Breakthrough: Man Utd now reach "total agreement" to sign "excellent" star

With time ticking by on deadline day, Manchester United have reportedly reached a “total agreement” to sign one of their top targets just hours before the transfer window slams shut.

Man Utd's deadline day business

The Red Devils have already had a busy day on the outgoings front in hope of making room for some much-needed fresh faces. At the death, it looks as though both Jadon Sancho and Antony are set to get their moves to both Aston Villa and Real Betis, freeing up space on United’s hefty wage bill as a result.

Antony’s move will come as a particular relief after Betis responded to earlier reports that they had completed a move for the winger, saying: “There is no agreement for Antony and we have withdrawn the offer. We can’t afford the fee and the amounts that Manchester United must instead pay the player before the transfer.”

With two unwanted stars heading for the exit door, those at Old Trafford have also got to work on players that could arrive in the other direction. And the focus has been on finding a new goalkeeper.

The main question has been regarding just who will be arriving to replace Andre Onana. There has been little doubts that the Red Devils would be welcoming a new No.1 after one mistake too many from the former Inter Milan man.

Emiliano Martinez in action for Argentina.

It looked as though it would be Emiliano Martinez who arrives at one stage, as Manchester United shifted their focus towards the Argentine. Alas, after a late twist, United have now reportedly reached a total agreement to welcome an alternative option.

Man Utd reach "total agreement" to sign Lammens

As reported by The Athletic’s David Ornstein, Manchester United have now reached a “total agreement” to sign Senne Lammens from Royal Antwerp to end a summer-long saga. Agreeing a deal worth €21m (£18m), Ruben Amorim is set to get his upgrade on Onana after United chased Lammens over Aston Villa’s Martinez.

Only time will tell whether they’ve made the right decision, but the stats certainly make for positive reading. Lammens outperformed Martinez in save percentage, saves and only kept one less clean sheet than the Argentine.

Described as a player with “excellent” variance in his passing by analyst Ben Mattinson, Amorim should finally have a goalkeeper at his disposal capable of building from his backline. And that could make all the difference.

Jurgen Klopp is 'a mirror' for Ole Werner as RB Leipzig boss opens up on ex-Liverpool coach's influence after pushing for Bundesliga side to hire him

RB Leipzig boss Ole Werner has given an insight into his working relationship with Jurgen Klopp after the former coach played a key role in his appointment. Werner says that Klopp acts as an advisor, with the Leipzig coach consulting Red Bull's Head of Global Soccer several times a week to receive guidance on navigating challenging situations.

  • Leipzig's good showing this season

Werner was appointed as RB Leipzig’s coach in the summer with Klopp reportedly pushing for him to get the job. He has guided the team to third place in the Bundesliga and just five points behind leaders Bayern Munich despite starting the season with a 6-0 defeat at the hands of the reigning champions. In the five matches since that loss, Leipzig have scored eight goals and conceded only two, including a 1-1 draw against Borussia Dortmund. Werner credited much of this early-season success to the guidance of former Liverpool coach Klopp.

    Werner's praise for Klopp

In an interview with , Werner revealed how Klopp advises him in difficult situations, saying: “We usually talk on the phone or text via WhatsApp. It's good to be able to talk to someone who knows the job but is a bit further away than, for example, my assistant coaches. I usually mirror situations to him, tell him what I'm planning, and he tells me his opinion or how he handled similar situations.”

  • Schafer's praises Werner's brand of football

Werner’s work has drawn praise from sporting director Marcel Schafer, who complimented him on his brand of pressing football, which is associated with Leipzig’s style of play. The 41-year-old also praised Werner for his management, noting how he has brought a sense of togetherness to the dressing room:
“Ole and his coaching team have done a really great job. It's nice to watch a game and recognise patterns – both in defence and attack. That's absolutely his achievement. We're happy he's here.”

Martin: Took SRH too long to realise their batting approach might not work

“There will definitely be some soul searching because you have to put into the equation what conditions dictate to you,” Aaron says

ESPNcricinfo staff06-May-20253:47

Martin: Improved SRH performance came too late

After restricting Delhi Capitals (DC) to 133 for 7, Sunrisers Hyderabad (SRH) were in the driver’s seat before rain washed out the game in Hyderabad, thus ending their diminishing hopes of making the playoffs. Even if they win their three remaining matches, SRH can get only to 13 points. Four teams already have 14 or more.”That was an improved performance, but sometimes it’s a little bit too late,” Former New Zealand keeper-batter Katey Martin said on ESPNcricinfo Time Out. “I think it probably took them halfway through the tournament to realise that their approach with the bat might not necessarily have to be similar to what worked last year.”SRH’s ultra-aggressive approach with the bat saw them make it to the finals last year. Before the start of this season, there were talks about whether they could become the first team to breach the 300 mark in the IPL. They started emphatically, posting 286 for 6 against Rajasthan Royals in their opening game, but their approach backfired after that.Related

Rain knocks SRH out and hands DC a reprieve

Vettori: 'Conditions in Hyderabad weren't what we expected this year'

“There will definitely be some soul searching because you have to put into the equation what conditions dictate to you,” Varun Aaron said on the show. “You can’t be like, ‘You know, we’re going to play one style.’ Because if conditions don’t support you, you’re going to be found wanting, which they have been this year.”I think the best template is that of GT or MI. They have the players to combat conditions. They have two or three options in any condition given to them, but Sunrises, if the conditions didn’t favour them, they were always found wanting as a batting unit.”After the DC game, SRH head coach Daniel Vettori said the conditions in Hyderabad this year were not what they had expected, which made things difficult for their batters.”This is like the theme of the IPL – isn’t it? – give us the wicket we want,” Martin said. “But I think you have to be able to adjust the conditions. We have said that all year, all IPL and the best teams have done that. It’s been built around the personnel who can control the middle overs.”[Heinrich] Klaasen has struck and struck alright. Ishan [Kishan] and Abhishek [Sharma] had those big hundreds, but bowlers also work out what they need to do against batters like that. And I think the more exposure they’ve been getting, the more they have an idea of how to bowl to them. And I think being conditions-dependent, they [SRH batters] didn’t make those adjustments as well.”

Kohli and Hazlewood break RCB's home duck as RR botch another chase

An unhittable 19th over from Hazlewood yanked a third successive match away from RR’s grasp

Shashank Kishore24-Apr-20252:12

What makes Hazlewood a much-improved T20 bowler?

At some point, you’d think the toss gods would show Royal Challengers Bengaluru (RCB) a little mercy at home. But once again, the coin turned its back on Rajat Patidar. This time, though, the bad luck ended right there as they posted 205 for 5, their highest total at home this season. For all that, another heartbreak loomed, but RCB turned it around sensationally to clinch their first home win – and perhaps their most dramatic win at any venue – of IPL 2025.The losing side were Rajasthan Royals (RR), who came into this contest having let back-to-back games slip out of their control in the final over. Their tension seemed to have defused when Dhruv Jurel, having scratched his way to 18 off 23, found his hitting range, and when he and Shubham Dubey ransacked 22 off Bhuvneshwar Kumar in the 18th over, the equation came down to 18 off 12.Related

Then came Josh Hazlewood. He was ice-cold in the moment, producing a masterful 19th over of unhittably steep bounce – conceding just one run and taking two wickets, of Jurel and Jofra Archer in successive balls. It was left to Yash Dayal, the same man who had held his nerve in a now-legendary last over to deliver their previous home win, against Chennai Super Kings last season. And he delivered as RR lost by 11 runs after having the chase in their grasp for so long. The M Chinnaswamy Stadium erupted. RCB had finally found their voice at home and, with it, a long-overdue win that put them in the top three. For RR, this was a fifth straight loss that left them on the brink.1:28

Rayudu: ‘This is the exact template RCB would love Kohli to play’

Hazlewood’s knockout blowsWith 17 needed off ten, Hazlewood conjured a moment of magic – a pinpoint wide yorker that Dhruv Jurel shaped to scythe but appeared to miss. With little conviction, Patidar opted for a caught-behind review. Technology confirmed what only Jurel might have known – a faint under edge that carried low to Jitesh Sharma. A seemingly innocuous dot turned into a game-changing strike.Jurel, who had weathered a slow start and was just beginning to ignite, walked back, and with him went RR’s best hope. But Hazlewood wasn’t done. He cranked up a hard-length ball next that cramped Archer for room. It was as if Archer had been served a dish of his own, cold. The ball ballooned to cover, where Patidar pouched it gleefully. If Hazlewood’s final over, the 19th, was theatre, his penultimate over was no less telling. Having seen balls angled across the left-handers disappear, he went around the wicket to Shimron Hetmyer and pounded the surface with venom. Hetmyer tried to nudge him away but only managed a feather of an inside edge through to Jitesh. Only six runs came off that over, the 17th, and RCB’s grip got firm.Krunal tightens the screwsLong before the chaos of the death overs, RR were cruising. Yashasvi Jaiswal had lit the Chinnaswamy up with a power-packed 49 off 19, and Nitish Rana was stroking it with finesse. At 110 for 2 in nine overs, the chase seemed to be on autopilot. It’s here that Krunal Pandya was summoned and he delivered a breakthrough first ball when Riyan Parag, looking to muscle a slog sweep, only managed a top edge that settled into Jitesh’s gloves. At the other end, Suyash Sharma was equally impressive. Mixing up quick, skiddy legbreaks with the odd wrong’un, he kept the pressure on. RR managed just one boundary from the tenth to the 13th overs. Under rising pressure, Rana went for a release shot in the 14th, only for Bhuvneshwar to pluck a catch on the second attempt at short fine leg. Krunal now had figures of 3-0-19-2. The strangle was on.Virat Kohli scored his first home fifty of IPL 2025•Getty Images

Kohli, Padikkal fuel RCBHalf-centuries from Virat Kohli and Devdutt Padikkal laid a strong foundation after Phil Salt’s scratchy 26 off 23, while a late dash from Tim David and Jitesh lifted RCB to 205 for 5. Kohli overcame a streaky start to get to a composed fifty in 32 balls. His early duel with a fiery Archer was, in particular, thrilling. Meanwhile, Padikkal made the most of two dropped chances to notch up a second straight half-century.Just as the platform was set for a lift-off, RR struck back, removing Kohli, Padikkal, and Patidar in quick succession. But David and Jitesh picked up 42 runs in just 19 balls to cap the innings with a flourish. In a match that swung wildly from one side to the other, those closing overs turned out to be the difference between a defendable total and yet another heartbreak.

Procter's career-best sets up Zaib as Northamptonshire bank 500

A career-best century for Luke Procter backed up by a blistering hundred from Saif Zaib gave Northamptonshire the upper hand on day three of the Rothesay County Championship Division Two match against Derbyshire at Derby.Procter’s 150 from 272 balls provided the launching pad for Zaib who hit three sixes to race to a second century in consecutive matches, off only 86 balls. With Justin Broad hammering 46 from 27 balls, the visitors declared on 500 for 8 with a lead of 193 but their bowlers also struggled on a pitch which has flattened out.Australian opener Caleb Jewell eased to a fifth 50 in six innings and with Wayne Madsen completing his second half century of the game, Derbyshire moved to 202 for 3 at stumps, a lead of nine.Procter faced 17 balls to get the three runs needed to complete his 9th first-class hundred but from then on, the visitors moved swiftly through the gears. When the second new ball was taken, Rob Keogh drove Luis Reece for four to bring up the 300 and the 100 stand which had come from 164 balls. Keogh reached his 50 by pulling Reece for another boundary but in the same over he went for a big drive and was bowled .Zaib survived a hard chance to second slip on one and he took full advantage as he tore the bowling apart either side of lunch.Procter passed his previous highest score , an unbeaten 144 against Warwickshire at Northampton in 2022, and then pulled Zak Chappell for his 20th four to reach 150 before cutting Blair Tickner into the hands of gully. But Derbyshire were struggling to stem the flow of runs with Zaib taking 14 off a Martin Andersson over as 139 runs came in the first session. The lead at the interval was 68 and although Lewis McManus was caught behind sweeping at Jack Morley, the game quickly ran away from Derbyshire who had to bowl spin at both ends to improve a slow over rate.Zaib and Broad tucked into the post lunch smorgasbord to plunder 85 from 54 balls before the latter was caught at deep midwicket to give Madsen his first championship wicket since April 2022.When Zaib skied Morley to long off, the declaration came giving their bowlers 54 overs to try and put Derbyshire under pressure but the batters continued to dominate.David Lloyd needed a big innings after a run of low scores and started positively, pulling Liam Guthrie for six, but then fell to a stunning catch by Broad who leapt at cover to hold on at the second attempt. But Jewell again looked untroubled and with Harry Came, reduced the arrears to under a hundred before Dom Leech trapped Came on the crease in the 27th over.Jewell responded by pulling Leech for his seventh four to reach 50 and with Madsen, set about deflating Northants’ hopes of victory. The pair added 66 from 84 balls and although Jewell cut Broad into the hands of first slip, Madsen passed 50 for the fourth time this season to put his team in credit by the close.

Manager demanding big wages to join West Ham after holding talks with Sullivan

West Ham United chairman David Sullivan has held talks with a top candidate to replace Graham Potter, with the tactician seemingly making his demands crystal clear.

The managerial candidates to replace Graham Potter at West Ham

Potter has recorded the second-worst win percentage of any West Ham manager in Premier League history, behind only Avram Grant, with pressure mounting on the Englishman as he faces a stay of execution.

David Moyes, who guided West Ham to successive European campaigns and ended their 43-year wait for a major trophy during his time at the London Stadium, could even be the man to put one of the final nails in Potter’s coffin this weekend.

In a real piece of irony, Moyes’ Everton side, who are faring much better than West Ham right now, may have a big say in whether Sullivan, Karren Brady and the Hammers board elect to hand Potter a P45.

It is hard to see Potter remaining in the West Ham hot seat if they suffer a humbling defeat at the Hill Dickinson Stadium, with club insider ExWHUemployee previously reporting that, if he does survive past that point, the ex-Chelsea boss is likely to be sacked after their trip to Arsenal.

West Ham are deep into their contingency plans to replace Potter, and there are a number of very interesting names under consideration.

Sullivan, as ever, is dipping into the free agent market.

Former West Ham midfielder Gary O’Neil is a favourite for the potential job, according to Miguel Delaney, with another ex-Hammer in Slaven Bilic — who was in charge between 2015 and 2017 — also in the frame.

Bilic is even said to be making plans for his West Ham backroom, in the event he is chosen as a short-term option until the end of the season, and Sullivan is believed to be personally in favour of bringing the Croatian back to East London (Pete O’Rourke).

Managers who are already in work haven’t been definitively ruled out, either. West Ham have internally discussed the possibility of appointing Scott Parker, following his rise to the Premier League with Burnley, but one man stands out above all the aforementioned names.

Nuno Espírito Santo's demand after holding West Ham talks with Sullivan

Former Tottenham, Wolves and Nottingham Forest boss, Nuno Espírito Santo, is believed to be the favourite to succeed Potter as things stand.

As per the reliable ExWHUemployee, Nuno has already held talks with Sullivan over a potential move to West Ham if Potter leaves, and the Portuguese’s stock is at an all-time high after making history at Forest last season.

However, according to Sports Boom, West Ham face another roadblock in pursuit of Nuno, following some reports that ‘legal issues’ are delaying his arrival too (Pete O’Rourke).

The outlet reports that Nuno’s big wage demands are a hindrance to West Ham and could prove to be a real obstacle, with Bilic ready to join the Irons as an alternative.

Why West Ham must not give up on Nuno

Nuno guided Forest back to Europe for the first time since 1995, and if it wasn’t for a public fallout with Evangelos Marinakis, he’d still be at the City Ground now.

The appeal for West Ham is obvious. Nuno steered Forest away from the drop zone in his first season, transforming them into a robust, hard-to-break-down outfit with a clear counter-attacking identity.

He also helped to fix Forest’s glaring set-piece weakness, something which has really plagued West Ham this season, having conceded 7 of their 13 Premier League goals so far directly from corners.

Managing to get the best out of his players, Forest ended up being last season’s major surprise package thanks to Nuno’s work, and the 51-year-old’s availability as a free agent makes this potential appointment an arguable no-brainer.

Berta pushing Arsenal limits as journalist details huge new William Saliba offer

Arsenal sporting director Andrea Berta is ready to seriously push the boat out in an attempt to tie down star defender William Saliba, amid threatening interest from Real Madrid.

Arsenal facing William Saliba threat from Real Madrid

Saliba started his first game back from an ankle injury in their 1-1 draw with fellow Premier League title contenders Man City last Sunday, relegating in-form summer signing Cristhian Mosquera back to the bench.

While the Frenchman failed to pick up Erling Haaland’s run on the counter-attack, resulting in City’s superstar striker opening the scoring, Mikel Arteta was happy to welcome his star defender back, and Saliba’s presence was still imperative on the whole.

Saliba and Gabriel’s exceptional partnership, often touted as the best central defensive pairing in Europe, has been vital to the Gunners’ trophy challenges since 2022.

Largely thanks to their presence, Arsenal have conceded fewer league goals than any other side in the top flight in each of the last two seasons, with only Man City’s treble-winners and a resilient Newcastle team managing a lower number of strikes against them by the end of 2022/2023.

Saliba has established himself as one of Europe’s most commanding and assured centre-backs in that time, which has attracted serious admiration from the Bernabeu.

According to El Desmarque recently, Arsenal are only in a position to demand around £70 million from Real for Saliba next summer, as the 24-year-old has just over two years remaining on his current contract.

With Saliba’s deal expiring in 2027, Berta is currently attempting to negotiate an extension, but it is believed that talks to tie down the France international are taking some time amid a reported delay (Football Insider).

That being said, Arsenal are determined to ward off Xabi Alonso whilst ensuring Saliba is with them for many years to come.

Andrea Berta to push Arsenal limits with huge William Saliba offer

As per reporter Dean Jones, speaking to TEAMtalk, Berta is ready to push Arsenal’s limits with a huge contract offer for Saliba.

The potential deal would see Arteta’s pivotal defender become their highest earner on around £300,000-per-week — earning even more than Kai Havertz (£280k), Gabriel Jesus (£265k), Martin Odegaard (£240k), Declan Rice (£240k) and summer signing Viktor Gyokeres (£200k).

Arsenal see Saliba as one of the best defenders in world football, with Jones reporting they want him to commit at all costs.

The former Saint-Étienne star is arguably an irreplaceable force at the heart of Arteta’s backline, even if Mosquera did a pretty good job when Saliba was out.

Why Arsenal must tie down William Saliba

Crucially, Saliba is more than just a defender — he’s a leader.

His partnership with Gabriel has become the strongest in England, and his presence has allowed Arsenal to play the high defensive line that underpins their entire tactical approach. Without him, the system arguably doesn’t work the same way.

Arsenal'sGabrielMagalhaes and WilliamSaliba

Securing his future is about more than money or contract clauses — it’s about signalling to the rest of Europe just how serious Arteta’s side are about becoming the continent’s most elite club.

If Arsenal want to continue challenging Liverpool and Man City whilst competing in the Champions League, they cannot risk losing their defensive lynchpin.

Saliba is the type of player you build dynasties around, and the Gunners have worked too hard to reach this point only to let one of their crown jewels leave for a meagre cost.

Could Liverpool lose Alexander Isak already?! Reds warned Barcelona will eye transfer when Robert Lewandowski leaves

Liverpool have been warned that they could quickly lose Alexander Isak, as Barcelona might consider a transfer for the Swedish striker once veteran No.9 Robert Lewandowski leaves the club. The forward could be set to go when his contract expires next summer, as the Catalan giants are not expected to offer a new contract to the 37-year-old ahead of the expiry of his current deal.

Isak still settling in Liverpool

It has been only just over a month since Isak joined Liverpool from Newcastle United for a British record £125 million ($169.3m) transfer. The Swede did not have a proper pre-season due to his tussle with the Magpies over his desire to leave, which prompted Eddie Howe to remove him from the first-team squad. As a result, it took some time before Isak could regain his full fitness and match sharpness and he is still adjusting to life in Merseyside.

Isak has appeared in six matches across all competitions thus far, including three in the Premier League, out of which he started in two games. He has one league assist and a goal in the Carabao Cup for Arne Slot's side.

AdvertisementGetty Images SportLiverpool warned Barcelona could come after Isak

Even before he could settle in Liverpool properly, Isak is already being linked with a move away from Anfield as ex-Barcelona and Spain star Gaizka Mendieta has claimed that the Catalan giants could chase the forward as they eye him as a replacement for their ageing star Robert Lewandowski. It was reported last week that Barcelona are leaning towards not offering Lewandowski a new contract when his existing deal expires next summer. The decision means the 37-year-old will be able to walk away as a free agent after four years with the club. The veteran forward has scored 105 goals in 156 appearances for Barca, with four already coming this season, including a brace in a late cameo off the bench to seal a stunning 6-0 win over Valencia in September.

Speaking to OLBG, Mendieta said: "There was talk in Spain of Alexander Isak going to Barcelona before he joined Liverpool who are stronger financially. Of course, there will be links between the best strikers and Real Madrid and Barcelona, at the moment Barca still have Robert Lewandowski, but they'll be looking for his replacement next year and Isak will be looked at. He's a great striker, he's been in La Liga already, he knows the competition. His performances last season for Newcastle were amazing. So far he seems to be settling quickly into Liverpool. Great strikers are never short of offers and opportunities in either Premier League or of course in Spain with the bigger clubs."

Haaland and Alvarez possible options to replace Lewandowski

The other names that Barcelona could consider signing as Lewandowski's replacement are Manchester City star Erling Haaland and Atletico Madrid's Julian Alvarez. Haaland has reportedly become an "obsession" for Joan Laporta, with Barcelona's president confident that the Norwegian striker can be prised away from Manchester City, despite the striker being tied to a contract in England through to 2034 and is reported to be earning £400,000 ($533,355)-per-week.

World Cup-winning Argentina international Alvarez, who has enjoyed a purple patch ever since he moved to La Liga in 2024, is also under consideration in Catalonia. It is, however, Haaland that remains the dream addition for ambitious Laporta.

Sweden are at risk of losing out on a place at the 2026 World Cup in North America as they have secured just one point from their first three matches and are at the bottom of their qualifying group. During the weekend, Sweden went down 2-0 against Switzerland as both their star strikers, Isak and Viktor Gyokeres, failed miserably. The Reds star will now aim to register a goal and bring his national team back to winning ways against Kosovo on Monday.

Following the international break, Isak will be back in action for the Reds against rivals Manchester United as the two sides lock horns in a crucial Premier League encounter on October 19.
