Milan signed the 23-year-old from Schalke for €8m in 2022. After a challenging start in Italy, he impressed then head coach Stefano Pioli and earned a regular starting role during the 2023-24 season. His form also drew interest from Como coach Cesc Fabregas, but the German defender turned down the opportunity to make the move.

England's in-game tinkering means wait for perfect performance goes on

Need to adapt techniques in full glare of international spotlight makes team a work in progress

England’s pursuit of the perfect ODI performance must wait until their final fixture against Pakistan at least, after their second match was washed out.A heavy storm which forced Sunday’s abandonment at Taunton after just 6.5 overs means Pakistan must wait until the last match of their tour at Chelmsford on Wednesday for another chance to level the series. With Pakistan all but out of the race to qualify directly for next year’s 50-over World Cup, it may be the best they can hope for, along with more match experience. England, meanwhile, can go undefeated if they win there, having swept the T20Is 3-0 and secured what Knight branded a “scrappy” 37-run victory in the first 50-over match.”We just want to put in a good performance,” Knight said. “I think probably we haven’t done that so far … well, I don’t think we’ve done it in our last few ODIs, to be honest. So yeah, you’re striving for that perfect performance aren’t you, and trying to put all facets of the game together. We want to finish this leg of the summer really well.”But Knight also revealed there’s more at stake for England’s players, namely trying out new things in the glare of the international spotlight.Seamer Lauren Bell, who was rested from the Taunton match in favour of Lauren Filer, has been experimenting with changes to her action during games, while Sophia Dunkley, who was recalled to the ODI side for the final two matches against Pakistan, told ESPNcricinfo in December that she had made some technical changes, a process Knight said had continued heading into the winter tour of New Zealand where Dunkley ultimately lost her spot amid a prolonged lean spell.Dunkley was listed on the team sheet at No. 12 in Taunton, having made a century, a fifty and an unbeaten 48 for South East Stars in the 50-over Rachael Heyhoe Flint Trophy.Related

“The amount of work that she did, around not just her technical stuff, but around her mental side of things and having a bit of a pre-ball routine, there’s no doubt that those things would pay off eventually, they just didn’t pay off for her in New Zealand,” Knight said. “It has been really great to see Dunks going away and getting runs, that’s exactly what we wanted her to do.”Lauren Bell is tweaking something technically with her bowling and she’s doing it in games, which is a really hard thing to do and it can affect your output a little bit as well. But the girls are really good at seeing it as long-term progress and in order to be it in the future you have to kind of do it in the here and now.”Knight added that learning on the hop was a growing facet of the women’s game amid an increasingly busy schedule, which culminates this year in the T20 World Cup in Bangladesh followed by the 2025 ODI event in India.”With the amount of cricket we now play, there’s not huge blocks where you can go and really hone your game and improve those things technically, so it’s important that we keep trying to move forward as cricketers, and then sometimes you do have to do it in games,” she said. “That’s really a tricky thing to do and I think it’s really brave thing to do, and it’s a philosophy of us as a group that we want to keep moving forward. To do that sometimes you might have to maybe go backwards little bit, to then make a huge leap forward.”Knight was pleased with what little her bowlers were able to do on Sunday. Kate Cross sent down one maiden and conceded 11 runs from her 3.5 overs while quick Filer had a catch put down by Sophie Ecclestone at slip off Sidra Amin, as well as a further half-chance at point off Sadaf Shamas, and was 0 for 18 from her three overs. Shamas edged another off Filer which just eluded Knight at second slip and Nat Sciver-Brunt also missed a shy at the stumps in a bid to run out Sidra.”As a bowling unit, I think the girls were quite disappointed with the other day, it was a little bit scrappy and not quite up to our best,” Knight said of the first ODI in Derby, where England were unable to take the final wicket to bowl Pakistan out. “We had some really good conversations about trying to put it right today. I thought the control that Kate showed and then Lauren at the other end just making things happen, it felt like there was a lot going on. With a few chances, we felt like we should have had a couple of on the board.”

In-form RCB and Delhi Capitals meet with playoffs hopes on the line

Match details

Royal Challengers Bengaluru (7th, P12, W5, L7) vs Delhi Capitals (5th, P12, W6, L6)
Bengaluru, 7.30pm IST (2pm GMT)

Big picture: Has the surge come too late for RCB and DC?

RCB have won their last four games on the bounce, and Delhi Capitals have won three of their last five. Their key players have clicked in unison more often than not over recent weeks. Unfortunately for both teams, though, all this may have come a little too late in the season. Both teams are still in contention for the playoffs, but neither has its destiny entirely in its own hands – read this for a more in-depth understanding of where they stand. Both teams can still control their ends of the bargain, though, and this is what RCB and DC will look to do going into their first meeting of the season, at the Chinnaswamy Stadium on Sunday night. DC are better-placed than RCB at this stage, with two extra points from the same number of games, but they might just be underdogs going into this contest. RCB are in a serious run of form, and they will be backed by one of the most fervent home crowds in the tournament. And DC, most significantly, will be without their captain and talisman Rishabh Pant.

Team news and Impact Player strategy

Royal Challengers Bengaluru
RCB have used either Glenn Maxwell or Lockie Ferguson as their fourth overseas player in recent games, depending on conditions and opposition. Maxwell’s record against Kuldeep Yadav (79 off 45 balls, four dismissals, strike rate of 175.55) could prompt RCB to play him in this match, given how much better DC’s attack looks when the left-arm wristspinner is able to control proceedings. If RCB play Ferguson instead, expect Mahipal Lomror to play rather than Vijaykumar Vyshak.Possible XII 1 Virat Kohli, 2 Faf du Plessis (capt), 3 Will Jacks, 4 , 5 Glenn Maxwell, 6 Cameron Green, 7 Dinesh Karthik (wk), 8 Swapnil Singh, 9 Karn Sharma, 10 Mohammed Siraj, 11 Vijaykumar Vyshak, 12 .Delhi Capitals
DC coach Ricky Ponting has confirmed Axar Patel will captain the team in Pant’s absence. He also suggested that David Warner – who has missed four successive games with a hand injury – could be fit to return, having trained on both Friday and Saturday. Ponting, meanwhile, hinted at an opposition-specific bowling selection, with the Australian quick Jhye Richardson in line to play as a new-ball specialist to try and break through a strong RCB top order.Which Indian batter comes in for Pant remains to be seen. Prithvi Shaw is an option, but with Ponting indicating that Abishek Porel was likely to continue opening, DC may prefer a middle-order batter, in which case Yash Dhull or Kumar Kushagra could get a game.Possible XII 1 Jake Fraser-McGurk, 2 Abishek Porel (wk), 3 David Warner/Shai Hope, 4 , 5 Tristan Stubbs, 6 Axar Patel, 7 Lalit Yadav/Sumit Kumar, 8 , 9 Kuldeep Yadav, 10 Mukesh Kumar, 11 Jhye Richardson, 12 .Axar Patel will lead DC in Rishabh Pant’s absence•BCCI

In the spotlight

At the 12-game mark in the season, DC have the spin attack with the best collective average of all teams this season (24.88) and the fourth-best economy rate (8.18). Up against them through the middle overs, though, will be Rajat Patidar, who has the second-best strike rate against spin (229.85) of any batter who has scored at least 100 runs against that style of bowling this season. With Virat Kohli also having upped his intent and shot range against spin in recent games, with telling effect, we could be in for a mouthwatering middle-overs battle.RCB have opened the bowling with a spinner in each of their last four games, with either left-arm spinner Swapnil Singh or offspinner Will Jacks bowling the first over depending on their opposition’s opening combination. It will be interesting to see if they try this tactic against DC, who will have a left-right combination if either Warner or Porel opens alongside Jake Fraser-McGurk. And no matter who bowls at him, Fraser-McGurk will look to hit the ball out of the park. He’s struck at 255.20 in the powerplay this season, going at 244.57 against pace in this phase, and a ludicrous 323.07 against spin.

Stats that matter

  • RCB have won four of the last five meetings between these two teams.
  • In 11 T20s, Kohli has only been out once to Axar, but he’s only scored 78 off 71 balls against the left-arm spinner. DC will be happy for the match-up to continue in this manner, but the events of recent matches suggest that Kohli may play Axar differently if he gets the chance, bringing out his rediscovered sweep and slog-sweep at every opportunity.
  • Dinesh Karthik enjoys batting against Khaleel Ahmed, scoring 28 off 14 balls against the left-arm quick while only being dismissed once.
  • Tristan Stubbs (187 runs at a strike rate of 296.82) and Karthik (180 at 233.76) are the most prolific run-scorers in the death overs (17-20) in IPL 2024.

Pitch and conditions

It’s no surprise that the match that produced the record IPL total and the record run aggregate for any T20 game came at the M Chinnaswamy Stadium. It’s a bit of a surprise, though, that there have been no 200-plus totals in any of the other four matches at the venue so far this season. There was early help for the new ball in the most recent match here, where RCB bowled Gujarat Titans out for 147, and it will be interesting to see if conditions on Sunday night bring fast bowlers into the game in a similar way. It has rained on and off in the evenings in the week leading up to the match, and weather interruptions could be likely.

Quotes

“The position I was going [in] to bat was very challenging for me, because this year I’ve got a new role, getting to play in the middle order, so I’ve done some changes […] I spoke with Virat , DK , who have a lot of experience, so I think that helped a lot […] If you’re going at the top of the order, you get some extra cushion to think and plan your innings, but if you’re going around the 10th-11th over, you don’t get that cushion. You have to be really quick in making your decision. It helped me a lot to talk with the great players in our team.”
“Obviously Rishabh Pant is not there, so we’ve got to think about an Indian middle-order player potentially to come in for him. David Warner missed the last game. He got that nasty knock on his hand about a month ago now, hasn’t played a game since. He trained really strongly yesterday. He’s here now. He’ll be up hitting balls in the middle now, so he’ll be doing some more batting today, so hopefully he’s available for selection tomorrow. There’s a chance against RCB as well, with their dominance at the top of the order, that we might think about changing our bowling line-up as well, someone like a Jhye Richardson to bring into the side as a specialist new-ball bowler to potentially take early wickets against RCB.”

‘Things are looking very good’ – Bayern Munich set to tie two players to new contracts as star defender insists he's 'happy' at Bundesliga champions

Bayern Munich are set to tie two players down to new contracts, with extensions for Dayot Upamecano and rising star Lennart Karl close to completion.

  • WHAT HAPPENED?

Bayern are close to securing contract extensions for two key players: centre-back Upamecano and attacking prospect Karl. Negotiations with Upamecano have been ongoing for months, with both the player and Bayern hierarchy keen to finalise an agreement that would see him remain beyond his current deal, which is set to expire in June 2026. Meanwhile, talks with 17-year-old Karl are at an advanced stage with Bayern “very confident” of securing his signature for the long term following his impressive form in youth and first-team pre-season matches.

    WHAT WAS SAID?

Sporting director Max Eberl confirmed following the 4-0 friendly win against Tottenham Hotspur, saying: “It’s definitely a goal that we want to extend,” referencing their intent over Upamecano during a recent mixed zone.

Upamecano himself reiterated after the friendly win: “I’m happy here,” noting ongoing discussions between his agent, Eberl and sporting director Christoph Freund. Eberl further : “It’s looking very good,” highlighting Bayern’s optimism around the 17-year-old’s extension.

  • THE BIGGER PICTURE

Upamecano’s extension would represent another strong statement from Bayern as they continue to lock down their core squad, having already secured Jamal Musiala and Alphonso Davies to long-term deals this year. Under Vincent Kompany, Upamecano was a regular in the starting XI until his season was cut short by injury. Karl, meanwhile, has been prolific in scoring and assisting goals at youth level and made an impact in pre-season matches, notably scoring against Tottenham, after making an appearance at the Club World Cup.

    WHAT'S NEXT?

Bayern expect to finalise Upamecano’s extension within weeks, although exact salary terms remain under negotiation, with agreement anticipated to extend to at least 2029. Karl’s renewal could be announced before the end of the week, potentially running through to 2028. The pair are set to play a role in Bayern’s upcoming domestic and European fixtures as the Bundesliga champions prepare for another title challenge.

Stoinis and bowling pack lift LSG to third spot

Mumbai could only muster 144, a total that wasn’t anywhere close to enough

Alagappan Muthu30-Apr-20241:06

Jaffer: ‘LSG trust Naveen to bowl the tough overs’

Having lost more wickets (4) than they hit boundaries (3) in the powerplay, Mumbai Indians were always going to struggle. Four of the first six overs cost a run a ball or less. Two of the last four suffered the same fate. A total of 144 did not look like it would be enough and so it proved as Lucknow Super Giants secured victory with four wickets to spare and moved into third place on the points table. Really, the only thing that didn’t go according to plan for KL Rahul – well two things – was Mayank Yadav leaving the field early on the very night he returned from injury.Mohsin’s missilesThere is almost no relation between Mohsin Khan’s amble up to the crease and the ball that he sends down. At times, he gets big on the batter. Other times he gets swing that they aren’t expecting. He uses his height to great effect and must have incredible strength in his shoulder. It seems to be where he gets all his pace, which deceived pretty much everybody. He was producing a false shot roughly once every three deliveries.MI fined for slow over rate

MI captain Hardik Pandya was fined INR 24 lac as his team maintained a slow over rate for the second time during IPL 2024. The rest of the members of the playing XI, including the Impact Player, were each fined INR 6 lac or 25% of their respective match fees, whichever is lesser. A third such offence will result in Hardik being banned for one match.

Rohit Sharma spooned a ball that he saw as hittable straight into the hands of short cover. The MI batter threw his head back in utter disappointment. He was still thinking that should have gone for four. But instead he was the one gone for 4, on his birthday. Nehal Wadhera had cleared his front leg looking to go big. Except he was met with a searing yorker, dipping beneath his bat before he was ready for it and crashing into his stumps.Stoinis’ utilityMarcus Stoinis has a hundred in this tournament, batting at No. 3. He also occasionally opens the bowling for LSG. Imagine what India would do to have a player like that in their T20 squad?Someone who can bat up the order and give them two or three overs every game. Stoinis knows his limitations. He knows he doesn’t have a lot of pace, but that actually worked in his favour when was bowling to Suryakumar Yadav. The attempt to flick a boundary to fine leg ended up as a feather through to the keeper. It was brave of LSG, keeping Stoinis on for a second over, long after the swing from the new ball had disappeared, against one of the most dangerous batters in the world. But that was probably the plan – deny SKY the pace he likes – and it worked.Marcus Stoinis scored quickly on a tricky pitch•AFP/Getty ImagesMI fizzleThey lost Rohit and Suryakumar in back-to-back overs. They lost Tilak Varma and Hardik Pandya in back-to-back balls. MI were a sinking ship after just 5.2 overs. They could hit only three boundaries in the powerplay, the fewest this season. It was the perfect situation for Ravi Bishnoi to come in and dictate terms. He bowled four overs on the trot, giving away 28 runs and picking up Ishan Kishan’s wicket with a gorgeous googly, deceiving the left-hander as he went for a slog across the line and having him caught at short third. Wadhera tried his best from the other end, progressing from 9 off 15 to 13 off 20 to finally 46 off 41. Most of his runs came off Mayank (21 off 12, 2x4s, 2x6s)Stoinis’ warningBatting average almost 40, strike rate above 150, four wickets from 12 overs bowled, LSG have a cheat code and his name is Stoinis. This chase really got in gear when he pulled Gerald Coetzee for back-to-back boundaries in the third over. Until then the new ball was doing a fair bit and LSG’s focus was seeing that spell of play out. Rahul had dropped anchor (5 off 13, before finishing with 28 off 22). He was looking to his partner to make the play and he did. Big time.Stoinis came into this game with an average of 19 and strike rate of 128 against spin in IPL 2024. But he found Piyush Chawla and Mohammad Nabi just to his liking, taking them for a combined 29 off just 16 balls with four fours and a six. That ended up as necessary insurance because after the fall of his wicket, LSG needed 27 balls to score the remaining 30 runs, losing two wickets as well.

Borussia Dortmund players lobby for Jadon Sancho homecoming transfer with Man Utd outcast seen as a 'difference maker'

Borussia Dortmund players are reportedly lobbying for Jadon Sancho's homecoming with the Manchester United outcast seen as a "difference maker". However, while the calls within the squad to re-sign the English winger grow louder, the boardroom remains a hotbed of doubt and caution.

According to several Dortmund players have voiced their backing for a Sancho transfer. They believe the 25-year-old still has the flair, dribbling craft, and match-winning ability that once made him one of Europe’s most feared wide men.

However, not everyone at the club is swept away by nostalgia. Concerns over Sancho’s recent form have been raised behind the scenes at Dortmund, with some believing his development has stalled during his troubled spell at Old Trafford. Doubts also linger over whether the winger could maintain the discipline and focus needed to thrive under head coach Niko Kovac.

Even with Sancho reportedly willing to sacrifice a chunk of his wages to engineer the move, his expected salary in Dortmund would still sit at a hefty €8–10 million per year. That is a significant figure for the Bundesliga side, whose spending power is dwarfed by Europe’s biggest hitters.

Woltemade's advisor, Danny Bachmann, was absolutely furious after Stuttgart turned down the latest offer from Bayern. THE BIGGER PICTURE

There seems to be no end in sight in the transfer saga involving Woltemade, Stuttgart and Bayern. After seeing two bids turned down by last season's DFB-Pokal winners — with the second bid worth a reported €50m (£43m/$58m) plus €5m in bonuses — Bayern sporting director Max Eberl confirmed that a deal for the 23-year-old was "off the table." Later on, the Munich outfit were handed a deadline until this Saturday by Stuttgart if they wanted to make another approach for Woltemade. The Bavarians obliged but, as has been the case all summer, Stuttgart's stubbornness has prevented the two German sides from reaching an agreement.

  • WHAT DANNY BACHMANN SAID

Speaking to the , Bachmann said: "The solution demanded by Mr. [Alexander] Wehrle this week within a questionable deadline was delivered today with the total package from the interested party and the player's side totaling more than €60 million plus a share of the resale.

"The supervisory board's response regarding a demand of €75 million, which is outside the market, for a player who came on a free transfer but with a lower mid-range salary classification is not only completely unfounded – especially for a domestic transfer – but is in blatant contradiction to the aforementioned agreements.

"In March 2024 and most recently in mid-June, VfB made a clear commitment to a solution-oriented approach as soon as the next career step is possible. In the fast-paced world of football, such a step would now be possible, becoming the German record champion and a permanent Champions League participant. For an ambitious German international, this is a tremendous opportunity."
