB Reporters Network10-Sep-2023

Ollie Price scored his third first-class century to power Gloucestershire•Getty Images

Ollie Price’s third first-class century put Gloucestershire in a strong position on the opening day of the LV= Insurance County Championship match with Derbyshire at the Seat Unique Stadium, Bristol. The 22-year-old followed up Championship hundreds against Yorkshire and Worcestershire this season with a career-best 125 not out, receiving excellent support from captain Graeme van Buuren (78) in a fifth-wicket stand of 157, which helped their side close on 333 for six.Anuj Dal was the most successful Derbyshire bowler with three for 42 from 16 overs. But it was a draining day in the field for the visitors in energy-sapping heat.Gloucestershire, who gave a first-class debut to 22-year-old Exeter-born leg-spinner Ed Middleton, opted to bat first, despite initially sultry, overcast conditions. The decision looked justified when Ben Charlesworth and Chris Dent took the total to 32 from the first seven overs with only the odd alarm.Sam Connors bowled four tight overs from the Ashley Down Road End for just seven runs, but new signing Pat Brown struggled to find the right line and conceded 21 from his opening three overs. The floodlights were already on when just half an hour into the match the umpires considered the light too poor for play to continue. Shortly afterwards rain started to fall and soon the heavy covers were brought on.Thirteen overs were lost either side of an early lunch before play resumed at 1pm. Batting conditions soon improved, with increasingly bright sunshine, and Dent, unbeaten on eight before the break, played more aggressively. The experienced left-hander had moved comfortably to 41, off 72 balls, with six fours, before edging a back-foot defensive shot off Luis Reece, in his first over, through to wicketkeeper Brooke Guest. The breakthrough ended an opening stand of 80 in the 20th over. Left-arm seamer Reece struck again in his second over when Charlesworth, on 30, looked to play into the leg side and got a leading edge which carried to Wayne Madsen at second slip.At 85 for two, Gloucestershire needed to rebuild. Price and James Bracey did so to good effect, adding 43 in 12 overs before Dal pierced Bracey’s apparently immaculate defensive stroke and bowled him for 23.Price had shown his confidence with an early reverse-sweep for four shortly after off-spinner Alex Thomson had been introduced from the Ashley Down Road End. Miles Hammond got off the mark with an edged boundary to third man off Dal and by tea the pair had put together a fourth-wicket stand of 33, taking the total to 161 for three from 42 overs.Brown had figures of none for 36 from six overs at the interval. But the former Worcestershire seamer soon notched his first Derbyshire wicket when Hammond top edged a short-arm pull shot and skyed a catch to Guest, departing for 21.He was the fourth member of Gloucestershire top order to lose his wicket, having made a promising start and at 169 for four the hosts needed stability. Price supplied it and moved to his fifth Championship half-century of the season with a two through the covers off Brown, having faced 71 balls and hit eight fours.Skipper van Buuren was soon busily milking singles while dispatching the occasional bad ball to the boundary, helping to build a half-century stand in 14 overs with Price in what was now glorious early evening sunshine.Price laced his innings with some sumptuous straight drives, while van Buuren reached a 68-ball fifty with his second six, lofted high over wide long-on off Thomson. By then Gloucestershire had bagged a first batting point and were looking to accelerate against a tiring bowling attack. The hundred partnership was brought up by a Price two off Conners, which took him into the eighties. A series of sweeps and cuts off spinners Thomson and Mark Watt saw him reach three figures off 155 balls, with his 13th four, handsomely struck off Thomson.Price then moved past his previous career-best score of 115. Dal ended van Buuren’s enterprising knock by bowling him with less than four overs left in the day and, with the second new ball, had Zafar Gohar caught behind to lift Derbyshire spirits.

The Catalan giants are closing in on a deal for the 22-year-old, who has already agreed personal terms. The club sees him as a key piece in their rebuilding project under Hansi Flick. Speaking to, Torres said: "I haven't spoken to him. We met in Ibiza, but we prefer not to talk about it. All the top players want to come to the big teams, and Barca is one of them. I don't know what will happen, but I hope it's for the best."

Referring to his potential link-up with Williams and Yamal, he added: “We’ve already played together in the national team. I’d like to play with him, and we could form a good trio if everything goes well.”

Ferran also shared that he’s fully recovered from his recent appendicitis surgery and is eager to prove himself again this season: “I see myself at Barcelona and I’m going to stay at Barcelona. I’m optimistic and I’m going to fight to earn a starting spot.”

David Willey to retire from international cricket after World Cup

David Willey has announced that he will retire from international cricket at the age of 33 after England’s final match at the World Cup in India, following the ECB’s decision not to offer him a central contract for the 2023-24 cycle.Willey is among the few England players who have enhanced their reputation over the last four weeks in India, taking five wickets at 27.20 and hitting 42 runs from the lower order in his three appearances since he came into the side for their heavy defeat to South Africa in Mumbai. But he was “not best pleased”, in the words of Rob Key, to be the only member of their World Cup squad who did not feature in the list of 26 central contracts announced in Bangalore last week. Even with a T20 World Cup on the horizon next June, he has decided to quit international cricket for good.”I never wanted this day to come,” Willey wrote in a post on his Instagram page. “From a young boy, I’ve only ever dreamed of playing cricket for England. So, with careful thought and consideration, it is with great regret that I feel the time has come for me to retire from all forms of international cricket at the end of the World Cup.”I have worn the shirt with immense pride and given my absolute everything to the badge on my chest. I’ve been very lucky to be a part of such an incredible white ball team with some of the best players in the world. I’ve made some special memories and great friends along the way and been through some very difficult times.”To my wife, two children, mum and dad, I wouldn’t have been able to follow my dreams without your sacrifice and unwavering support throughout. Thank you for sharing the special memories and picking up the pieces when I’ve fallen apart – I’m eternally grateful.”Related

Willey said that he will continue to give “my everything and more” in England’s final three group games against Australia, Netherlands and Pakistan. “I feel I still have a lot more to give on and off the field while I am still playing my best cricket, and my decision has nothing to do with our performance during the World Cup,” he said. The timing of Willey’s decision is not helpful for England as they look to finish a miserable World Cup campaign on a high following five defeats in their first six games. “There’s no hiding from it,” Mark Wood told the BBC on Wednesday. “We have got to try and stick together as a team and in these last three games, try and get some sort of positive outcome.”Willey will continue to play short-form cricket at home and around the world. He captained Northamptonshire in the T20 Blast last year and represented Welsh Fire in the Hundred, and is due to play for Abu Dhabi Knight Riders in the ILT20 in January. He may also be retained by Royal Challengers Bangalore ahead of next year’s IPL.”Being completely honest, knowing and being able to plan a calendar year with all the cricket that’s going on will be helpful,” Willey told England’s social media channels. “It’s difficult, never knowing whether you’re involved. Spending some time with the family will be top of my list and I look forward to the opportunities that are ahead.”Willey made his England debut in a no-result against Ireland in Malahide in May 2015, shortly after their group-stage elimination World Cup, and became a regular member of their white-ball squads as part of their rebuild under Eoin Morgan, Trevor Bayliss and Andrew Strauss. He has so far claimed 94 wickets in 70 ODIs, and a further 51 in 43 T20Is, the last of which came at Canberra in October 2022.David Willey was part of the England squad that won the 2022 T20 World Cup•Getty Images

He was part of the side that finished second at the 2016 World T20, taking 3 for 20 in England’s last-gasp defeat to West Indies in the final, and was named in their provisional squad for the 2019 World Cup, but was brutally dropped at the last minute to accommodate Jofra Archer’s selection.Willey assumed that marked the end of his international career, but was recalled for an ODI series against Ireland in 2020 and was their second-highest wicket-taker in the format between World Cups. He was also an unused squad member at both the 2021 and 2022 T20 World Cups.He was left out at the start of the ongoing 50-over World Cup, but has impressed since coming into the side, most recently dismissing Virat Kohli, KL Rahul and Suryakumar Yadav while taking 3 for 45 in Sunday’s defeat against India. “I’m sure everybody who knows me does not doubt that, whatever my involvement in the remainder of this campaign, I will give my everything and more,” he said. “That’s the only way I know.”Key said in a statement: “Playing over 100 white-ball games for your country is a massive achievement and something David can be immensely proud of. He has given everything he has to England, every time he’s taken to the field, and I’d like to thank him for all that he’s done over many years. I wish him all the very best for the future.”

Assam, Bengal, Gujarat and Uttar Pradesh, meanwhile, will have to qualify for the final eight via the preliminary quarter-finals.Group A saw a close contest, with Mumbai, Baroda and Hyderabad all winning six of their seven games. But Hyderabad missed out due to inferior net run rate (NRR).In Group B, Kerala also won six games, and Assam finished second with 20 points. Himachal Pradesh also finished with 20 points, but missed out, having lost their game against Assam – the head-to-head record is what matters when two teams are level on points; when more than two teams are on level points, NRR comes into play.Punjab won all but one of their Group C matches and topped the table, with Gujarat behind them with five wins. Opener Prashant Chopra set the platform with his 51-ball 88 and it was Rishi Dhawan who almost led his team to victory with an unbeaten 31-ball 72, but they fell just two runs short in the end.In the end, the win helped Assam not just finish level on points with Himachal Pradesh, but also get the head-to-head advantage they needed to finish second in the group.Parag himself has been in terrific form, hitting six half-centuries in seven games and leading the run charts at the end of the group stage.Ravi Teja shines but Hyderabad miss outRight arm medium pacer Ravi Teja has enjoyed a stellar season, picking 19 wickets in seven matches. Having raced to 14 wickets in the first week, he ran through the Mumbai top order to help Hyderabad defend 156.Hit for 16 runs by a marauding Yashasvi Jaiswal in his first three balls, he hit back by dismissing Jaiswal on the fourth. He then dismissed Ajinka Rahane, Shivam Dube and Shams Mulani as Mumbai were restricted to 132 for 8. It was Mumbai’s only defeat in the group stage.Sai Kishore retires outSai Kishore walked out to bat at the start of the 18th over against Madhya Pradesh, with Tamil Nadu at 132 and looking to finish strong. He couldn’t get going though, making 1 off 3 before he was retired out in the penultimate over.Tamil Nadu finished with 154, which was not enough as Madhya Pradesh recorded a comfortable victory. It turned out to be a disappointing season overall for Tamil Nadu, managing just three wins and finishing fifth in their group.

Alex Malcolm27-Oct-2023A career-best return from Fergus O’Neill and a trademark display of metronomic MCG bowling from Scott Boland helped Victoria take control of a low-scoring Sheffield Shield clash against New South Wales as the Blues’ batting woes continued.Travis Dean’s patient half-century and an unbeaten 40 from Peter Handscomb in the afternoon helped Victoria build a lead of 225 with four wickets in hand at stumps on day two, although NSW fought back well with the ball to avoid the game getting away from them. But the damage was done earlier in the day. Four wickets from O’Neill, three from Boland and three from Mitchell Perry saw NSW bowled out for just 102 in reply to Victoria’s first innings total of 196. O’Neill finished with career-best figures of 4 for 23.Related

It was the ninth time in the Blues’ last 15 consecutive winless Shield matches that they were bowled out for under 200 and the third innings in a row after scoring just 186 and 136 in their loss to South Australia in Adelaide last week.O’Neill and Boland were masterful with the new ball hitting an immaculate line and length on the spicy MCG track. O’Neill rattled the stumps of both openers. Daniel Hughes was bowled in the second over after a length ball climbed and hit his bottom elbow as he tried to defend and Ryan Hackney scored just 2 in 30 deliveries before leaving a ball that pitched on middle and hit the top of off. O’Neill was then on a hat-trick when he scratched Moises Henriques’ outside edge to leave NSW 7 for 3.Perry got in on the act with Jason Sangha and Matthew Gilkes both caught well in the slips before Boland returned to remove the obdurate Blake Macdonald who had replaced the axed Kurtis Patterson. He made 22 off 87 balls but Boland’s suffocating length and line did for him as he chopped on trying to withdraw the bat late.Boland clean bowled Ben Dwarshuis shortly after to give him figures off 11-6-8-2. He should have had Jack Edwards cheaply but he was dropped twice in the slips by the usually reliable Handscomb and Matt Short. The reprieves meant NSW could avoid an unwanted record. At 54 for 8 they were staring their lowest ever Shield score at the MCG in the face with the previous record of 66, set in 1894, still 12 runs away. But Edwards and Jackson Bird swung hard and rode their luck to push NSW beyond three figures. Bird’s 29 included a massive six down the ground off Boland. The Australia Test quick claimed Edwards in the end but his figures took some damage, finishing with 3 for 36 from 15 overs.Victoria turned a 94-run lead into an 184-run buffer for the loss of just Marcus Harris and Will Pucovski in their second innings as Dean ground his way to the first half-century of the match with some disciplined defending and controlled punches into gaps.Chris Tremain continued his good form in removing Harris, who is struggling early in a season where a Test spot is set to open up, and Pucovski having cleaned up Victoria’s first innings in the morning, taking his tally for the match to six.But Dean and Handscomb frustrated NSW until Dwarshuis broke through claiming Dean caught behind. Henriques brought himself on and sparked a mini-collapse. Short was given out to a questionable lbw decision with the ball appearing to hit him outside the line then Will Sutherland was trapped lbw next ball to leave his opposing captain on a hat-trick and Victoria teetering at 92 for 5.Handscomb remained composed and guided the hosts to stumps but there was one more twist late with Sam Harper edging behind in the final over to give the Blues a glimmer of hope. Such was the dominance of the fast bowlers, Australia’s two Test spinners, Nathan Lyon and Todd Murphy, bowled just three overs between them for the day – all of them by Lyon.
