Shakib diagnosed with eye condition but will continue playing cricket

Shakib Al Hasan has been diagnosed with a retinal condition in his left eye. It is understood the condition is unlikely to stop him from playing competitive cricket, as he is set to appear for Rangpur Riders in their BPL match against Khulna Tigers on January 26.A BCB press release said that Shakib had reported issues with his vision, and the allrounder visited an eye specialist in Singapore earlier this week.”Shakib has been complaining of subtle issues with his left eye,” BCB senior physician Dr Debashis Chowdhury said. “After consulting ophthalmologists in Bangladesh and abroad and after multiple eye assessments, it was confirmed that he is suffering from extrafoveal Central Serous Chorioretinopathy (CSR) of the left eye.”It has been decided that a conservative approach will be adopted for managing the issue for now. CSR is a condition that affects the retina, leading to visual disturbances. The medical team overseeing Shakib’s case is optimistic about managing the condition effectively with a conservative approach.”Riders’ opening game of the season, against Fortune Barishal, was Shakib’s first in two months after he suffered a finger injury during the 2023 ODI World Cup. Despite Shakib’s 2 for 16, Riders’ went down by five wickets. After the match, Rideers’ captain Nurul Hasan said: “He [Shakib] has been struggling with eyesight problem for some time now. I think he has been in touch with the doctors regularly. The doctors only could say in what stage the problem is now.”

Renshaw could remain available to Brisbane Heat in Test lead-up

Usman Khawaja’s blow to the head showed the risk of not having a concussion sub, but Andrew McDonald remains comfortable with releasing players

Malcolm: ‘A very one-sided match at Adelaide’

Australia could release Matt Renshaw to play in the BBL Challenger on Monday, and the final on Wednesday if Brisbane Heat qualify, despite the second Test starting at the Gabba on Thursday and Usman Khawaja needing to be monitored following his head knock in the first Test against West Indies.Australia’s selectors took a rare gamble during the Adelaide Test when they released Renshaw from the squad on the second night of the match to fly to the Gold Coast to play in Friday night’s BBL Qualifier against Sydney Sixers.Related

It left Australia without a reserve batter at the venue if they needed a concussion substitute on the third day and they got a glimpse of how much of a risk that was when Khawaja was struck on the head by Shamar Joseph in Australia’s second innings and had to retire hurt. But the state of the game meant a substitute wasn’t required as Australia only needed one run to win.Khawaja passed his first concussion test on Friday and scans cleared him of any damage to his jaw. He will need to pass another concussion test on Saturday to ensure he is not experiencing delayed symptoms and he will be monitored in the lead-up to the second Test in Brisbane. But despite the scare, Australia head coach Andrew McDonald said the selectors are unlikely to add another batter to the squad and they may release Renshaw again to play for the Heat on Monday on the Gold Coast and possibly for the final in Sydney on Wednesday.”I think the information that comes from Uzzy [Khawaja] will then dictate how that sort of unfolds,” McDonald said. “I suppose the positive for the Brisbane Heat is that the final now will be on the east coast somewhere which makes it probably time-friendly to be able to potentially play the final. If it was on the west coast it would be much more difficult.Matt Renshaw was released from Australia duty to play for Brisbane Heat•Cricket Australia via Getty Images”We consider the risk when we release players and I think it’s about 0.5% chance in terms of a concussion happening. So it was ironic that the first time we’ve let a player go back during the Big Bash that there was a head knock. Fortunately enough, the game was in a position where we thought that it wasn’t going to be a higher risk than necessary. So we were happy for Renners to go back and perform for the Heat.”We feel as though we’ve got flexibility when we need to be able to release players and we like seeing players play.”McDonald said it was difficult to judge how the revamped batting order had functioned after just one game on a very challenging pitch where two players in the match passed 50. Steven Smith only got to face 48 balls in his first game as an opener as he finished 11 not out in Australia’s chase of 26.”Sample size of one is always difficult to judge,” McDonald said. “We’re comfortable with where it’s all landed. We feel as though that top six and the way they complement each other gives us the best opportunity to maximize [scores]. We’re very comfortable with Smudge at the top of the order and then seeing Cameron Green back out there in the field, with ball and bat in hand was great to see as well. So we’re optimistic that they will work. And I suppose hindsight will tell us everything.”Australia’s batters were impressed by the quality of Shamar Joseph’s bowling during the Adelaide Test but the coach believes they will be better prepared for him in Brisbane after getting a good look at him.”Sight unseen is always difficult for batters,” McDonald said. “When you haven’t seen someone and got used to their rhythm and the cues that they present sometimes you do get drawn into shots that potentially you don’t play and we saw that with Marnus as well. It was maybe his second bouncer, he probably didn’t have the cues and it rushed him a little and brought about his demise.”So we feel as though now that there’s less unknowns going into the second Test match. We’ve had a good look at them. A lot of those little decision-making errors that may have crept in I think will have ironed themselves out.”

Jaiswal stands tall and alone for India as England edge the day

The India opener made his highest Test score – 179 not out – on a day where no other batter got past 40

Andrew Miller02-Feb-20241:38

Manjrekar: England are very much in the game

You can only judge a pitch after both sides have Bazballed on it, or so the saying might now go, after England’s preposterous exploits in Hyderabad. On Yashasvi Jaiswal’s watch, India appeared in the mood to make amends for their first-Test failings, thanks to a scintillating century that has met this new agenda for his team with poise and attitude aplenty. However, in claiming six wickets on a tough day in the field, England refused to buckle when previous visiting teams might have been braced for a batting landslide, and with Shoaib Bashir settling into his first day of Test cricket with two wickets and a calm command of his attributes, they are no worse off at the close of this first day than they had been at the same juncture of the opening Test. And both sides know full well how that one turned out.Either way, Jaiswal’s sublime 179 not out from 257 balls was the day’s outstanding hand – both the innings that he had promised amid the fluency of his first-innings 80 from 74 in Hyderabad, and the one that India desperately needed to regain their footing in this series. From his very first stroke, an unfettered slap for four off Joe Root’s first ball, via the towering six over long-on with which he brought up his second Test century and his first on home soil, Jaiswal was a class apart – the one Indian batter who found the fearlessness required to pre-empt the sort of challenge that England are sure to offer when their own turn comes to bat.By the final minutes of the day he was struggling with cramp, but Jaiswal still marched past his previous best of 171, made on debut in the Caribbean last year. His new career-best was secured with the fifth six off his innings off the legspin of Rehan Ahmed – another sweet connection down the ground that maintained a control percentage in excess of 90%, and ensured that he’ll resume with ambitions of significantly more on day two.Related

Jimmy vs Jaiswal: a who-is-gonna-do-it thriller

The rest of India’s batting, however, was more of a mixed bag, and as a consequence, England’s rejigged attack was able to take comfort in the struggle on what has so far been a belter of a wicket. With six men dismissed between the scores of 14 and 34, including KS Bharat in the closing moments of the day, India were in danger of similar failings to those that undermined their performance in Hyderabad, when eight of the top nine reached double figures in the first innings but no-one managed to produce the knock-out blow. At least, on that count, Jaiswal cannot be accused of pulling any punches.Nevertheless, it was a gutsy display from England’s remarkably lop-sided attack. Having opted for three specialist spinners and just the lone quick, their line was led, perhaps inevitably, by the one man who’s seen it all before. The veteran James Anderson, back in action at the age of 41, put his Ashes struggles behind him with an ageless display of cut and guile. He picked off Shubman Gill for his 691st wicket, and thereby ensured that he has now struck in every single year since his debut in 2003, but his influence was felt in each and every one of his 17 overs across three distinct spells.James Anderson drew the outside edge off Shubman Gill’s bat to pick up Test wicket no. 691•BCCI

Anderson’s presence – in place of the pure head-hunter Mark Wood, whose energetic efforts had gone wicketless in Hyderabad – offered a degree of control that Ben Stokes had been obliged to do without in the first Test. His infinitesimal command of each-way movement produced an economy-rate of 1.76 that was less than half that of any of his team-mates, and helped to ensure that – unlike in Hyderabad, where all the first-day focus had fallen on Tom Hartley’s struggle for control – this week’s new boy was nothing less than a good-news story.Bashir hadn’t even been born when Anderson made his own Test debut against Zimbabwe in May 2003, but with apologies to Jimmy’s own first scalp, Mark Vermeulen, the identity of Bashir’s maiden Test wicket will perhaps live on rather longer in the collective memory.Irrespective of Jaiswal’s fluency alongside him, Rohit Sharma had dug himself in for the long haul in making 14 boundary-less runs from 41 balls after winning the toss, the consequence of which was that Bashir had not only settled into his rhythm after entering the attack in the 12th over, but had been rewarded with a leg-slip to crank up the pressure. Cue a closed-face clip at a regulation offbreak, and a sharp take from Ollie Pope to pick off India’s captain against the apparent run of play. The same pattern would repeat itself as the day progressed. Gill, under extreme pressure for his place, started his innings watchfully with 17 from his first 36 balls, only for a sudden flurry of boundaries to prove his downfall. Two of these were classy cover-drives as Bashir over-pitched, but the other two were streaky edges off Anderson, who simply adjusted his line on the same probing full length, and induced a nicked drive to Ben Foakes for 34. It was the fifth time in seven innings that Anderson had got his man, at a cost of 7.8 runs per go, and as India went to lunch on 103 for 2, the session’s honours were broadly even.Only one man fell between lunch and tea – Shreyas Iyer, superbly caught by Foakes for 27, as he stayed low with a scuttling delivery from Hartley and clung onto an under-edged cut that could easily have nutmegged him. But Jaiswal by this stage had soared past his century – arms afloat in celebration after a mic-dropping of his bat – and when Rajat Patidar unfurled England’s signature stroke from Hyderabad, the reverse-sweep for four, it seemed India’s debutant had brought with him precisely the sort of youthful verve to complement that of his team-mate.But England would not be denied in their optimistic hunt for wickets. Rehan, held back until the 60th over, took up a central role in the attack for the final session, serving up 16 overs before stumps and picking off two priceless wickets in the process. On 32, Patidar failed to smother a top-spinning legbreak that rolled down the face of his bat and back into his stumps, and with the shadows lengthening, KS Bharat rocked back on a limp cut and gave his own innings away for 17.By then, Bashir had already claimed his second, and in similar circumstances too, as Axar Patel – India’s key allrounder in Ravindra Jadeja’s absence – failed to get on top of his own cut to pick out Rehan at backward point. But thankfully for India, nothing could slow down Jaiswal, whose wagon-wheel revealed shots all round the ground, but whose command in front of square was exceptional. One six off Rehan, a gallop to the pitch from round the wicket and an inside-out drill over extra cover, defied geometry. He had a couple of near-misses on the cut – Root twice got fingertips to tough chances – and a handful of wild hacks against Bashir that nearly cost him, but the bravery to take the game on was precisely what India had lacked at the key moments in the first Test. Whether he’s yet done enough to cover for his off-colour team-mates, however, remains to be seen.

Revealed: Aston Villa pursuit of Nicolas Jackson would 'immediately trigger' Chelsea transfer counter offer for attacking midfielder Morgan Rogers

Aston Villa's reported pursuit of Nicolas Jackson would 'immediately trigger' Chelsea making a counter offer for Morgan Rogers.

Jackson linked with Chelsea exitAston Villa credited with interestAny bid would trigger Morgan offerFollow GOAL on WhatsApp! 🟢📱WHAT HAPPENED?

Chelsea have reportedly been considering selling Jackson for weeks now, with the striker linked with Unai Emery's Villa, having worked with the Spanish tactician at Villarreal. Now, journalist Matt Law claims that if the Villans did make a move for the Senegal international, Chelsea would immediately lodge a counter offer for Villa Park star Rogers – who is likely to cost well over £50 million ($67m).

AdvertisementWHAT MATT LAW SAID

He said on the London is Blue podcast: "I'm not told by anyone at Chelsea but I'm told by people on the outside that if Villa do go for Nicolas Jackson, it will immediately trigger a bid for Morgan Rogers from Chelsea. Obviously, Unai [Emery] has worked with him and kind of promoted Nicolas Jackson in many ways, didn't want to sign another striker. The only way I see Villa going for Jackson is if Ollie Watkins goes, because I just don't, with us [Villa] not in the Champions League next season, see a scenario where we carry Jackson along with Watkins."

THE BIGGER PICTURE

Chelsea have signed forwards Liam Delap and Joao Pedro this summer, leading to speculation that Jackson could be sold after a disappointing end to last season. The 24-year-old worked with Emery at Villarreal in the past but as Law points out, a Champions League-less Villa may not be able to convince him to join them this term. Either way, he may struggle for game time at Stamford Bridge in 2024-25.

Pant on his life-threatening car crash: 'I felt my time in this world was over'

In a chat with Star Sports, Pant talks about the accident, his state of mind, the joy of watching the 2023 Ashes, and whether he will drive a car again

Pant: ‘Don’t know why I was compared to Dhoni’

The first thought that came to Rishabh Pant immediately after his life-threatening car crash on December 30, 2022 was that his “time in this world was over.” Having been “fortunate to have a second life”, Pant, who is expected to play in IPL 2024, said the biggest lesson he has learned from this experience is to always have self-belief.That was the theme of his revealing conversation with Star Sports, titled . Pant talked about the accident, his state of mind, the joy of watching the 2023 Ashes, and whether he will drive a car again.”First time in my life I had that feeling of letting it go. I felt my time in this world was over,” Pant said in the interview, which was conducted in Bengaluru on August 24, 2023, roughly eight months after the accident occurred when Pant was driving from Delhi to Roorkee to meet his family and crashed his car into the median divider on the road. “It was the first time I had such a feeling in life. At the time of the accident, I was aware of the wounds, but I was lucky as it could have been even more serious.”Related

Pant: I've found happiness in even being able to brush my teeth

Pant 'forever grateful and indebted' to individuals who took him to hospital

After undergoing initial treatment at a hospital in Dehradun, Pant was airlifted to Mumbai where he was under the care of the BCCI’s specialist consultant. After undergoing surgeries to reconstruct all three ligaments in his right knee, Pant did his rehab at the National Cricket Academy in Bengaluru.”I am focusing on recovery cut off from the world,” he said. “It helps me in recovering fast, especially when the injury is so serious. For recovery, you have to do the same thing every day. It’s boring, it’s irritating, it’s frustrating, but you have to do it.”Till the time I start playing cricket, I don’t want to plan much for the future. I asked the doctor how long it would take for me to recover. I told him that everybody is speaking different things, but you will give me the most clarity about it. He said it would take 16 to 18 months. I told the doctor that whatever timeline he gave me, I would reduce six months from it.”

Pant said he was alive because of Rajat Kumar and Nishu Kumar, who pulled Pant out of his SUV before it went up in flames. In a social-media post last January, Pant said he was “forever grateful and indebted” to them.Recounting details of those initial moments after the car crash, Pant said his right knee had dislocated – turning 90 degrees to the right as he was lying face down. “There was someone around so I asked if he could help getting the leg back in the position. He helped the knee get back in place.”He was in excruciating pain and later realised how lucky he was to emerge from the accident without losing his leg. “If there was any nerve damage, there was a possibility of amputation. That is when I felt scared.”Jovial and chirpy by nature, Pant didn’t miss out on making a light-hearted comment. “I had taken an SUV, but what I was seeing was a sedan.”‘Will he play cricket again?’Puneet Solanki, Pant’s friend-cum-manager, was one of the first to reach the hospital after the accident along with the player’s mother and sister. Solanki recounted Pant’s first words. “Immediately after the first surgery, one of his eyes was open. He asked me to come closer. He then whispered in my ear: ‘Please take the pads off my legs and hold these gloves’.”0:46

Pant: ‘I was made to feel at home even though I was around my super-seniors’

Pant remembers that moment. He was heavily sedated because of the anaesthesia. “I remember saying ‘take the pads off quickly, my leg has become really heavy’.” There was nothing Pant’s family and friends could do. Solanki’s biggest and most immediate fear was: would Pant ever play again?’A second life’Pant said he was bedridden for about a month. He was itching to stand up and walk around and do normal things. Last February, on social media, he posted a picture of him taking his first steps since the accident. “I wanted to update all the people who had prayed for my recovery and health.”Brushing his teeth, taking baths and doing things that we do robotically in daily life became exciting for Pant as he started regaining fitness and starting to move around, albeit very slowly.”I didn’t think I would ever enjoy brushing my teeth. The first time I took a bath, I didn’t feel like coming out. These small things gave me joy because I’m fortunate to have a second life. Not everyone is fortunate enough to get it.A sight for the sore eyes: Rishabh Pant back in the nets•PTI

“Doctors also said that there was no fracture after the accident. Yes, my knee injury was major, but this could have been so big, that none of us can know. They always tell me I am lucky. Of course, it was such a horrific accident, the individual feels bad that this happened to me. How can I be lucky? But the other side is that despite the crash, I was alive.”‘Rohit says we will play Rishball’Around August last year, Pant started picking up the bat, putting on the keeping gloves, and thinking about cricket. Delhi Capitals, the IPL franchise he is the captain of, posted a picture of him batting as part of the country’s Independence Day celebrations. Pant admits he couldn’t “resist” the temptation to bat. Those in authority, possibly the BCCI medical staff, scolded him. He didn’t mind.Barring the 2023 Ashes, Pant resisted watching cricket. He was spotted in Capitals’ change room last IPL, watching their home matches in Delhi. ” [I didn’t enjoy that much],” Pant said. “I was thinking we could do things this way or that way. I was discussing some things with them [Capitals’ think tank]. But since I was outside, it was different. When you are inside, you control certain things.”Delhi Capitals’ coach Ricky Ponting having a chat with Rishabh Pant on the sidelines of IPL 2023•Delhi Capitals

Pant realised he was getting “stressed”, so he cut down on watching the IPL. But he followed the 2022-23 Ashes, which he said was fun. “Because England have started playing in a certain fashion, something I am used to [playing]. Rohit says we will also play Rishball. He says you play that anyway, but we will get others also to follow you.”‘I will still drive because I love to’Pant, who is 26 now, made his international debut exactly seven years ago, on February 1, 2017. His last match was the second Test of the Bangladesh series in December 2022. Since then, he has missed out on the IPL and the home ODI World Cup, apart from other bilateral series. He does not want to think too far ahead; instead, his focus is solely on the rehab programme. But what about driving cars? “I will still drive because I love to,” he said. “Just because there was a setback doesn’t mean that you do not do those things ever again. Nowadays I am told, ‘, don’t drive [at all].’ But no one was more scared than me. No one was more upset than me.”As a human being, I want to add things to my life. Not by eliminating what I like doing. The accident is a setback. How do you overcome that? By having the belief. That belief keeps growing and at times can border on the obsessive. But if you have belief in yourself, you can achieve anything.”

The Rondo: Who won the new MLS archive drop, do newer franchises deserve retro jerseys, and is the Seattle Sounders' orca badge among the coolest kits ever seen?

GOAL US writers debate the release of MLS third kits, with a fine array of new retro shirts to choose from across the league

Kits are a tough thing to get right. Everyone has an opinion, and it's tricky to find the right target demographic. Do you feed the loyal fans? Do you try to branch out, get random people around the world to wear your colors – even if they've never watched a minute of your team, you know, play football? Or do you just say "forget it" and make something that looks really cool?

With the new MLS Archive collection, MLS have tried to do a bit of all of the above. And in rare fashion, it works. The league have released 10 new retro-ish jerseys, all of which pay homage to the weird and wonderful history of American soccer. Some of them, such as Dallas Burn, D.C. United and Colorado Rapids, pay tribute to the early days of MLS. Some, like Seattle Sounders, Minnesota United and Charlotte FC are a little more recent.

Who nailed it with the kits? Who left a bit to be desired? And just how cool is it to have an orca as your badge?

GOAL US writers debate the fine array of new MLS kits in a fashion-forward edition of… The Rondo.

Major League SoccerWhich new MLS kit is the winner?

Tom Hindle: Seattle Sounders, and it's not remotely close. Guys, they have an orca badge. What more could you possibly want? Shoutout to Colorado, though, for making a green kit that works.

Jacob Schneider: It's gotta be either San Jose or Minnesota. The Loons' ode to the Minnesota Kicks really is beautiful, and there's something fun about the typeface they chose. It looks great, fits as streetwear and represents the history of the state. SJ, meanwhile, is one for the sickos. It has 1990s Clash all over it. It's a stupendous shirt. But its a jersey meant to be worn on the pitch – it's tough to envision it as streetwear.

Alex Labidou: This is easy, the Colorado Rapids brought back their beloved green kits from their inaugural season and gave them some swag for 2025. The old kit was clunky, but the new one is a winner. Plus, they arguably had the best kit trailer as well. No need for debate here.

Ryan Tolmich: It has to be the one with a damn whale on it. Shoutout to the Sounders for going the right amount of crazy, from the design to the orca vibes with the badge. To be fair, all of these kits are hits and all of them are pretty fun. But the Sounders stand out just because they took things just a step further.

AdvertisementMajor League SoccerWhich kit was the most disappointing?

TH: Ryan Tolmich is gonna hate this, but the Charlotte one just does not work. It's a glorified Sweden kit. Snooze.

JS: New England. There's something about it that just doesn't work the way you'd hoped. It's still a gorgeous shirt, but it doesn't sit right. The design is a great effort, but in comparison to the rest of the Archive Collection, it falls short.

AL: Columbus are usually among the leaders when it comes to kit releases, which makes their third kit release this year disappointing. If it this kit seems familiar, it should – a slightly upgraded version of their 2013 away kit. Charlotte would be the second worst – the color scheme seems very Sounders inaugural season. And heritage kits for a team that's four years old seems weird.

RT: It's a very, very classy kit, so no knock on it. But the Rapids kit could have been a little bit more … wild? Search "Colorado Caribous" for some inspiration. But even so, this is one of the more casually wearable kits of the bunch. That's what they were going for, so that's fine. But there were also some bits of chaos that could have been added.

Getty Images SportIs this collection better than last year's vintage release?

TH: Yes, because it actually seems vintage! With Colorado, D.C., New England, Dallas, Columbus and San Jose, they tapped into some MLS heritage. The new(er) ones are good too. Stronger overall than last year, and the collection checks the "vintage" box more. Nicely done, MLS. Not wearing branded Gazelles, though, for what it's worth.

JS: Absolutely – and it actually has teams representing the heritage of the game. Each club was deserving of a shirt, and each kit pays tribute to the fans, players and all involved who laid the groundwork for establishing the professional game. This is really some of the league's best work with adidas.

AL: Slightly better, just because the field is stronger. You've got FC Dallas and San Jose Earthquakes with some really strong kits, and while the Minnesota kit might not be for everyone, there's no denying it's better than a lot of last year's kits. That said, the Timbers, Inter Miami, and KC Wizards kits from 2024 still pull at the heartstrings.

RT: Last year's collection was good, but this release is great. Overall, these kits are strongly tied to history, but they also have a better balance of "wearable" and "Oh my goodness that's chaotic – but in a fun way." This was a good step forward for MLS and adidas, who continue to capture the weird and wild culture of American soccer – which doesn't always have to be as prim and proper as counterparts elsewhere in the world.

AFPWho has the best kits in MLS?

TH: Seattle! LAFC and Portland both have some absolute beauties, and the Red Bulls have really upped it this year – even if they share a lot of similarities with RB Salzburg and RB Leipzig. But the Sounders take the cake, by some distance. Once again: THE ORCA BADGE. This will annoy 50 percent of the GOAL US writing staff, but I cannot stand the Minnesota "starry night" thing. It's naff.

JS: In terms of a three-kit collection, it's the Sounders. It's just beyond delightful. Each jersey is nearly perfect. Their Salish Sea Kit is one of the best designs in the world right now, and their Archive orca kit is a thing of beauty. Then, their Anniversary kit is a real stunner, too, as it shows off their trademark Rave Green exceptionally.

AL: Minnesota starry night kit might have been released last season, but they still rock it this year, and the club's overall collection, including its new release, gives it a slight edge.

RT: It isn't always easy designing around their colors but, the Sounders don't miss. They did things a bit differently with their home and away kits this season, and then dropped the hammer with their orca kit here.
